In this episode Saul and Jolene interview David Gabriel of Producer of Kublacon Conventions. Kublacon is the SF Bay Area Largest gaming convention that takes place over Memorial Weekend. But this year they are putting on Kublacon Fall Veteran's Weekend. It will be the first year this event is happening. So if you want to ease your way into a Kublacon, this is the way to do it. The following prices have a Tabletop events fees of a couple dollars. A Weekend Pass is 40 bucks for the whole Friday to Monday convention. GMs only have to run a four hour game and they get a GM pass for 16 dollars and those in the Military and Veterans get for basically free plus the service feel for Tabletop Events website. Saul and Jolene have been attending Kublacon since 2001 the first year they put it on and it has only grown and grown from a few hundred attendees to over 3,600 attendees post Covid. Those are some impressive numbers. Saul and Jolene talked to David about his gaming roots and how he became involved in putting on one of the best game cons around. With the amount of work that it takes to put on a show is this caliber and size, why put on another show? If at all interested in attending or helping put on Kublacon Fall follow the following link to get all the information you need to volunteer or attend the show. https://kublacon.com/ Thank you all for Listening Web Art by Jim Foster Episode Art by Michael Shean-Jones

Hey now Cabalists! Today's episode of The Secret Cabal Express Tony gives us the rundown of his first visit to the California game convention KublaCon! And then the fellas get into a discussion about Epic Board games. Enjoy!
Willie: It's that time again soon: KublaCon 2024 is upon us, and in today's episode (after a brief talk and rant about Harmonies, the latest abstract nature tile-laying game that took my attention by storm), we talk about boardgame convention excitement, along with what games I'm looking forward to snagging if I see them available! Alexa: Hooray for KublaCon!!!!! I want to play Harmonies there!!! The Shipwreck Arcana!!! Riverside!!! Rafter Five!!! I WANT TO GET DICE!!!!! >:O Willie: If only you would harness this energy towards your homework...
Willie: In this overdue episode, we catch up on games, have a follow-up story from KublaCon, and discuss the delightfully-quick strategy game Boop, which has been given a terrible nickname as seen in the episode name above. Alexa: While they boop they poop :D Willie: Okay, that honestly could be a very hilarious mini-expansion. :D Alexa: Never unerestimate my genius.
Willie: Can you believe it's been a year since we started Boardgames and Blank, Alexa? But I think this works to our advantage, because it's timed well with KublaCon, our local con that we go to! Yes, we're posting our post-thoughts about the now-2-weeks-ago con, as well as what we played recently as well. What a way to kick off Season 2! Alexa: And because it's the start of the new season, let me tell you a random fact! Toejam is... Willie: NOTHING! It's nothing! Can't we just stick with boardgames? Alexa: If you don't know what it is, I dare you to search it up. Willie: Season 2 is gonna be great...

Willie: Hi! Today's episode is still intro-less, but it's a boardgame convention special episode, where we talk about our local KublaCon that we just attended this past week. And Alexa got her first badge! Also, DICE! Alexa: Hey, he copied me! I was the one who kept saying dice!|:
Its been a couple busy weeks since the recording of this episode. It was recorded the week before Saul and Jolene went to Kublacon a gaming convention in Northern California. It was a very well attended convention post Covid shutdowns. So the getting ready for that convention delayed getting this episode edited and published. Jolene and Saul have mentioned Vampire many times in previous episodes of this podcast. Jolene thought it would be a good subject to discuss on the podcast and deserved it's very own episode. Though Saul never has played Vampire he has played Werewolf twice, which shares the same game world and system as Vampire. Though they have never played Vampire Saul and Jolene realize the impact that Vampire and the rest of the World of Darkness games have had in the world of RPGs. With is gritty "Punk Gothic" themes Vampire hit the RPG world by storm. Not only selling very well but also being very impactful to the Live Action Roleplaying scene. Thank you all for listening and all we ask is that you share our podcast with friends and family. In this episode Saul and Jolene talk to Jayson and Ron Smith the creators of Wizardz Bluff. Saul and Jolene met Jayson and Ron at Kublacon this past year as they were demoing their game Wizardz Bluff which will be going live on Kickstarter on October 15th. We decided to chat with them how they started gaming and how that went from players to game creators. These two brothers have a love of gaming that really shows in how they talk about games in their lives. As usual thank you all for listening and please share our podcast with family and friends. You can check out Jayson and Ron's game before their Kickstarter goes live at https://wizardzbluff.com/
Ryan Omega sits down with Ryan Galiotto, who has been a site manager dealing with many LARP game sites, to talk about LARP logistics. This includes acquiring sites for a LARP game with tips on making it easier, challenges to deal with and some stories of the best and worst sites in our experience. We also talk about Galiotto's involvement in the early days of the vampire network One World by Night, as he was responsible for getting those sites for LARPs in Chicago when the games first began in this network. This is from the Kublacon series of podcasts recorded over Memorial Day Weekend in San Francisco.
In this Bonus Episode we talk to Theresa D. a game board player(Scrabble) and game Ap developer. Saul and Jolene met Theresa at KublaCon game Convention in May and decided to talk more about her entry into board gaming and how it ties to her work at Temple Gate Games. Of course Saul digresses and stray off topics but Jolene as always is there to wrangle him back. We recorded this interview before July 4th but Saul and Jolene went on Holiday right after so this is published a bit later than intended. Check out her companies page here: https://www.templegatesgames.com/ We would like to thank Theresa for taking time from her busy schedule and talking to us. After this interview she was at San Diego Comic Con where she was on panel discussion. Go Theresa Go!! The original Shelfie and all-around rockstar HSG community member, Brent, joins Rich and me to talk all about his first convention experience - KublaCon! I swear he's ruined for all other cons. In this episode, Ryan talks to Tina Braganza about the differences and similarities of Improv vs LARP. Tina is a theatrical performer and does not label herself as a gamer, so she has a unique perspective on this topic. We do this on a Sunday morning over breakfast mimosas which definitely had an effect on the podcast! We also tangent on the discussion of being People of Color in LARP, how that affects the character choices that we make in our roleplay interactions. This is part of the Kublacon series of podcasts recorded over Memorial Day Weekend.Note: This podcast was reloaded due to found technical glitches in the original upload.
What differentiates LARP games at conventions from those held at other sites? Are convention LARPs more immersive and more new player friendly? And what are some tips for those trying your first LARP at a convention?Ryan sits down with an assorted circle of guests with varying degrees of LARP experience: James Medina, Ashley Bargenquast, Anson Thurston and Alex Webber. We recorded this at Kublacon, a gaming convention in San Francisco over Memorial Day weekend. As we were recording in a panel room, you'll hear guest voices who popped in their head to say hello and con murmuring outside the walls. This recording was gone at Kublacon over Memorial Day Weekend and is the first of our Kublacon podcast series, interviewing and discussing various topics from the guests at the convention.
LJ stops by to talk the Final Four of the Invader League, the rules updates, and recap from Kublacon and Prescott RPQ.
Well, we are almost at Episode 52, which makes it a year of our podcasts. We missed a week due to going to Kublacon over Memorial Day weekend. But we did publish two bonus episodes that we recorded at Kublacon on Friday and Saturday of the con. We had a great time and were very busy the whole weekend. So in this episode Saul and Jolene talk about Rules As Written(RAW) over Story. No game is all of one or the other in Roleplaying games. At times a GM will have to make a decision that may or may not follow the rules as written. Sometimes it is done due to a mistake, trying to keep the narrative going, or many other reasons. Saul and Jolene give examples of why people like to have run games RAW. Saul and Jolene discuss the idea of the GM telling the players of his game his expectations of the game that they will be running. This will help alleviate any problems that could arise from players expecting a different game than the one the GM is intending to run. As always thank you all for listening and all we ask of you is that you share our podcast with friends and family in order to get our podcast to as many people as possible. No music due to the podcast computer dying and being stubborn about being brought back to life.
LJ stops by to talk the Final Four of the Invader League, the rules updates, and recap from Kublacon and Prescott RPQ.
First of all I want to apologize for the lateness of this episode. Technical difficulties prevented us from post these right after recording. And even before we left for Kublacon our podcast computer died. What I thought was a bad or corrupted boot file was worse. So it taken a bit longer to get these episodes published. We also recorded longer than our normal 30 minutes and the episodes area about an hour and a half long. So I will be including a bit more detailed show notes. 1-13 minutes Saul and Jolene talk about what games they have been playing. 14 Lifetime pass and Hyatt Regency discussion. 21 Game of Thrones 22 Ron Smith co creator of Wizardz Bluff talks about the game he is demoing at Kubla. Can check out the game at Wizardzbluff.com 24 Back to Game of Thrones rant by Saul 26:40 Steve and the Conan Boardgame Kickstarter and mandatory Kickstarter discussion. 31:00 Flea Markets and Garage Sales finds. 40:00 Empire of the Petal Thrones discussion 48:40 Sean Nittner Comes by and talk about Big Bad Con. How it started and what it has become. Sean also talks about running Agon, Blades in the Dark and Ride or Die. BigBadCon.com 1:00:10 Theresa of Temple Gate Games sits and talks about her "Exhibitor" badge and what she is doing at KublaCon. Their products can be seen at Templegategames.com 1:20:00 We sign off for the day. As always thanks for listening and please share with your friends and family.

Mike Eckert, the Executive Producer, of Kublacon is back with our third interview 14 Days before Kublacon. Saul and Jolene get a bit of his time to talk about Kublacon which is only 14 days away. Mike is super busy getting ready to put on one of the biggest gaming conventions on the West Coast and it right here in the San Francisco Bay Area. We have been attending Kublacon from the very beginning and it was Augustin's ,Saul and Jolene's son, first game convention at the tender age of 6 months. Augustin does not know a Memorial Day Weekend without Kubla, as we lovingly call it. So we wrangled some free minutes of Mike's time away from Kubla work and he chatted with us about his escapades in the last year attending numerous gaming conventions across the U.S. and using that knowledge to make changes to certain elements of how Kublacon does certain things. As always with a larger gaming con in a high populated area, rooms, parking and overall Kubla experience at the fore front of Mike's mind. Using what he learned from numerous other cons and feedback of 18 years of previous Kublacons convinced Mike and his Kublacon Staff to make some small changes. As with all our interview episodes this is minimally edited and a bit longer than our usual episodes but we do enjoy doing them. As always thank you all for listening and all we ask is that you please share our podcast with your family and friends. For more info on Kublacon go to https://www.kublacon.com/ You can still buy a badge and pre-register for games before you get to the con. Pre-game registration closes on May 15th!
Kublacon is only a couple weeks away and we have another interview with a Kublacon staff member. This time Becky Thomas the Coordinator of Kublacon Youth Program joins us on the microphone. Me and Jolene have known Becky since Augustin was a baby going into Kublacon's then Kids Room, where Becky was in charge. She ran a very busy and growing population of kid gamers at Kublacon. Now the Kid's Room is split into two separate rooms one for younger children and teens. It has been amazing to see the program that Becky runs grow from a good sized room of 40-50 kids to hundreds. Saul and Jolene find out what an awesome gamer, teacher, storyteller and true pillar of the gamer community Becky has been for over 30 years. As always thank you all for listening and all we ask is that you share our podcast with friends and family. Becky Thomas runs the Roleplay Workshop for more info go to https://roleplayworkshop.com/ On Facebook https://www.facebook.com/RoleplayWorkshop/ On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/roleplayworkshop/ Becky is also running her Abantey Game at Kublacon in the Teen room on Friday from 6pm to Midnight. Sign up at the Teen Room.
Continuing our Pre-Kublacon interviews, we got Vern R. to join us this time. Vern is the RPG Coordinator for Kublacon and Pacificon. He is a LONG time gamer and has played with many excellent gamers from the SF Bay Area. A local kid Vern grew up in the heart of what would become Silicon Valley. His gamer story is filled with long treks to hobby game stores and was even impacted by the Satanic Panic of the late 80's and 90's . He is a tireless worker at Kublacon, as I see him working and playing at Kublacon at all hours. Me and Jolene are grateful for taking time to join us and tell us his story. As all our interviews this is unedited. As always thanks for listening and all we ask is that you share our podcast with your family and friends.
A special guest this week on Mentioned in Dispatches as Friend-of-the-Regiment Anthony Gallela joins Brant & Mirth to talk all manner of games. We kick around what was played at PAX, what’s coming up at Huzzah! and KublaCon, and things we’ve seen at Origins, Manifest, and Historicon. But mostly, we riff on game collections, pre-painted minis, old-fashioned...
In this Episode we continue the Pre-Kublacon interviews, this one is with Alicia H. She is a long time gamer, gaming from back when she was a kid and starting RPGs when she was in Jr. High School. Saul saw her for many years but only thought that she played boardgames since that is all that he saw her play. But it turns out she is a RPG gamer from a young age. So in this episode Saul finds out that Alicia isn't a Latina, plays rpgs and is running her first rpg game at a game con at Kublacon. She is using her years of experience at working at a very popular haunted house that ran for many years here in the Bay Area. So her first game will be a Haunted House inspired CoC game. So listen and learn a bit about Alicia, like how to pronounce her name and many more interesting things about this Bay Area gamer and now GM at Kublacon. The recording got all messed up with the timing. We did the best we could to sync up the two different tracks and for the most part we got it to work. except for a bit toward the end where we just could not figure out the two audio tracks. It is still a great episode and we are very grateful for Alicia H. for joining us on the microphone. As always we thank you all for listening and all we ask is that you share our podcast with your friends and family.
Another episode in our Pre-Kublacon interview series we talk to Wendy-Ann and John who are in charge of Pathfinder Society for the Bay Area. Wendy-Ann and John do an amazing job being representatives for Paizo organized play. They are the Venture Captains for the South Bay. Wendy-Ann and John are the people in charge of Organized play at Kublacon. They do an amazing job by running over a hundred tables of Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society organized play at Kublacon. In our interview they talk about their beginning in roleplaying way back in 1975!! How they came to the U.S. and lived on the East Coast moved West to make their home here in the Bay Area and go to their first convention in 2011?? Yes.. 2011! How they went from playing Pathfinder Society to running three of ten the biggest Pathfinder Society events at conventions. It is a great story. I learned quite a bit about these two delightful people who do a tremendous amount of work and are true goodwill ambassadors of our great hobby. I would like to thank them for talking to us and giving us insight to their lives and the running of Pathfinder Society events. So if your at Kublacon and the shuffler has not been kind to you. Check out the Pathfinder Society area where Wendy-Ann and John will do their best to get you playing Pathfinder and having fun!! I truly thank John and Wendy-Ann for doing the interview. We will be doing two episodes Live From Kublacon Recording on Saturday and Sunday. We will have extra microphones so stop by and say hi and tell us how your Kublacon is going. As always thanks for listening and all we ask is for you to share our podcast with your family and friends.
When you interview someone that has been around hobby gaming longer than you been alive you never know what you going to get. We did know we were going to get a wealth of information about local gaming conventions. We discover why Mark is one if not the only person that GM's Arduin at Dundracon, because of his special connection to that classic rpg. Also as the event planner for DDC, Mark also gives us an inside peek of cons that we as attendees don't usually see. Add a very frank conversation about all the local game cons that Mark goes to and you get an informative and at times surprising revelations. Like what Bay Area game con has the best rpg games? Listen to find out. Join us for a great talk with Mark Schynert the "event planner" at DDC and active attendee at Kublacon and other Bay Area Cons. Thanks for listening and all we ask is that you share our podcast in your social networks.
Another bonus interview episode this time is with Kublacon GM Mike G. He has been running games at local cons for many years and he is one GM that is not afraid to play new or different games. We learn about his early intro into rpgs and why he likes to play rpgs that are a bit off the beaten path. Mike also shares with us how his gaming con experience has changed for the better because of a different way of looking at attending gaming conventions. This interview gives great insight into a really determined GM that wants to give players a great con experience. Find out what game he is running and if it intrigues you, sign up and play in one of Mike Garcia's games you won't regret it. See you at Kublacon!!! Here is a link to Golden Sky Stories. Kublacon the convention that takes place here in the Bay Area in Northern California over the Memorial Day Weekend is the biggest game con on the West Coast. Saul and Jolene decided to ask GM, Con-attendees why they like gaming cons and Kublacon specifically. The first one to be interviewed was Honda C., she started playing while in Jr High School but stopped in High School as her gaming friends found other "cooler" things to do. We learn why she likes game cons and why Kublacon is such a good convention for her. Every point she made we totally agree with. Listen to this gamer that found gaming just a few years ago and is making up for lost time. From what she told us, she is making up for lost gaming time. Thanks for doing the interview Honda! Matt joins us on our 2nd Pre-Kublacon interview. It is strange to think that over the last 35 years Saul and Matt had crossed paths many times but only really got to know each other by going to local game cons in Bay Area. Matt shares with Saul and Jolene quite a bit of his history and how a kid from North Dakota came to the Golden State and settled in the Bay Area. Matt is a popular GM at game conventions. Matt tells us why Kublacon is very special to him. We apologize for the wonky audio but it happens sometimes when dealing with the finicky internet. Still I think it is a very worthwhile to listen to this interview even with the less than perfect sound. Thanks for listening and please share our podcast on your social networks. In this episode we have our first interview with Mike Eckert the new Executive Producer of KublaCon. Kublacon is Northern California's biggest gaming convention. We ask Mike about his gaming roots. When he first starting going to conventions in the SF Bay Area and how that led to helping and running of conventions over 20 years ago. After all those years of helping run Kublacon he is now the Executive Producer, he basically runs the show. We talk about Kublacon's humble beginning and now that he is running the show we ask about if he plans on changing Kublacon. We ask about the challenges of the con attendance as it has exploded over the last few years. Mike gives us some exclusive information about specific plans for next years Kublacon. This show was not as edited as most of our shows as it was our first foray into doing a remote interview. I think it turned out really well and we hope to interview and talk others in the gaming industry. Music by John Bartman, song "Gameshow Brazz". Available at Freemusicarchive.com
In Episode Four Saul and Jolene discuss putting on a big game, or large event at a gaming convention. We talk about our experience running a large event. We with the help of many friends we put on Aliens: Live Action Boardgame at KublaCon in Northern California. We discuss the elation and amount of work needed to put on a large event at a convention. A special thanks to Jeff Wilcox the Special Events Co-ordinator at KublaCon. Sorry I totally forgot his name during recording. Without him giving my crazy idea a chance without really knowing me, allowed me and my friends to create a great experince running our Aliens: Live Action Boardgame at Kublacon. Thank you very much Jeff!! Another thanks go to Rennie Saunders, Jeff's assistant who worked many times side by side getting our game ready to the show. Could not have done the game without them both! And thanks to the people that helped put this event on. From Felipe who mentioned the original game he saw and said we should do it. To the C0-Gms that helped us put on the game, from the Alien and Marine Handlers to the "Bucket Monkey" to the "Wheel of Death" holder that made our game as good as it could be. Cipriano Morales, Cathy May, Blaine Story, Don Blake, Jolene Morales and Ken. And to all the people that stuck around after the games were over and helped this weary group peel hundred of feet of masking tape off the floor, and take down the barriers we used in the game. Thanks for a great experience! Music by Metalogue playing Fatal Extremes Available at FreeMusicArchive.com

It's time for our yearly report from one of our favorite conventions, Kublacon, so Mike recruits RP_OK's Ben Lee for a deep dive about gaming. We'll start by breaking down some of our favorite systems, including why fifth edition D&D is so good, why Feng Shui character creation works so well, and how obsessed Ben is with Mass Effect. Then we'll talk the con itself - the games we played, what worked, what didn't, and both Mike as a GM and the con itself could improve for next time. Check it out!
