In general, consolidating several microbiology labs into one and automating our processes facilitates innovation and efficiency and creates a safer patient environment. But consolidation and total laboratory automation (TLA) also come with challenges. So, what do pathologists and laboratory professionals need to think about as we transition to centralized labs and implement TLA systems? On this episode of Inside the Lab, our hosts Dr. Dan Milner and Ms. Kelly Swails are joined by Dr. Sarah Buss, PhD, D(ABMM), Microbiology Director for Northern Light Laboratory and Instructor for the Medical Laboratory Science Program at the University of Maine, Dr. Karissa Culbreath, PhD, Medical Director of Infectious Diseases at Tricore Reference Laboratories and Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Dr. Mark Fisher, PhD, Medical Director of the Bacteriology, Antimicrobials, Parasitology and Infectious Disease Rapid Testing Laboratories at ARUP and Assistant Professor of Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, and Dr. Erin McElvania, PhD, Director of Clinical Microbiology at NorthShore University Health System and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, to discuss consolidation and total laboratory automation in the microbiology lab.  Our panelists share the pros and cons of consolidation efforts in terms of patient safety and laboratory quality, explaining what they do to promote clinician interaction when the microbiology lab is centralized. They describe three popular TLA systems and weigh in on the personnel changes and contingency planning required when bringing automation to the microbiology lab. Listen in for insight on the benefits of decentralizing technology in consolidated systems and learn what innovative features are likely to be added to TLA platforms moving forward. Topics Covered ·  What the term consolidation refers to in the laboratory and some examples of how multiple hospitals or health systems can be served by a single lab·  The pros and cons of consolidation efforts in microbiology in terms of patient safety and laboratory quality·  The factors that determine what tests remain at smaller community hospital labs ·  How potential cost savings inform the decision to execute on consolidation·  The importance of contingency planning in automated labsConnect with ASCPASCPASCP on Twitter Connect with Dr. BussDr. Buss at Northern Light HealthDr. Buss on LinkedIn Connect with Dr. Culbreath Dr. Culbreath on TwitterConnect with Dr. FisherDr. Fisher at ARUPConnect with Dr. McElvania Dr. McElvania on TwitterConnect with Dr. Milner & Ms. SwailsDr. Milner on TwitterMs. Swails on Twitter Resources Inside the Lab in the ASCP Store

Let’s talk about total laboratory automation in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Highly automated systems are fairly common in the clinical chemistry and hematology labs, and they are increasingly common in clinical microbiology. Here are some of the questions we’ll answer today. What does total laboratory automation look like in the clinical microbiology laboratory? Are there still manual steps required? In other words, how total is total? What are the benefits of total laboratory automation? Is it good for the lab staff, the caregivers, or, best of all, the patients? What is like to convert your lab to total laboratory automation? What kind of time and resources are needed? Guests: Dr. Carey-Ann Burnham, Dr. Erin McElvania Links mentioned: Machine Learning Takes Laboratory Automation to the Next Level by B. Ford and E. #177: Has Trump been a good President? Tonight the episode looks into a debate that was had between two passionate individuals. One of those individuals is a trump supporter and believes that Trump has been a great president. The other debater does not feel that trump is a good president and is hopeful of a change next election cycle. The debate format is casual, with Christopher Tanner acting as the moderator. The concept of the debate is to allow for the two to discuss some major points about his presidency, policies and some overarching issues of the Republican Party. The debate initially started when Dallas offered $300 to anyone willing to debate him on if Trump is a great president. They agreed to donate the money to charity once the debate is over. ———————— Dallas D is taking the side that Trump is a great president and has done a great job. His bio: “I’m just a guy who likes debating ideas. I am a Nashville musician with a casual interest in politics. Mike and I grew up in the same town and went to elementary school and middle school together.” Miike S is taking the opposition and doesn’t think Trump has been good as a president. His position: “I hold the belief that Donald Trump as our president is bad for both America and the world. I believe Donald Trump’s rhetoric of ‘fake news’ and ‘alternative facts’ has cultivated a following that is willing to dismiss facts and scientific research as left wing media and liberal conspiracies. I think it is dangerous to have American voters groomed to distrust any media that challenges their political beliefs. I find his inept tweets and speeches condoning violence embarrassing and dangerous. He has failed domestically, where he demonstrates poor leadership and continues to drive a divide within our nation. He has failed abroad, where he embarrasses our nation, disrespects allies whilst celebrating violent regimes, and abandons the international community’s drive to protect our environment.” His bio: “I grew up in Evans, GA where I met Dallas in elementary school. I’ve since been friends with him mostly through social media where we’ve discussed different perspectives. I left Georgia in 2005 and moved to California, where I graduated college. I currently work and live in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the pharmaceutical industry as a Group Leader/Scientist in Laboratory Automation and Programming. I don’t discuss politics often since Trump’s election. However, I hold a general interest in different world perspectives and how politics shape societies. This interest has guided my travels to places like the Crimean peninsula, the Middle East, and North Korea. I don’t believe I hold any merit that especially qualifies me to understand Trump’s presidency better than anyone else, and I hope to be viewed as an average voting American sharing my perspective.” Subscribe: http://www.spreaker.com/user/cellardoorskeptics Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CellarDoorSkeptics RSS Feed: https://www.spreaker.com/user/8326690/episodes/feed iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/cellar-door-skeptics/id1044088575?mt=2&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 Website: http://cellardoorskeptics.com Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/cellar-door-skeptics Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cellardoorskeptics PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/CellarDoorSkeptics Intro Music: http://aloststateofmind.com/
