"How do you rebuild when everything you've known is completely shattered in a single day?"In this powerful episode of Life in Transition, host Art Blanchford speaks with Melissa Saleh about her journey through devastating loss and remarkable rebirth. Melissa shares how a single day in 2014—when she lost her daughter at birth—shattered her entire existence, leading to the end of her marriage, career, and life in New York City. She describes the process of hitting rock bottom and how she began rebuilding in Charleston, South Carolina, finding healing through food, nature, and putting creative energy into renovating her home.Melissa reveals how trauma invaded her nervous system and required years of intensive healing work, including a dedicated year focused solely on trauma therapy. She discusses developing powerful intuitive skills, learning to surrender to pain instead of avoiding it, and how this transformation led to a loving marriage and two healthy children that doctors said would be impossible. The conversation offers profound insights on living with uncertainty, the importance of self-love, and how trauma can be transcended—not eliminated—to create a meaningful, authentic life aligned with one's deepest values.Melissa Saleh is a force of nature—former lawyer and journalist turned serial entrepreneur, masterful storyteller, and advocate for survivors of trauma. Episode Description: In this episode of What If For Authors, Claire dives into the deeply personal question: What if I'm not a great writer? With candor and compassion, Claire explores what the idea of “greatness” even means in the world of writing, reminding us how subjective and vague that term can be. She examines how societal expectations and personal insecurities can distort our self-perception as writers and offers practical, grounded strategies for dealing with the anxiety this question can bring up. Key Takeaways: Defining “Greatness” in Writing: Claire unpacks the concept of “great” in writing, showing how it's almost impossible to define universally. Is greatness based on sales, ratings, critical acclaim, longevity? Claire reminds us that each reader has their own standard, making greatness in writing a subjective term that may not be worth obsessing over. Perfection Isn't a Requirement for Success: We've all read bestsellers that didn't resonate or books with high ratings that seemed flawed. Claire highlights how this disconnect reminds us that being a successful writer doesn't mean appealing to everyone's standard of “great.” Your writing doesn't have to meet every possible benchmark to matter. Learning Through the Pain of Growth: Improving as a writer is beneficial not only for our craft but also for our well-being. Learning can be intimidating because it often means confronting past mistakes or gaps in knowledge. Claire suggests viewing that discomfort as a sign of growth, reframing cringe-worthy moments as proof of progress. Using Anxiety as a Call to Action: Anxiety around not being a “great” writer can be reframed as a call to action. Instead of letting anxiety paralyze us, Claire recommends channeling it into meaningful activities like learning a new writing skill, taking a craft course, or practicing a specific storytelling technique. Completing the Stress Cycle: To manage lingering anxiety, Claire encourages listeners to complete their stress cycle with physical activity or relaxation techniques. Recognizing and acting on anxiety in a healthy way helps us stay present and productive, avoiding the endless loops of worry that don't serve us. A Practical Approach When Doubting Your Writing: Recognize that “great” is a subjective, often meaningless label. Embrace anxiety as a signal that there may be an opportunity for growth. Channel that energy into learning something new about your craft, but don't let fear drive you into information overload. Complete the stress cycle with movement or a calming activity to bring yourself back to a grounded state. Why You Should Listen: This episode is for any writer who has ever doubted their skill or wondered if they're truly capable of being “great.” Claire offers both mindset shifts and practical strategies to help you reframe these questions in a way that encourages growth without letting fear take the lead. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by self-doubt or the pressure to excel, this episode will leave you feeling reassured, empowered, and ready to keep moving forward. Join the Conversation: Have you questioned your abilities as a writer? What does “greatness” mean to you? In the podcast episode we delve into the captivating story of Stacia Miller, who evolved from a reluctant pottery student to a master craftswoman with her own studio. Emphasizing the significance of experimentation, Stacia shares how she developed her distinctive slip trailing technique and finds inspiration from her peers. The episode highlights her intuitive design process, her husband's supportive role, and her foray into glaze chemistry. Listeners are encouraged to embrace their creative evolution, with Stacia advocating for the joy of making pottery and the importance of having fun in discovering one's artistic voice. You can learn more about stacia by checking out her instagram @claybystacia Top 3 Value Bombs: 1. **Embrace Experimentation**: One of the key takeaways from Stacia's story is the importance of experimentation in the creative process. She emphasizes that trying a wide range of techniques and materials is crucial for discovering one's unique voice in pottery. This trial-and-error approach allows for personal growth and the development of a distinctive style. Stacia's journey illustrates that finding one's voice is not a fixed destination but an evolving path that benefits from continuous exploration and willingness to embrace change. 2. **Support Systems Matter**: Stacia's experience highlights the significance of having a supportive network, particularly mentioning the role her husband played in her pottery journey. His support in handling logistics and providing financial stability before her craft became profitable was invaluable. This underscores the importance of having a solid foundation and support system when pursuing a passion, especially in the early stages when the venture may not be immediately lucrative. 3. **The Joy of Teaching and Learning**: Through teaching pottery classes, Stacia found that not only was she able to impart her knowledge to others, but she also learned from her students. This reciprocity in the learning process can lead to new insights and techniques that might not have been discovered otherwise. Moreover, the act of teaching reinforces one's understanding of their craft and often requires a deeper analysis of techniques, which can lead to further refinement of skills. Stacia encourages those interested in teaching to jump in and start, even if they don't have all the details figured out, emphasizing the growth that comes from the teaching experience itself. It's a two-part podcast looking at one topic: exploring ways arts are being encouraged in communities. First up, philanthropist Adrienne Arsht. Arsht discusses her long-term support for the arts-- at The Kennedy Center, at Lincoln Center, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and reflecting upon her decision to make a sizable donation to sustain the performing arts center in Miami ---now the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami-Dade County which had been about close. Arsht also discusses the importance of having a performing arts center in every great city and highlights how Miami's diverse community was reflected in the center's programming from the beginning. Arsht also discusses her commitment to arts education through the flagship program "Learning Through the Arts" at the Adrian Arsht Center and her ground-breaking funding of paid internships at both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Adrienne Arsht Center, emphasizing the importance of breaking down barriers that prevent talented individuals from pursuing internships and the positive impact of these programs. Then we hear from Debbie Shapiro the artistic director of the Marie Rader Presenting Series at Rowan University. The series brings award-winning and emerging artists to South Jersey, emphasizing transformative engagement that goes beyond performances which includes direct interactions between world-class artists and students, as well as partnerships with community organizations in the region. Shapiro discusses the series and its curation which is unique in that it's integrated within the College of Performing Arts at Rowan University, allowing for close collaboration with faculty and a focus on aligning the artist selections with the educational offerings of the university. The programming reflects the diversity of the audience which comprises community members, Rowan students, university employees, faculty from various area colleges, and families of the students.

Daily Devotion - Matthew 6:33 - Learning Through The ProcessThere is a song called " Praise Him in Advance". Initially, when I first heard this song, I did not understand the lyrics.Going Through a StormAt the time, when the song came out, I was in the process of a divorce and I was angry. I recall thinking how can I praise him in advance when I don't know how He's going to work it out. I was perplexed about how I was going to sell my business, provide for my daughters, and create a future of myself. I was going through so many emotions at the time. I remember asking God "Why would you allow me to experience this?". I believe this is what most of us call going through a storm. In hindsight, I allowed my storm to overwhelm me. I was completely consumed with solving my problems. Why did I think I had to find an answer to every problem? Because we are brainwashed by the world into believing that we must know everything at every moment. God does not operate that way. There are times when we won’t see our way and it seems impossible. But God majors in the impossible. In my mind, I had become overwhelmed because I was trying to solve my problem instead of allowing God to solve them. Most of the time many of us struggle with the solution. I believe God wants us to learn from the process, not just the solution.Learning Through the ProcessJesus Christ found me at the darkest time in my life, picked me up out of the gutter, and accepted me as I accepted Him into my heart. As I live, I have learned to grow from my relationship with God. God wants to take our relationship deeper. When was the last time you wore your pants out praying on your knees? Have you ever done an all-night prayer meeting? For most of us, the answers to these questions are no. To get extraordinary power, we must go deeper with Christ. Today, commit yourself to go deeper in Christ. The solution should not just be your focus. The process is important. Please pay attention to the process. I finally did. Lesson Learned.God's ReminderBut seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Marni welcomes author and dating after divorce expert Holly Martyn into the Den to discuss her dating manual and memoir, Would It Kill You to Put on Some Lipstick?. Her book was inspired by an advice column by Joan Rivers and tells the story of Holly’s poignant journey of finding a high-quality guy in 100 or fewer dates. It's a manual on how to navigate love, life, and happiness in midlife. Key takeaways from this episode: 3 strategies to meet a high-quality guy Dating is a numbers game The importance of prioritizing your love life The wonderful aspects of dating in your 40s and 50s How to ask a man what he is looking for without wasting your time Dating is a Numbers Game [2:07] Joan Rivers started the conversation in an advice column. She told a single mother to put on some damn lipstick and get out there and date. Holly wondered if finding a high-quality guy really was a numbers game and decided to try it out for herself and journal her journey. She was in her 40s, had been in two long term relationships and it wasn't working. She didn't want her daughter to grow up knowing her mother stayed in a bad relationship. Holy says demonstrating to our children about what works and what doesn't when finding love is a teachable moment. It’s ok for our children to know that we are human beings and we are still learning. 3 Ways to Get a Date: Online/Dating Apps Ask friends and family if they know someone. Go out and get a meal by yourself and talk to new people. All three options worked for Holly. She met men and women. One woman set her up on a blind date with a guy she dated for two years. Whatever it is we prioritize in our lives we can make it happen. including our social lives. You just have to keep going on dates. It's like looking for a job. The dating process is a great way to know about men. Use the time to notice possible red flags. Learning Through the Dating Process [19:10] The adage is true ‘If we don’t change, nothing changes’. Holly had to examine relationships from her childhood and her previous marriages to see why those relationships broke down. Eventually, she became stronger and more confident in what she was looking for and how she wanted to be treated and she became more efficient in weeding out the wrong people upfront. Women, especially women in their 40s and 50s need to ask a man what he is looking for within the first three dates. Figuring out if a guy is looking for the same thing as you is nothing to be ashamed of. Your time is important don’t waste it on a guy who doesn’t want a relationship if that is what you want. Men will show you who they are very quickly. One of the wonderful things about dating in your 40s, 50s, and beyond is something is freeing about not having the pressure of looking for a provider, a father, or someone our parents will approve of. Look for character more than characteristics. Holly reaches out to all the women who stay in relationships or marriages but have doubts about it, she says it’s more important to be a model for your children about the beauty of contentment and satisfaction. Dr. Upitis is a recipient of the 2012 Queen’s Prizes for Excellence in Research. A leading international scholar in arts education and the relatively new field of educational architecture, she has a long record of successful and significant research. After researching innovative teaching techniques for music, and mathematics and science learning software, Dr. Upitis conducted a major study on how engagement with the arts supports teachers and improves learning. She served a six-year term as Research Co-director of the Royal Conservatory’s Learning Through the Arts Program, and her study was the first of its scope conducted in Canada and the largest of its type to date. Dr. Upitis also conducted ground-breaking research on the impact of school design on learning, achieving a Diploma in Architectural Technology in the process. Then, bringing together her previous work in the arts and digital spaces, she and her partners at the Royal Conservatory and Concordia University developed iSCORE, a unique and free online music tool that offers a wide range of features to teachers and students. The research partners are currently beginning a project to investigate the learning potential of iSCORE in North America that is being supported a SSHRC Partnership Grant worth nearly $2 million dollars, a Canada Foundation for Innovation Grant and additional funding (making the total nearly $4 million). If proven successful, iSCORE may be distributed throughout Europe and Asia (project news is available at iscorenews.com).
