In this Episode #32, We delve into the fascinating story of human evolution, tracing our journey from single-celled organisms to the complex beings we are today. Starting 6-7 million years ago, when our lineage split from a common ancestor with chimpanzees, we explore key milestones like the rise of early hominins such as Australopithecus and the emergence of Homo habilis and Homo erectus. These species laid the groundwork for traits like bipedalism, tool use, and larger brain size. We'll also discuss the evolutionary forces that shaped us, including natural selection, genetic drift, and climate change. Beyond mainstream science, we explore unconventional theories like the Stoned Ape Theory, which suggests psychedelics may have played a role in our cognitive evolution and much more. One of the most important lessons I've learned during my dating (and business) journey is to ENJOY the process vs focusing on the destination. I know how annoying it is to hear that when all you want is to meet your person already, buy the house, travel the world, and pop out a couple of babies. But the truth is, if you don't learn how to enjoy the process, you're setting yourself up to fail and years of misery both as single and in a relationship. Say what, Sy? If you don't learn to enjoy the dating process, you're going to also struggle the marriage journey, which has it's own set of challenges. On this episode, you'll learn: Why enjoying the dating process is essential to your mental and emotional health HOW to actually enjoy the process with tangible mindset shifts and tangible actions you can take starting right now Special podcast announcement! A few bad dates, or relationships, can easily knock our confidence. Why did we miss the flags? Can we trust ourselves to choose well? Emotional Intelligence coach, Emile Steenveld, shares some key ways to cultivate and strengthen our self trust as we date so we can move forward with confidence (plus he teaches a great exercise to get over your ex on the way!) Brought to you by La Vette - an intentional dating platform for self-aware singles. Apply now and try it for free: https://portal.lavette.love/ About Emile: Emile coaches entrepreneurs who are ready to fill that "missing piece'' inside of them. Using a holistic approach, experiential exercises, and practical tools, he will lead you through your own transformational journey. People who appear to have that proverbial successful “dream life”, bold and confident on the outside yet unfulfilled and empty on the inside, whilst boxed into an image of having it all, are the ones who work with Emile. His clients are typically creative and practical people who are hyper-visible (either in their work, the media, or as leaders). Their highest values are growth, integrity, and fun. They are the people who can dream up an idea and build a team to produce that idea; the people who know how to achieve results above average. However, they are also the people who don't know how to relax without feeling guilty, the people who don't know how to mend relationships with their children, spouse, or parents, and the ones who constantly need to hustle and grind to feel purposeful. 59 - Being Grateful in the Dating Process

Dating, Relationships, and Disability

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2022 10:34

If you're someone out there trying to date or even wanting to date and maybe you're not yet seeing the results you want, it may be challenging to feel grateful for the dating process. When you're feeling lonely, isolated, and not receiving the attention you are so craving from others, being grateful may very well be the last thing you want to feel. But it could be so helpful.Hear me out on this. According to Harvard Health, “Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” Basically, gratitude changes our state of mind from one of lack to looking at what we do have.I know you're saying, “But what do I have? I don't have a girlfriend or boyfriend. I can't even get people to swipe on my profile.”I realize how hard being alone can feel. I had many years of enduring that feeling. It definitely doesn't feel good. But this right here, when nothing feels like it's working and you're lonely as hell, is when you most need that sense of gratitude. What to be Grateful for About Dating I'm encouraging you to look at whatever your dating experience has been and find what you're grateful for. There has to be something. Whether it's a relationship that ended, but taught you something about yourself or a quality about your personality that you have learned about yourself in pursuing relationships. Maybe it's something that when it happened, you felt angry or resentful, but then after time, you realized there was some blessing in that not so great experience. I remember dating a guy for a few months and really liking him, but he broke it off. When he did he told me he wanted to be with someone who was “more into their body.” I of course took offense to this but over time, I realized that I was not really appreciating the body (and figure!) I had in my early thirties. So I was eventually grateful for that “nudge” by that former boyfriend.Step into gratitude by looking at what you're learning about the dating process, even through failure. Are you learning to better communicate through trial and error? Are you getting a better sense of the kind of person you want to be with? Maybe you're learning what you won't tolerate in relationships? There IS something you're grateful for, my friend. Find it. Name it. Own it. And use it to help you get even better in dating and relationships.Simple Exercise There's no resource guide for this podcast because I want you to do a very simple exercise. Take out your phone, tablet, or even a good old fashioned index card. Write or record what you're grateful for. Look at it every day, preferably multiple times a day, until it's embedded in your beautiful brain. Embody what you're grateful for. If you do this, you'll begin to notice a change in your thinking and approach to dating and relationships. Things will begin to feel more doable. There's a lot within you to be grateful for, my friend, as well as the journey you're on. Everything is happening for a reason. Trust that.Music by Successful Motivation | Artwork photo by Elevate

She never lets on about why she didn't meet four families but it may imply she already knows who she is choosing as her partner.   Marni questions why two of the guys, Jason and Johnny, who got all the way to this point tell their parents they don't think they can marry Gabby in the near future. Gabby insists she is ready for a long-term relationship.   When you are ambivalent or unclear about your vision and core values you will attract people who are the same.   Gabby displays a pinkish flag when she asks Jason's family if there is a side of Jason that she isn't seeing. Dr. Emily points out that the three guys Gabby has chosen are vastly different types of guys. Is Gabby trying on different types of guys to see what fits her best?   Marni says Gabby is amazing and needs to get over her feelings of being broken.   Gabby tells Erich she is falling in love with him!   Rachel Hometown [15:18]   While Rachel took advantage of all four of her hometown opportunities, she should have saved Tyler time, energy, and heartbreak and skipped his. For their date, Tyler had all of his friends at the hot dog stand and Rachel tells him goodbye. Dr. Emily thinks Rachel wanted to be interested in Tyler but just couldn't get there.   It's a bummer Tyler said I love you before Rachel broke up with him. Her communication skills definitely need some work. She is such a people pleaser she prolonged the news for much too long. She should have given Tyler a little more respect.   If a guy is great on paper but you are not into him and this happens over and over again, you need to Life Check Yourself!   Of the three guys left, Marni and Dr. Emily believe Rachel should choose Zach. He may be plain vanilla but he shows the most promise. But she is likely to choose Tino even after the somewhat defeating hometown visit with him.   Did Tino's family know he went on a reality show? Considering they think the concept of a reality dating show is silly. Rachel reacts victimy and takes their comments personally choosing to believe that it is more about her than the concept.   Will Gabby bow out and leave the crown to Rachel?   Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join our Ignite Your Life event! Putting yourself out there can feel vulnerable & nerve-racking. Sometimes, we can be overwhelmed in wondering where to even start when trying to date. Bethany & Ken Freire shared their experience and advise of taking the pressure off of dating so that you can meet great people & it can actually be fun! They answered so many common questions that come up like, “Where are all the good, Christian men? How do you know you're ready to date? How do you grow more comfortable in dating? Is it okay to date multiple people at the same time?” And they also answered the more specific questions sent in by listeners like “When do you talk about physical boundaries in a relationship? How do you involve community in a relationship in a healthy way? Is it okay to date someone you don't think you'll marry?” Their message is so encouraging that there is nothing disqualifying you from meeting someone great. There is always risk involved, but the risk is worth it! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This Bachelorette recap features real-life dating advice taken from the most recent episodes of the show. Marni and Man Panelist Chris Gillis talk about how much they like Katie, why kissing shouldn't be the end of a relationship, and the importance of getting the important, lifestyle questions out at the beginning of the dating process.    Key takeaways from this episode:  Less is more when it comes to physical alterations When to ask tough questions in the dating process Guys wank off all the time Predictions about Katie's frontrunners Katie Narrows Down the List [2:23] Connor, aka the Cat Guy, took a big hit after what seemed to be a great date. Katie says goodbye to him and when he asks why she twists the knife and says it was his kiss. Marni says Katie has other guys to choose from so she can be picky but in real life dating if you meet your version of Connor, don't let kissing be the end all be all. Katie should have been gentler with Connor. It IS possible to instruct and work with men who have challenges in the kissing department.  In a long-term relationship, the amount of kissing dwindles over the years. Don't judge someone based on a few kisses.  Marni and Chris agree the double date with Kaitlyn's new face was unnecessary. Why would the producers do it? And as far as changing your face or body because you think guys like it, Marni's advice is less is more, including spider-like eyelashes.  If you change your appearance to be what you think guys find attractive you are wrong.    The WOWO Challenge [13:43] The guys of the Bachelorette were given a challenge to not masturbate. The producers aired conversations about how much each one wanks off. Marni has a hard time believing some guys do it three times a day until Chris clarifies that it's true. He says it is important to get rid of all the bullets in your gun before a date, especially if you like a girl. He adds that men can turn primal and become dumb animals looking at T&A.  If the guy you are dating looks at porn, don't take it personally. It has nothing to do with you, men think about sex every 7 seconds.    Bachelorette Predictions: Who Will Katie Choose? [17:43] Katie can not keep a villain on the show. It is probably driving the producers crazy. As soon as there is drama Katie shuts it down and says goodbye to the guy causing it. When she discovered Hunter lied twice she asked him about it. He seemed disinterested in defending himself so she said goodbye. Chris predicts Katie will choose between Greg, Blake, and Andrew. He feels like she wants to hurry up and make a decision. Marni thinks Greg is the frontrunner.    Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! Learn how to attract your perfect equal...watch our latest training here! Marni speaks with Certified Financial Planner Sean Fitts about how he works with smart, professional women to create financial freedom and independence so they can get everything they want from life. If you are single, divorced, or widowed, Sean offers important money tips and insights you need to know about.   Key takeaways from this episode:  Understanding money basics Be confident about money The freedom of making smart financial decisions Asking questions about money when dating Must-have money conversations with potential partners Understanding the Basics [2:24] First and foremost, no matter what their relationship status is women need to understand money basics, says Sean. It is OK to delegate more in-depth monetary transactions but knowing the basics will keep a bank account from being overdrawn and, more importantly, provide financial security.    Don't be afraid to say "I don't know what that means”  when talking to a trusted advisor about financial planning.  The golden rule of financial security is to have a minimum of three months of what you spend, in cash and available to you in the event of an unintended major life event. Sean says, if you are single, protect your income with disability or job loss insurance.   Divorces and Deaths [21:04] Sometimes life throws us relationship curveballs. And, finances can change drastically as relationships change. Sean advises women to not make any major financial decisions or changes soon after a life shift. The goal is creating financial stability to help sort through the noise of the well-meaning people in our lives. Find your own voice and refrain from making emotionally-based money decisions.    Dating and Money Fundamentals [21:04] Money is important to talk about while dating. Sean says unless you want to raise a child, a man should be able to pay his own way. If you value financial security, it is important to ask money questions early because financial decisions affect every long-term relationship.     Many men believe they will work until they die. Financial planning is about more than having an income.    The right guy is willing to have money conversations because they want the same things from a relationship.     Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! We had a good time, he kissed me (first) and it was in front of someone who's flirting with him while I was beside him. I just felt over the moon because no one has ever done that for me. But I realized he never asked me any questions about me. So it got me thinking... does he want to know about me or did he just want a one night stand. I didn't want to be his one night stand, my intention was to date. I don't have to be in a rush for commitment but I like the guy. I don't have any expectations but I still want to keep an open mind for whatever could potentially happen. Should I text him again. Uuugh I'm frustrated because I don't know what to say and what to do? I felt bad for easily sleeping with him. Me: It's so easy to get excited when a man 'picks' us but we have to slow down our feelings. "feeling over the moon" doesn't mean he's the guy for you/us. We have to slow that down. Unfortunately he sounds like a guy who just wants to have you around when he has time. He'll string you along and give you just enough to keep you "interested." Don't ever let a man save you for later. One thing I know for sure after truly understanding that Singleness Is Not A Punishment is that there will be NO confusing when you come across a man that is 100% interested in you/no games. [1:30]  Many women rely on their stories to guide them in their search for love. We say things like “there are no good men in my town” or “I’m too successful” or “there are no men worth my time”. Some of us argue for our limitations and unwittingly block ourselves from relationships.  Emyrald busts the myth that finding love in a remote place is difficult. She shares her story of consciously manifesting 3 men in her life. She even started a four-year relationship with a guy in a tiny, backwater town in Ecuador.    It doesn't matter where you are, you can manifest everything you want in a partner.  To manifest the guy you desire, Emyrald says it all comes down to getting clear about what you want and removing what is blocking you. And, for many women, the blocks are just the stories they are telling themselves. Is your story serving you?  Feel into what a partnership would look like and ask yourself if you can embody that level of commitment in all aspects of your life. Be ready to commit with your mind, body, and soul.    Is Your Love Shield Up? [10:18] To figure out what your limiting beliefs or blocks to finding love are, Emyrald suggests writing a letter to God. She recommends asking God to let her guidance work through your pen. Then, let the answers within your heart spill out onto the page.  Feelings caused by fear have excited angst about them. Intuition has a loving tone to it.  Remember that nothing anyone else does is about you. If you are triggered by something a partner does it is about your wounds, not theirs. Use the opportunity to grow and connect with them at a deeper level.   Growing Closer Through  [22:00] It seems difficult at the moment, but we can use ‘regrettable incidents’ in a relationship to grow closer to our partner. We can also learn not to be triggered by external stressors that create knee jerk reactions.  Emyrald says, open and honest communication is key.  For women, it is important they use their emotional intelligence and speak up about what is important to them from the very beginning of the dating process. Women tend to play the 'cool' girl. We act like things don't bother us because we don't want to be the crazy woman that is overly emotional. But, if we are communicative and truly understand our needs, your partner will respond accordingly.  Marni says that when we are with someone who is equally committed to the relationship bumps in the road become opportunities to grow closer.    Emotional Intelligence is a skill that can be learned.    Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! In this episode of the Dating Den, Marni has a one-on-one coaching session with Jennifer. Jennifer has decided that she would rather be alone than continue dating men who don’t fit her mold of Mr. Right for her. Marni helps Jennifer to identify what she can do to shift her paradigm.   Key takeaways from this episode:  Recognizing emotional unavailability Breaking down emotional barriers Why it’s ok to let your guard down The problem with making assumptions Changing your dating mindset   Independence or Protection from Pain? [1:42] Jennifer never thought she would be alone when she turned 50. Everyone she knows asks her how is it that she is still single. She meets possible dates online, she has done all the personal development work yet she can’t seem to find the right guy for her. When she does date someone she gives up after 3-4 dates.  She admits to being independent, knowing her worth, and her resolve to not settle for anyone who doesn’t check all of her boxes. She has recovered from some tough stuff in life and is prepared to go it alone if need be.  Marni bluntly asks Jennifer what she is protecting herself from. Jennifer opens up a bit and reveals she doesn't want to get hurt again and she feels that if she cuts off the contact first she feels in control of the situation. Marni reminds her that she is protective of her emotional safety. She puts up a giant shield to protect herself.  Is your mask of independence really an unhealed wound?   Becoming Emotionally Available [15:55] Jennifer realizes she put up a barrier to protect herself and moves quickly away when she is triggered by things she thinks will hurt her. She is attracting men who prove her right and she instinctively rules guys out when she could be collecting more data.  Marni says she will attract a whole different set of men when she is energetically, consciously, emotionally, and unconsciously more open.  The fact that she is dating guys who are dating other women shows that they are emotionally unavailable just like she is. She is consistently attracting the same thing over and over again.  Until she is 100% emotionally available she won't attract the kind of guy she is looking for.    Jennifer’s takeaways are: She will collect data with a different mindset. No more preconceived notions or self-fulfilling prophecies? She will be conscious of her thoughts. No more saying she would rather be alone. She will give her emotional hurts some love and attention.   Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! Marni reached out to her Facebook group to find someone who is actively dating online but not getting the desired results. Monica responded.  She is on two different dating apps but receives very few responses. Those who do respond end up ghosting her. Marni provides her with quick fixes and tips on how to increase the amount of dates she gets and elevate the quality of her dating experiences.    Key takeaways from this episode:  Tips for a better online dating profile Verbiage in your profile you should change now Why professional photos are important The right mindset for creating your online profile    I’m a Successful Woman, Why Am I Not Getting Dates?  [2:21]  Monica is a successful film-industry professional who is winding down her career. She is having difficulty finding love again after her divorce. She did have one 8-month relationship since then, but it ended in heartbreak. She says she just wants to go on a damn date. Like many successful women, Monica has done the personal development work and is serious about finding a partner to share life with. Monica spends 20-30 minutes every morning checking her dating apps and responding to messages. She has telephone conversations but hasn't had a first date in 6 months. On top of that, she only went out on 4 dates in 2019. She says she gets ghosted a lot.    Building a Better Online Dating Profile [6:22]  Marni dissects Monica’s current online dating profile pointing out tips for improvement in the first paragraph. She points out that Monica is a little too much in her masculine and if she was interviewing for a job all of her points are valid, BUT she is not looking for a job she is looking for a relationship.     Reread your online dating profile. What would a strong, high-quality guy think about it?  Quick Fixes for Your Dating Profile:  The first sentence is really important! Describe yourself and be clear about what your guy is like.  Get into a wise/soft/empowered state of mind.  Remember you have 30 seconds to make a first impression. Don’t let your frustration about dating leak into your profile.   How Monica Can Move Forward [6:22] Marni offers different ways to pull more information out of the men who send messages and ask for dates. Her advice is for Monica to be vulnerable and to “show him the yolk”.    Monica’s Biggest Takeaways from the coaching:   She enjoyed finding out why the information she is putting in her profile isn't rewarded with communication and more interest.  She may be displaying an armored love shield and speaking in her masculine. She will practice having vulnerable conversations.  Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! Marni welcomes author and dating after divorce expert Holly Martyn into the Den to discuss her dating manual and memoir, Would It Kill You to Put on Some Lipstick?. Her book was inspired by an advice column by  Joan Rivers and tells the story of Holly’s poignant journey of finding a high-quality guy in 100 or fewer dates. It's a manual on how to navigate love, life, and happiness in midlife.   Key takeaways from this episode:  3 strategies to meet a high-quality guy Dating is a numbers game The importance of prioritizing your love life The wonderful aspects of dating in your 40s and 50s How to ask a man what he is looking for without wasting your time   Dating is a Numbers Game [2:07]  Joan Rivers started the conversation in an advice column. She told a single mother to put on some damn lipstick and get out there and date. Holly wondered if finding a high-quality guy really was a numbers game and decided to try it out for herself and journal her journey. She was in her 40s, had been in two long term relationships and it wasn't working.    She didn't want her daughter to grow up knowing her mother stayed in a bad relationship. Holy says demonstrating to our children about what works and what doesn't when finding love is a teachable moment. It’s ok for our children to know that we are human beings and we are still learning. 3 Ways to Get a Date:  Online/Dating Apps Ask friends and family if they know someone. Go out and get a meal by yourself and talk to new people.    All three options worked for Holly. She met men and women. One woman set her up on a blind date with a guy she dated for two years.  Whatever it is we prioritize in our lives we can make it happen. including our social lives.  You just have to keep going on dates. It's like looking for a job. The dating process is a great way to know about men. Use the time to notice possible red flags.  Learning Through the Dating Process [19:10]  The adage is true ‘If we don’t change, nothing changes’. Holly had to examine relationships from her childhood and her previous marriages to see why those relationships broke down. Eventually, she became stronger and more confident in what she was looking for and how she wanted to be treated and she became more efficient in weeding out the wrong people upfront.  Women, especially women in their 40s and 50s need to ask a man what he is looking for within the first three dates. Figuring out if a guy is looking for the same thing as you is nothing to be ashamed of. Your time is important don’t waste it on a guy who doesn’t want a relationship if that is what you want.    Men will show you who they are very quickly. One of the wonderful things about dating in your 40s, 50s, and beyond is something is freeing about not having the pressure of looking for a provider, a father, or someone our parents will approve of. Look for character more than characteristics.  Holly reaches out to all the women who stay in relationships or marriages but have doubts about it, she says it’s more important to be a model for your children about the beauty of contentment and satisfaction.    Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! How do you maintain confidence throughout the dating process, even when things don't work out? Online dating has produced so many changes to how we date. Now, you can connect with thousands of singles in seconds, but how do you find the best match for you? When you operate from a  fear of rejection, even the most confident people are not immune to the negative impact it can have on your dating life.  On this episode, you will meet Katherine, who began coaching with Kim because she was in the market for an image and dating confidence makeover. Now that her pictures are getting her clicks and interest, she's deep in the throes of the online dating vortex and is struggling to have fun, be flirtatious and exude the confidence while on the dates. The good news is, she's got a ton of matches, the challenge is sorting through to find the *right* kind of guy she can get excited about. Kim and Katherine talk through her most recent hurdle -- two dates canceling last minute -- and what Katherine can do to manage her expectations and feelings of disappointment.  Kim talks about the paradox of choice and why more people report feeling higher levels of anxiety around it. When dating feels transactional, establishing a meaningful connection isn't easy!  If you're working to increase your self-esteem, or have little or negative dating experiences, these effects can be even more painful. But it can be if you are armed with knowledge, realistic expectations and a heavy dose of self-compassion.  This conversation is energetic, honest and leaves you with a positive impression that there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Kim talks Katherine through specific ways she can get out of her head on dates, release the burden of the expectation and shift her mindset to get a different result. If you're looking to gain more confidence in your flirting skills - back by popular demand - Kim is rebooting her 14-Day Flirt + Femininity Challenge on August 19th! Catherine had a successful career in mental health, but found her soul wasn't satisfied which is why at 50, she decided to "come out of the closet" about her spiritual journey. Why? Up to then if a person expressed interest in yoga or meditation of any form you were viewed as being suspect. Now of course it’s mainstream, but back then, not so. Hitting the half-century, Catherine ditched her corporate career, put up a website, and opened her own counselling practice incorporating psychotherapy and mindfulness, and while it wasn’t for everyone, it spoke to enough people that she made a good income. Out of that experience she wrote her first book, Shortcuts to Mindfulness: 100 Ways to Personal and Spiritual Growth. What happened next for Catherine is a classic example of listening to what you want to achieve in your mature life, then actioning your next steps and seeing where that leads. Often people don’t have a choice of consciously leaving their work or business, they’re put out to pasture because of their age. If that happens think positively as there’s a new beginning just around the corner, which is what Catherine experienced when she turned 60. Since she creater her dream career, her next goal was to find her dream partner. After a long trial-and-error in the dating world, she met the love of her life, and much to her surprise, people started coming to her for dating coaching, and so a new specialisation was born. Out of that Catherine’s second book was borne: Tantric Dating: Bringing Love and Awareness to the Dating Process, sharing what she learned and in talks, workshops and YouTube videos.
