Did Linford Christie take part in the Dad's race at his kids's school sports day?   Russell and Linford discuss what it's like to be bloody quick, what it's like to win an Olympic gold medal, and why Linford used to growl like a tiger at his competitors on the starting blocks.   It's a really interesting and intimate chat with a British legend, seeing a side to him that we rarely get to see.   It's really worth watching the documentary all about Linford's career and life. It's called simply ‘Linford', which is on BBC iPlayer, or if you're abroad it's on iPlayer with a VPN (wink wink). It really tells the story well, with fascinating insights and at times it gets pretty emotional.   You don't need me to give you a link to iPlayer. If you can't find that with a search engine then you deserve to have your internet taken away from you.   Russell is back out on the road doing all sorts of bits and bobs, with Canada coming up, also Sweden, Norway…check out his movements at Russell-howard.co.uk   That's all for this week. I'm off for a quick 13 minute nap. That's the golden number apparently for efficient napping. I'll let you know how it goes.   Goodbye for now, old friend.     Producer: Dan Atkinson Line Producer: Daisy Knight Exec Producer: James Taylor Composer: Fat Lady Music Learn more about your ad choices. Errol was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010 and since then has dedicated himselt to informing & supporting men especially those in the black community about prostate cancer and, in particular, the importance of getting screened. He's been highly recognised for his services. Errol is one of Prostate Cancer UK's main ambassadors and, along with Linford Christie, David Haye, Danny John-Jules, Viv Anderson, Chuka Umunna and Benjamin Zephaniah is fronting their Stronger Knowing More campaign, which encourages black men to get PSA tests. Kergejõustikuteemalises taskuhäälingusaates "Staadionijutud" on sel nädalal külalise rollis Eesti läbi aegade kiireim jooksja Marek Niit, kes teeb vahepealsetest mõõnadest hoolimata sporti siiani täie tõsidusega. "Kevadel, enne koroonaviirusest tingitud kriisi, tundsin end väga hästi. Olin 400 meetris Eesti rekordi vormis, kuigi see on nüüd spekulatsioon. Tundsin end nooremana. "Sprint on väga nauditav ala. Usain on sündinud sprinteriks. Saate viimases osas esitame taas kergejõustikusõpradele küsimuse, mille vastuseid ootame aadressile ekjl@ekjl.ee. Saadet juhib Karl Rinaldo.

“The runaways are the silent heroes who created opportunities for future generations of people of colour, and it is important that their existence is acknowledged and celebrated.”- Morayo AkandéActor and screenwriter of 1745Running. A free sport. An activity where you can lace up and run, not matter what the time, the season or the weather. For those of us who grew up watching the world's fastest men and women taking part in 100 and 200m sprints, on the edge of our seats, wondering incredulously how Carl Lewis, Florence Griffiths Joyner (“Flo Jo”), Colin Jackson, Linford Christie, Michael Johnson, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah and Eliud Kipchoge ran the incredible times that they did.Athletes like have these have inspired thousands of youngsters to themselves become the athletes of the future, some kids starting out just running races on the block, hoping to emulate their heroes. But does running, that feeling of being free, of running away the troubles and doubts, have a deeper resonance for people of colour? And if it does, is this as a result of the invisible thread, from the millions of runaway slaves, stretching over the 400 year period since a ship first docked in the shores of America, starting the transatlantic slave trade, to our lives now? Whatever the tenuousness of that link, one thing is for sure: without the bravery of the many men, women and children who escaped the brutal institutionalised evil of slavery and who as free people, worked tirelessly for its abolition, we as people of colour would not be living the lives we do today. In this bonus episode for Black History Month, we celebrate them, we commemorate them and we reflect on what it means today to Run Free! Special thanks to Simone S-B, @thisistrojan, @arayahfaithkids, @iamjackiornwilliams and @blackgirlsdorunuk for your messages - we are so grateful for your insights on what running free means to each of you!And we have to mention Rick Holmes “Remember To Remember” - check it out - Black History captured in one song! It is hard to think of a more famous 9.84 seconds in Canadian sports. It took a lifetime of confident concentration to bring sprinter Donovan Bailey to the line for the race that made him king of the world. This week, host Anastasia Bucsis explores self-assurance with Bailey. Without that confidence, track history could very well have been different. Bucsis and Bailey zero in on one race to talk it through, because the thing we may forget, looking back at his triumphant 100 metres in the 1996 Olympics, was just how agonising the race was for competitors. It took an eternity to get underway. False start followed false start. The disqualified Linford Christie even refused to clear the blocks for a while. But through it all, Bailey kept his composure and his certainty of victory. He gives full credit for that confidence to his parents. Which is not to say they were stroking his ego. On the contrary, when Bailey was breaking world records, his folks often didn't even choose to attend, and both loving parents maintained a cool attitude about their son's growing fame and accomplishments.

At half-time in Thurles yesterday, it looked like Tipperary's hurling world was falling in around them. Nine points down, at home to Cork, and with the criticism of the previous week's defeat to Limerick still ringing in their ears they somehow managed to resurrect their season, coming back to draw a thriller. Michael Duignan and Malachy Clerkin were there, and join us to talk about that, Waterford's horror opener, and Murph reports from Pearse Stadium as Galway's physicality and superior skill finally wore down Kilkenny. The big story in the football championship was Carlow's brilliant win over Kildare, and we speak to their manager and Svengali, Turlough O'Brien about why this is important for Carlow's self-image as a county, beyond sport. Plus there's Ed Sheeran, Linford Christie, the death notices on Shannonside FM, and Sean Óg de Paor.

George hates foot chases. Aside from the obvious that it knackers you out if it goes on for more than five minutes, you also have to contend with street furniture, mums with buggies, jeering youths and cars that absolutely and categorically will not stop to let you pass. The bad guys are normally half George's age, light on their feet and wearing Nike air trainers whereas he's wearing a stab vest, belt kit and running in size 10 steel toecap army boots. He only has a dozen years left in the job, so tripping over a bollard and smashing his pelvis on a kerbstone is not high on his agenda. He's seen it happen and you can take his word it isn't pretty or funny, especially if it's one of your colleagues. For this reason one of the first things he asks any new probationer is "what are you like at running?" Most eager ones tell him they are trained to an Olympian standard. That's that sorted then, they chase on foot and George'll back them up in the car. Well that's the plan at least but it never quite works out that way.The other day George and a probationer were taking a statement from a shop owner when the CCTV Control Room called up to say they had a wanted person on camera, not far from otheir location. Various units called up, two PCSO's had eyeball on him but were holding off and an unmarked unit were coming in from the top end of town. George looked at his probationer who was in the middle of his statement and told him it was okay, other units were nearby they'd get him. Best finish the statement.A few minutes later CCTV called up again, the suspect was moving off on his bicycle. The PCSO's were told to hang back for health and safety reasons and the unmarked unit still some minutes away. There was no one else nearer so George told his probationer that they would try to sneak up on the suspect as this lad had warning markers for escaping. As soon as they got to the door of the shop they spotted him - and he spotted them. In fact he was staring right at them. A second's pause and George shouted "Right, get 'im!" The probationer launched himself out of the shop, the bad guy started to make off on his bike, the lad made it to the road and was gaining momentum fast. The probbie stepped up a gear and chased the suspect on his bike up a busy main road, car drivers stopped in awe and passers-by just stared. Why does that never happen for George? He was like a gazelle and was catching up with the cyclist fast; George on the other hand was way behind calling for back up in between gasping for breath. The lad seemed to be getting away when all of a sudden two plain clothes officers jumped on him, or rather he cycled into their arms. The probationer was on him in seconds, slapping handcuffs onto the protesting teenager before George caught up, clearly worse for wear and puffing like a steam engine. After a few minutes recovery he asked his probationer what he had arrested him for, other than making a police officer run."What me? I haven't arrested him for anything yet" was the answer."Best nick him for something then" was George's reply and eventually the words were said once they'd remembered what offence the lad was wanted for. After the foot pursuit up a busy main road, members of the public took their time to take the mickey out of George once the bad guy was driven away by another unit. He thanked everyone for their kind comments, given that he hadn't even warmed up he thought he had done rather well and besides he was extremely proud of his probationer at that point. That was his third arrest in the one day.  His probationer later received an email from the controller stating she was impressed; George on the other hand, got a message of commiserations.'Right Click' and 'Save as' to download the audio version
