Oops...there are a couple of swear words in this episode! Nothing crazy or vulgar...in fact the couple swear words are kind of cute, but wanted to give you a heads up. TW: sexual assault and rape are briefly mentioned in this episode. Nothing specific or detailed is discussed, but if you are not in a place at this time to hear those terms, you may want to come back another time. This conversation is everything! Post traumatic growth and growing through adversity are the cornerstones of what Ginny's speaking, writing, podcast and coaching is all about. Lisa's experience and expertise is coupled with her compassionate and wonderful demeanor for a supportive and meaningful conversation on how people that have faced trauma and adversity can find the light at the end of the tunnel. The passion and connection in the conversation comes through. Normalization and validation are common themes throughout as well as noting that the pain & suffering can co-exist with the growing. This episode is powerful! Lisa is a recognized expert in the strengths-based, de-pathologized treatment of trauma and has been in private practice for over 39 years. She presents workshops and keynote addresses nationally and internationally, and is a clinical consultant to practitioners and mental health agencies in the United States, Canada, the UK and Ireland. Welcome back to TherapyChat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C speaks out about a major issue affecting those who use online mental health platforms like BetterHelp and others, and how this breach of public trust is likely to impact trauma survivors and anyone who has been abused or marginalized particularly deeply. Laura reminds listeners that we all have a voice, even when learning about abuse, as horrifying as it is, we are not powerless. In this episode Laura goes through the press release, pointing out important parts and offers some suggestions of what those affected can do.    Laura Reagan, LCSW-C, a trauma therapist located in Maryland, United States, who hosts Therapy Chat Podcast, shares important information that consumers who have used BetterHelp and other online mental health platforms need to know. Laura reviews the press release and explains what consumers can do, including commenting on the Federal Register post when it is made; claiming a portion of the projected $7.8 Million fine which the Federal Trade Commission proposes to impose on the corporation to punish them for their dishonest practices, according to the press release. Laura advocates for consumers to speak with their BetterHelp therapists, consider contacting attorneys regarding what legal rights they may have to hold BetterHelp accountable for these unethical actions alleged in the press release.   Laura's offering a FREE community call for therapists who working with BetterHelp to hold space for grief, anger, and action. If you look at the research, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men by the time they're 18 have experienced some form of sexual trauma. We know millions of people walk around having lived in families where there perhaps was addiction or mental illness,   physical violence, witnessing domestic violence, neglect. Unfortunately, it touches millions of people.6:52: Anything that is subjectively experienced as threatening; anything that subjectively leaves you feeling like your privacy, your boundaries, your body in some way are being violated; anything that feels to you subjectively like a profound a breach of trust, that's in part how we would define what traumatizes a person.8:12: It's very common for people to not connect the dots between past experiences and the current symptoms or struggles that have manifested for them.9:01: Unfortunately, there are many many ways that people can creatively self-medicate.Dear Mind, You Matter is brought to you by NOBU, a new mental health, and wellness app. To download NOBU, visit the app store or Google Play. This podcast is hosted by Allison Walsh  and Dr. Angela Phillips. We kick off the episode with Sherry’s secret behind that Fountain of Youth looking glow. Then, we are joined by Lisa Ferentz, clinical social worker, author, and psychotherapist who has been in private practice for over 30 years. Lisa is an expert on helping people transcend trauma and toxic relationships to find their self-worth and inner sense of power. We talk with Lisa more about how to recognize a narcissist, why victims of abuse are not cowardly or weak, and why codependent people tend to rush into one destructive relationship after another. Lisa also provides some of her great resources for realizing the power you hold within yourself and letting go of self-destructive behaviors.   What You’ll Hear In This Episode:   A Love Fix Question about “dating yourself”! Why codependency and self-destructive relationships go together, and what keeps someone in the cycle of self-sabotage. Lisa’s workbooks and resources that help foster positive self talk, self compassion, and positive self care. The more independent we become, the more we focus inward and rely less on trying to focus outward and change others.  It takes a lot of courage for someone to leave an abusive or codependent relationship. Abusers tend to make their victims feel isolated and dependent, which further takes away their ability to find the resources needed to break away. Why codependent people have to really work at not getting into another relationship right away. How trauma can affect us differently based on the meaning and power we choose to give it. A glimpse into the brain of a true narcissist, and a surprising fact about just how many people in our society have narcissistic tendencies! How attachment, connection, and empathy for a narcissist just may not be possible, and if this is a result of nature, nurture, or both. Oftentimes, a codependent and narcissist will find each other and have a relationship that feels like a coexistence rather than a true intimacy. Men can be victims as well. It takes a tremendous amount of courage and support to be able to step away from a toxic or abusive relationship.   Tweetables:   “When you are in a codependent relationship, there is a real loss of a sense of self.” - Lisa “There is a reason why Bumble banned men taking mirror selfies on their app.” - Lisa “When you are in an abusive relationship, you are alone” - Lisa   Connect with Us!      The Love Fix | @thelovefixpodcast Wake up Recovery for Codependency, Love Addiction, and Toxic Relationships — $1 trial membership    The Love Fix Relationship Quiz      Get professional online counseling with BetterHelp by clicking here.  Thanks to BetterHelp for sponsoring this episode.    Sherry Website | Instagram | Facebook | Love Smacked | Wake Up Recovery for Codependents    Carla Website | Instagram | Facebook | Contagious Love | Online Dating Bootcamp    Lisa Ferentz Finding Your Ruby Slippers | The Ferentz Institute | Letting Go Of Self Destructive Behaviors     Find Out More:  Co-Dependents Anonymous  Al-Anon

Early in her practice, Lisa realized how important it is to approach her work from the viewpoint of being a good student and learning from your clients. In the exciting world of therapy today, incredible connections are being made between trauma and the impact on the brain. Lisa advises that clinicians be more aware and mindful in working with the body in trauma work. Lisa explains “dual awareness,” meaning being aware of what’s happening in both the client’s and clinician’s body during therapy. Lisa explains the “vasovagal zone” of the body and tracking sensations in the area that houses 80% of emotions. Trauma is stored visually and viscerally, and can present with actual physical pain, such as: Limb pain Fibromyalgia Chronic migraines Stomach/GI upset Fatigue  One technique is to start with the body and work your way into words to deal with trauma. Movement and expressive arts can also be used in trauma therapy. Simplistic art therapy strategies can open the door to visually-based modality when a client is unable to communicate with words. Lisa uses drawing, collaging, and sand tray art so a client can SHOW their narrative, share a memory, or process an emotion. Clinicians have to refrain from interpreting the client’s art for themselves. Lisa explains the stigma associated with borderline personality disorder as opposed to  identifying the same client as a “trauma survivor.” Lisa introduces her books: Treating Self-Destructive Behavior in Trauma Survivors: A Clinician’s Guide and Letting Go of Self-Destructive Behaviors: A Workbook of Hope and Healing. One is for clinicians and one is for laypeople. In treating trauma survivors, you have to give them new tools to replace self-destructive behavior—other ways to self-soothe and regulate their pain. Lisa explains why she doesn’t like standard safety contracts because they introduce a power struggle between client and therapist. “The goal is that trauma therapy doesn’t re-traumatize.” Lisa gives details about her Institute in Baltimore, in its 9th year of offering certification programs in Advanced Trauma Treatment, working with expressive modalities and traditional talk therapy. The Institute offers ethics training, from which 700 clinicians have already graduated. Her website includes a calendar of CEU training and the details about the Trauma Certificate Levels 1 & 2. We continue this month revisiting some of my favorite interviews. Today we listen to the incredible Lisa Ferentz, LCSW. Lisa is one of those individuals who has the admirable combination of empathy, humor, and compassion together with the skill of a master therapist. (I loved talking with Lisa so much, and respect so much the way she works that I invited her to share her passion on Trauma Therapist | 2.0. You can check out Lisa’s video here.) The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

Lisa Ferentz is back on the podcast, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Lisa is the quintessential therapist, in my mind: she’s passionate, compassionate, super insightful, and a nationally recognized expert in the treatment of trauma with over 33 years in the field. In 2009 she was voted the “Social Worker of Year” by the Maryland Society for Clinical Social Work. You’ll recall that Lisa initially joined me on episode 54 of the podcast, and then graced my membership site, Trauma Therapist | 2.0, with an amazing video interview on self-harming behaviors. You can check out a snippet of that video here. Lisa is an adjunct Faculty member at several Universities and is the Founder of The Ferentz Institute, now in its tenth year of providing continuing education to mental health professionals. Lisa is the author of Treating Self-Destructive Behaviors in Trauma Survivors: A Clinician’s Guide, now in its second edition, and Letting Go of Self-Destructive Behaviors: A Workbook of Hope and Healing. Today, we talk about her new book, Finding Your Ruby Slippers: Transformative Life Lessons from the Therapist's Couch, what inspired her to write it, why it’s a go-to resource for therapists and clients, alike, and the story behind the title.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
