Spend too much time on the internet these days and you can walk away with a lingering sense of body shame, dietary uncertainty, and overall not-great-vibes. To me, this means it's all the more important to reflect on our relationships with food and re-assess how we think about them.  My guest today, Shana Spence, is one of the central people that I take a lot of inspiration from when it comes to healing relationships with food. Shana is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist based in Brooklyn, New York. Her debut book came out this past August 2024, titled Live Nourished: Make Peace with Food, Banish Body Shame, and Reclaim Joy. She currently works in public health for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, doing community nutrition lessons, and also owns her own company, The Nutrition Tea ®. She describes herself as an "all foods fit" dietitian and creates a platform for open discussion on nutrition and wellness topics that are inclusive, non-diet, and weight-neutral, all with an intersectionality of social justice.  Today, Shana joins me to discuss some of the key themes and crafting of Live Nourished, touching on how diet culture persists in post-secondary educational spheres, the funny but persistent and weird ways that wellness permeates our eating choices, and how to break away from the idea of food as a moral choice, to think about nourishment in a more individual and cultural way. I absolutely love Hally! I am so excited to introduce her to you.  Hally Brooke is the Founder and CEO of Live Nourished. She's a Certified Functional Medicine Nutritional Counselor and Nationally Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, and a Fox 21 Fitness & Nutrition Expert! She is so incredibly knowledgeable and just an amazing coach empowering people to transform and achieve their health and wellness goals.  Her discussion on gut health and hormone balance is so insightful, yet so simple! She talks about the 5R process: 1. Remove (remove inflammatory foods that may be bothering you, such as gluten, dairy, GMO soy, processed foods, and refined sugar) 2. Repair (our gut is only one cell thick and she talks about getting that barrier healed to decrease inflammation in the body) 3. Rebalance/Reinoculate (prebiotics and probiotics are our friend here! and we even get into the most common cause of heartburn and it's not high acid in the stomach!) 4. Reintroduce (after 30-120 days of healing the gut, it's time to start reintroducing the foods now that the gut is healed) Hally also knows about the stress-gut connection and how important the gut is for brain health! Hormone Balance: She talks about her 3-step method for us women to get our hormones back into balance. 1. Remove (remove endocrine disruptors, like phthalates in perfumes and candles and skincare products) 2. Reduce cortisol response (high stress levels cause our hormone production to slow down because it's diverted to our stress hormone: cortisol) 3. Correct nutritional imbalances (so many of us are nutritionally insufficient even when we eat super well!!!) After being diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) in February 2018 she dove headfirst into nutrition (and it quickly became a passion of hers). She later found out in October 2021 that she was misdiagnosed with PCOS and she actually had Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (which is when your body is under lots of stress and you lose your period).
