This bonus episode comes to us from Lori Davis and her excellent podcast Her Half of History. Brand new episode of The Wild West Extravaganza still scheduled for Wednesday but I thought I'd go ahead and share this as well. Enjoy! This woman is a superhero. She escaped herself and then put herself in danger many times to help others do the same. During the Civil War, she served as a nurse and educator and spy and commanded a charge of armed men. All without any formal education herself. After the war she continued to find so many ways to help her fellow human beings that if she were anybody else, that would be the story. As it is, it all feels like an afterthought to her underground railroad and civil war work. My major source for today was Kate Clifford Larson's biography Bound for the Promised Land. The first biography of Tubman was written in 1869 by Sarah Bradford, Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman.    Her Half of History - https://herhalfofhistory.com/   Bound for the Promised Land by Kate Clifford Larson - https://www.amazon.com/Bound-Promised-Land-Portrait-American/dp/0345456289   Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman by Sarah Bradford - https://web.archive.org/web/20161216040502/http:/docsouth.unc.edu/neh/bradford/bradford.html   The Library of Congress has an article about spirituals and their history: https://www.loc.gov/item/ihas.200197495/   The Charleston Mercury's account of the Combahee River raid: https://web.archive.org/web/20111004194604/http://www.cw-chronicles.com/blog/the-enemy%e2%80%99s-raid-on-the-banks-of-the-combahee/

The history of slavery in New England is not well known, but did exist. And while the colonies were rebelling against England and wanting "their" freedom, many New England households had enslaved peoples. In one such household, in western part of the Massachusetts colony,  there lived Elizabeth Freeman as a slave.  She had already been enslaved in that household there for many years, and as with the unrest and coming rebellion against England, the men in her town - drafted their own "freedom declaration'', which Elizabeth overheard the content.  She rightly decides - I also have a right to my freedom. You will hear her amazing story, from Lori Davis, who had done much research on Freeman. Lori describes her quest for freedom, through legal means, and the amazing result of getting her freedom. In August, 2021, a group of young Afghan women journalists, musicians and activists fled their country in fear for their lives when the Taliban took over their nation. These women are navigating life today in the US. Many of these women were well known in their country as TV personalities, women wearing western clothing, their hair uncovered, who interviewed women and men on the popular morning news shows. “My background in the TV was one of biggest reasons for them to kill me,” says Taban Ibraz. “To do anything they want to do with me like they did with a lot of women in Afghanistan. They were targeting us.” Maryam Yousifi, journalist and clothing designer remembers, “I saw that my mother's crying. And she's saying that we have to hide you somewhere. We can't keep you here because people knows our address. She gave me a hijab and she said, please wear this. She never told me that never, ever. She never told me that what should I wear.” The women were assisted by the nonprofit, Restore Her Voice, set up to help Afghan women, who had been in media or the arts, get out of Afghanistan and to help support them once they arrived in the United States. Joyce Stahl: 20 Years of Enchantment

Halloween Art and Travel

Episode 3 is a special 20th anniversary celebration. My guest is artist Joyce Stahl, of Enchanted Productions. Joyce’s whimsical dolls are the stitching together of her experiences in theater costuming, 80s hair, teaching, painting, illustration, and a love for Halloween. Joyce will share with us a retrospective of her art journey so far, including two of her mentors who are invaluable to what Enchanted Productions is today.  Joyce’s work has been exhibited at Roger’s Gardens, Ghoultide Gathering, and Bewitching Peddlers of Halloween.  You may have seen her doll, Mary Venom the Widow Queen in the Fall 2018 issue of Art Doll Quarterly. In addition to her role as an artist, Joyce is a wife, mother, and Ohioan. Joyce was creative from her beginning. Even from the age of 3, she was drawing all the time. She knew she wanted to be an artist. She learned to sew in home economics class. She still isn’t good at functional sewing (like hemming pants) - her love is in creative sewing. As a student, she worked as costume assistant with a local theater group. That is where she honed her sewing and discovered a passion for period clothing. She was the go-to friend for bang trims in high school. After graduation, she went to beauty school. She spent the 1980s creating big hair styles and inhaling a lot of Aqua Net. She loved helping people achieve their desired styles. She left the salon to stay-at-home with her son. When he was 3, she started working at a frame shop/art gallery. It was time to get serious about her art career. She worked at the shop by day, and learned art at night, mostly though books. At the shop, she met artist Nancy McDonald, who mentored and encouraged her. Recently Nancy invited Joyce to participate in a studio show. As time went on, she got into sign work. She progressed into murals so large she needed to use scaffolding. In 1998 she started doing local art shows. She decided it was time for a studio name, which was the birth of Enchanted Productions. The name was inspired by Stevie Nick’s “Enchanted” CD set. In the beginning Enchanted Productions was paintings, many of them wildlife. They were infused with magic, moon, and stars. She wasn’t aware of the world of Halloween art yet. She also did illustration and design part-time.  She created her own primitive print line. One of the shops that carried her work was the Village Gift Shoppe. The Shoppe is where she met owner Lori Davis. Joyce had been experimenting with clay and made a Ghost of Jacob Marley (from “A Christmas Carol”) doll.   During a trip in 2006 to restock prints, she showed the doll to Lori. Lori told her she needed to sell it on eBay. Lori was tapped into the art doll world. Lori showed Joyce the work of Scott Smith, Sheila Bentley, and some other doll artists. Joyce was blown away. Jacob sold quickly, and Lori told Joyce she needed to make more dolls. Lori became her assistant and best friend. Joyce found doll work thrilling and created a doll a week the first year. In the beginning, Joyce created for all the holidays. After 2 years, she narrowed it down to Halloween because she had too many Halloween characters she wanted to create. Around this time, she developed her signature eye-style. She knew she was on the right path when her husband called one of her dolls “creepy.” Joyce doesn’t own any of her dolls. Some of her favorites were Edgar Allen Poe, Cobbie the Cornfield Creeper, and Winston the Werewolf. She created a whole family, The Ravenson Family, in the feel of the Addams Family.   Joyce loves to put a Halloween filter over pop culture. She’s done a Staying Alive skeleton and an agent inspired by Get Smart. She loves history. Her favorite periods are the 1960s and 1970s. Lori and Joyce loved attending the Halloween art show, Ghoultide Gathering, as collectors.  She leaves Halloween art up all year. Her ravens get tinsel decorations for Christmas.  After 2 years of creating her dolls, Joyce was invited to participate in Ghoultide. She was over the moon with joy. Tragically, Lori passed away from cancer 4 years ago. Joyce still hears her voice guiding and encouraging her. Joyce always includes Lori’s witch hat in her show booth. You’ll easily find it in pictures from this year’s Bewitching Peddlers of Halloween. Every job Joyce has done comes together in her dolls. As she looks ahead, she plans to do more 2D painting and create a book of poems about her characters. She also wants to revisit some of her early characters in her current style. If you are interested in Joyce’s work, follow her on Instagram (@joycestahl1031) and/or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/EnchantedProductions/). Joyce sends enchanted blessings to all! Recently, we sat down with Lori Davis from Xavier School to discuss her school’s experience watching the Smart Social Digital Citizenship Speech Videos. Instead of having Josh as a guest speaker, their school opted to get one of our off-the-shelf video modules to screen to their students. In this episode, Lori describes how the videos helped her educate students on how they can make their online presence the number one ticket to getting into their preferred university. Key Takeaways: Digital natives are living with the consequences of their digital footprint. So, it’s important for them to receive guidance Through the Digital Citizenship Speech Videos, students learn that sending a positive message online and on social media will get you further than being negative or remaining anonymous One of the key things that students learned from watching the Digital Citizenship Speech Videos is to volunteer their phones when pictures are being taken, so that they can better control their digital footprint A great key takeaway for students using social media to shine online is to use the same picture on all social accounts What value did the Digital Citizenship Speech Videos provide for your school? Every year we have a summit on human dignity. We pick a topic every year and this year’s theme was technology and social media, that’s how I found you. We bought the program and I showed it in the gym. Our school had a giant screen and we think your videos were effective. What was the student’s reaction after watching our Digital Citizenship Speech Videos? It went great. I walked in with a red solo cup in my hand and I asked them straight away, “do you know what connotation this cup has?” Of course, the students laughed and they were all able to say red solo cups symbolize alcoholic drinks. I told them a little story about how one year I decided to bring my breakfast of overnight oatmeal in a red solo cup. The first day I walked in I had to walk through parents and students coming into school. I thought to myself, “is this weird that I have a red solo cup at 8:00 in the morning?” I’m telling them the story and that’s how we started off our discussion. We went into the four videos and in-between each video I showed a couple of slides with ideas from your book, I thought it would be helpful to our students. What were the biggest lessons your students learned? At the end of each day when our students went back to their first-period class, there was a series of reflections that they did. There were certain key things that stood out to them and I think one of them is so simple which is volunteering their phones when pictures are taken. That was a lightbulb moment for some of the kids. I can control my image that way and not be at the mercy of whoever’s clicking away and posting. At the very end, I had the students Google themselves and they were very interested in sharing what they found with me. It was a wide variety. We discussed security controls and talked about not being so anonymous online so that a school or an employer won’t be able to find you. I think that was a key thing for the older grades because they think they’re being sneaky or hiding everything. What do your students think about the “getting fired” segment? I think it resonated with the seniors the most because they’re closest to that. Even though it’s about an employer it still sends the message that positivity is going to get you further. What would you say to educators who have yet to take part of our digital safety curriculum? My school is unique in that we devoted a whole week to technology and social media. We had your program and a district attorney come and talk about the criminal aspects of social media. I was very excited that they allowed me to present your program to the whole school by grade level. I don’t know how much we would have even covered if we didn’t devote a whole week to social media safety. I think it’s kind of scary how you can get fired with one tweet. Digital natives are living with the consequences of their digital footprint. So, it’s important for them to receive guidance. How can educators keep the digital safety conversation going? I was approached by one of the technology teachers, she sat in and watched one of the Digital Citizenship Speech Videos. She was on board with your message; I’m going to be giving her your book. I’ve discussed quite a few things in my classroom and have taken a deep dive into your presentation. I don’t know exactly where we’re going to take this yet but I think it definitely brought it to the forefront of everybody’s mind. I’ll be working with the technology teacher a little bit and just see what the next steps are. What is one quick tip from the Digital Citizenship Speech Videos that you can share with students? I think one key piece of advice you give is to use the same picture on all of your social profiles so colleges and employers can quickly identify you online. Having a bunch of different headshots across your social media profiles creates confusion and suspicion.
