Zeal & Ardor leader Manuel Gagneux zoomed in to talk about their new album "Greif" as well as their upcoming tour coming to the Observatory on Saturday, December 14, 2024. Here's what we talked about: new album "Greif" (0-4) 12/14/24 at the Observatory OC (4-8) Mastodon/Opeth tour 2022 (8-10) NIN Debate (10-13) Mandatory Metallica (13-end)
Interview by Kris PetersTo steal a line from their bio, "ZEAL & ARDOR isn't just a band; it's a living and breathing entity."Since announcing their arrival with 2017's album Devil Is Fine, Zeal & Ardor have transgressed almost every musical parameter known to man, exploring sonic realms through their music that have no right being disturbed, yet somehow always combine through a submissive force of nature that is both compelling and irresistible.Founding member and main man Manuel Gagneux has long been the heart, soul and public face of this musical enigma, writing and recording everything himself in pursuit of total creative freedom and balance. It is a process which has worked beautifully over three previous albums, but for the band's fourth, Grief, which was released last Friday, Gagneux elected to change things up considerably by inviting his band - for seven years only used as touring musicians - into the studio to help start and complete the project. It was a brave move, but one which has yielded impressive dividends, with added vocal layers and differing thought patterns contributing to yet another musical evolution within Zeal & Ardor.HEAVY sat down with Gagneux earlier today to talk about Grief. We start by asking how the early reception has been for album number four."It's been pretty much what I expected," he smiled, "because it's not as… I wanna say heavy as the other records. So some people are butt hurt and other people are really into it (laughs). It's a good mix."With so much going on from so many different levels on Grief, we ask Gagneux how he would describe the album musically."Oh damn," he pondered. "I think it's just a collection of songs that I was really into. It's kind of like tapas where you have different small dishes; you can have a little bit of that and a little bit of this. It's the opposite of a concept album, I guess. There's a concept to it, but you're not gonna get Tool hours of nerding over it because there's a meaning between every single song. They're just songs, and I like them (laughs)."In the full interview Manuel discusses the musical side of Grief in more detail, how he has expanded on previous music, the continual musical evolution of Zeal & Ardor and how much growth is left in the band, the track Clawing Out and the story behind it, having his band in the studio with him and why now is the right time, relinquishing total creative control and if that was an issue, his creative side and where it comes from, having three different vocal layers on the album, self-producing your music and more.In a new interview segment, we also show Manuel some photos we dug up and asked him to explain them.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Zeal & Ardor leader Manuel Gagneux joined the MetalSucks Podcast this week, We are in for an awesome treat on August 23 when Zeal & Ardor's latest album GREIF is released, so we decided to start our chat with Manuel by discussing the ceremony that influenced the album, if everyone is making the mistake of calling the album "Grief", and if this is the most vulnerable record he's written. We also talk about the different approach taken on the cover art, why he's not been hit with writer's block throughout his career, and the true story of how Zeal & Ardor were honored with the coveted national Swiss Music Award. Petar and Brandon discuss the return of Blake Judd and Nacthmystium, his statement that he is making with the release of the new single Predator Phoenix, leaning into a controversial album title and press release statement, and if fans will accept his firebrand approach considering the apology tour most feel the are owed for supporting him in the past.
My guest on the podcast this week is Manuel Gagneux, mastermind behind Swiss avant-garde black metal band Zeal & Ardor. Z+A mix the style of European Black Metal (a genre notorious for it's link with racism) and elements of African-American Spirituals and Gospel and lyrically poses the question: What if the freed slaves had embraced Satan? We talked about the band's unlikely beginnings on the darkest parts of the internet, black magick, reappropriating Richard Wagner and as ever: Manuel's dream festival.
Manuel Gagneux is the mastermind behind the awesomeness that is Zeal & Ardor. They are coming to The Crocodile in September, so I chatted with him about his inspirations, the idea behind the band, recording their newest album and much more

Manuel Gagneux of Zeal & Ardor & I have a conversation about how he coped with 2020/2021, his 1st beers, the soundtrack of his youth, his 1st shows, the new Zeal & Ardor album, how he has been filling the void, a Zeal & Ardor Brew & his hangover cure. Throughout this conversation, Manuel enjoyed a glass of Henri Badoux's "Aigle les Murailles" Red Wine while I enjoyed Birra Bar à Bières Maison 's "Dupond" the 7% Belgian Dubbel. It poured out with a gorgeous nut brown veil, smashed candied fruits on the nose & ripped a sweet caramel finish. This is a Heavy Montreal presents Vox&Hops episode!
Our own BSG sits down to chat with Manny G from Z&A. That's right, Zeal and Ardor has finally made it to the big leagues. Ben Serna-Grey chats over Zoom with Manuel Gagneux of Zeal and Ardor. They cover everything from what he's been listening to lately and dream musical collaborators to his songwriting process, and how to deal with creative burnout and making music for a living. Then Manuel flips the table on BSG and interviews him about his creative endeavors in fiction writing and music. Enjoy this götterdämmerung good interview flushers.
And the big releases keep coming! Merl and Steve sift through some absolute bangers this week as we discuss whether the new Zeal & Ardor album has brought Manuel Gagneux's vision to new heights, whether Cult Of Luna's The Long Road North is up to their usual impeccable standards, how Amorphis have proved they're folk metal's most reliable band with Halo and why Bloodywood may have just dropped the funnest album of 2022.Buy the latest issue of Metal Hammer at bit.ly/buyhammer
Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators 4, Zeal & Ardor ZEAL & ARDOR, Annihilator METAL II, Nightrage ABYSS RISING und Star One REVEL IN TIME.

Starting out life as a solo project for Swiss avante-garde musician Manuel Gagneux, Zeal & Ardor's rapid rise over the years has seen the one man project blossom into a fully fledged band, although still ably led by Gangneux. The band is on the precipice of releasing their third and self titled album On February 11, with Zeal & Ardor finally looking set to become a household name. While their music has always had its niche fan base due to its eclectic yet brilliant nature, Zeal & Ardor looks set to catapult the band into the mainstream of music, despite still being full of eccentricities and music that is far from accessible on a wider spectrum.Gagneux joined HEAVY to talk about the upcoming album and the rise and rise of a band that was never meant to be anything more than a solo vehicle for its main protagonist."We just wanted to continue our atmospheric thing that we had going on,” he began, “but still have enough leeway to try new avenues. I think it's our most aggressive album yet, but it still has our vibe if that makes any sense."Being Zeal & Ardor's third album, the next logical question is why Gagneux felt now was the right time to name an album after the band."One aspect of it was we had loads of time to work on stuff the last two years because something happened, obviously,” he laughed. “We kind of got to reflect on what it is that makes us sound like us and we cut a lot of fat. Once we figured that out, we could explore other avenues. The other thing is perhaps maybe, a little bit, we couldn't come up with a better title (laughs).”In the full interview, Manuel talks about how important this album is in the overall scheme of the band and its music, the singles released so far and how they reflect on the album as a whole, writing and performing all of the music himself, mixing German and English lyrics together on parts of the album and the significance of doing so, expanding into a full band from a solo project and the reasons why, the universal appeal of Zeal & Ardor and why he thinks the band resonates on so many levels, future plans and more.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Zeal & Ardor over Zoom video! Zeal & Ardor's widely praised second album, Stranger Fruit, was released by MVKA in 2018, following the global attention-getting, multi-million streamed debut Devil Is Fine. Critically acclaimed across the industry, The Guardian newspaper described Stranger Fruit as "extraordinary and brilliant" upon release. Upset wrote it was "a compelling listen," Metal Hammer applauded its "sheer musical brilliance," with Rock Sound concluding, it was "one of the most uniquely daring and wholly affecting albums of 2018 so far," plus further plaudits rolling in from SiriusXM, Rolling Stone, Kerrang!, Noisey, Alternative Press, Revolver, Pitchfork, Stereogum, and more. By Christmas 2018, the UK's largest free newspaper Metro declared Stranger Fruit their #2 Album of the Year in a cross-genre list, declaring "in this jaw-dropping meld of black American folk music and black metal, the Swiss artist Manuel Gagneux has hit upon something genuinely original." In March 2019, following a blistering set in London the previous December, the band went on to release the double live album Live In London. Then, in October 2020, amidst a provocative and stimulating 18-month profound period of reflection — that led to the writing of the forthcoming self-titled album — the band quietly shared the striking, standalone 6-track EP Wake Of A Nation. Their intense third album, crystalizing everything the band is, will be released in February 2022. We want to hear from you! The black metal, blues, and African American fusion of Zeal & Ardor's music is the brainchild of musician Manuel Gagneux. He moved from his native Switzerland to New York, and took up the moniker Zeal & Ardor, having previously released music under the name Bird mask. After a tumultuous start to the year 2020, Gagneux could not hold his tongue and released the crushing EP titled 'Wake of a Nation'. This EP and episode are the results of atrocities that were committed earlier in the year 2020. Please consider donating to https://www.joincampaignzero.org/ or your charity of choice.

Swiss musician Manuel Gagneux is the lead singer, guitarist, and mind behind the new rising band Zeal & Ardor, where he combines elements of black metal, electronic, and traditional black American music. Manuel talks with Looker and Lamar about the problem with calling artists "problematic", Negro spirituals, and his personal relationship with Satanism.
This episode is with Manuel from Zeal & Ardor, an awesome band that fuses black metal with rootsy Spirituals that started as a one man projects and now is a full touring band.We discuss the upcoming album 'Stranger Fruit' which is due out June 8th. We get into its references to esoteric topics such as Goetia, Abramelin the Mage, the syncretic religion of the Yoruba, The Tarot and more.Listen to the album when its released and check out the singles that are already out there from it like Gravediggers Chant etc. Its a great work and it was cool to sit with Manuel who was happy for me to pick through the references amongst the lyrics and track titles.Find the band on their socials which are:www.twitter.com/zealandardorwww.instagram.com/zealandardorDaniel can be found here:www.twitter.com/danielpcarterwww.instagram.com/danielpcarterAnd please rate and review the podcast in iTunes or whichever podcatcher you favour.Thank you. "It's kind of an expansion of the first album that probably nobody ever heard about or listened to," offered Manuel Gagneux, driving force behind the enigma that is Zeal & Ardor ahead of the release of his second album, Stranger Fruit. "I'm pretty fucken proud of it and I hope you enjoy it too."No stranger to controversy over his thought-provoking and brutally honest lyrics, Gagneux refuses to apologize for his content, evoking an emotion through his music that almost dares you to ignore his message."It's hard to convey how I create that emotion," he measured, "because in a conversation like this it splits into a jovial conversation but I can't really get into what I felt like making the album now because that would ruin the whole vibe of this chat..."In a refreshingly honest and uncensored chat, Manuel discusses the intricacies of the album and the meaning behind the title and artwork, as well as just what his objectives are with Zeal & Ardor. He talks about his beliefs on censorship versus honesty and also has an interesting tale to tell of being punched in the face because of his music.Stranger Fruits is out June 8
