Perpendicular Festival is a pilgrimage for electronic music devotees, who like their electronic music edgy, innovative, and deep, drawing them from across the globe to Spain's secluded woodlands. A brainchild of the crew behind Madrid's iconic Espacio Perpendicular venue, the festival features the vanguard of ambient and techno (and everything in between) over three days and nights. We are delighted and honored to present you with some of the sets from this year's edition of the Perpendicular Festival. Keep an eye on our "Delayed with..." series in the upcoming months because some incredible sets are coming your way. We are starting in style. Hardcore Chillout co-founder, a London-based artist Mark Geary, aka Eight Fold Way, who in his spare time explores the multidimensionality of sound, graced the decks on Sunday late afternoon. Even though it feels that there is overuse of terms like "journey," "trip," or "voyage," these types of DJ sets should be referred to as such without hesitation. Eight Fold Way expertly unveils new layers of sound as the set slowly develops from experimental ambient to chuggier and broken low-slung rhythms that, with such ease, morph into the deepest shades of techno. Once the listeners arrive at the bottom of the Mariana trench, Eight Fold Way keeps the tension sprinkled with several curveballs dipped in acid and quirky, very hypnotic percussions. The whole set feels like a natural progression from one style to another, and that's a quality of skillful DJ. Mark brings on proper UK vibes in the last quarter of the mix and finishes it with Neinzer's gem - Horus from Timedance's Patina Echoes compilation from a few years back. Recorded live at Perpendicular Festival on May 26, 2024. https://soundcloud.com/eightfoldway https://www.instagram.com/eightfoldway/ https://soundcloud.com/espacio-perpendicular https://soundcloud.com/hardcore-chillout
We have fairy tales and weary tales. Poems of home and coming home. A modern take of an old carol. A tale of a precious gift received from a mother, cherished for more than six decades. Silent nights and Christmas candlelight from long ago. We have an usual partnership of a religious leader and an aging rocker running a food hut in the wilds of Cork that begs the question who is Christmas for anyway? With Frances Browner, Carol McNamara, Madge O'Callaghan. Liam Cahalan, Anthony Lenihan Anne McDonald, Tom Kennedy and Patricia Donnellan. Music by The Pogues and Kirsty McColl, The Christmas Guys, Mark Geary, Enya and The Clancy Brothers. In 2023 we said farewell to two of our ‘A Flow of Words' contributors Michael O' Gorman and Marcella McNamara. We remember them this season and dedicate this show to their memory as we replay their Christmas pieces. Suaimhneas síoraí dóibh. Happy Christmas and thank you to all fellow Radio and Arts Festival volunteers and to all the contributors and listeners to ‘A Flow of Words'.
Ospiti della puntata per intervista e mini live Mark Geary e Jono Manson, in uscita con il suo nuovo album Stars Enough To Guide Me
Our goal here is to have conversations that inspire and to help move the dial forward for organisations to become more human-centred in their approach to solving complex business and societal problems. This is a new type of episode that I am looking to explore more over the coming years, and that is looking laterally into other fields where we as change-makers can find inspiration. And inspiration you are 100% about to feel and hear in this conversation with one of the finest singer-songwriters around anywhere today, and that is Mark Geary. The music you hear throughout this episode, is from Mark's first album, released in 2002 and has accompanied me on my journey as a designer and an ex-patriot whilst living in Australia. It wasn't until recently though that we really got to sit face to face, in front of turf stove, and drink countless coffees and sing and play guitar together in Mark's gorgeous cottage in the wilds of a rainy Autumn day deep within a forest on the outskirts of Dublin. In this conversation we talk about the remarkable journey Mark has been on over the last 2-decades that has seen him play all over the world. Mark doesn't play music to be adored, he plays to exist - it's part of who he is. It's part of his fabric. He constantly tours around the world, often with Glen Hansard, another phenomenally talented Irish musician. We speak about his roots in Sin-E in New York, a place where he cut his teeth - a free flowing cafe that many music lovers will automatically connect with Jeff Buckley, but this was a community of like minded people, that cheered and nurtured their own. A community, much like our own within This is HCD, that is trying to figure it all out and get ahead. There are points in this conversation where we chat about Mark's environment, and how having the space set up and ready to channel whatever it is that we call ‘it' - how this affects the process. Mark's guitars are all around the place, and he's constantly playing, experimenting, trying and testing out ideas. He's a master crafts person. We even talk how this environment is shaping his music, or maybe his music is shaping his environment. How living within a forest is permeating into his latest release, with his latest single being called The Forest. Let's get into it! I caught up recently with the fantastic, deep thinking singer songwriter Mark Geary who is the middle of writing a new album and a big medical procedure on his hand to enable him to resume his playing. One of 10 kids, the son of a brick layer in Dublin, he has enjoyed huge success, boasts a brilliant catalog and has had a fascinating career which started by learning the ropes the hard way in New York playing in the legendary Sin E bar alongside artists and friends Jeff Buckley and Glen Hansard. We chat about the precarious "tight rope" that artists walk on each day, the huge challenge of Covid and his monastic life in the forest! Enjoy the show! This show has been brought to you by Fuzion Communications, a Marketing, PR, Graphic Design and Digital Marketing Agency in Ireland with offices in Dublin and Cork. The show is produced by Greg Canty
Pete Holmes, Sam Jay, Jake Kroeger, Andy Peters, and Steph Tolev are on the roundtable. Mark Geary, John Leadley, and Kate Mitchell from the Lincoln Lodge in Chicago (Brido's favorite show) are here for the interview. Video is up at patreon.com/brido

I caught up with Rebecca and Danielle - both previous guests on the Social Fabric Podcast (episode 78 and 73) to talk about the pandemic from a normal everyday life point of view. Rebecca is just outside New York City, Danielle is in Wexford, Pennsylvania. I was delighted to hear that the two of them got to know each other through the podcast and that once the pandemic is over they will hopefully meet and share a glass of wine. Strangely, we are all connected via stories of Mark Geary, Irish Musician, also a guest on the Social Fabric Podcast (episode 71) Hope you'll enjoy it. Jane Willow grew up in the Netherlands, but her love for music eventually brought her over to Ireland. Started busking around the streets of Dublin as a young 20 year-old playing her melancholic musical heroes such as Leonard Cohen, to whom she has found an almost spiritual affinity. She supported artists such as Glen Hansard, Mark Geary and Andy Irvine as well as performing with a number of other musicians including Lisa Hannigan. She has released a number of singles and her debut EP ‘Onward Still’ (Nov ‘18) she collaborated with musicians Dave Hingerty and Vyvienne Long amongst others. I bumped into Renato in Ernesto's, Rathmines, during a Mark Geary's concert. We kept in touch and I caught up with him last week to see what it was like in Italy at the moment. Renato lives on a few short kilometers from the epicentre of the Virus in Italy, close to Bergamo. He spoke to me about it and also about his love for Ireland, having created and run www.celticworld.it and when he played on stage with Glen Hansard. The conversation is in Italian (my first one!!) At the end of the podcast the song I play is performed by Renato and is a beautiful rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's tune.. Enjoy. Years ago, I reviewed Mark Geary's album Ghosts for the sadly departed Boston Phoenix. I would pop that CD in my player on occasion, but fell out of touch with his music for a while. Then a couple of months before this interview, I got an instant message from Geary on Facebook that he'd be playing a few miles away. It was around two in the morning, but I got my tickets a few minutes later, and saw a fantastic show at a little place called The Carriage House in Newburyport, Massachusetts. It was wonderful to catch up with Geary and hear his new music. At the beginning of the conversation, we talk a bit about his recent gigs in Portugal, a place Geary had not played previously. That piqued my curiosity, since Geary is such a talented lyricist and a great storyteller live. I wondered how that would translate in a place where there might be a language barrier. That's where we start, talking about playing for international audiences. The circumstances of the Carriage House show led to a conversation about Facebook and Instagram as tools for getting the word out about shows and new music. In the middle of his career, the parameters of promoting yourself as a one-man-traveling-band changed, and while it's still very hands on, it can feel kind of insincere. We talked about not letting social media get in the way of actually creating art, a difficult proposition when you need to fill a room to keep gigging to even have a place to play your songs for people. We got into details about his new album The Fool in the latter half of the podcast, how people don't always catch the humor in his lyrics, and about watching Colin Quinn during his time in New York. For horror fans, there is a bit at the end about the movie A Quiet Place, which Geary had said he was looking forward to seeing when I saw him live. Very slight spoilers in that conversation, if you're sensitive to that type of thing. If you don't know Geary, I hope hearing him prods you to check out his music, and if you do know him, this wide-ranging conversation should be a treat.

Those Sensible Shoes are Anthony Mulcahy and Rachel Stern. They formed in the summer of 2014 after meeting at a Big City Folk event and started writing and performing together soon thereafter. Beginning with a cover of Bloodbuzz Ohio by the National, recorded in the backroom of a Brooklyn bar, they soon moved on to writing their own original music. They experiment with intricate harmonies and unique lyrics, inspired by their own distinctive backgrounds. The concept of a duo is key to Those Sensible Shoes, and their music emphasizes the beauty of two voices together.Rachel (vocals) is from New York City and has been writing and performing for a couple of years. She grew up listening to the Band, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, which formed her musical sense from an early age. Untrained but always singing since age 4, Stern has cultivated a unique vocal sound that she brings to Those Sensible Shoes. She has been heavily influenced in her own songwriting by Laura Marling, Nick Drake, and the Milk Carton Kids. In Rob's opinion (which doesn't count for much), Mark Geary is the finest singer/songwriter currently working today, so he was delighted when Mark dropped by to chat about his most recent album "Songs About Love, Songs ABout Leaving", his upcoming performance at the Gealach Gorm festival and treat us to no less than THREE acoustic tunes. Also, find out about Mark's brush with Christopher Walken in a sexy low-budget horror shlock film. The man's a legend.
