When goods, services and rights go back and forth within a company, how do you attribute profit or loss to one part of the company versus another? Former OECD head of tax treaties and transfer pricing Mary Bennett and EY's Mike McDonald join this episode of “GILTI Conscience” for a detailed discussion on the attribution of profits to permanent establishments. Skadden tax partners David Farhat and Nate Carden and associate Stefane Victor host the discussion, which explores, among other topics, critical differences between Articles 7 and 9 of the OECD Model Tax Convention and why these distinctions matter for multinational businesses.

Facing death is an inevitability, but doing so when it is being violently ripped away leaves a rip in the fabric that can not be repaired. Listen now to Girl Gone Running

You can't talk about confidence artists and their games without talking about one of the classics: the shell game. It's been called a lot of things over the decades, and during the time and place we're going to visit in this episode, it was 'thimblerig'. It's often portrayed as a gambling game, but it's actually a con used to fleece unsuspecting bettors. Samuel Bennett was one of the best-known 'thimbleriggers' – perhaps ever, depending who you ask – and he made a fortune scamming passengers on steamboats along America's waterways in the 19th century.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Enjoy two free horror episodes of Inner Sanctum Mystery w/ Paul McGrath A) 5/30/49 The Corpse is Lonely B) 4/17/50 Beneficiary, Death Taking its name from a popular series of mystery novels, Inner Sanctum Mystery debuted over NBC's Blue Network in January 1941. Inner Sanctum Mystery featured one of the most memorable and atmospheric openings in radio history: an organist hit a dissonant chord, a doorknob turned and the famous “creaking door” slowly began to open. Every week, Inner Sanctum Mystery told stories of ghosts, murderers and lunatics. Produced in New York by Himan Brown, the casts usually consisted of veteran radio actors, with occasional guest appearances by Hollywood stars including Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre and Claude Rains. What made Inner Sanctum Mystery unique among radio horror shows was its host -- a slightly sinister sounding fellow originally known as “Raymond.” The host had a droll sense of humor and an appetite for ghoulish puns, and his influence can be seen among horror hosts everywhere, from the Crypt-Keeper to Elvira. Raymond Edward Johnson was the show's host until 1945; Paul McGrath took over as host until the show left the air in 1952. Beginning in 1945, Lipton Tea sponsored the series, pairing Raymond and a cheery spokeswoman (Mary Bennett – the Lipton Tea Lady), whose sprightly pitches for Lipton Tea seemed out of place with the macabre themes of the stories. Later in the run, Bromo-Seltzer came aboard as sponsor. In 1974-82, producer, Himan Brown, would utilize the creaking door again in his masterful attempt to resurrect radio drama, The CBS Radio Mystery Theater.

Marissa chats with JC Peterson about her debut YA contemporary - BEING MARY BENNETT - as well as the truth universally acknowledged that it can be difficult to talk to family and friends about your writing journey, and why it's important to have writers in your life who "get it"; writing character arc-driven books that contain genuine growth, not superficial makeovers, and how the relationships in the story can shine a light on the different ways your protagonist has changed; one technique to try if you're worried your character's voice might be falling flat; how to handle a secondary character that your readers will have a very different opinion of than your protagonist; writing a romantic interest that is both super dreamy and also very believable; and using humor, banter, and voice to make your unlikeable protagonist... well, likeable.Books discussed in this episode can be purchased from your local independent bookstore or buy them online from the Happy Writer bookshop.org store (that benefits indie bookstores) at  https://bookshop.org/shop/marissameyer

Ron and Mary Bennett are senior staff with the Navigators and have specialized in discipleship ministry for nearly 50 years. They discuss the difficult question "how does the church implement an effective discipleship ministry” in the midst of a busy church environment of programs? Part of the problem is a lack of an agreed-upon definition of a disciple. Ron and Mary suggest moving from a Greek definition of a disciple (more of a student) and into a Hebrew understanding of a disciple — an apprentice; moving from transferring information to that of an apprenticeship model where "life on life" is the goal.

We are starting a new series with Ron and Mary Bennett, Senior Staff with the Navigators. They share about their background and how they met the Navigators. The Navigators emphasized making Christianity practical and personal. Later they share their hearts about their son Brian and how the Lord ministered to them through his life and challenges. Ron shares how he learned that God's grace allowed him to live not in yesterday where he might be angry for how things turned out, nor live for tomorrow (which might result in anxiety) but how God's grace was sufficient for today.

Mary Bennett, a Marymount College graduate and counselor. Mary’s warm and inviting, she hugs me right away, and we sit on her bed for our chat. Her room smells like fresh laundry and traces of powdery, floral notes, or as Mary calls them, her old school perfumes. On her altar she’s arranged photographs of her kin and a vase of artificial roses nestled among plants. Within minutes, we’re transported into the most emotional memory of her childhood, the unexpected death of her father. This tragic event led her to move from Charleston, South Carolina to New York City, to live with her father’s sister. Her move echoes the migration of her aunt, a former sharecropper, and the Great Migration of millions of Black Americans from the South to cities in the East, Midwest and West. Mary’s crime is non-violent, but her path to incarceration reveals multiple traumas rooted in America’s violent, racist history. We discuss her struggles with poverty, drug addiction, being forced to grow up too fast, physical abuse and self-esteem. Mary has a deep empathy for her mother’s experience as a sharecropper, how the hardship she survived made it hard for her to show her daughters love.

Inner Sanctum Mysteries was a popular old-time radio program that aired from January 7, 1941 to October 5, 1952. Created by Himan Brown, the anthology series featured stories of mystery, terror and suspense. The tongue-in-cheek introductions were in sharp contrast to shows like Suspense and The Whistler. A total of 526 episodes are known to have been produced. The early 1940s programs opened with Raymond Edward Johnson introducing himself as, "Your host, Raymond," in a mocking sardonic voice. A spooky melodramatic organ score punctuated Raymond's many morbid jokes and playful puns. Raymond's closing was an elongated "Pleasant dreaaaaammmmssss!" His tongue-in-cheek style and ghoulish relish of his own tales became the standard for many such horror narrators to follow, from fellow radio hosts like Ernest Chappell (on Cooper's later series, Quiet, Please) and Maurice Tarplin (on The Mysterious Traveler) to EC Comics' Crypt-Keeper in various incarnations of Tales from the Crypt. In interviews, EC publisher Bill Gaines stated that he based EC's three horror hosts not on Raymond but on Old Nancy, host of radio's earlier The Witch's Tale (1931-38). When Johnson left the series in 1945, he was replaced by Paul McGrath, who did not keep the "Raymond" name and was known only as "your host" or "Mr. Host." Beginning in 1945, Lipton Tea sponsored the series, pairing first Raymond and then McGrath with its cheery commercial spokeswoman, Mary Bennett, whose pitches for Lipton contrasted sharply with the subject matter of the stories, and who would primly chide the host for his dark humor and creepy manner.THIS EPISODE:April 15, 1944. CBS network origination, AFRS rebroadcast. "The Walking Skull". A skull is dug up from an old Indian burial ground. It then finds its way into the house. Even after it's reburied, it comes back! The story is also known as, "The Skull That Walked." Raymond Edward Johnson (host), Howard Duff (AFRS announcer), Jackson Beck (in the fill drama), Berry Kroeger, Lesley Woods, Alan Devitt. 29:50.
