Matt Gilhooly shares key lessons from his career journey, emphasizing the importance of making decisions for oneself rather than conforming to societal expectations. He reflects on how, for much of his life, he followed a traditional path—getting good grades, pursuing higher education, and climbing the corporate ladder—without considering what truly interested him. After facing challenges in his work environment, particularly with a problematic colleague he refers to as a "bulldozer," Matt realized the need to prioritize his mental well-being and take control of his career. This led him to make bold choices, like asking for a demotion to find a more fulfilling role and ultimately pursuing opportunities that scared him, such as starting a podcast. As he embarks on this month of daily episodes, he encourages listeners to choose paths that align with their true selves rather than seeking external validation.Takeaways:Experiencing challenges in the workplace can teach valuable lessons about self-advocacy. Taking a step back to focus on our mental health is essential for personal growth. Pursuing discomfort can lead to unexpected learning experiences and personal development. Making bold career decisions like asking for a demotion can reclaim your happiness. Surrounding yourself with supportive friends can transform your outlook and encourage growth. This week marks the 80th episode of Untether Your Life. It's "kind of a big deal" in the podcasting space, where 90% of shows don't make it past episode 3. For this important milestone, I chose to rebroadcast my appearance on The Life Shift, hosted by my friend Matt Gilhooly - largely to help commemorate the two year anniversary of his incredible podcast. Congrats Matt on this "pivotal" moment! Matt is an incredible host, who I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with about: The meaning of the "Untether Your Life" mantra; how a seemingly stable life of ticking off all the items on a checklist can mask huge discontent that requires a radical breakthrough. When reflecting on the triumphs and breakthroughs in later chapters of our "life book," the importance of honoring the difficult, messy, and often painful lessons from "Chapter One" The genesis and mission of The Life Shift Podcast; how Matt tapped into the tragic, premature loss of his mother when he was 8, to create a powerful platform for guests to share the pivotal moments of their lives. The difficulty of correctly diagnosing bipolar disorder, given that patients with this condition only come to seek treatment when they're in a depressive state - thereby exacerbating the problem. The vital importance of humility and awareness in seeking resolution for mental health challenges - beyond the "hacks" / "just add water" models circulating on YouTube, Instagram, and other channels. The irrelevance of titles, salaries, or other traditional hallmarks of "making it" when defining how aligned we are with our true dharma - or "right way of living" The role of serendipity in the journey of a podcaster in storytelling, and diving deep into topics that make their heart sing. The implication of bipolar disorder on oscillations between types on extroverted and introverted personality types. Today's show is all about, yes, whether you can make money through podcasting. Pilar has made a bit, but not proper money. She mentions Entrepreneurs on Fire, as the first show she heard was turned into a business. Do you remember that? Sponsorship is also a common way for shows to bring in some cash, as well as through membership sites like Patreon. You can hear past guest Matt Gilhooly talk about how he uses Patreon in episode 35. Recommended podcasts for today:The Creative Penn with Joanna Penn. It's a must listen for indie authors, but also interesting for any podcaster to hear the rapport that Joanna has with her audience during her solo sections. Access the Work Journal prompts Normally solo episodes are just that... solo. But for this episode Kristy is sharing her interview with Matt Gilhooly from The Life Shift podcast. In this interview Kristy shares the story of a very specific moment that changed the trajectory of her life. It woke her up from living a life on auto-pilot and was the catalyst for restarting a journaling practice. You could say this life shift moment is the origin story of all of the personal growth from the last 5 years. Without that moment and the resulting practice of journaling regularly there may never have been a podcast, a speaking business, a renewed family focus, a job change. Make peace with who you are and what you bring to the world and be confident with that. Many people avoid the word "authentic", however how Matt puts it and how he shares that most of his life he lived in a fear that was in his head only, a fear that he wasn't even aware that he felt, you'll soon realize that this wonderful human is so in touch with who he is, that it's contagious. This episode is a beautiful lesson of self acceptance, gratitude and fun towards life. "It's just me. Take it or leave it". A brilliant conversation about life, mental health and grief. How Matt has fearlessly held probably the toughest, yet at the same time, the most vulnerable and wonderful conversation of his life, with his grandma, before she passed away. How he was so blessed to have spent the last minutes of his grandma's life together with her. How he became a "grief specialist". I've cried several times talking to Matt and I cried some more as I relistened to our conversation. Matt has opened up completely and has shared beautiful and impactful moments from his life and also, how he began his journey as a podcaster, which is "the most fulfilling thing I've done". Matt Gilhooly's life took a sharp turn at the age of eight when a tragic accident claimed the life of his mother. Thrust into a world of grief and confusion, Matt struggled to make sense of his loss, eventually burying his pain deep within. As he grew older, he strived for perfection in all aspects of life, fearing abandonment and seeking validation from those around him. It wasn't until his 30s that Matt confronted his grief head-on and began the process of healing, thanks in part to a therapist who helped him see the impact his mother's death had on his life."The boy that walked into that room was not the same as the boy who walked out. His life was changed forever based on that single, sudden announcement."Strengthen your relationships by nurturing honest, vulnerable, and bold conversations with those around you. Matt Gilhooly is quite new to the podcasting scene, he launched ‘The Life Shift' Podcast in March 2022 but has already recorded over 40 episodes! He joins The Podcasters Podcast to talk about the strength of the podcasting community, the why behind his podcast as well as the importance of your ‘who': your guests and audience. KEY TAKEAWAYS The life shift podcast is about picking out pivotal moments in people's lives, based originally on Matt's own life-changing moment after the death of his mother. The concept behind the podcast is very unique, it allows the listeners to connect to Matt and his guests in a real human and unadulterated way. Matt understands the concept of the ‘podfade' but because he is so passionate about what he does and the human connection it creates he doesn't believe it is something that will happen to him and his podcast. You can't solely create a podcast for business reasons, you need a strong why to have long-lasting success. Your listeners can sense passion. There are a lot of prescriptive rules for podcasting which doesn't always feel like it aligns with Matt's vision, his show's concept doesn't always feel like it fits. You don't need to do video as well as podcasting, it's more important that you focus on the audio first and foremost. If you then have the time to commit to video that's great. Something that surprised Matt about podcasting is how non-competitive people are in the podcasting space and community. BEST MOMENTS “It's probably the best and most fulfilling journey I have been on” “I understand the podfade as a concept” “Podcasting is a long game, you've got to have a passion about what you're talking about” “There are a lot of people who are like ‘this is the way you should do it'” “Your competitors are your best collaborators” VALUABLE RESOURCES 4 Steps to the Perfect Podcast Launch Just Launch Already! This is a REPLAY of episode 11, launched in May 2022. I wanted to share this episode again for new subscribers that have yet to hear my story and the WHY behind The Life Shift Podcast. In this episode, we flipped the script so I could tell my story. Throughout the first batch of episodes, the guests (and listeners) asked when I would tell my story. So, in this episode, my first guest, Christin Lindley, leads the conversation as I share the pivotal moments that shaped my life and eventually led to The Life Shift podcast. As a child, Matt faced his mother's sudden and unexpected death. At just 8 years old, he had to grapple with the grief and sadness that comes with such a tragedy. He was also forced to adjust to a new life in Georgia, where he had to start school as "the new kid." Despite all this, he found comfort in his grandmother's love and support. Unfortunately, she eventually got a lung cancer diagnosis, and it became clear that her time was limited. On her 82nd birthday, they had a wonderful celebration surrounded by family. During this time, they had an honest conversation about their relationship and expressed gratitude for each other. After she passed away, he took time to process his grief and come out on the other side with clarity. He realized that he had been living his life to other people's expectations, but now he could live authentically for himself. He learned that it's okay to be sad but also happy for the experiences you shared together. Grief is something you never get over, but it's important to process it to move forward in life.---Matt Gilhooly is a creator - podcaster, communicator, and educator. To celebrate the end of season one, I compiled a collection of the final questions for each of the first 32 episodes of The Life Shift Podcast. I know that many listeners like to hear how the guest answers the final question.Typically the questions are:"If you could go back to the version of you right before your pivotal moment, what would you say?""If someone listening is in a similar position, what would you want to tell them?"What have you learned from this moment?"Thank you for being a part of this journey. In this episode, I talk to my friend Becca Berkey about the more recent pivotal moments in her life – the convergence of many nearly simultaneously. In one year, Becca got pregnant at 37, lost two family members on the same day, and then the world shut down due to the pandemic. But the most interesting part about her story is her journey that brought her to live authentically – driven by her values. My favorite part of this story is how she describes her journey – as a vase with cracks that eventually shattered to be reborn as something new, perhaps a mosaic table. We are a product of our journeys, and I hope many moments of Becca's journey resonate deeply and help someone feel slightly less alone.Becca Berkey is an interdisciplinary learner, researcher, and educator with a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Butler University, a Master's degree in College Student Personnel from Miami University, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from Antioch University New England. In this episode, I host my new connection, Kelly Anderson. Kelly and I met through LinkedIn, but as you will notice through the conversation, we found a strong connection through the discussion about her pivotal moments. In this episode, Kelly talks about how she left the corporate world to find her purpose. Her story will resonate with anyone that has ever asked themselves, “Is this all there is to life? The same routine day in and day out?” I loved having this conversation with Kelly and creating new, stronger bonds with people living their purpose.Kelly is a Certified Life Coach, spiritual enthusiast, and former 9-5 corporate ladder climber. After navigating several massive life changes during the pandemic, Kelly experienced a soul awakening that set her on the path of fully stepping into her purpose. Through her coaching business, she helps change-makers and soul-driven individuals shift from feeling "stuck" to thriving in their unique version of purpose and fulfillment.Connect with Kelly:Instagram: @iamkellyandersonLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kellyandersoncoaching/Offerings: https://linktr.ee/iamkellyandersonTo listen to more conversations about pivotal moments that changed lives forever, subscribe to "The Life Shift" on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts.www.facebook.com/thelifeshiftpodcastInstagram: @thelifeshiftpodcastIf you'd like to support the show's recording and hosting costs, please visit: www.thelifeshiftpodcast.comPlease take a moment to rate the show. After a Tragic Accident, Love Carries on in Memories and their Children | Ep 9: Rachel FiorelloIn this episode, I speak with my high school friend (and my grandmother's favorite neighbor) Rachel. She tells the story of fate intervening multiple times on her journey to marry the love of her life, Matt. Love won, and Rachel and Matt created a beautiful family of four. In a single moment in 2019, Rachel's dream was shattered after losing her husband Matt in a tragic accident. We talk about how things have changed for her and her daughters. My favorite part of this conversation is when Rachel tells us how she keeps the memory of Matt alive. She's even acquired some of his favorite tastes. In this episode of The Life Shift podcast, I talked to my friend Marty about the loss of his mother as a child. We highlight the similarities in our shifts throughout this conversation and note the vastly different ways our lives changed. What I found most interesting in our chat is how Marty's upbringing likely somewhat dictated his approach to loss and grief. We discussed how those early childhood moments may have been integral in how Marty curated the life he wanted to live.Once a proud Californian, Marty now calls Orlando, Florida home but loves to travel often and definitely “works to live.” You can probably find him planning his next trip, perfecting a cocktail recipe, or visiting Disney parks (where he was previously a tour guide). To listen in on more conversations about pivotal moments that changed lives forever, subscribe to "The Life Shift" on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts.www.facebook.com/thelifeshiftpodcastInstagram: @thelifeshiftpodcastIf you'd like to support the show's recording and hosting costs, please visit: www.thelifeshiftpodcast.comPlease take a moment to rate the show.
