The Glacier View Mountain Trail north of Columbia Falls begins on the border of Glacier National Park. This out-and-back trail is about 8 miles roundtrip, and despite beginning your ascent via switchbacks, the first few miles are still quite steep. But the view at the top is worth the effort. Looking east from the summit, you'll be greeted with gorgeous views of the North Fork Flathead River and a unique view of Glacier without entering the park. Learn why Montana's low power bills are possible thanks to renewable energy and creative solutions like biomass and hydroelectric power. Ever wondered where the electricity powering your home actually comes from? If you're in Montana like me, you might be surprised. Power bills are a common question from homebuyers, and I recently dug into some fascinating details about our energy sources. Let me break it down for you. Low power bills? Here's why: Montana enjoys some of the lowest electricity costs in the country. But why is that? It's because we rely on a mix of energy sources, some of which are incredibly efficient and renewable. Knowing where your electricity comes from can help you appreciate it—and understand the challenges we face in keeping those costs low. Why does solar power struggle here? You'd think solar energy would be a big deal, right? But Montana doesn't see enough sunny days to make solar a year-round option. It's not like living in a desert. This means solar isn't contributing much to our power grid right now. The hidden heroes of our energy grid. We do have some creative solutions, though. Ever heard of biomass? That's when waste, like landfill gas or leftover materials from processing plants, is turned into energy. In places like Columbia Falls, they're converting waste into gas and running turbines to generate electricity. Understanding where our electricity comes from isn't just interesting—it's important. Then there's hydroelectric power. Small turbines, like the one powered by Whitefish City's water reservoir, generate electricity from flowing water. It's a clean and effective way to keep the lights on. The big player: hydroelectric dams. Here's the star of the show—our dams. Montana gets a huge chunk of electricity from hydroelectric dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. These dams don't just power homes. They support businesses, manufacturing, and even grocery stores. But there's a problem. Some people want to remove these dams, which could devastate our power grid. Without them, costs would rise, and industries might suffer. It's a big deal that impacts everyone. Understanding where our electricity comes from isn't just interesting—it's important. It's up to us to protect these resources. Pay attention to policies that affect our dams and renewable energy programs. Every decision matters when it comes to keeping our power reliable and affordable. Columbia Falls sprinter Malaki Simpson knows this is his year to become a state champion. In his three prior appearances at the state meet in Laurel (2021, 2023) and Butte (2022) Simpson hasn't claimed any individual titles.  Another trip to Laurel awaits Simpson, who is prequalified in the 100 and 200, as well as with the 400-meter relay team he anchors.Simpson currently sits with the fastest time in Class A and fourth-fastest in the state for the 100 at 10.85 seconds, and second in Class A for the 200 at 22.05 — just .04 off of the fastest time. As a junior he finished second in the finals of both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes.“I think it has pushed me to try harder and to hopefully bring home the win in both events,” Simpson said. Flathead County and multiple citizen groups are asking federal environmental regulators to reconsider proposed cleanup plans for an aluminum plant Superfund site.

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Feb. 10 at 6 a.m. CT: Millions of Americans will find something to be excited about when it comes to Super Bowl Sunday. That’s before even factoring in the influence of Taylor Swift. Four in 10 U.S. adults are extremely or very excited for at least one part of the Super Bowl day’s festivities. That could be the game, commercials, halftime show or the Puppy Bowl, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The Kansas City Chiefs will play the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas. A total solar eclipse is coming to North America. On April 8, the sun will pull another disappearing act across parts of Mexico, the United States and Canada, turning day into night for as much as 4 minutes, 28 seconds. That's twice as long as the total solar eclipse that darkened U.S. skies in 2017. This eclipse will take a different and more populated route, entering over Mexico's Pacific coast, dashing up through Texas and Oklahoma, crisscrossing the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and New England, before exiting over eastern Canada into the Atlantic. There won’t be another U.S. eclipse, spanning coast to coast, until 2045. NEW YORK (AP) — Noticeable pockets of Americans — renters, and lower- and middle-income borrowers — are running up their credit cards balances, and increasing numbers are falling behind on their debts. It’s the latest sign that while the U.S. economy is broadly healthy, the last two years of inflation have sapped much of the savings of vulnerable Americans, possibly leading to further deterioration of their financial health this year. The credit rating company Moody’s says credit card delinquency and charge-off rates are well above 2019 levels. They're expected to keep climbing. Americans held more than $1.05 trillion on their credit cards in the third quarter, a historic high, and the average credit card rate is the highest it's ever been since the Fed started tracking the data. PHOENIX (AP) — For months after George Floyd was killed by police in May 2020, people from around the world traveled to the site of his murder in Minneapolis and left signs, paintings and poems to memorialize the man whose death reignited a movement against systemic racism. Now hundreds of those artifacts are being displayed at an exhibit at the Arizona State University Art Museum. It’s the first time the work is on public display outside of Minnesota. Paintings of Floyd and poems written about him stand on easels throughout the exhibit, while protest signs made from paper plates and reused cardboard cover the walls. Some visitors were moved to tears as they moved through the exhibit. NEW YORK (AP) — Small business acquisitions were up and down last year, reflecting the increase in interest rates that threw a chill into the market. But a strong fourth quarter, helped by a signal from the Federal Reserve that it was done raising interest rates, could bode well for 2024. Overall, the number of small business acquisitions were largely unchanged in 2023, according to business marketplace BizBuySell’s Insight Data, which tracks and analyzes U.S. business-for-sale transactions. A total of 9,093 businesses were reported sold on BizBuySell in 2023, up less than 1% from the 9,054 businesses sold in 2022. People do not need to wear lead aprons or thyroid collars when getting X-rays at the dentist. That's according to the American Dental Association. The new recommendation is just that, however. State rules may dictate if people have to wear the aprons, and some states still require them. Experts say there needs to be more education on the safety and risks of X-rays to broadly change minds about the aprons. COLUMBIA FALLS, Maine (AP) — A family with an audacious plan to build the world’s tallest flagpole as a centerpiece for a billion-dollar project honoring veterans is abandoning the idea. An attorney said Friday that the Worcester family won’t pursue the flagpole project in Washington County or elsewhere. Instead they will look for other ways to honor veterans. The plan has divided the town of Columbia Falls, population 485. Residents are preparing to vote next month on proposed ordinances governing large-scale developments. A town select board member says a flagpole stretching 1,461 feet skyward wouldn’t meet the proposed ordinances’ height restrictions. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronomers are reporting the best evidence yet of a vast, young ocean beneath the icy exterior of Saturn's Death Star-looking mini moon. The French-led team based its findings Wednesday on observations by NASA's former Cassini spacecraft. By analyzing changes in Mimas' orbit and rotation, the scientists have concluded that the frozen crust hides an ocean that's only 5 million to 15 million years old. The findings open up the possibility of water — and life — at seemingly sterile moons. COOKE CITY, Mont. (AP) — The day after a Minnesota man survived an avalanche while snowmobiling in Montana's backcountry, government forecasters posted details of the near-tragedy as yet another cautionary tale. Avalanche safety specialists say their job has become more difficult in recent years as the number of skiers and snowmobilers visiting backcountry areas surges after the pandemic. Shifting weather patterns due to climate change further complicate safety efforts, and four people already have died this year in snowslides in Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and California. Despite the growing risks, the U.S. avalanche death rate has stayed relatively constant in recent years. Montana State Youth Court Services and the issues they create. Alan Donovan introduces his guest, Maggie Roshan, who is having serious issues with the service, and how it is alienating her from her daughter. Maggie explains that there have been issues with her daughter, such as runaways and skipping school, which has resulted in CPS being mandatory reporters and her having to work with them. She then explains that her daughter stole her vehicle in the middle of the night and blew the engine, and was then picked up in Columbia Falls. Maggie is a single parent who is struggling to raise her daughter. Her daughter is exhibiting signs of juvenile crime, which she attributes to the lack of two parents in the household. She had her first child at 15 and got pregnant with her daughter while on the IUD or the shot. The speaker's daughter had taken the family car and was eventually apprehended by youth court services. The speaker wanted a more formal agreement than the informal one offered by the court, as it did not provide the help she was seeking. The Columbia Falls Wildcats boys wrestling team took home the 2022-2023 MHSA class A State Championship in Billings last weekend while the Flathead boys and girls took home second and third for class AA. Glacier's Teegan Vasquez joined an exclusive club by winning his fourth straight title, the 39th wrestler in Montana history to accomplish the feat. The Prep Basketball scene was also jam-packed as usual with Columbia Falls beating Whitefish in the Cat-Dog basketball game and Flathead rallying to beat Helena Capital. Plus, the Glacier Wolfpack swim team had a strong showing at the MHSA swim meet this past weekend with the boys finishing second and girls coming in fourth. The wrestling postseason has begun with the Flathead Brave Brawlers boys and girls sweeping the Western AA tournament. The Flathead basketball program also had a big weekend with the boys earning their first win of the season and girls extended their winning streak to six games with an overtime win. Another high school soccer season has come to a close in Montana, and in this episode of Soccer In Snow & Smoke, Andrew Houghton reviews the fall by catching up with the teams who were left victorious at the end of the state tournaments. Hear from Hellgate boys coach Jay Anderson (0:11), as well as the captains who helped the Knights win their historic fourth straight state title (9:06). In Class AA girls, Joel Ganey and Bozeman Gallatin won the first crown in program history (17:21), while in Class A, hear from Columbia Falls boys coach O'Brien Byrd (33:45) after the WildKats snapped a 17-year title drought and Billings Central girls coach Nolan Trafton (45:46) after the Rams won their record-tying 10th overall state championship.

The Columbia Falls Police Department says it has arrested a 14-year-old boy for allegedly making threats to the local middle school. Police say this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the school.

Last fall, Devynn Fetter came home to find papers stuck in the door of her home in Columbia Falls, Montana. The paperwork let her know that her community of 30 homes was for sale - and that she and her neighbors had the opportunity to buy it for themselves. Once things were in motion, Hideaway Community was on its way to becoming a Resident Owned Community with Dev at the helm as interim Board President, a role she now permanently holds. In the Double A final, the Glacier Wolfpack returned to the championships for the second time in program history to face two-time reigning champion Hellgate down in Missoula. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks hopes to buy nearly 800 acres of private forest lands along the Flathead River. The agency is holding a public meeting about the project on Aug. 26.
