In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Michael Denehey interviews Dave McQuillen, the founder of Sufferfest (wahooX), discusses building his cycling app into a $20M enterprise with 45 team members. He details the tough transition from digital downloads to a subscription model and the importance of staying close to customers. Host Michael Denehey explores McQuillen's journey, from managing growth to achieving work-life balance, and the valuable lessons learned along the way. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Michael delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Dave McQuillen, the hardest thing in growing a small business is choosing what not to do. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on what truly drives success and avoiding distractions from bright, shiny objects that can divert attention and resources. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Dave McQuillen's favorite business books are "Why We Buy" by Paco Underhill and "Setting the Table" by Danny Meyer. He values "Why We Buy" for its insights into consumer behavior and merchandising, and "Setting the Table" for its lessons on customer experience and leadership. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Dave McQuillen didn't find podcasts to be particularly influential during his time with Sufferfest, but he mentioned enjoying cycling podcasts now that he's out of the industry. For growing a small business, he emphasizes the importance of tools that facilitate meaningful conversations with customers, rather than just quantitative surveys. Prototyping ideas and getting feedback directly from users is also crucial. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Dave McQuillen recommends using tools that facilitate direct, meaningful conversations with customers. He emphasizes the value of prototyping ideas and gathering feedback through interactive discussions rather than relying solely on quantitative surveys. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Dave McQuillen advises that he might not give himself any specific advice on day one. He believes that if he had known how challenging and consuming the journey would be, he might have been too scared to start. Embracing the unknown and adapting as things progressed was, in his view, advantageous to his success. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. After a few weeks' break from the podcast, I am back this week with former guest Dave O'Hare. I haven't done too many in-person chats and really enjoyed sitting down with Dave to catch up. The last time I had Dave on the show pre the covid pandemic breakout he was on waiting on his visa to start a coaching role at the University of Memphis. He tells us what happened and his journey to working with Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram, the world's number 1 doubles team. He chats about what he learned the past 2 years, his new philosophies, judging himself, mentors and more.In this episode, I mention our other episodes with tennis coaching guru Louis Cayer and US College Tennis player Conor Gannon who Dave works with when he is back in Ireland.I hope you enjoy my chat with Dave.Fabio

On an irregular basis we invite guests to liven up the party. This week, longtime friend, Gene Reineman, exited the Wayback Machine to join Team Dave. The conversational stroll down memory lane with this former youth pastor and camp director was a lovely wit-fest, and we agreed that our younger, mullet-haired selves were largely unaware of the difficult times to come. Finally, we demanded that our guest justify the name he bestowed on his daughter. Too many people skate through life without being held accountable. Not on our watch.

Dave Gerhardt, Chief Brand Officer at Drift, joined Chris for another Demand Gen Expert Session, this time on the topic of "Marketing and Sales as One Team." Obviously, Marketing and Sales are quite different. But at the end of the day, their end goal should be revenue. By thinking of the two as working together rather than working towards completely separate goals, both teams are better able to drive results for the business. Dave and Chris discussed this in depth as well as where a Chief Revenue Officer and RevOps come into play. They also hosted a live Q&A, answering questions about SDRs, Customer Success, benchmarks, and KPIs. Thanks to our friends at Hatch for producing this episode.
