Recorded on 20 April 2023 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Rick Allen. Healthcare missions, typically conducted in low resource environments is both demanding and exhausting. The impact on one's life can cross professional, relational, and spiritual boundaries. Pre-field healthcare missionaries are not typically prepared for the demands they will encounter. In addition, once they are on the field, they are not cared for in a way that is appropriate for the challenges they face. MedSend is endeavoring to transform the care of healthcare missionaries. In this webinar Rick Allen plans to share some of MedSend's model and role out plans. Rick spent 25 years in executive roles within the computer software business. He was called out of business to be a pastor and run MedSend which provides grants and scholarships for healthcare professionals to live out their calling. Rick stepped away from the role as pastor several years ago and is now the full-time CEO of MedSend. He desires to see many come to know the love of Jesus through the delivery of compassionate healthcare.
In this episode Dr. Stefan Vogt said that in doing God's work you need to have the right people on board or things can go awry.

Medical MissionaryDuring the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901),British people traveled around the whole world. They charted the seas, mapped out distant countries and studied plants, animals and people. They also claimed many lands for England. This kind of international travel was made easier by improved transportation and communication.New inventions such as steamships, trains, telegraphs and telephones made long distances seem smaller.Of course, people had different reasons for going to distant lands. Some were businessmen who saw economic opportunities overseas.Big-game hunters wanted to be the first to shoot strange animals and bring back trophies to England.Scientists intended to study unknown animals and plants.Missionaries planned to be the first to introduce Christianity to faraway people. In 1836 a young Scotsman called David Livingstone began to study medicine in Glasgow.Livingstone intended to become a medical missionary. This means that he would be a doctor, as well as a preacher and teacher.Livingstone (1813-1873) came from a poor family. From an early age, he had worked 14 hours a day in a clothing factory for very little pay.But he was determined to learn. He took his books with him to the factory and read as he worked. Then, after work, he would go to his teacher to learn more.Livingstone's goal was to teach faraway people about Jesus. However, unlike some missionaries, he was also interested in science, geography and exploring. He had planned to go to China in 1839, but because of the Opium Wars no missionaries were being sent there.Instead, he asked to go to South Africa.Europeans had traveled around the coasts of Africa for hundreds of years. But very few white people had traveled inland.A missionary named Robert Moffatt who had begun a mission at Kuruman in the interior inspired Livingstone.Livingstone arrived in Kuruman in 1841.This was the farthest outpost of white settlement, and no one seemed to want to go further inland.Livingstone felt that the missionaries should go to the Africans, rather than waiting for the Africans to come to them. With a fellow missionary he set out. When they came to an African tribe, they would talk to the chief and ask permission to preach to his people.Livingstone would also set up a tent and treat the people who had diseases. After a while, he would move on to the next tribe.Once Livingstone learned the Bantu language he would talk to many Africans. But sometimes he needed interpreters. There were many diseases, including malaria and sleeping sickness.Livingstone suffered much of his life from river fever. He was also so weak that he rode on the back of an ox.Livingstone wanted to stop the slave trade. At this time, the slave trade was the most profitable business in Africa.Livingstone hoped that if other kinds of trade were developed, then slavery could be abolished. In order to open up trade, he wanted to find an easy route into the center of Africa.Livingstone kept going further into the interior. He was probably the first European to cross the Kalahari Desert before reaching Lake Ngami in present-day Botswana. Not long after, he traveled further inland. He explored the sources of the Zambesi and Kasai rivers and eventually reached the west coast of Africa at Luanda, Angola.Livingstone was being criticized for neglecting missionary work in order to explore.Livingstone replied that he was opening up the continent for missionaries.Meanwhile, he was becoming famous as a great explorer. The British government commissioned him to explore the Zambesi River. They hoped that ships could sail up the river into the interior.Unfortunately, the Zambesi had too many rapids. However, Livingstone did find a route up the Shire River to Lake Nyassa. He continued to struggle against the slave trade which was now being taken over by Arabs.Livingstone died in Africa in 1873.He was the first white man to explore Botswana Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and surrounding areas. He was not only a great explorer, but also a fine doctor and a good missionary.Nowadays, the countries that Livingstone visited are nearly all Christian--just as he hoped they would be.

The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step. What if, however, you want to take that journey and turn it into several thousand- or even tens of thousands of steps to leverage your impact as a pharmacist globally and serve as a medical missionary? Speaking as a pharmacist who had the honor of being a part of a medical mission trip in Honduras myself, I cannot begin to express the level of gratitude, self-discovery, and joy that serving as a pharmacist can dispense to the lives we are honored to interact with. That's why when I found another pharmacist who has not just served on ONE mission trip, but several, and even serves on the board of directors for an annual medical mission! In Testimonies to the Church Volume 8 page 77, Ellen White wrote: “The medical missionary work is to be to the work of the church as the right arm to the body.” She went on to state that “The medical missionary work is the gospel in practice.” Clearly, medical missionary work is important, but what is it and what are some practical ways you and I can get involved? Join Esther Louw in this episode of the GYC Beyond Podcast as she discusses these questions and more with Dr. Lela Lewis.
The similarities are many. Perhaps the best preparation one can get for long-term overseas missions is learning to be fruitful as they serve cross-culturally and incarnationally in domestic communities where the needs are great and the resources are slim. Christian clinics that serve the domestic poor have a major role to play in preparing Christian health professionals for serving God's global mission.

The etiology of diarrheal illness in the mission field differs considerably from that in developed countries and requires a different approach for the short-term or new medical missionary. This talk will prepare the medical missionary to evaluate and manage common diarrheal illnesses seen on the mission field, emphasizing clinical evaluation and diagnosis in conditions of limited laboratory availability. The causes of disease commonly seen on the mission field and clinical clues to their diagnosis will be emphasized. Treatment will be discussed with an emphasis on oral rehydration therapy included.
A practical review of parasitic diseases uncommonly seen in the developed world but commonly encountered on the mission field will be presented to help re-familiarize the new or short- term medical missionary with these diseases. The emphasis will be on practical diagnosis and management in settings lacking easy laboratory access.
Medical missions is constantly changing. The enterprise of medical missions has brought health and opened the doors for the gospel in countless countries. This rich history continues today. In Africa, forty to seventy percent of health services are still provided by church and mission facilities. How do we build on the achievements of yesteryears and achieve success in the years to come? How can you fit in? Before 1850, there were fewer that fifteen medical missionaries. The average life expectancy for missionaries in Africa in that day was eight years. Oftentimes, medical missionaries started because missionaries were taught basic medical needs. Around 1890's to early 1900's university campuses began to head overseas as missionaries. Many went to China. This is why you see so many Christians in China today. By 1925 there were 1,157 medical missionaries. Listen to the audio for more details on the past, present, and future of medical missions.
