Medical Teams International is based in Tigard but its workers and volunteers bring life-saving, humanitarian aid around the world. The nonprofit’s president and CEO Eric Ha says the refugees they serve in East Africa fled violence, war or natural disasters. Many of them came years ago from Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Tanzania and other countries. The camps over time have become settlements, and in some cases the MTI programs are people’s only access to any kind of medical care - from treating common diseases like cholera and malaria to providing vaccinations to child health to maternity care. Ha joins us to tell us how MTI is handling the Trump-Musk freeze of federal funds from the state department and USAID.

Recorded on 1 February 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Doug Fountain & Carolyn O'Brien Informing Advocacy: Filling Gaps in Data About the Christian Health Landscape Christian health assets are sometimes overlooked or excluded from programs that strengthen health systems, train health workers, conduct research, and fund services. This is in part because governments, donors, and partners lack quality data about the scope, scale and location of such assets. The Christian Health Asset Mapping Consortium (CHAMC) is a voluntary association of several of the world's largest Christian networks that aims to improve data on Christian health assets, including hospitals, clinics, community programs, health worker training programs, supply agencies, and the networks and volunteer agencies that support them. Doug Fountain serves as CCIH Executive Director. Doug brings over 30 years of experience in health services planning, research, and evaluation and over 20 years in the faith-based and international development sectors. He consults on development strategy and policy with bilateral and multilateral partners and global faith actors. He served in Executive Leadership at Medical Teams International, a relief-focused NGO, and with Uganda Christian University, where he lived for over eight years. He helped start the Christian Health Asset Mapping Consortium, the Christian Journal for Global Health, and the Faculty of Health Sciences at Uganda Christian University. Doug holds an MPA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.S. in Political Science and Economics from the University of Oregon. Carolyn O'Brien is the Program Advisor for CCIH, helping design and monitor programs. Carolyn manages the Christian Health Asset Mapping Consortium, CCIH's 30×30 Health Systems Initiative, and CCIH's new consortium on climate resilience. She coordinates USAID-funded projects in reproductive health, vaccine confidence, and drug supply chains. SummaryWhat are the strengths of faith-based organizations that secular NGOs may have reason to covet? On the other hand, what weaknesses or potential blind spots may faith-based organizations face? And is there anything specific, or ‘typical' about being a woman top leader in a faith-based NGO?In this NGO Soul+Strategy podcast episode, I interview Martha Holley Newsome, President & CEO of Medical Teams International, and we talk among others about women and positional power in faith-based NGOs, and why, based on anecdotal data, they seem to be underrepresented as compared to secular organizations. Martha's Bio:President and CEO, Medical Teams International19 years at World Vision International (Vice President, Sr. Director and head of the Africa Region's HIV/AIDs division, National Director, and more)Degree in Public Health from John Hopkins University We discuss: Medical Teams International is a small to mid-size Christian health and humanitarian aid NGOs, working in the US as well as in 7 countries. In the US, it offers a large dental aid program as well as wrap-around medical and social service care programs for underserved populations such as the elderly, houseless people, and veterans. Outside the US, Medical Teams focuses on long-term refugee and displaced people's medical care needs, primary care improvements, and health sector reforms Medical Teams aims to be a "big tent" for its staff and volunteers (as well as the target populations it serves) – and not to be exclusionary based on people's faith traditionsMartha's own professional journey which ended in senior leadership at World Vision and top leadership at Medical Teams International was heavily influenced by her father's medical career and his tragic loss of life when Martha was 12 years oldWhat Martha learned about change management when she was unprepared to lead a large change process at World Vision: the costs of not focusing on building a strong, broad-based change coalition and on the creation of a strong, widely shared sense of urgency for change. As a result, the intended change process petered outFaith-based NGOs tend to be somewhat behind when it comes to the full inclusion of women in top leadership. Possibly, this is due to unconscious bias, linked to how the religious institutions that these NGOs originate in preach about the role of women during their religious gatherings and services. Quotes“Faith-based NGOs can suffer from isolation when they think their vision suffices. This can come with naivete, and insufficient appreciation for professional standards that sector organizations need to uphold”“Faith-based NGOs come with tremendous assets, through the motivation instilled in staff and volunteers – our vision is our calling”“Younger and smaller faith-based organizations can have a tendency to come barreling into a country setting...instead of being part of a coordinated approach, with other NGOs” Resources:Martha's TwitterMartha's FacebookAmerican Stories Podcast which profiles Martha in detailMedical Teams' Storytelling guide background is HERE (created by a
Mike Goodwin joined the OSU Foundation in 2004. With Oregon State President Ed Ray, he launched the university's first capital campaign in 2007 with a goal to raise $625 million. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has entered its third month with no end in sight, taking a heavy toll on the population. Many are asking how they can help. We'll answer that question today on MoneyWise. The U.N. estimates that more than two million Ukrainians are now refugees as they flee the violence in their country. Mostly women, children and elderly men, they have a critical need for basic commodities. The National Christian Foundation hasprepared a listof U.S based organizations mobilizing to provide that aid. These charities have already been approved to receive grants through NCF's Giving Funds. We'll talk about a handful of them here in no particular order. CHARITIES HELPING UKRAINIANS Aerial Recovery Group: This organization with former U.S. Military Special Operators now use their unique skills to assist people after natural and man-made disasters. They perform high-risk extractions of orphans and the most vulnerable who are in imminent danger from the Russian invasion and subsequent fighting. They've also set up a food and supply distribution network. That's the Aerial Recovery Group. AmeriCares: They provide support for refugees and migrants and they have an an emergency response team in Poland to support health services for families affected by the escalating humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Their experts are coordinating large-scale shipments of medicine and relief supplies and mobilizing emergency medical teams to help in hospitals inside Ukraine. That's AmeriCares. International Rescue Committee: For nearly a century, this group has provided disaster relief around the world. That includesemergency aid, health and sanitation, and psychosocial support to refugees and migrants. On the ground in Poland, they're providing emergency support for families fleeing Ukraine, including economic assistance, survival supplies, and protection services. That's the International Rescue Committee. Medical Teams International: MTI provides life-saving medical care to people in crisis due to war or natural disasters. They provide care in frontline clinics, refugee camps, and remote villages. MTI says donations will allow them to coordinate with multiple partners to ship crucial medical supplies to Ukraine. That's Medical Teams International. Mission to Ukraine: They've been working in that country for 25 years serving women facing crisis pregnancies and children with disabilities each year and sharing the gospel. With the Russian invasion they're now providing food, medicine, diapers, heating oil, and emergency refugee resettlement and housing. That's Mission to Ukraine. Samaritan's Purse: Samaritan's Purse has a major presence in Ukraine. They've set up an emergency field hospital there with an operating room, intensive care unit and pharmacy. They've staffed the mobile facility with doctors and nurses who see 100 patients a day. They've also supplied 100 tons of relief materials, including medical supplies, hygiene kits, winter coats, blankets, and other items to help those fleeing the escalating conflict. That's Samaritan's Purse. Project C.U.R.E: The world's largest distributor of donated medical supplies, equipment, and services to doctors and nurses. In one week alone they shipped to Ukraine 10 tons of medical aid, including trauma supplies, airway kits, sutures, gloves, surgical gowns, and surgical supplies. That's Project C.U.R.E. World Relief: They work with churches to provide food, shelter, and supplies to those in the most vulnerable situations. They're helping to resettle Ukrainian refugees and providing assistance to those already in the U.S. who are desperately trying to reunite with their families. Many of these organizations are faith-based, providing not only basic human services, but also spreading the Gospel. Some are more keenly focused on sharing God's Word, such as theAmerican Bible Society. They've had a strong presence in Ukraine since the end of World War II. For the last decade, they've focused on expanding Bible-based trauma healing work in Ukraine. They're now working close to the frontlines helping families who've lost loved ones and are searching for truth and comfort during the ongoing conflict. There are many more worthy organizations providing desperately needed help in Ukraine. We just couldn't name them all. Again, you'll find a more complete listhere. It may seem like a world away. But experts say the crisis unfolding all along Ukraine's border will eventually find its way to Texas. And in this special release of Y'all-itics, we take you to Moldova, a small country to the southwest of Ukraine, that's also Europe's poorest. If the same number of Ukrainian refugees that have flooded Moldova, percentage-wise, suddenly crossed into Texas, it would be the equivalent of around three million people, with just under a million or so deciding to stay. In Moldova, we're joined by Sara Phillips with Medical Teams International, who's been on the ground for nearly two weeks assessing how her organization, which provides basic medical care, should respond to the growing crisis that has no end in sight. And Sara says it's not just war and bombs they're worried about now. It's also illness, from COVID to colds. There was even a recent polio outbreak in Ukraine and since the war completely halted the vaccination campaign underway to end it, there are fears that disease is coming across the border too. And Sara also tells us why many of these refugees could ultimately end up in Dallas, Texas.GuestSara Phillips, Medical Teams Internationalhttps://www.medicalteams.org/country/ukraine/

Fifty thousand civilians have died—so far. Military conflict in the Tigray region of Ethiopia has resulted in displacement, mass rape, looting, and starvation. According to BBC sources, “literally millions of people [are] beyond the reach of humanitarian aid.” NGOs are ready and waiting to assist Tigray people, but they don't have a way in due to government restrictions. CT reported on these tensions and the political circumstances surrounding them in November. At the time, a WorldVision staffer told CT, “...here, it is not just winning or losing an election. It's life or death: access to land, access to food … the stakes are so high.” Roger Sandberg, of Medical Teams International, and Dr. Andrew DeCort, on the ground with the Neighbor Love movement in Ethiopia, recommend several actions. 1) Learn about the rich history of Ethiopia to understand its current political situation. 2) Pray for our brothers and sisters in Ethiopia. 3) Advocate. Tell your government officials to apply pressure to the government of Ethiopia to open up a humanitarian corridor, so that aid can get through. 4) Donate. Grants that might normally be available when organizations have access to a region are currently off the table. In Uganda, nearly a half million people from surrounding war-torn countries have sought safety in refugee settlements. The U.S. organization, Medical Teams International, operates health clinics in Uganda to help the refugees and locals with their medical needs. But the slow, paper-based system impacts the time it takes to treat patients as well as identify outbreaks of diseases like malaria. Also, it can take up to a month to manually collect and send data from health clinics in Uganda to the United Nations. Two years ago, Medical Teams decided to find a solution to this problem. They partnered with skilled volunteers, people with specific expertise who are willing to share what they know, to build a technology solution to automate the process and help transform the way refugees in Uganda receive health care. In this episode, we spoke with two of the volunteers chosen for the project, Heidi Brown and Jason Dempsey, who both work in Cambia's IT department.
With National Volunteer Week fast approaching (April 10-16th), we brought in Maggie Creps to discuss the challenges and opportunities in creating a unifying volunteer experience. As Manager of Volunteer Engagement at Medical Teams International, Maggie is directly involved in the volunteer journey, transforming the way MDI inspires, engages and motivates its members.
