The first job of a writer is to actually write their book. The next is to promote it. But getting in front of a camera or microphone and talking to a live audience isn't as easy at it may sound, and authors who are used to having thousands of words in a book to lean on may need to come up with just a few minutes of sound bites to help them get their point across. In this episode of "Writer's Digest Presents," content editor Michael Woodson chats with media coach and author Paula Rizzo about why it's important for writers to learn to be media-savvy, the different kinds of media that can help them promote their work, and how to have every possible answer ready in their back pocket.
In publishing, we spend a lot of time talking about genre, and a lot of authors know exactly what genre they're interested in writing in. But what about writers who have story ideas that don't easily fit into any one genre category? Should they shift the story to better fit a marketing mold, or should they just keep writing and faith that their unique story will find the right home? In this episode of "Writer's Digest Presents," content editor Michael Woodson chats with author Hilary Leichter, author of Temporary and Terrace Story, about ignoring craft rules, not thinking about your readers, and when to ask yourself what you're afraid of.
Screenwriting is a completely different animal than novel writing—there are different rules, there are different ways to get feedback, there are different expectations...but understanding screenwriting can help you navigate your own stories whether or not you're interested in filmmaking. In the first episode of season four of the "Writer's Digest Presents" podcast, content editor Michael Woodson sits down with Script magazine's editor-in-chief Sadie Dean to help writers get started in screenwriting. Sometimes, our own personal family history where elements of it make for the perfect story—but what do you do if the history itself works best in a totally different era, or a dog makes more sense to be a cat, or winter works better than summer when it really happens? This is where personal history and historical fiction collide. In the final episode of "Writer's Digest Presents," editor-in-chief Amy Jones and content editor Michael Woodson chat with author Sharon Short about her new novel, Trouble Island, how she fictionalizes real events, her love of weather in fiction, and more.

More than half of what we see in the theaters or watch on TV are adapted from books, graphic novels, video games, and more. Which begs the question: What makes an adaptation good? Is it being 100% faithful to the source material? Is it making necessary updates to literary classics? Is it including the author in the adapting process? In this episode, WD's editor-in-chief Amy Jones and content editor Michael Woodson sit down for a chat with Script magazine's editor-in-chief Sadie Dean about what makes a good adaptation, what makes a bad one, and the times when the adaptation was better than the book.

How to write a dramedy is more than simply mixing jokes with the tear-jerking moments. Combining comedy and drama is a tight-rope act that, if done wrong, can lead to tonal disparity within your story. But done right and you'll have your readers going from crying to laughing (and crying laughing) page after page. Editor-in-chief Amy Jones and content editor Michael Woodson sit down with bestselling author Byron Lane (A Star Is Bored, Big Gay Wedding) to chat all about how to write a dramedy.
Do you know how to self-edit your novel? If your answer is "no," you're not alone. While creative writers know a thing or two about building worlds and imagination, self-editing our work—and editing in general—is an art form we don't spend enough time understanding. In this episode of "Writer's Digest Presents," content editor Michael Woodson sits down with professional editor, author, and instructor Tiffany Yates Martin to discuss self-editing, how to self-editing your novel, when to seek outside advice, and more.
On this special back-to-school episode of SPS, Pamela & Laurie discuss the recent Russell Brand controversy. Brand has been in the news lately, under some heat, as a result of public allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. We take this up in the context of the ongoing sex panic and the ongoing transformation of feminism after #metoo, which leads us to discuss the Barbie movie. On the second part of the episode, our members Evan and the current president of Platypus, Erin, sit down with Benjamin Studebaker, the author of the recently published book, The Chronic Crisis of American Democracy: The Way is Shut (2023). Studebaker explains that the crisis of American democracy is deeply embedded in the America economic system, and develops a theory of “legitimacy crisis”. They take this up in their interview and ask some questions about the current state of American politics as well as his formulations of the ends of a Left political movement. We hope you enjoy this expanded edition of SPS, if you like it, leave us a comment and maybe you'll find more of these longer episodes in the future. Writers: curious about how to combine genres? Want to know what it's like to incorporate elements of mystery, science fiction, espionage, and romance? Look no further than the curious mind of author Rob Hart. In this interview with Writer's Digest, editor-in-chief Amy Jones and content editor Michael Woodson sit down with Rob to discuss his newest novel, The Paradox Hotel, why combining genres means you get to break all the rules, and more.
AI has infiltrated the creative process, with ChatGPT and other platforms making writing "easier." But the sinister side of this technology has led artificial intelligence down the road of plagiarism, and even identity theft—stealing the likeness of an author and using their name to profit off of work they didn't actually write. Author and instructor Jane Friedman joins content editor Michael Woodson for a discussion about AI, about her recent experience with AI stealing her name to profit on work she didn't write, and what writers can do to safeguard themselves and their writing.
You ever have that experience reading a book where you think it's about one thing, and then slowly it starts to reveal that it's actually about something else? We call this "misdirection," a narrative device that allows writers to write the story they want to write while allowing an undercurrent of what the story is "actually about." In this conversation with editor-in-chief Amy Jones and content editor Michael Woodson sit down with author Lydia Kiesling about how to intentionally misdirect your readers, writing about climate change in realistic fiction, and her new novel Mobility, available in bookstores August 1.
In this episode Pamela and Laurie discuss the Trump indictment, DeSantis, and the conservative “resolution” to the crisis of neoliberalism through the Culture Wars. In our main segment, Platypus members from Vienna, Berlin, Melbourne and Chicago reflect on the Platypus panel, "A Century of Critical Theory: The Legacy of György Lukács,” (April 1st, 2023), the closing plenary of the 15th Platypus International Convention. The centenary marking the publication of his magnum opus, History and Class Consciousness: Studies in Marxist Dialectics (1923), offers the occasion to ask: What is the meaning of Lukács and HCC today? Over the last 100 years, various claims have been made of HCC. On the one hand, it is said to have inaugurated “Western Marxism” and set the foundation for the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School. On the other, people have accused it of giving philosophical justifications for terroristic or opportunistic tendencies within Marxism–Leninism. We asked our panelists to consider the following: What is the relationship between political practice and theory that Lukács articulated in the revolutionary period of 1919–1925, based on his close reading of Lenin and Luxemburg? What in his critique of reification and defense of Marxist orthodoxy did the later Lukács disavow? What can we make of Lukács's legacy today? How have we received his investigation and elaboration of the problematic of Marxism? What are the essential issues raised for our time? Michael Woodson's team is headed to the Elite Eight in Champaign, Illinois for the third straight year, and the head Bear joins the show to talk about the electric win over Stanford and preview this week's match against Tennessee. Woodson stays on board in the second segment to offer a unique perspective on what it's like to coach at a private, Baptist university in Baylor. From recruiting players worldwide to selling recruits on the team, Woodson breaks down how Baylor can out-recruit teams like Florida, Ohio State. TCU and Tennessee. Citing the university's commitment to excellence, Woodson says Dave Aranda, Nicki Collen and Scott Drew motivate his team to meet Baylor's championship standard. Lastly, Baylor football has landed its 10th commitment of the 2023 class via Dawson Pendergrass. Dawson, a Texas native, is a 3-star athlete who plays primarily running back and defensive back. He rushed for 2,000 yards and 25 scores as a junior last season. Will Dawson be an impact player moving forward for Aranda, Eric Mateos and Jeff Grimes? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! From Aijha Blackwell of Missouri to Dre Edwards of Kentucky to Jana Van Gytenbeek of Stanford, Nicki Collen is having a field day in the transfer portal for Baylor women's basketball. Losing NaLyssa Smith and Queen Egbo, Collen has had to replenish a roster that only had a handful of players to begin with. The team couldn't even scrimmage itself last season. Mike Neighbors, head coach at the University of Arkansas, joins to break down each player — all of which he has recruited or scouted. Neighbors hangs around to break down Collen's first year as a head coach at Baylor and how to gauge her overall success. After a season that included hosting the NCAA tournament and an appearance in the Big 12 championship game, has Collen shown that she is the right fit to replace the legendary Kim Mulkey? And the Baylor men's and women's tennis teams have punched their tickets to the postseason after their selection show was held this week. We hear from Michael Woodson of the No. 3 men's team and Joey Scrivano of the No. 26 women's team as they begin postseason play this weekend. The men host ACU while the women travel to College Station to meet Washington. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast On Baylor Bears Football & Basketball
Blake Shapen and Gerry Bohanon are in a classic battle to be the 2022 quarterback for Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears football team — and Shapen outplayed Bohanon in the Green and Gold game. Now, so what? Does that even matter? It's such a small sample size, are you really going to base the next starter off of one scrimmage? Of course not, but we simply saw Shapen play better on Saturday. That needs to be accounted for. Travis Roeder of SicEm365 joins the show to help break down how the quarterback battle has progressed, how it was displayed Saturday and what other positions stood out to Travis at the spring game. From Monaray Baldwin to Ben Simms and plenty of guys in between, the team had a very, very good Green and Gold game. Travis goes in-depth on why. And an inciteful show would not be complete without a little fun with Michael Woodson, the head men's tennis coach at Baylor, joining to round out the day. Woodson breaks down his team's Big 12 championship victory over No. 1 TCU on Saturday and how it impacts the team's seeding in the postseason. Woodson also talks about how the team rallied together even despite a loss from the previously undefeated Adrian Boitan. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! On this two-part episode of SPS, Pamela sits with Leila Mechoi, the co-host of Red Star Radio podcast. They reflect on the Left's reaction to the late trucker protest in Canada, and discuss the role of civil liberties in the organization of the working class, as well as what sort of missed political opportunity -- if any -- did the protest present. In the second part of the episode, Andreas and Berlin-based Platypus member, Tamas talked to Peter and Noemi, both members of Szikra, a leftist group in Hungary founded in 2019. They discuss the situation of the Hungarian Left with regards to developments within the international left over the past decade, as well as the next Hungarian parliamentary election in April of this year. They also take up the deeper history of the Left in Hungary and specific political challenges in the "post-socialist "countries of Eastern Europe today. On this episode of SPS, Sophia and Pamela sit down with Spencer L., founding member of Platypus and historian of imperialism, to discuss the Rittenhouse trial and the “Left's” response. They clear up the confusion around the Second Amendment among todays leftists, address the anti-racism of progressive liberals, and take up responses by Daniel Lazare (Weekly Worker) and the Bolshevik Tendency. In the second part of the episode, Andreas W. and Platypus Melbourne member, Ryan M., interview Sue Bolton (Socialist Alliance) on the protests against the Australian vaccine mandate, including the September attack on the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) offices. Union leadership was under attack by union members for their complicity with state measures, which prevented a return to work without vaccination. Andreas and Ryan ask, how should the left respond? Are these protests simply cannon fodder for the right? How should socialists understand this discontent in civil society? SEGMENT I Links >The “Left” on Rittenhouse Daniel Lazare, “Rittenhouse and White Backlash” in the Weekly Worker, issue 1373 (25 November 2021) https://weeklyworker.co.uk/worker/1373/rittenhouse-and-white-backlash/ “...The idea that good guys need guns to defend themselves against bad guys is asinine, since it is often far from clear in a shootout which is which. It is a determination that cannot be made individually on the spur of the moment, but can only be made deliberately and collectively, which is why democracy requires judges, courts and other such apparatus.” Milwaukee DSA Statement on Rittenhouse Verdict, (22 November 2021) https://milwaukee.dsawi.org/milwaukee-dsa-statement-on-rittenhouse-verdict/ “It is no coincidence that Rittenhouse wants to be a police officer when he grows up. The US injustice system was developed to enshrine white supremacy at the expense of those who work to undo it. As those in power continue to build upon the fascist foundations of our nation, it becomes ever-clearer that abolition of police and the carceral state at large is the only path forward.” Bolshevik Tendency, “Killer Rittenhouse Goes Free—Fascists Celebrate” https://bolsheviktendency.org/2021/11/27/killer-rittenhouse-goes-free-fascists-celebrate/ “Decent people do not recognize the “right” of fascists and their various ultra-rightist friends and associates to mobilize—nor do we recognize their right to “defend” themselves against attempts to disarm them, which is what Rittenhouse's victims were seeking to do. While the latter's tactics were obviously seriously deficient, their intent was commendable.” >Education on Liberalism & Constitutional Rights Ira Glasser, Free Speech and the ACLU, an interview by Glenn Greenwald https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGI4fc_VB7c Platypus Public Fora Series: The Second Amendment and the Left Platypus Review 110 (October 2018): https://platypus1917.org/2018/10/01/the-second-amendment-and-the-left/ June 9, 2018, University of Houston: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaaAqAm6oAw SEGMENT II Links Sue Bolton's article in Green Left, Socialist Alliance's publication: https://www.greenleft.org.au/content/behind-attack-cfmeu-office The other Green Left article Andreas quotes, by Dave Kellaway: https://www.greenleft.org.au/content/italy-fascists-attack-biggest-trade-union-confederation Socialist Alliance's website: https://socialist-alliance.org/ Hosted by Sophia F., Pamela N. and Andreas W., with original tracks by Tamas Vilaghy, and editing assistance by Michael Woodson and Tamas Vilaghy.
