DALLAS (AURN News) — When Erika Howard struggled to find athletic clothing that allowed her to maintain her modesty while coaching and working out, she didn't just layer up and sweat through it — she created her own solution. Howard, a former track, volleyball and basketball coach, launched Two and Nine in 2022, a modest athletic apparel company designed for women who want coverage without sacrificing performance or style. "We were modest women who loved to work out, who loved to play sports and ride bikes and all of that, but we were finding it very difficult to find apparel that we were comfortable in and could do all things in," Howard said. "The Lord gave me a dream and told me to start this business. And I was obedient." The brand specializes in athletic skirts with built-in shorts, featuring functional details like pockets and drawstrings that allow for comfortable movement during various activities. Howard, who coached at Omaha North High School in Nebraska and Barnett Junior High in Texas, said her experiences trying to coach in traditional modest clothing highlighted the market gap. "I either had to pay people to make my clothing more modest or add layers upon layers and be extremely uncomfortable while sweating," Howard said. Since launching on Feb. 22, 2022 — a date Howard notes was significant as "2/22/22" or "Two-sday" — the company has expanded beyond her initial expectations. "I initially thought that it would be for my friends and myself, but little did I know that there were people all over the country that would like my designs," Howard said. "The growth has been exponential. So far, we've shipped to probably 18 different states... and Canada." Howard aims to challenge misconceptions about modest clothing, which she says is often viewed as restrictive or uncomfortable. "I think people think that when you say modest, you're completely covered from head to toe, that it is restricting, that it is uncomfortable," Howard said. "Modesty is for me, it's for the wearer. It's for the person who wants to feel comfortable and does not feel comfortable showing all their body." The entrepreneur emphasizes that modest doesn't mean unstylish. "It doesn't always have to be a black skirt... You can still have a style and be more athletic, or somebody who enjoys athleisure wear," she said. Her company motto — "You can do anything in a skirt" — reflects her vision that modest clothing should be functional and versatile. Howard sees her business filling a crucial need as mainstream athletic wear trends increasingly feature crop tops and form-fitting styles. "Now as I go to the store, everything is a crop top, everything has a stomach out, everything is tight," Howard said. "Maybe I don't want to show every single part of my leg." Two and Nine has expanded beyond athletic wear into modest scrubs and is developing athleisure options and swimwear. To aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly Black women, Howard offers straightforward advice: "Just go for it. You may not know exactly what the next step is, but if you have the encouragement to start the business and you have the idea, just go for it." "Follow your dreams," she added, "because you don't know where God's going to take you once you step out on faith and you do what he's calling you to do." Learn more about your ad choices. Modest fashion has been steadily gaining more global recognition over the past decade, with longer hemlines spotted on the runway. It's now estimated to be worth around $300 billion. But modest fashion isn't just religious coverings, loose dresses, or even your grandmother's cardigan. At Modest Fashion Week in Istanbul there was everything from faux fur, to gold silk and platform heels. Megan Lawton, a BBC reporter in Toronto, has been looking into how modest fashion has shifted outside the leading markets in Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to the US and Australia. She's spoken to the founders of Reflective - an online marketplace for modest clothes. We also hear from Nawal Sari, a Muslim model and content creator in Australia, about how the modest-friendly options have shifted over the years - and how authentic some marketing of the clothing is.Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld WhatsApp: +44 0330 12 33 22 6 Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk Presenter: Hannah Gelbart Producers: Emily Horler, Mora Morrison and Benita Barden Editor: Verity Wilde
As modest fashion week starts in Istanbul, we look at the growth of this area of the fashion industry.Long considered a faith-based choice, it is gaining in popularity, proven by the modest-friendly options that many leading brands now offer. We hear the thoughts of retailers and designers on why more women are choosing to dress modestly. And content creator Maha Gondal explains how she's bringing her take on modest fashion to her thousands of followers. Plus we look at what can go wrong when brands try to cash in on what they see as a lucrative market. On this week's episode, I spoke to the super stylish, absolutely wonderful, and very insightful, Hafsa Lodi about her book, Modesty: A Fashion Paradox. Now, I know absolutely nothing about fashion, or what it means to be fashionable. I'm typically seen wearing clashing colours, outfits just thrown together and odd socks. :) However, I am really intrigued by the way the modest fashion industry around the world, and especially in the UK, has grown over the last 10 years. I'm particularly interested in whether something so inward and holding moral weight, 'modesty', can go hand-in-hand with something that it concerned with outward appearance, 'fashion'. Hafsa explores this question and more in her book, and we talk about SO many things in this episode. Modesty: A Fashion Paradox is published by Neem Tree Books. Hafsa Lodi is an American journalist who has been covering fashion in the Middle East for the past decade. She was born in New York City, and at the age of 14 relocated to the United Arab Emirates with her family, where she attended Dubai American Academy while interning after school with one of the region's leading publishing houses, ITP.After completing her undergraduate studies at the Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto, Hafsa moved to London for a year, where she earned her master's degree in Islamic Law at the School of Oriental and African Studies. The relationships between religion, culture and modernity have always fascinated Hafsa, who covered topics like honour killings in Canada's South Asian communities, the use of DNA evidence in rape cases in Pakistan and the industrialization of the Holy city of Makkah, before turning to the fashion journalism beat. While living in Dubai, Hafsa has written for The National newspaper, Luxury Magazine, Mojeh Magazine, Velvet Magazine, Savoir Flair and Vogue India, in addition to working as an online fashion editor for one of the Middle East's largest luxury retailers, Boutique 1. She is a freelance stylist, and also has a part-time clothing line, creating whimsical maxi-cardigans and kaftans during Ramadan, and statement hand-embellished sweatshirts for the winter seasons. If you've enjoyed this episode, please do consider following, rating and reviewing as it really helps more people find the show. Modest fashion is a way of dressing that respects specific clothing requirements for reasons of faith and also personal preference. The market for modest fashion is huge – and it's only getting bigger, with both designers and influencers keen to get in on the action. FRANCE 24 went to check out the second edition of Paris Modest Fashion Week.
Uncover Western fashion trends with three of the best fashion influencers as they keep it real, speak life, and share their stories to success. Designers have the power to create the future. Fatima Njoya, a writer for Vogue and Glamour magazines in Germany, leads this moving conversation between three designers who have walked very different paths: Orsola de Castro (Fashion Revolution, Estethica), Matthew Needham (Matthew Needham, Estethica), and Meriem Lebdiri (Council of Modest Fashion, Meriem Lebdiri). The four reflect on their careers, identifying critical moments of realization that led them to work towards changing the fashion industry. As a successor to de Castro's [Fashion Open Studio](https://www.fashionopenstudio.com/), [Estethica](https://www.estethica.com/) is a new collective of designers who have united around designing fashion for positive impact, putting their individual values into a concrete outlet, and fostering an international sustainable fashion community. Hosts Max and Magdalena describe the power of a future-focused mindset, and what it means to have these designers represented at 202030 – The Berlin Fashion Summit. Modesty has been a subject of spirited controversy through the ages. The reasons may be due to the constantly changing modesty attitudes which may vary from place to place, from age to age, from one section of society to another, and even from one time of day to another. Changing fashions add further interest and controversy to modesty. With each change in fashion, interest and attention are directed to different parts of the body, thus creating changes in modesty attitudes. Modesty can be manifested through clothing. Modesty assumes different forms in different countries, it varies from places, age and even in the time of the day and role the person is assuming. Asiya Rafiq, hailing from Kashmir (India) with an Educational Background in Psychology, Certified in ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) from Dubai is the First Indian Modest Fashion Designer (Specialized in Adaptive Wear) now staying in UAE.

I'll also share the #mission and #vision of my #modestfashionbrand, Fashion Cults. Stay tuned
