Check out Dr. Castagnini Podcast at:https://behindthebitepodcast.com/course/In her own words:There was really never a question that I was going to spend my life trying to help people who were in pain or suffering feel or get better. I just somehow knew it was something I was going to do.Perhaps others saw that in me as well. When I was in high school, my friend's dad saw an ad in a local paper for teen advice columnists, he told my friend I should apply because everyone was always coming to me for advice. So, out came the hefty typewriter, and off went my application. Before I knew it, I was writing a teen advice column. My Education....The University of California Santa Cruz was where I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in mental health. Starting with my first psychology course, I just "knew".Initially, I thought I wanted to pursue medical school and become a psychiatrist. So, while I majored in psychology, I also took the courses required for medical school. I even took the MCAT's. But, then something hit me as I was knee-deep into med school applications: I truly loved all of my psychology courses. I loved experiencing actual clinical work during an upper-division course. This led me to do something completely unexpected: I switched gears and applied only to graduate programs in clinical psychology. After two years at UCSC, and one year studying on exchange at the University of British Columbia, I earned my BA in Psychology, graduating with honors.2 years later, I was inducted into Psi Chi, the National Honors Society for Psychology, as a Lifetime Member, and earned my MA in Clinical Psychology, with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University.I completed my doctoral studies at the University of Southern California, where I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology. My Career....After graduate school, I was a postdoctoral resident at Kaiser Permanente. I spent the following 15 years as a staff psychologist in the adult psychiatry department while also running my own small private practice one day a week. While at Kaiser, I was the lead eating disorder specialist in my department. As the years went on, I realized that I wanted to continue doing clinical work. But, I also wanted the opportunity to do something different. Something that had a bigger, wider reach. So, I left Kaiser in October of 2019 to open my practice full-time.And Here We Are...I love that I have an opportunity to start something truly meaningful and personally near and dear to my heart. This podcast is for those of you out there who are: struggling with disordered eating....a full blown eating disorder....yo-yo dieting and struggling with weight.....body image issues.....feel like you can only be happy if you lose weight or look a certain way....or are just plain feeling trapped in a life where you can't make peace with food or your body.I was there. For years. And when I was going through my struggles, podcasts just did not exist. I wish they had. I needed to know that other people were going through what I was. I needed to hear about what types of help are out there..even help besides therapy. I needed to hear other people just talk about it. To know I was not alone. To hear that recovery is possible.I have worked with enough patients over the years to know that once you get information....once you gain the knowledge and awareness....things can start to change. But you need to hear it first. So, I am trying to get this information heard. I am trying to help from beyond the couch in this next chapter. I can only do so much from behind 4 walls---time to break them down and help more people now.I welcome you to join me and listen.I welcome you with open arms and an open ear. This podcast is for you...tell me what you want to know and hear.I'm also listening. To your health, welcome! Writers direct years of effort to language's possibilities, so when you listen to a podcast devoted to writers speaking (which is this one) you can expect an appropriate range of possibility. You might hear something unforgettable—something that changes how you think, or reinforces a hunch you had, or confuses you in the most liberating way. On The Writers Institute, we seek those moments in the New York State Writers Institute's overbrimming audio archives, guided by writers in 2022 who join that archival exploration. In this series premiere, Susan Choi—author of novels including Trust Exercise and My Education—listens with host Adam Colman to literary giants Grace Paley and Raymond Carver. Along the way, she talks about writers in the world, off the page. “One thing I really like about writers,” Choi says, is that “writers are really curious about other people . . . I'm constantly amazed by how often I meet people who have no curiosity at all, about anything. It's really disturbing to me, actually.” On this episode: Susan Choi (in conversation with Adam Colman). Books: Trust Exercise and My Education. Raymond Carver (from the archives). Books: Cathedral and Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? Grace Paley (from the archives). Books: Enormous Changes at the Last Minute and Later the Same Day. Jamaica Kincaid (from the archives). Books: Lucy and A Small Place. William Kennedy (in conversation with Adam Colman). I did an Instagram Live with Susan Choi, which was so much fun. Susan's first novel, The Foreign Student, won the Asian-American Literary Award for Fiction. Her second novel, American Woman, was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize. Her third novel, A Person of Interest, was a finalist for the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award. Her fifth novel, Trust Exercise, came out in April 2019 and is the one we talked about the most. It won the 2019 National Book Award for Fiction. Susan and I also talked about quarantine hair secrets, our agreement that the world students live in today is more complicated than the one we grew up in, and that different secrets to writing a book sometimes feel just like learning to parent different children.

This is a phrase that has been paramount in my ability to learn and grow at speed whilst accomplishing success in multiple businesses. Move fast and Break Things means to not sweat every minute detail and to have a stab at something even if you fall flat on your face and it ends up being a royal disaster. Fearing putting a step in the wrong direction is paralyzing to growth and moving swiftly whilst being aware that is can all blow up in your face is all part of the entrepreneurs journey. MF&BT is actually a phrase I borrowed from Facebooks own Mark Zuckerberg and it seems this ethos has stood him in good stead so we should all take a leaf out of his book and press forward with ideas at speed and without fear of egg on ones face. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Thanks so much for being here. ❤️ P Golden Nuggets from this episode: [02:49] “One of the most important facets of me being able to have a successful business or businesses is, I move fast!” [03:21] “MY Education or evidence only gets in 65% of the way the rest of it the 35% which I feel is the hardest, 35% of making any decision especially when it comes to changing direction is instinct.” [04:24] “Perfection is the death of Industry.” [07:14] “The amount of business owners that I have spoken to that have had all these great ideas and strategies and techniques and it never happens, is way more than hit the shipping date!” [08:28] “the only commodity we have is time and if I don't try something because I'm afraid of what other people think, I have betrayed myself and taking a withdrawal out of my bank of days which is limited." [08:56] “I would much rather run a thousand miles an hour into a brick wall then wonder “am I doing the right thing by not doing the right thing”?” External Links for this episode: Masters of Scale Seth Godin Thanks very much for listening...
Erik Martin revisits a story he told in 2013 at TedX, Redmond WA, titled "How World of Warcraft Saved Me and My Education." Erik has since held posts at the US Department of Education, the Whitehouse Office of Science and Technology (OST) and is now Senior Manager for Education Programs at game engine, Unity. He credits much of his success to experiences he had working his way up to leading an 800 member guild in the popular massively multiplayer online roleplaying game, World of Warcraft. This environment became key to his recovery from depression and anorexia nervosa as a young teenager. If you like this episode, subscribe to No Such Thing on iTunes, Stitcher, and Google Play. This week we're continuing our Summer of Selfies theme by discussing confessional essays, including one by Tom Chiarella, a long-time writer and editor for Esquire. In an essay called "My Education," he detailed the sexual abuse he experienced at the hand of a Catholic-school teacher, while also wrestling with his own ambivalence about the benefits of writing such an essay. Americans, Chiarella says, feel the need to talk about their traumas, but is that always necessary, or even desirable?
Host Paige Maguire brings you new music from Bear Claw, The Black & White Years, The Boxing Lesson, Collin Herring, The Great Nostalgic, My Education and Love Collector.
