This week on One Song, we're sharing another music podcast that LUXXURY and Diallo both love. It's called Switched On Pop, and it's about the making and meaning of popular music, hosted by musicologist Nate Sloan and songwriter Charlie Harding. The episode we're sharing focuses on the fact that the first half of 2024 has been for the “pop girlie.” It seems like every major artist who's dominated the discourse this year has been a woman, ostensibly making music about what it means to be a woman. There's Camila Cabello's "Chanel no.5,” Lorde and Charli XCX working out the labyrinth of emotions that come with female friendship on the “Girl, so confusing” remix, and Sabrina Carpenter's ode to the female ego, “Please Please Please." On this episode, Charlie, Nate, and Reanna – with some insight from journalist Ilana Kaplan – unpack these tracks at length, exploring what these artists are saying about femininity, and by extension, themselves.

There's many things to love about Los Angeles: low-rider cars, roadside taco stands, and, come awards season, the omnipresent “For Your Consideration” billboard. Nobody knows this better than lifelong L.A. resident Lorely Rodriguez, also known as Empress Of. The indie-pop darling's latest record, aptly titled For Your Consideration, is her take on what it means to have your full self considered, in all of its guises. The almost genreless record is so wildly catchy and remarkable in scope (all of the percussion on the record is actually Rodriguez's voice) that Switched On Pop host Nate Sloan and producer Reanna Cruz had to consider For Your Consideration with Empress Of herself, live in person, in the City of Angels. Pop culture is full of fictional bands singing songs purpose-made to capture a moment, a sound. This music doesn't organically emerge from a scene or genre, hoping to find an audience. Instead it fulfills an assignment: it needs to be 1960s folk music, 1970s guitar rock, 80s hair metal, 90s gangsta rap, and on and on. In this episode, we're going to use ‘Stereophonic,' which just opened on Broadway, as a kind of case study in how to construct songs like this. The playwright David Adjmi and his collaborator, Will Butler formerly of the band Arcade Fire, will walk us through how they did it. How they made music that needs to capture the past, but wants to speak to the present; that has to work dramatically but hopes to stand on its own; that must be plausible, but aspires to be something even more.  The band in Stereophonic includes Sarah Pidgeon, Tom Pecinka, Juliana Canfield, Will Brill, and Chris Stack. Stereophonic is now playing on Broadway—and the cast album will be out May 10. "Strumming my pain with his fingers... Singing my life with his words..." Killing Me Softly with His Song is a song about the pleasure and embarrassment of being seen. The feeling that someone has reached into your deepest, most private feelings, and laid them bare: "I felt he'd found my letters, and read each one out loud". It's a song about a singer, and about what music can do. And it's a love song that feels at once happy and sad. The song was a huge hit in two different generations. It won Grammy Awards for The Fugees in 1997 and for Roberta Flack in 1974. Ray Padgett, author of Cover Me: The Stories Behind the Greatest Cover Songs of All Time, unfolds the layers of the song's history as a famous cover of a famous cover. The musicologist Nate Sloan explores what the song does harmonically, oscillating between major and minor chords to create a sense of uncertainty and longing. And Lori Lieberman tells the story of the Don McLean concert that inspired her lyrics for the song, that she was the first to record as a young singer-songwriter in 1972. It's a song that transports Tiff Murray back to the hot New York summer of 1996, when the Fugees version blared from every car radio and shopfront. For her it was the soundtrack to falling in love while far from home. It's also a love song for Julie Daley, but now with a sharp edge. Dr Robin Boylorn listened to the Fugees version as a self-conscious teenager and felt a flush of recognition; Ben heard it the Christmas he first came to the UK from South Africa, played by a busker early one morning in Covent Garden as the first snow he'd ever seen began to fall; and Perminder Khatkar has treasured the song since it played in the delivery room during the birth of her first child. There was something different about Justin Bieber's performance of his hit song “Peaches” at the 2022 Grammy Awards. The recorded version, which spent thirty weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, opens with a full-blast chorus featuring driving percussion and ringing guitars. But performing live, the song's instrumentation was stripped down, with Bieber alone at a grand piano, crooning into the mic. For a lighthearted song (“I get my peaches down in Georgia”), this intimate performance sounded overly serious on first listen. Slowly, the band built up, adding guest verses from Daniel Caesar and Giveon between seven repetitions of the chorus. Each time the chorus returned, the band got louder, the music pointing upward until a high-flying synth solo closed the song.  It may have been a surprising arrangement of Bieber's hit, but it was the same approach heard elsewhere in the ceremony. The same sort of slow climb was heard earlier in the night when Maverick City Music, the first Christian group to perform at the Grammys in twenty years, gave an uplifting performance of their song “Jireh” off their award winning album Old Church Basement. In the church tradition, the slow build is a common feature, beginning as a quiet prayer that expands outward as more voices join in. Naomi Raine, one of the group's seven members, describes it as “this common and underlying structure” that feels “supernatural and spiritual.”  While that familiar structure pervades the Christian music landscape, Maverick City Music has a greater purpose in their music. “We are called to blur the lines as far as what is Christian, what is Gospel, those two have been segregated for too long,” says the group's Chandler Moore. The expansiveness of the music is represented in Maverick City Music's diverse makeup. The seven core members invite dozens of songwriters from countless backgrounds to songwriting camps to explore the traditions constraining boundaries. Having only started releasing music in 2019, Maverick City Music has released over seventeen combined LPs & EPs in multiple genres including Worship, Gospel, R&B, and Latin Pop. Consistent across all those records is that transcendent slow build.  After exploring the discography of Maverick City Music, one starts to hear this song form all over pop music. In the case of Bieber, who is both friends with the group and has a religious background, his previous hit songs like “Holy” and “Anyone” also unfold in a slow build. The reworked “Peaches” Bieber performed at the Grammys even makes sense given the chorus's final line “I get my life right from the source.” There has been a long history of stylistic exchange between the religious and secular world. There would be no Rock & Roll without Gospel, and Christian Contemporary draws its sounds from the 60s folk movement. Today, songs made for worship share qualities with modern power ballads, the former elevating the spirit, the latter coaxing our emotions. On the latest episode of Switched On Pop hosts Charlie Harding and Nate Sloan speak with Maverick City Music and listen back to songs both religious and secular that lift us up. Songs Discussed Justin Bieber - Peaches (feat. Daniel Ceasar & Giveon), Holy (feat. Charlie Harding and Nate Sloan of the podcast Switched on Pop join DJ Louie to talk one of pop's great agitators, Charli XCX. Charlie, Nate and Louie parse out the dueling instincts in Charli's career between her chart-topping ambitions and her impulse to disrupt the boundaries of pop. They situate her debut album True Romance amongst a slew of early ‘10s records treading the line between indie rock and pure pop while tracking what makes her first hit as a writer and feature, Icona Pop's EDM masterpiece “I Love It”, such a quintessential example of Charli's strengths as a songwriter, performer and student of popular music. They then ponder why Charli's second album Sucker underperformed commercially while she simultaneously topped the charts with her A Fault in Our Stars OST single “Boom Clap” and her feature on Iggy Azalea's “Fancy”, discuss what makes Charli such a great fit in the world of PC Music, how her established pop persona affected the aesthetics of hyperpop, what makes her ongoing collaboration with A.G. Cook and others from his collective singular, and where her new single “Good Ones” signals she may go next. Finally, Charlie, Nate and Louie rank Charli XCX in the official pop pantheon. Love it or hate it, every summer has a song you just can't escape from. It's playing out of every car window, at every bodega, in every club and in your head on repeat. “We are all unknowingly entering into a contract to declare one song as a song of the summer” says Hanif. But in a time when there's less communal listening than ever before, will there be just one song that defines these months of 2021? This week on the show, we're analyzing the song of the summer from all angles with writer Wesley Morris and the Switched on Pop co-hosts Nate Sloan and Charlie Harding. For the playlist of songs curated for this episode, visit https://bit.ly/oos-contract/Music In This Week's Episode/Right Back, KhalidWarm Blood, Carly Rae JepsenBrat Pack, The Rocket SummerHeart Skipped a Beat, The xxHow Will I know, Whitney HoustonGet In The Sun, Joan Armatrading1 Thing, Amerie/Show Notes/ Nate Sloan and Charlie Harding are the hosts of the Switched on Pop podcast. Listen to Hanif's extended playlist of 68 ‘songs for summer nights' here. Wesley Morris is the host of the podcast Still Processing. Nate and Charlie are the hosts of the podcast Switched on Pop.Hanif says the emblematic songs of summer of 2016 are One Dance by Drake feat. Wiz Kid and Kyla, Work From Home by Fifth Harmony, and This is What You Came For by Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris Wesley says Blue by Joni Mitchell and Spinnin' by Jerry Jam and Terry Lewis feat. Mary J. Blige, are the nostalgic songs people are listening to today. Standout songs of summer according to Wesley and Hanif include Bootylicious by Destiny's Child, Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen, Trap Queen by Fetty Wap, Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber, De Museo by Bad Bunny, Need To Know by Doja Cat and Bad Habits by Ed Sheeran. Charlie and Nate argue that Sympathy For The Devil by The Rolling Stones was a precedent for Lorde's Solar Power./Credits/ This show is produced by work by work: Scott Newman, Jemma Rose Brown, Babette Thomas, Mayari Sherina Ong and by Hanif Abdurraqib. Pop music surrounds us—in our cars, over supermarket speakers, even when we are laid out at the dentist—but how often do we really hear what’s playing? Musicologist Nate Sloan and songwriter Charlie Harding brought us a masterclass in pop music, illuminating the essential musical concepts behind two decades of chart-topping songs. With insight from their book Switched on Pop, based on their eponymous podcast, Sloan and Harding gave us the tools we need to interpret our modern soundtrack. They revealed musical insights such as how a single melodic motif follows Taylor Swift through every genre that she samples, André 3000 uses metric manipulation to get listeners to “shake it like a Polaroid picture,” or Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee create harmonic ambiguity in “Despacito” that mirrors the patterns of global migration. Join Sloan and Harding and learn to engage with the timeless concepts within the music of today, and start listening to familiar tracks in new ways. Presented by Town Hall Seattle. When Lori Lieberman was 19 years old, she went to a concert of a singer she didn't know, and ended up writing a poem that would become one of the greatest cover songs of all time. This week we are going to look at the art of covering in popular music, and how that art marked the conversion from a classical model of musical aesthetics to a contemporary one. Popular music in the modern era is metaphysically complex due to the fact that its listeners make very fine-grained judgments about artistic merit and quality. We are going to talk about the stories behind some of the most iconic cover songs in the rock era, analyze an iconic song with Switched on Pop podcast host Nate Sloan, and transform all of it into the philosophy of music. Guests include Ray Padgett, Nate Sloan, Cristyn Magnus, and P.D. Magnus. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
