From multiple New York Times bestselling author Tom Clavin comes the thrilling true story of the most infamous hangout for bandits, thieves and murderers of all time―and the lawmen tasked with rooting them out. Robbers Roost, Brown's Hole, and Hole-in-the-Wall were three hideouts that collectively were known to outlaws as “Bandit Heaven.” During the 1880s and ‘90s these remote locations in Wyoming and Utah harbored hundreds of train and bank robbers, horse and cattle thieves, the occasional killer, and anyone else with a price on his head. Clavin's Bandit Heaven: The Hole-in-the-Wall Gangs and the Final Chapter of the Wild West (St. Martin's Press, 2024) is the entertaining story of these tumultuous times and the colorful characters who rode the Outlaw Trail through the frigid mountain passes and throat-parching deserts that connected the three hideouts―well-guarded enclaves no sensible lawman would enter. There are the “star” residents like gregarious Butch Cassidy and his mostly silent sidekick the Sundance Kid, and an array of fascinating supporting players like the cold-blooded Kid Curry, and “Black Jack” Ketchum (who had the dubious distinction of being decapitated during a hanging), among others. Most of the hard-riding action takes place in the mid- to late-1890s when Bandit Heaven came to be one of the few safe places left as the law closed in on the dwindling number of active outlaws. Most were dead by the beginning of the 20th century, gunned down by a galvanized law-enforcement system seeking rewards and glory. Ultimately, only Cassidy and Sundance escaped . . . to meet their fate 6000 miles away, becoming legends when they died in a fusillade of lead. Bandit Heaven is a thrilling read, filled with action, indelible characters, and some poignance for the true end of the Wild West outlaw. Tom Clavin is a bestselling author of 25 nonfiction books on American and military history, sports, and entertainment. His writing career began in journalism, as a roving reporter for The New York Times for 15 years as well as a contributor to national magazines including Smithsonian, Men's Journal, Parade, Reader's Digest, and Sports Illustrated. Along the way, he was awarded numerous prizes by the Society of Professional Journalists and National Newspaper Association. Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University. Hugh Turley is the co-author with David Martin of the first most thoroughly researched books about the assassination of the internationally revered American Catholic monk, pioneer in interfaith dialogue and anti-war and human rights activist Father Thomas Merton. Merton was also a prolific writer and poet, mostly on spiritual subjects-- perhaps the most important Catholic author in the 20th century. For over a decade Hugh has been following the clues leading to the murder of Father Merton 56 years ago in Bangkok Thailand on December 10th 1968 -- the same year as the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Merton's friend and fellow civil rights activist Martin Luther King. His research has resulted in two publications "The Martyrdom of Thomas Merton" in 2018 and a follow up book last year "Thomas Merton's Betrayers: The case against Abbot James Fox and author John Howard Griffin". He also had a major investigative role in the publication of "The Murder of Vince Foster: America's Would-Be Dreyfus Affair". Hugh is a volunteer columnist for the Hyattsville Life and Times, a winner of the National Newspaper Association award for best serious column, small circulation, and his day job is as a professional stage magician in the Washington DC area. The National Newspaper Association (NNA) has long been a key advocate for rural newspapers, championing their importance as trusted sources of information in communities across the United States. In this episode of E&P Reports, Mike Blinder sat down with Martha Diaz Aszkenazy, the newly elected chair of the NNA, and Brett Wesner, the past chairman, to discuss the association's recent collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the “Risk Less. Do More” campaign. This initiative, aimed at promoting public health messages about COVID-19, RSV, and the flu, is not only a public health victory but also a significant financial win for rural newspapers. By including these newspapers in their paid advertising strategy, HHS is injecting crucial revenue into these publications, helping to sustain their operations and support the communities they serve. This partnership underscores the vital role that local newspapers play in public health outreach while providing much-needed financial support to ensure their long-term sustainability. In 2005 John Garrett started Community Impact Newspaper from the game room of his home with his wife and best friend, Jennifer. They began with the creation of the Pflugerville, Texas edition. Today that one paper is part of a growing empire of over 30 monthly printed and 24/7 digital hyperlocal community news platforms that serves four Texas metropolitan areas. In 2016, printing and mailing over 2.5-million papers required John to open a 36,000-square-foot printing facility housing a $10 million press operation that works twenty-four hours a day. Over the years, Community Impact has now received 106 awards for writing and design from the National Newspaper Association. It was also named to Inc. Magazine's top 5000 fastest-growing companies for seven consecutive years. In this 161st edition of “E&P Reports,” we go one-on-one with John Garrett, CEO and founder of Community Impact, a community newspaper publishing company that mails over 2.5-million editions monthly to over 60 Texas communities while employing over 200 journalists, salespeople and support staff. E&P Publisher Mike Blinder and contributing writer Victoria Holmes ask Garett how he maintains growth and profitability in a news ecosystem that has compressed and shrunk its commitment to people and print.

Tom Clavin’s popular Western histories have delighted readers and earned critical accolades. Like many, Clavin is fascinated by the larger-than-life personalities and enduring myths that surround the Wild West. His histories take on those myths and legends, separating fact from fiction to get at what really happened. In Dodge City, he told the true story of how a depraved cattle town was tamed by two young lawmen. In Wild Bill, he provided a definitive biography of the first lawman of the Wild West. In his next book, TOMBSTONE: The Earp Brothers, Doc Holliday, and the Vendetta Ride from Hell (St. Martin’s Press) he takes readers to Tombstone, Arizona to examine the infamous gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the “vendetta ride” that made Earp a legend. Together, these three books form the Frontier Lawmen Trilogy and deepen the understanding of the country’s formative years when new social structures were shaping a new way of life. Clavin’s trilogy draws a line from the post-Civil War years where the prototype of the frontier lawman was established by Wild Bill Hickok to the mid-late 1870s when Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson cleaned up Dodge City as peace officers, to Tombstone, where the 1881 gunfight can be seen as the last gasp of violent lawlessness in a closing frontier as “civilization” took hold in the West. Today, the distinction between the good guys and the bad guys seems clear but the truth was far murkier. This is especially true of the men who faced off in Tombstone. In TOMBSTONE, Clavin uses existing scholarship and his own extensive research to tell the story of the most famous shootout in American frontier history. The fight sprang forth from a tense, hot summer. Cattle rustlers had been terrorizing the back country of Mexico and selling the livestock they stole to corrupt ranchers. The Mexican government built forts along the border to try to thwart American outlaws, while Arizona citizens became increasingly agitated. Rustlers, who became known as the cow-boys, began to kill each other as well as innocent citizens. That October, tensions boiled over with Ike and Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank McLaury, and Billy Claiborne confronting the Tombstone marshal, Virgil Earp, and the suddenly deputized Wyatt and Morgan Earp and shotgun-toting Doc Holliday. Clavin peers behind decades of legend surrounding the story of Tombstone to reveal the true story of the drama and violence that made it famous. TOMBSTONE also digs deep into the vendetta ride that followed the tragic gunfight, when Wyatt and Warren Earp, along with Holliday went vigilante to track down the likes of Johnny Ringo, Curly Bill Brocius, and other cowboys who had cowardly gunned down his brothers. That “vendetta ride” would make the myth of Wyatt Earp complete and punctuate the struggle for power in the American frontier’s last boom town. Updating the old notion that the Earp myth is the American Iliad, the author is at his best when he delineates those fraught spasms of violence. Buffs of the Old West will enjoy Clavin's careful research and vivid writing.”—Kirkus Reviews “Clavin briskly sketches dozens of historical figures and gamely interrogates primary and secondary sources to separate fact from fiction. This animated account entertains”—Publishers Weekly “Clavin shows that there is more to the story of Tombstone than the Earps and the well-known gunfight. Readers who enjoyed the first two books in this popular history trilogy will look forward to this excellent and fitting conclusion.” —Library Journal www.tomclavin.com
