Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week's episode is like the jetway bridging me between my two locations this week. This SHOW AND WE ARE NOT here to talk you into or out of anything! It is to answer questions we are asked all the time.   It is to describe how we made the journey from Ministry to non-monogamy. Nearly ALL of the teaching on sex is in the New Testament (this is important and we'll reference it later!) Most church people know Bible history, but do not really know much else that was going on at the time. The Epistles were LETTERS written to churches. They had NO idea they would become scripture. The Bible was canonized over 1000 years.  Bible vs Teaching  Sex is rampant in the Old Testament Bible Multiple Wives Judah sleeping with his daughter-in-law, thinking she was a prostitute King David - 7 wives King Solomon - 700 wives and 300 concubines Hosea and Gomer    Christianity and Sex [1] Judaism was, essentially, pretty free about sex Jesus said something: basically monogamy only and no divorce, both were new and likely shocking to Jews, Romans and Greeks Casual Observation - points to: Christianity poised between Jewish family life and Greek easygoing acceptance of male homosexuality, with Roman culture a den of decadence and orgies. That contrast became a disapproving Christian cliché: Christians loudly condemned Greek and Roman immorality. HOWEVER, that is a logical fallacy!! Plato Plato taught self-control and decorum thoughts of purity and spirit vs flesh came FROM Plato, a Greek philosopher, who said the spirit was the real world and the physical was the temporary!!  Plato was almost 400 years before Jesus! Aristotle Plato's student, taught a lot about Natural vs Unnatural sexual practices Plato believed male semen contained a whole embryo, and the female acted as a host only This meant, any male ejaculation that wasn't for procreation, (into a woman) was murder! Ergo, homosexuality and masturbation were tantamount to MURDER! Monks, Monastery's, and Celibacy Didn't exist prior to the early BC/AD time in scripture (other than THE temple built by the Kings) This idea likely came from India, via Syrian Traders (the great traders of the day) India was home to Buddhism and Hinduism - these introduced the idea of celibacy (not mentioned in the Bible or Christianity previously), until Jesus and Paul (Paul was a Greek speaking Jew raised in a province of Syria Revolt against Celibacy The revolt against Celibacy came from the protestant movement, started in the lat 1690's Prior, all clergy were required to be celibate (as Roman Catholics today).   Our Belief: Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  Sex and Culture   Japan and Sex  Sex is not necessarily a part of love Completely separate and apart from that love, is sex. Sexual desires are considered an animal all their own, and desire is often separated from the concept of love and home life. As a result, sex is often more experimental and, when it is happening, it's used to satiate one's sexual curiosities, fixations and fantasies. Japanese married couples essentially stop having sex after they have kids and 47.2 per cent of married men and women in Japan are reported to not have sex with each other at all. Additionally, there are tens of thousands of legally registered sex industry shops in Japan, sugar babying is commonplace, and being a ‘hostess' is one of the most sought-after jobs for young Japanese girls.
