Researchers at the University of Virginia have investigated children's reports of memories of previous lives for nearly sixty years, studying more than 2,500 cases from around the world. In many cases, a deceased individual has been identified whose life matches the details given by the child. Common features in the cases include a child talking about a past life at a very early age, behaviors that appear connected to that life such as phobias related to the mode of death, and sometimes even birthmarks or birth defects that correspond to wounds the previous person suffered. Our conversation will highlight Dr. Tucker's research over the past 20 years, including details of some of his most interesting cases. His work provides persuasive evidence that some children do, in fact, possess memories of previous lives and we will look at how this phenomenon changes our understanding of consciousness and what it means to be human. Dr. Jim Tucker is a child psychiatrist at the University of Virginia, where he is the Bonner-Lowry Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. He is the Director of UVA's Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), and he is continuing the work of Ian Stevenson with children who report memories of previous lives

The Jataka Tales are stories of the Previous Lives of the Buddha. In these stories, Buddha teaches us with examples of karma activity — conduct. In this Jataka story,  Silanisamsa Jataka: A Good Friend (Jataka190) — lusciously narrated by Eemil Sulva — the Bodhisattva (as he was known in previous lives) saves himself and his friend by relying on the Triple Gem — the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. He saves his friend by transferring (or dedicating) the merit of his life to his friend.Ends with beautiful chanting of Shakyamuni Buddha's Mantra by the amazing Yoko Dharma with stunning images of the Buddha.Silanisamsa Jataka: A Good Friend (Jataka 190)  The Buddha told this story at Jetavana Monastery about a pious lay follower. One evening, when this faithful disciple came to the bank of the Aciravati River on his way to Jetavana to hear the Buddha, there was no boat at the landing stage. The ferrymen had pulled their boats onto the far shore and had gone themselves to hear the Buddha. The disciple's mind was so full of delightful thoughts of the Buddha, however, that even though he walked into the river, his feet did not sink below the surface and he walked across the water as if he were on dry land. When, however, he noticed the waves on reaching the middle of the river, his ecstasy subsided and his feet began to sink. But as soon as he again focused his mind on the qualities of the Buddha, his feet rose and he was able to continue walking joyously over the water. When he arrived at Jetavana, he paid his respects to the Master and took a seat on one side."Good layman," the Buddha said, addressing the disciple, "I hope you had no mishap on your way.""Venerable sir," the disciple replied, "while coming here, I was so absorbed in thoughts of the Buddha that, when I came to the river, I was able to walk across it as though it were solid.""My friend," the Blessed One said, "you're not the only one who has been protected in this way. In olden days pious laymen were shipwrecked in mid-ocean and saved themselves by remembering the virtues of the Buddha." At the man's request, the Buddha told this story of the past.Long, long ago, at the time of the Buddha Kassapa, a lay disciple who had already entered the path booked passage on a ship along with one of his friends, a rich barber. The barber's wife asked this disciple to look after her husband... continues...Support the show

Children with past life memories. This week I am talking to Dr Jim Tucker about his book 'Before: Children's Memories of Previous Lives'. A fully updated 2-in-1 edition, with a new introduction by the author, combining Dr. Jim B. Tucker's bestselling books about children who remember past lives―Return to Life and Life Before Life. These two books contain accounts of Jim B. Tucker's experiences with a number of extraordinary children with memories of past lives. Building on the international research started by his University of Virginia colleague Ian Stevenson, Tucker's work has been lauded by the likes of Larry Dossey and Deepak Chopra. Tucker takes a serious-minded approach to each case. His goal is to determine what happened--what the child has said, how the parents have reacted, whether the child's statements match the life of a particular deceased person, and whether the child could have learned such information through normal means. In the end, his findings provide persuasive evidence that some children do, in fact, possess memories of previous lives. Thought-provoking and captivating, the stories in Before urge readers, skeptics, and supporters alike to think about life, death, and reincarnation and to reflect on their own consciousness and spirituality. BioJIM B. TUCKER, M.D. is Bonner-Lowry Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He is Director of the UVA Division of Perceptual Studies, where he is continuing the work of Dr. Ian Stevenson with children who report memories of previous lives. A board-certified child psychiatrist, Dr. Tucker worked with Dr. Stevenson for several years before taking over the research upon Dr. Stevenson's retirement in 2002. Dr. Tucker was born and raised in North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA degree in psychology in 1982, followed by a Medical Degree four years later. He then received training in general psychiatry and child psychiatry at the University of Virginia. After he completed his training, he stayed in Charlottesville and began a successful private practice in psychiatry. Dr. Tucker, who was raised Southern Baptist, had never seriously considered the possibility of past lives before reading one of Dr. Stevenson's book. After learning about the work, he became intrigued both by the children's reports of past-life memories and by the prospect of studying them using an objective, scientific approach. He contacted the Division and in 1999 began working there half-time. A year later, he gave up his private practice completely to work at the university. He has now published two books and numerous papers in scientific journals. He has spoken before both scientific and general audiences and has made a number of television appearances, including Good Morning America, Larry King Live, and CBS Sunday Morning. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1250781779?tag=macmillan-20 https://www.jimbtucker.com/ https://teespring.com/en-GB/stores/the-past-lives-podcast https://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast

We often think the mind is a creation of the brain, or that the mind and the brain are one and the same. But when the brain is offline for a number of reasons, like illness or injury, the mind can sometimes still be very active. Cases of near-death experiences have been reported since ancient times, and are described by 10% of people whose hearts stop. The medical world has generally ignored these “near-death experiences,” dismissing them as “tricks of the brain” or wishful thinking. In this week's mini-episode, Dhru sits down with Dr. Bruce Greyson and Dr. Jim Tucker to talk about some of their most dramatic accounts of near-death experiences and stories of reincarnation from their patients. They share how these experiences can reveal a lot about dying and what might come after, and how they also reveal just as much about what makes a life meaningful and fulfilling.Dr. Bruce Greyson is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. He was a co-founder and President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies, and Editor of the Journal of Near-Death Studies. His award-winning research led him to become a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and to be invited by the Dalai Lama to participate in a dialogue between Western scientists and Buddhist monks in India. His book, AFTER, is the culmination of almost half a century of scientific research.Dr. Jim Tucker is the Director of the UVA Division of Perceptual Studies, where he is continuing the work of Ian Stevenson with children who report memories of previous lives. He is the author of Before: Children's Memories of Previous Lives, a new 2-in-1 edition of his books Life Before Life and Return to Life. Do some children possess the ability to recall memories that fall beyond their own living experience? If so, where do these memories come from, and could they be related to phenomena recognized by various cultures throughout history such as reincarnation, which involves the idea of the rebirth of a soul into a new body?  Joining us to discuss scientific efforts to evaluate such claims and understand their possible relationship to the enduring mysteries of the human mind and consciousness is Jim B. Tucker, Ph.D., a child psychologist with the University of Virginia Division of Perceptual Studies, and author of the book Before: Children's Memories of Previous Lives. We examine the controversial notion that some children may have recollections about life events lived by others on this week's edition of The Micah Hanks Program. Sometimes, we’re led down a path that might surprise us. Our calling in life might end up being completely different than what we expected—it might even challenge our previous beliefs. The concept of reincarnation elicits skepticism in many people. Today’s guest on The Dhru Purohit Podcast wasn’t quite a believer himself, until multiple mind-blowing accounts kept showing up in his work. Dr. Jim Tucker is the Bonner-Lowry Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. Money or titles aren’t terrible, but you’ll react differently to money or titles in your new being. The life you create with your new being will bring you joy with little need of the 3D fear, of not being or having enough. You’ll also interact with others, as do small children, from the heart instead of fear of others because of color, sexual preference, money, title, profession, or whatever fear-based parameters you established in 3D. Speaker: Jim Tucker, Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, School of Medicine Researchers at the University of Virginia, beginning with Ian Stevenson, have investigated children's reports of memories of previous lives for the past fifty years, studying more than 2,500 cases from around the world. Common features in the cases include a child talking about a past life at a very early age, behaviors that appear connected to that life such as phobias related to the mode of death, and sometimes birthmarks or birth defects that correspond to wounds the previous person suffered. Dr. Jim Tucker will review the research and the details of recent American cases.
