Welcome to the latest episode of WAB Podcast Season 5! In this episode, we explored the world of Nature of Science. Joining us were two Grade 10 students, Claire and Kabir, along with their teacher, Chris Hayden. Together, they took us on a journey through this project-based science course that allows students to dive deep into their passions, nurture critical thinking, sharpen their skills, and foster a love for scientific inquiry that goes beyond the classroom.  Chris introduced that Nature of Science (NOS) allows students to choose and explore an area of science they're passionate about, and it covers foundational knowledge and key inquiry skills aligned with Middle Years Program (MYP) science objectives. He emphasized that learning science is not about memorizing facts, it should give students the tools they need to think like true scientists, including asking questions, solving problems, and making a real-world impact.   Grade 10 student Kabir is a humanities enthusiast, who took NOS as a chance to bridge his love for economics with science. His project focused on the economic impacts of air pollution, a topic that allowed him to analyze data and uncover how environmental factors influenced global economies. He expressed he never thought he could enjoy science this much. With his teacher's help, he was able to process a large amount of data that he had collected for the project, boosting his analytical skills and making him more prepared for the Diploma Programme (DP) Economics.   Claire from Grade 10 is very into biology, and she spent her time working on a project that combined her scientific passion with a desire to address societal issues. Inspired by conversations with some local women about the menstruation stigma in their daily lives, Claire designed an innovative project to detect gynecological diseases in a more convenient way. By using simulations, she explored how antibodies and antigens interact, aiming to create a diagnostic tool that could be integrated into sanitary products. Claire reflected this experience facilitates her DP studies and beyond, and more importantly, shows her how science can truly impact lives.  Want to hear more about how our Grade 10 students are using NOS to sharpen their scientific skills and make a real difference in the world? Tune in to this episode!

Jayanta Bhattacharya is a Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. In October of 2020, he co-authored the Great Barrington Declaration, which eschewed lockdowns due to the harm they inflict on children and young adults, especially compared to the minor risk those demographics face from the virus itself. Despite his credentials, Dr. Bhattacharya learned--after Elon Musk gave him access to the Twitter Files--that he had been placed on a "trends blacklist." This censorship was the result of demands the White House, and quite possibly Dr. Fauci, had placed on social media companies to suppress speech that questioned the government's messaging on Covid-19, prompting Dr. Bhattacharya to become a plaintiff in Missouri v. Biden, which wound up in the Supreme Court. On this episode, he and Jenin discuss the Supreme Court's recent decision in the case, and the problematic implications for free speech and scientific inquiry.Help support Courting Controversy on Patreon and gain access to exclusive content: https://www.patreon.com/JeninYounesSubscribe to the Illusion of Consensus Podcast to follow Jay's work: https://www.illusionconsensus.com/podcastFollow Jay on X: https://x.com/DrJBhattacharyaFollow Jenin on X: https://x.com/JeninYounesEsqFollow Jenin on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeninyounesesq/Watch Courting Controversy on YouTube: www.youtube.com/courtingcontroversywithjeninWatch Courting Controversy on Rumble: https://rumble.com/user/JeninYounesEsqListen to Courting Controversy on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/courting-controversy-with-jenin-younes/id1754874846Listen to Courting Controversy on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4FwAmhckuL9cmsdj7ZkyBS

Exploring the Genius: A Review of ‘Leonardo Da Vinci' by Walter IsaacsonChapter 1:Summary of Book Leonardo Da VinciWalter Isaacson's biography "Leonardo Da Vinci" delves into the life of one of history's greatest creative geniuses. Published in 2017, the book meticulously explores Leonardo's life through his notebooks, paintings, and inventions, illuminating his insatiable curiosity and inventive imagination.Leonardo Da Vinci, born in 1452 in Vinci, Italy, had a wide range of interests that spanned various fields, including art, science, engineering, anatomy, and nature. Isaacson uses da Vinci's famous notebooks, which contain over 7,200 pages of drawings and notes, to provide readers with insights into the mind of the genius. Clearly, da Vinci pursued knowledge for its own sake, and his lack of formal education did not hinder his relentless quest for understanding. The biography also discusses many of Leonardo's masterpieces, like "The Last Supper" and the "Mona Lisa," analyzing the innovative techniques used and the human emotions captured that continue to fascinate people to this day. Isaacson highlights Leonardo's obsessive attention to detail, his transformative thoughts on human anatomy, which he discovered through dissection, and his futuristic inventions, some of which were not realized during his lifetime.Isaacson also examines the personal aspects of da Vinci's life, including his vegetarianism, left-handedness, and probable homosexuality, suggesting how his nature influenced his art and scientific studies. Despite his numerous accomplishments, Leonardo is portrayed as human, experiencing failures, like his unfinished projects and his notorious procrastination. The biography doesn't just glorify da Vinci's successes but also illustrates how his tendency to question received knowledge, untangle complex phenomena, and navigate unknown intellectual territories made him a true "Renaissance man" who remains relevant in today's creative and scientific realms.Isaacson's narrative is engaging and educational, shedding light not only on Leonardo's genius but also on how he can serve as an exemplar of blended art and science for future generations.Chapter 2:The Theme of Book Leonardo Da VinciWalter Isaacson's biography "Leonardo Da Vinci" meticulously chronicles the life of the Italian polymath, providing insights into his extraordinary talents as an artist, inventor, scientist, and thinker. The book, which draws on thousands of pages from Leonardo's notebooks and extensive research by Isaacson, not only presents key events in da Vinci's life but also explores his character and thought processes, revealing how his mind worked and what we can learn from him. Here are some key points regarding the plot, character development, and themes in the book: Key Plot Points1. Early Life and Apprenticeship: The book begins with Leonardo's birth in 1452 in Vinci, an illegitimate child in a small town near Florence. His early talent in the arts leads to an apprenticeship under the renowned artist Verrocchio in Florence.2. Scientific Inquiry and Journals: Throughout his life, Leonardo filled numerous notebooks with sketches, scientific diagrams, and his thoughts on topics from anatomy to flight.4. Stints in Rome and France: The biography also covers his time in Rome under the patronage of Giuliano de' Medici and his final years in France, invited by King Francis I.5. Final Years and Death: Leonardo's life concludes in 1519 in Amboise, France, where he continued to work until his death. Differentiating Scientific Inquiry and Politics with Heather Douglas

Over the past two decades, our view of the ideals for science in society has changed. Discussions of the roles for values in science and changes in the views on the responsibilities in science have shifted the understanding of science from ideally value-free to properly value-laden. This shift, however, seems to remove a key difference between science and politics, as now both science and politics are value-laden, and disputes in both can arise from value disagreements. If science is not value-free (nor should it be), what differentiates science from politics? Heather Douglas lays out norms for scientific inquiry that make it distinct in practice from politics and argues that understanding and defending these differences help to protect science from abuses of power.Heather Douglas is a philosopher of science who works on the relationships among science, values, and democratic publics. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Michigan State University, Senior Visiting Fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh (2021-2022), and a AAAS fellow. She is the author of "Science, Policy, and the Value-Free Ideal" (2009), "The Rightful Place of Science: Science, Values, and Democracy" (2021), and editor of the book series "Science, Values, and the Public" for University of Pittsburgh Press.Justyna Bandola-Gill, a Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, offers a response. Join neuroscientist Maria Kozhevnikov as she shares cutting-edge research on the nature of consciousness, and expands the scientific inquiry into post-mindfulness studies. Mindfulness studies, which dominate the field, are great, but there is so much more. Dr. Kozhevnikov is a rare blend of scientist-practitioner, who has spent years studying advanced meditators in Bhutan and Nepal. Her ground-breaking work in deity yoga (generation stage meditation) and tummo (the inner heat practices) is revealing the untapped wonders of the mind from a scientific lens, and stretching research into uncharted territories. What is the promise and peril of conducting studies on practices that were previously kept secret? What is the “cash value” of this work, and how can it benefit the general public, or a meditator? Is the mind spread out across the body, or limited to the brain? Does mentation even expand beyond the body? Maria shares her work and experience with lucid dreaming (along with tips for increasing lucidity), and discusses the importance of “flow states” (the Zone) and their relationship to states of meditative absorption (samadhi). What happens to the default mode network, and the salience network, which are both central to the ego, in these deep states? Why does the Vajrayana (Tantra) engage flow states, while the Hinayana (Theravada) does not? Maria shares how her professional work has informed and impacted her practice of Vajrayana Buddhism, and then concludes with what lies ahead in her exciting arena of scientific inquiry. Dr. Kozhevnikov is a pioneering voice truly on the edge of mind.

“New ideas always come from the fringe in science. So we have to encourage new ideas to come up. We can't have science become a religion where there are dogmas.” In this episode, filmed at Hillsdale College's Censorship of Science conference, we sit down with Dr. Martin Kulldorff, an epidemiologist, biostatistician, and former professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He's a co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration that argued for “focused protection” of the vulnerable instead of lockdowns. Kulldorff breaks down what he sees as the “power hubs” controlling policy, research funding, and career advancement in the scientific world. “Dr. Fauci sort of sits on the biggest chunk of infectious disease research money in the world. So it takes a bit of guts to contradict his view on pandemic strategy.” Kulldorff is the scientific director at the Brownstone Institute and a founding fellow at Hillsdale College's Academy for Science and Freedom. “I'm very concerned that 400 years of enlightenment or scientific progress may come to an end. And I think we have to work very hard to avoid that.” Follow EpochTV on social media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EpochTVus Twitter: https://twitter.com/EpochTVus Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/EpochTV Gettr: https://gettr.com/user/epochtv Gab: https://gab.com/EpochTV Telegram: https://t.me/EpochTV

Why is Fauci interested in extending mask-wearing beyond the pandemic? Again, we're seeing a lot of superstition from the "experts" propagated by the media and a lot less scientific inquiry. Why isn't nutritional science being addressed at all? Why do state-submitted institutions like Harvard push us towards harmful dietary practices? Why is YouTube pushing videos that are using the pandemic to sell the 'equity' propaganda? Visit A Neighbor's Choice at aneighborschoice.com

How does psychology's response to the replication crisis fit into a broader history of science? In this episode we discuss a paper by sociologists Jeremy Freese and David Peterson that takes on that question. Are "epistemic activists" in psychology redefining what it means to be objective in science? Does a focus on reforming incentives mean we view scientists as economic actors for whom motives and dispositions are irrelevant? Does the last decade's growth in meta-research mean that meta-analysis is the new arbiter of objectivity? Does a shift to a systems perspective on science have parallels in other systemic analyses of institutions? Plus: We answer a letter about whether raising new concerns when you're reviewing a revision is obligatory, a jerk move, or both.   Links: Freese & Peterson (2018). For the first time in history, the human species has the technology to destroy itself. But having developed that power, humans are also able to leave Earth and voyage into the vastness of space. After millions of years of evolution, we’ve arrived at the point where we can settle other worlds and begin the process of becoming multi-planetary. How did we get here? What does the future hold for us? Divided into four accessible sections, Beyond the Known examines major periods of discovery and rediscovery, from Classical Times, when Phoenicians, Persians and Greeks ventured forth; to The Age of European Exploration, which saw colonies sprout on nearly continent; to The Era of Scientific Inquiry, when researchers developed brand new tools for mapping and traveling farther; to Our Spacefaring Future, which unveils plans currently underway for settling other planets and, eventually, traveling to the stars. A Mission Manager at SpaceX with a light, engaging voice, Andrew Rader is at the forefront of space exploration. As a gifted historian, Rader, who has won global acclaim for his stunning breadth of knowledge, is singularly positioned to reveal the story of human exploration that is also the story of scientific achievement. Told with an infectious zeal for traveling beyond the known, Beyond the Knownilluminates how very human it is to emerge from the cave and walk toward an infinitely expanding horizon. Rader and Shermer also discuss: the human nature to explore: adaptation or spandrel? what the Greeks and Romans knew about the world that was lost for centuries how dark were the Dark Ages for exploration? the economic and religious drivers of early exploration the political and practical drivers of 20th century exploration Mars direct or to the moon first? how to terraform Mars how to get people to the moons of the outer planets how to get people to the stars are we living in a simulation? should we be worried about A.I.? Andrew Rader is a Mission Manager at SpaceX. He holds a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from MIT specializing in long-duration spaceflight. In 2013, he won the Discovery Channel’s competitive television series Canada’s Greatest Know-It-All. He also co-hosts the weekly podcast Spellbound, which covers topics from science to economics to history and psychology. Beyond the Known is Rader’s first book for adults. There is often resistance to the claim from feminist philosophy that knowledge is somehow "socially constructed", but what does that actually mean and is it really all that radical? Sometimes, our social situations or experiences dictate the kind of evidence we are likely to encounter and put us in a better position than others to know what's going on around us. Other times, these experiences can impact what we consider to be good evidence or what a community considers to be justified in the first place. Or maybe here's a simpler way to frame some of these ideas: when it comes to COVID-19 for example, who do you think knows best about what health care workers really need to do their jobs, CEOs or those on the front lines? Links and Resources * Natalie Alana Ashton (https://nataliealanaashton.weebly.com/) * Robin McKenna (https://robinmckenna.weebly.com/) * The paper (https://philpapers.org/archive/ASHSFE.pdf) * Fear of Knowledge: Against Relativism and Constructivism by Paul Boghossian (https://www.oxfordscholarship.com/view/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199287185.001.0001/acprof-9780199287185) * Feminist Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (https://plato.stanford.edu/archives/spr2017/entries/feminism-epistemology/) * Uses of value judgments in science: A general argument, with lessons from a case study of feminist research on divorce by Elizabeth Anderson (https://www.jstor.org/stable/3810929) * Nancy Hartsock (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Hartsock) * Science as Social Knowledge: Values and Objectivity in Scientific Inquiry by Helen Longino (https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Science_as_Social_Knowledge.html?id=S8fIbD19BisC) * Whose Science? Whose Knowledge? Thinking from Women’s Lives by Sandra Harding (http://cscs.res.in/dataarchive/textfiles/textfile.2009-11-24.4430260926/file) Paper Quotes Our aim is not so much to defend these feminist epistemologies – although we think they can be defended – but rather to urge that those who defend the classical conception of knowledge have focused on the wrong target. The kind of social constructivism present in (some) feminist epistemologies is much more modest and plausible than the radical social constructivist view Boghossian considers and rejects as incoherent. So, it’s not accurate to say that feminist epistemologists allow social factors to trump truth. They don’t dogmatically assert that justication lines up with beliefs which complement feminist aims, but instead show that certain of these feminism-complementing beliefs t with the evidence as well as, or better than, other beliefs, and that these have other (epistemic) benets to boot. Turin apart at the seams... The deep dive on the Shroud of Turin continues in part 2! Skeptics of the Shroud of Turin's authenticity bring up a number of points on why it's not actually the burial sheet of Jesus. Flora takes a look at the arguments presented against the shroud's authenticity as well as questions that popped up along the way. Could this thing actually be 2,000 years old? Is it the holy relic many people think it is? Science on the dating, image formation, and theories on who made it are addressed. David also explains his thoughts and opinions on the shroud's authenticity, based on his research into this topic. Is the scientific value of objectivity in conflict with the social justice commitment to diversity? In her latest book, Objectivity and Diversity: A New Logic of Scientific Inquiry (University of Chicago Press, 2015), Sandra Harding (Education and Gender Studies, UCLA) argues not only that objectivity and diversity need not be in conflict, but that good research ought to be committed to both values at the same time. The book draws on a rich array of scholarship, spanning from 20th century philosophy of science to contemporary studies in indigenous and postcolonial philosophy and activism. It is an intricate study of the ways in which objectivity, positivism, and secularism are all deeply intertwined with their social contexts and historical moments. The book ultimately advocates a science that is both responsive to a methodological requirement for strong objectivity, and originates in local communities. Host: Adam Isaak This October-on Halloween weekend-the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry is holding a conference: CSICon. It's the latest in a line of CSI skeptics' conferences going back to what is likely the first skeptics' conference ever held, a CSICOP (CSI) conference back in 1983. This episode of Point of Inquiry revolves around CSICon. It features interviews with Barry Karr, Jim Underdown, and Debbie Goddard. Barry Karr is the Executive Director of CSI and Skeptical Inquirer magazine. He was at that first conference in 1983 and he's the driving force behind upcoming CSICon. Barry talks about how trends in skepticism have changed throughout the years, what skeptics talked (and worried) about then, what they focus on now, and where they should go from here. Jim Underdown is Executive Director of CFI LA, Chair and Founder of the Independent Investigations Group (IIG), and lead singer and songwriter for The Heathens, an "all-star, all-atheist, all-skeptic, band from Los Angeles." Jim explains how the band got started, what their music is all about, and where we can hear them play. He also talks about the IIG, their work, and what they're planning to do at CSICon. Debbie Goddard is Coordinator of the CFI On Campus program and Director of African Americans for Humanism—and more importantly she does the date stamp at the beginning of Point of Inquiry episodes. Debbie is speaking on a panel at CSICon called "Grassroots Outreach and Activism". She talks about skeptical outreach and activism—and why it's important, diversity in the skeptical movement, and how you can get involved.

In this session Alan gives a short explanation on the modern neurocentric view which sustains that mental events are either equal to the brain, emergent properties of the brain or mere functions of it. He encourages us to observe mental events with an empiric–centric view, a spirit of inquiry and first person experience. We then meditated on settling the mind in its natural state with a special emphasis on observing carefully the space from which mental events arise, take place and dissolve back.

In recent history there have been huge public debates about the truth of theories that are widely supported by scientific inquiry. Evolution, the connection between cigarette smoking and cancer, and climate change due to human activity have all been subject to denial by a large segment of society even in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence. Part of the doubt can be attributed to misrepresentation of the science by vested interests. However, a large part of doubt can also be attributed to a lack of understanding of, and trust in, scientific process. Bryson Brown will argue that science has lot to teach us about successful inquiry. A little modesty, a little curiosity and an open but critical mind are all we need to learn a lot about the world, including some surprising and beautiful truths. But to appreciate them properly, we need to understand what makes scientific evidence so convincing. Will human society be better served with this knowledge? Speakers: Bryson Brown, PhD Bryson Brown earned his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985. His thesis was entitled "Science in Conflict". His academic positions have included Universities in Houston, Halifax, Melbourne and Lethbridge where he has taught since 1986. Research interests are focused on History and Philosophical Science. His latest book is entitled "Truth and Probability, Essays in Honour of Hugues Leblanc” (2006). Moderator: Klaus Jericho Klaus is a Research Scientist retired from Health Canada into new inquiries.
