We speak with Dr. Kim Penberthy today who joined us from the University of Virginia. Kim wears many hats. She is a professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She is also a board certified clinical psychologist and conducts research, teaches, and provides clinical care at UVA in psychiatry and the cancer center. She also studies and researches after death communication. She lived on a farm in a house that witnessed Civil War strife, with her mother a nurse and her father a would-be farmer surgeon. Exposed to life and death on a farm, she began at an early age asking herself and her parents metaphysical questions – long before she became a clinician and research scientist. We hear about her life changing story at the beach and fascinating surgical table stories heard from her aging father. We learn about her pursuit in researching after death communications from those who lose loved ones and how this research may help develop more wholistic therapeutic approaches to grieving. In the realm of healing and personal growth, the subject of spiritual awakening often emerges as a complex theme, merging both the psychological and the transcendental. In our latest episode, we host Jessica Corneille, MSc, a Research Psychologist with a focus on the enigmatic field of spiritually transformative experiences (STEs). Jessica shares her mission to bridge science and spirituality, urging a shift in mainstream psychology to embrace spiritually transformative experiences as a vital part of our humanity. Through her fascinating insights and research, she describes these experiences as profound moments that often unveil a transcendent reality. Jessica's personal narrative sheds light on her deep commitment to this field, recounting her own unexpected awakening which inspired her academic pursuits. We discuss unexpected catalysts for spiritual awakening such as intense psychological turmoil and trauma, revealing how such spontaneous experiences often arise amidst life's most challenging moments, and the nuances between awakenings that occur spontaneously, those catalyzed by psychedelics, and those nurtured through practices like yoga and meditation. Learn how cultural and religious frameworks impact the interpretation of awakening experiences, and the societal taboos surrounding these phenomena. We also discuss the challenges of introducing the scientific framework to validate and understand such experiences that have historically been marginalized or pathologized. Finally, Jessica stresses the value of community after an awakening experience to assist with integration. With her research, Jessica aims to unite the divide between science and spirituality, highlighting how psychological frameworks can adapt to encompass these significant human experiences.Jessica Corneille, a Ph.D. Candidate in Neurophenomenology at University of Cambridge, has a Master's Degree in Psychology from the University of Greenwich. She has presented her work at several academic conferences, including with the British Psychological Society, and has published articles for various publications including the Psychedelic Society, as well as a chapter in a new book that explores spiritual awakenings among members of the scientific community. Jessica is dedicated to helping individuals come to the realization of their highest human potential.Liked what you heard? Help us reach more people! Episode 262: Lost on the Slopes - Lessons Beyond the Mountain: Interview Nick ShawWelcome to the Love Your Story podcast. Today's show takes us into the story of the death of a 9-year-old boy after a ski accident at Big Sky in Montana. The tragedy, as you would expect, brought his parent's to their knees, on a path none of us want to walk. But Nick Shaw - today's guest - sought meaning as the life-line to hold to as he moved forward, and part of his healing process involved putting it down in writing, sharing the lessons he learned from his son. Stay tuned as he shares his story and as we discuss his book: My Teacher, My Son: Lessons on Life, Loss and Love.Nick Shaw, William's father, an accomplished executive coach, and the author of My Teacher, My Son, joins us today to share his story and the things he's learned along the way.Nick, welcome to the show.I wanted to read a quick review of your book:Kelly McGonigal, PhD, Research Psychologist at Stanford University writes:“It seems impossible that a book about unimaginable grief could offer so much hope, yet that is the gift of My Teach, My Son. With breath taking honesty, Nick Shaw shows how love, joy and continued connection co-exist with loss, change and challenge. The courage of Nick's self-reflection empowers each of us to find a way forward. A truly heart empowering read.”Very high praise.Tune into the audio program to hear answers to the following discussion questions:I know your story - I finished your book last week - but of course none of the listeners know who you are yet, so can we please start with your story? Tell us about your family and about that day.In dealing with this devastating loss, you chose to look for lessons. What have been the greatest lessons you have learned? In your book you say:“I took a six-month leave of absence from work to bewith Susie and Kai and to try to make sense of everything. This pause gaveme the time and space to reflect and ask, “Is this the way I want to go onliving my life?” While the answer is important, I found that taking the timeto ask the question is more important.” TELL ME ABOUT THIS. I LOVE THE QUESTION.As your healing progresses and a year later you and Susan have your third son, you say, In another section of the book,“ I had to be able to hold both my despair and my happiness at the same time. I had to accept that I could be happy and sad at the same time. I could revel in the delight of holding mynewborn son and at the same time be devastated by the loss of my oldest son. I could delight in sharing new and exciting experiences with Kai and at the same time be shattered by the fact that I will never be able to share those same experiences with William. I had to stop letting one feeling diminish the other; I made room for both feelings to coexist.I feel like this is a healthy mindset that allows room for the complexity of the emotional journey. Talk to us about this idea... When we are going through something traumatic, how do we not let the emotion and trauma just take over? How do we maintain our ability to choose mindset? To connect with Nick or get a copy of his book:www.meetnickshaw.comLinkedIn: Nick Shaw

There was quite a reaction to our last session with Dr Gregory Smith, the guy who faced extraordinary trauma, turned his back on society, walked into a forest and stayed there for 10 years. Over the four seasons of The Mojo Sessions, there have been some definite themes appear. The guys at Doublestar, the production team behind The Mojo Sessions, suggested we do a Megamix of five trauma-related conversations back to back as a holiday superset. It's a long-form episode containing five conversations in all. We start with Iris Gardner, the wife of former Navy Seal Commander-in-Chief, Jason Gardner. Iris had a brutal upbringing, living in a house with a sexual predator who was a friend of the family. Iris is brave, humble, and out to share her story so that we can benefit from her learnings. Starts: 00:07:50 Then we meet Preethaji, who runs the O & O Academy in India. Preethaji has such a simplistic way of demonstrating how many of us, through our thoughts and actions, live in a world of suffering. This conversation shows how we go from a suffering state into a beautiful state. I've interviewed Preethaji a few times, and I find her approach to life and her philosophy a huge advantage. Starts 01:49:15 Sarah Woodhouse is a research psychologist who specialises in trauma. We talk about trauma and traumatic experiences. What Dr Sarah wrote about in her book "You're Not Broken" is that many people who are suffering from trauma or a traumatic experience say that they feel broken. Sarah is fantastic. This conversation sets up how we can reframe trauma and traumatic experiences. Starts 03:01:00 I first heard Dr Bruce Perry in a conversation with Oprah on 'Oprah Soul Sessions'. At that time, Oprah said that her conversation with Bruce Perry was one of the most important she had ever had. Oprah realised that rather than exploring what was 'wrong with her', the better question was 'what happened to her?'. Anyone who knows me or has heard me speak in the last number of years will know that I think Dr Bruce Perry's book (written with Oprah) entitled "What Happened To You", is a most valuable resource, as what happened to you quite often is anchored down in a backstory. Starts - 04:15:07 The lovely Yemi Penn spoke to us about rewriting our story. Your past does not equal your future. By embracing and acknowledging your past and rewriting that narrative, we can change it to how it can benefit today. Yemi is the author of the book "Did You Get The Memo", which is about changing that backstory. Starts 05:27:37 Listen to all five Megamixes back to back or break them up on several days as you go to and from the office or away on a road trip. These five conversations form the first in a Megamix series that will centre on one particular topic each time, which, for this Megamix, is trauma. One thing that occurred to me when we were putting this together was that when you know somebody who is struggling, perhaps experiencing a challenging time of their life, or facing trauma or a dramatic experience, I think this Megamix is gold—five opinion leaders who each have an amazing story, philosophies and content to share. If you know somebody and think they can benefit, shoot them the link to this Megamix on trauma. THE ORIGINAL SESSION INFO EP 109: Iris Gardner - Building The Strength To Emerge From The Darkness Iris Gardner spent her childhood off the grid, an ideal life in the woods for a kid, totally off-grid, heading out on horseback, confronting mountain lions, reading books, growing and hunting their food, until the day a sexual predator moved into the house. This family friend would throw the life of a young 5-year-old child into unspeakable darkness. Hear a remarkable story from a truly remarkable lady who has emerged from that darkness with a message that will change how we view life and the lives of our children. EP 110: Preethaji - Creating A Life of Purpose, Free From Suffering Preethaji, one of the world's leading female philosophers, founded O&O Academy, a philosophy and meditation school, with her husband Krishnaji. She believes that you can live, as many do, a mediocre life with a contrived purpose, but a great life, career or relationship can only happen with an authentic purpose. Preethaji works with corporate leaders to discover purpose, connection and how to live in a beautiful state. Preethaji leads us to a whole new way of discovering love, passion, and creativity. Ep 223: Dr Sarah Woodhouse - The Disempowering Enemy Within Dr Sarah Woodhouse is a Research Psychologist specialising in trauma, helping people face this world and their past. Her book 'You're Not Broken', teaches us what trauma is (it's probably not what you think), how to recognise it, why it's there and how your past is likely holding you back. Sarah explains the pitfalls of ignoring awkward, upsetting episodes and how true freedom comes from looking back at your past with honesty. Using the latest research-based techniques, her own experience, and her twelve years of trauma research, Dr Sarah Woodhouse speaks with authority on this critical topic. Ep 226: Dr Bruce Perry - Heal Your Mental and Emotional Wounds and Move Forward Professor of Psychiatry at Northwestern University School of Medicine, Chicago, Dr. Bruce Perry's new book 'What Happened to You?' was written with Oprah. 'What Happened to You?' is a book that helps heal our mental and emotional wounds, wounds that many carry for decades and never give a thought to. Through groundbreaking scientific & emotional insights on behavioural patterns and actual brain science, Dr Perry explores how we can shift our approach to personal trauma by asking what happened to us. Oprah believes her first conversation with Dr Perry was one of the most important and impactful of her career. Ep 323: Yemi Penn - Rewrite Your Story Documentary producer Yemi Penn believes we should create our own memo. Author of 'Did You Get The Memo?', Yemi, born in Nigeria, has endured her fair share of trauma for herself and her family, including childhood abuse and homelessness. Yet, today Yemi is a self-made millionaire, owning multiple businesses across multiple countries. Yemi shares mindset adjustments to rip up our old backstory and create the new life we want, daring us to create a new narrative for our life and ultimately write our memo.

Research Psychologist and Psychoanalytic Therapist, Dr. Frieda Birnbaum. Dr. Birnbaum is passionate about educating the general public about the many forms of emotional manipulation that can take place in romantic relationships; especially gaslighting. The topic of Gaslighting has become an increasingly present fixture in the media, and Dr. Frieda is committed to making sure people are fully aware of what it is, how to identify it, and how to effectively address it for yourself and with loved ones who are involved in abusive relationships. Gaslighting: It's More than a Lie. It's Manipulation. Learn how to identify and protect yourself from emotional manipulation & abuse. The conversation surrounding toxic relationships has become increasingly prevalent as more and more individuals choose to focus their attention on self-awareness and self-improvement. Within the past 7 years, we have gained access to more knowledge and language to help us identify manipulative and abusive behaviors. Particularly, the term Gaslighting has gained a lot of traction and is showcased consistently throughout pop-culture and in the media. Perfect examples of gaslighting are exemplified in films and tv shows like Don't Worry Darling, Homeland, Midsommar, and Westworld. Regardless of the mass visibility of this manipulation tactic and its effects, it is still notoriously difficult to identify in our own lives, and victims of this form of abuse are still trapped in these vicious cycles of emotional exploitation. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, Gaslighting is classified as a form of coercive control that can leave victims with the inability to trust their own judgment or sanity; making them feel solely reliant on their abusers. Thankfully, our culture's growing acceptance for discussions of mental health and domestic abuse has provided more access to resources and acceptance for victims to come forward and escape these abusive relationships. Interview Op: Dr. Frieda Birnbaum—research psychologist, psychoanalytic therapist, seasoned media commentator, and author— with professional advice on how to identify and break the toxic cycles of gaslighting. Sample Talk Points Background: What is Gaslighting? Gaslighting is an insidious form of manipulation and psychological control. Victims of gaslighting are deliberately and systematically fed false information that leads them to question what they know to be true, often about themselves. They may end up doubting their memory, their perception, and even their sanity. By creating chaos, gaslighters hold all the power in the relationship as their victims become increasingly oppressed. How can victims of gaslighting identify that they're being manipulated? What are the signs? Gaslighters trick, deceive, and wear their victims down over time by: Attempting to turn friends and family against you/isolating you from your loved ones. Repeatedly lying to you. Criticizing you for being “crazy, sensitive, weak, inept, etc.” Your attempts to communicate your concerns never go anywhere. How can victims of gaslighting seek help when trying to leave their emotionally abusive relationship: Seek out a mental health professional. Check in with others outside of your relationship that you trust (family & friends who have known you for a while) for insight and advice. Don't be afraid to tell them if you feel that something isn't right. Try not to react: the intention of a gaslighter is to incite a strong emotional reaction that they can use against you. If you can, try to avoid showing your fear or that you're upset What are the best ways to support a friend or loved one who is in an abusive relationship? Calmly start a conversation on a positive note. Keep the conversation friendly and avoid expressing criticism and judgment. Learn more at: www.DrFrieda.com │ WPIX-TV New York │

Jessica Corneille, MSc is a Research Psychologist specializing in spontaneous spiritual awakening experiences. On this episode of the podcast we start by presenting a definition of a spontaneous spiritual awakening experience before going on to explore the after-effects of these experiences; how they seem to affect both atheists and strongly religious people; common preceding factors; the neurobiological and psychological factors correlated with spontaneous awakening experiences; as well as negative spiritual experiences, e.g spiritual crisis or spiritual emergencies. We also deconstruct the exclusive pathologizing of psychosis, bipolar, and schizophrenia and the delegitimization of the mystical states of other cultures as a kind of racism. Dr. Joli Hamilton is a Relationship Coach, TEDx Speaker, Jealousy Expert, Research Psychologist, Professor, Author, and Podcast Host. The Relationship Coach for Couples Who Color Outside the Lines! Joli helps people experience the freedom, deep security, and sexual fulfillment that comes when they shift from plain-old monogamy to MORE. More WHAT exactly? Polyamory, ethical nonmonogamy, creative monogamy- Joli guides you out of the standard script and into the life you were meant to have! “Your relationship can be both open and secure. It is possible. I help people do it every.single.day. Action-takers can have this life. Intentionally designed love, whether it is creatively monogamous or consensually non-monogamous, doesn't mean sacrificing stability or depth of connection. But the rules you learned about love won't get you where you want to go. You need a masterful coach to guide you. This is your most profound connection- you don't want to risk losing it just to get laid- you're an adult. But you also don't want a walking-dead life just because someone else said buttoned-up was the only way to do love. It's time to flip over tables and toss the rule books. My signature process gives you the skills you need to take full creative power over your love life!” In this episode, Joli and Shane discuss her work and studies on polyamory - the practice of having more than one romantic or sexual partner. What exactly does polyamory entail? Who is polyamorous? What are some of the major challenges? What are the benefits? What about jealousy? Is polyamory a pathway to individuation? These are just a few of the topics up for discussion in this episode. Spontaneous spiritual awakening experiences (I would call them cosmic consciousness experiences), are subjective experiences characterised by a sudden sense of direct contact, union, or complete nondual merging or experience of oneness with a perceived ultimate reality, the universe, “God,” or the divine. They can arise in response to some kind of practice such as meditation, or as in the case of my guest today completely of their own accord. Jessica is a Research Psychologist specialising in spontaneous spiritual awakening experiences. She graduated with a Masters Degree in Psychology (Distinction) from the University of Greenwich, where she focused her studies on induced and endogenous exceptional human experiences. With a passion to bridge the worlds of science and spirituality, her mission is to challenge the default pathologisation of awakening experiences by helping to inform and encourage mainstream psychology to look beyond the current designated spectrum of ‘normality', to encompass the transpersonal as something that is intrinsic to the human experience. She is also dedicated to helping individuals come to the realisation of their highest human potential, and fulfils part of this mission both as a Kundalini Yoga teacher and contracted leadership and empowerment coach. Jessica has presented her work at a number of academic conferences, including with the British Psychological Society. She also works for the Scientific and Medical Network, is a member of the Galileo Commission steering committee, and a collaborator of the Emergent Phenomenology Research Consortium and Spiritual Crisis Network. This 16 Days of Activism we will reflect on an aspect of GBV that is often neglected, the psychological and intergenerational effects of violence against women. The unaddressed trauma stemming from violence against women often results in a cycle of trauma that is passed on to newer generations. In this episode we will reflect on how this trauma may lead to internalized misogyny, aggression towards the survivors' male children when they become parents and how it affects how women deal with similar trauma experiences by their children. The core function of this episode is to outline the effects of this trauma and how we facilitate healing and preventative measures. We're talking remote work arrangements. Specifically, we’re talking about what teams and organizations can do to introduce, experiment, and iterate on virtual work tools and arrangements, especially in light of things like the spread of COVID-19. We cover a wealth of topics from VPNs to video meetings; going virtual first to balancing life and work when they both are happening in the same space; setting up a space at home to how people work when no one is watching them. Our guests' advice in a nutshell: It's OK to be wrong, we only learn by trying to new things. Keep iterating and adjusting. 01:05 Nicola Carpenter & Andrew Hanson 47:45 Shawn Anderson & Lauren Ruffin 1:10:30 Lauren Ruffin & Tim Cynova SHAWN ANDERSON currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer at Fractured Atlas where he oversees the organization's software development operations. Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and RTI International recently published “Results of the Workplace Health in America Survey,” a nationally representative study from 2017 that details the state of workplace health and wellness programs in the United States. In this episode, Alan Kohll talks with Laurie Cluff, a Ph.D. Research Psychologist at RTI who was a co-author of the study about some of the findings. The survey assessed the current status of employer-based health promotion programs (addressing nutrition, stress, physical activity, alcohol and substance abuse, sleep and a variety of other health topics), as well as health screenings, disease management, the use of incentives to encourage participation and health changes, work-life policies, implementation barriers and occupational safety and health. While workplace health promotion programs are increasing in the United States, there is still room for improvement.
