What happens when we step outside the boundaries of the physical world?Psychiatrist Bernard Beitman and neuroscientist Marina Weiler dive deep into the mysteries of out-of-body experiences (OBEs), near-death experiences (NDEs), astral encounters, and the possibility of life beyond the body.Pre-order Dr. Beitman's newest book "Life-Changing Synchronicities: A Doctor's Coincidences and Serendipities" at Simon & Schuster, Barnes and Noble, Inner Traditions, Amazon, Books-a-Million, Bookshop.org (May 2025).Marina shares her personal brushes with the paranormal—including poltergeist-like events and vivid dreams of the departed—even though she has never had an OBE herself. Bernard recounts his own surreal journey to the "coincidence control office" during an out-of-body episode. Together, they explore how these extraordinary events can transform our perspectives, reduce fear of death, and inspire profound life changes. Can we meet others—or even non-human entities—while traveling the astral plane? Is consciousness truly separate from the brain? Join this fascinating conversation as science and the mystical collide, and discover how synchronicity, intention, and expanded awareness can reshape our understanding of reality.Marina Weiler is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), University of Virginia. A trained neuroscientist with expertise in neuroimaging, brain stimulation, and consciousness studies, she investigates experiences that transcend traditional physical explanation. Her research has earned recognition from CAPES (Brazil), the Brazilian Academy of Neurology, the NIH, the Templeton World Charity Foundation, and the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Research.
In this powerful and mind-expanding episode of Powered Up Talk Radio, hosts Sandra Beck and Linda Franklin sit down with Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove, the only person to hold a doctoral degree in parapsychology from an accredited American university. Known for his decades of work exploring the boundaries of consciousness and the paranormal, Dr. Mishlove brings riveting insights from his research into the survival of human consciousness after death. Drawing from his award-winning essay The Best Evidence—which won the Bigelow Institute's prestigious first-place prize for the most compelling scientific evidence of life after death—Dr. Mishlove walks us through compelling case studies, scientific findings, and first-hand accounts that suggest our consciousness may continue beyond the physical body. Together, Sandra, Linda, and Dr. Mishlove explore what this means for our understanding of life, death, and everything in between. If you've ever wondered whether there is truly something more beyond this life, this episode will open your mind and heart to new possibilities.
In this prize-winning essay for the 2021 Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest, Dr. Ruickbie examines the evidence for the survival of consciousness after death (“life after death”). Initially skeptical, he found that there was sufficient evidence from a wide variety of sources, including apparitions, reincarnation, near-death experiences, after-death communication, and premonitions, that met the contest's criteria of being “beyond reasonable doubt.”Such claims are often dismissed as contravening the laws of physics; however, Ruickbie takes the ground-breaking approach of organizing the evidence as eye-witness testimony to the "block" universe (in which past, present and future exist at the same time) described by Albert Einstein and Hermann Minkowski; and finds further support in the latest theories and findings of Quantum Physics for what Ruickbie calls “timetanglement” and “cloud consciousness.” Using a novel framework inspired by Charles Dickens, this is a readable and convincing account of a complex and highly debated subject.BioDr Leo Ruickbie, FRHistS, FRAI, ARPS, PhD (Lond), MA, BA (Hons), ACIQ, Associate of King's College London, is a Visiting Fellow in Psychology at the University of Northampton, where he is a member of the Exceptional Experiences and Consciousness Studies research group.Described as a ‘leading historian and sociologist of the paranormal' by the Daily Express newspaper (print) and ‘a leading expert on the paranormal‘ (express.co.uk online), Dr Ruickbie specialises in controversial areas of human belief and experience, sometimes called ‘exceptional human experiences'. A phrase coined by Rhea White in 1990, exceptional human experience is ‘an umbrella term for many types of experience generally considered to be psychic, mystical, encounter-type experiences, death-related experiences, and experiences at the upper end of the normal range, such as creative inspiration, exceptional human performance' (White, 1994:5).Dr Ruickbie is closely involved in the work of the Society for Psychical Research as a member of Council, former Editor of its Magazine and a member of its Spontaneous Cases Committee. Established in 1882, the Society for Psychical Research is the world's largest, oldest and most reputable organisation for the scientific study of what we now call ‘the paranormal'.He is also a Professional Member of the Parapsychological Association. Established in 1957, the Parapsychological Association is affiliated to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In recognition of his contribution to scholarship sustained over the course of his career, Dr Ruickbie has been elected a Fellow of both the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Anthropological Institute.Dr Ruickbie's PhD is from King's College, London, for his thesis on contemporary witchcraft and magic use, building on research that won him an MA with distinction from Lancaster University. He is the author of several books, all based on rigorous research: Witchcraft Out of the Shadows (2004 and 2011), Faustus: The Life and Times of a Renaissance Magician (2009), A Brief Guide to the Supernatural (2012), A Brief Guide to Ghost Hunting (2013), The Impossible Zoo (2016) and Angels in the Trenches (2018); as well as numerous articles and chapters in scholarly publications.https://ruickbie.com/https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRMN4D41/ https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife

A scientific team comprising a neuroscientist, forensic psychiatrist, attorney, and a science-trained medium embarked on a groundbreaking journey. They interviewed 19 mediums, each with unique abilities, to delve into the urgent questions about humanity's spiritual development. These questions, formulated by the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS), challenged the spiritual world to assess humanity's spiritual progress since the time of Allan Kardec (1857). The questions explore whether humans have progressed spiritually in the past 167-plus years, and if not, who is to blame? Has the spirit world failed humanity, or have humans failed, either by themselves, sabotage, or impediments by corrupted spirits and earthbound entities? One underlying concern is whether humanity's technology has outstripped its spiritual development, placing itself at risk of extinction. The mediums contacted the highest spiritual entities, including The I AM, St. James, and Allan Kardec, to address these questions. The scientists took a revolutionary approach to interviewing mediums by encoding the questions as numbers and then presenting the numbers to the mediums as questions. The mediums demonstrated proficiency at Spiritual Sight, an advanced form of the US Military Intelligence Services remote viewing protocol. Additionally, they had to demonstrate the ability to shift the flow of electrons in a transistor with their minds. An attorney observed the interviews and a forensic psychiatrist assessed the mediums.BioMelvin L Morse, MD,born December 11, 1953, is an acclaimed Pediatrician, voted one of America's Best Doctors, and author of books on near death experiences and the spirituality of death and dying. Life after death is possible, and ghosties are real - and we've got the science to back it up! In this engaging conversation, Kim and Rachel delve into the intriguing topics of consciousness, life after death, and the scientific exploration (and proof!) of the paranormal. They discuss the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (not to be confused with Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo), the implications of an essay contest on life after death, and the nature of consciousness itself. The conversation also touches on the connection between consciousness and the Earth, the Akashic record (what IS that?), and not just the potential for life after death, but the probability for life after death, all while maintaining a light-hearted and humorous tone. paranormal, consciousness, life after death, Bigelow Institute, scientific evidence, Akashic record, ghost stories, spirituality, neuroscience, psychic phenomena Hosted on Acast. In this conversation, Jane and Sarah discuss the intersection of science and mediumship. They share some of their favorite research from scientists who have actually done the studies, collected evidence, and published their peer-reviewed work. They highlight the importance of understanding that science is a constantly evolving discipline and that there is scientific evidence supporting the validity of mediumship. They mention the Windbridge Research Center, which conducts rigorous scientific research on mediums and provides evidence of their accuracy. They also explore the topic of near-death experiences (NDEs) and the scientific research behind them, including the work of Dr. Eben Alexander. Additionally, they discuss the University of Virginia's past life study, which documents cases of children remembering past lives. They also discuss the Bigelow Institute's research on consciousness and the afterlife, the Yale study on voice hearers, and the Institute of Noetic Sciences' investigation into mediumship certification programs. Takeaways Science is a constantly evolving discipline and should not be used as a belief system to dismiss mediumship. The Wind Bridge Research Center provides scientific evidence supporting the accuracy of mediums. Near-death experiences (NDEs) offer insights into consciousness and the existence of an afterlife. The University of Virginia's past life study documents cases of children remembering past lives. A Gift from BICS. [Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies] Winning Essays from 2023. 5 Volume collection: Proof of Survival of Human Consciousness Beyond Permanent Bodily Death. Synchronicity. The arrival of the BICS set may - or may not - have triggered a paranormal event with my bedside lamp. Similar to my nightlight activity, the bulb began to flicker and blink on and off. Some bulbs recover from the static electricity interference - others burn out. The LED bulb in question did not burn out - but it eventually dimmed too much to be useful as a reading light and has been replaced with a halogen bulb. And so it goes... For those who have listened to me on Small Town over the years, you know I always reference the Gateway Program, developed through the work of Robert Monroe and the Monroe Institute in Virginia. Monroe believed that by using specific sound frequencies and meditation techniques, he could leave his physical body and travel via a second body, or spirit body, to other realities removed from the physical world — places unbounded by time or death. The Gateway Program is a series of audio exercises using frequencies, including binaural beat hemispheric synchronization exercises, developed by Robert A. Monroe to achieve expanded states of consciousness. Through these courses, I was able to dissociate from myself and connect with spirit beings from the other side through the combined hemi-sync frequencies and meditational exercises. My guest, psychologist and author Candice Sanderson, joins me for this episode of the Small Town Tales Podcast to discuss her out-of-body travels, her experience with the Monroe Institute, and her book, The Reluctant Messenger: Tales from Beyond Belief.About Candice SandersonIn August 2013, Candice Sanderson began receiving messages from nonphysical realms, changing her pragmatic life as a psychologist. Since that remarkable transformation, multiple agencies have studied her newfound skills: researchers from the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at the University of Virginia, the Institute for the Awakened Mind, Monroe Institute, and a Harvard study funded by the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS).Sanderson's international award-winning books, The Reluctant Messenger, The Reluctant Messenger Returns, and her series of short books called From the Reluctant Messenger, chronicle some of her out-of-body travels and extraordinary connections with non-human intelligences. This week I am reading from Jeffrey Mishlove and Russell Targ's book 'Russell Targ: Ninety Years of Remote Viewing, ESP, and Timeless Awareness'.A childhood magician, raconteur, laser pioneer, physicist, parapsychologist, and psychic spy, Russell Targ has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning more than six decades. Now in his ninetieth year, Russell is still active and his work in consciousness research and extra sensory perception is more relevant than ever.Along with physicist Harold Puthoff, Targ created the now famous remote viewing program at Stanford Research Institute (SRI). The psychic intelligence-gathering program known as Grill flame, Stargate (and other names) was funded by the CIA and other US government agencies for 23 years, and brought ESP research into the mainstream, much to the dismay of materialist scientists. Those findings convinced him of the reality of non-dualism and he became a practicing Buddhist. This book dialogues 15 conversations with Jeffrey Mishlove, the veteran parapsychologist and host of the New Thinking Allowed YouTube channel, in which they delve into remote viewing by military intelligence, precognitive dreaming, ESP, and much, much more.Jeffrey BioNew Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, The PK Man, and the New Thinking Allowed Dialogues series: Is There Life After Death? He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in the world from an accredited university that says, “Parapsychology.” It was awarded from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1980. He is also the Grand Prize winner of the Bigelow Institute essay competition regarding postmortem survival of human consciousness.Russell BioRussell Targ is a physicist and author who has devoted much of his professional career to the research of the human capacity for psychic ability. In 1972, he co-founded the Stanford Research Institute's federally-funded program that investigated psychic abilities in humans. The program provided invaluable information and techniques to various government intelligence agencies, including the DIA, the CIA, NASA, and Army Intelligence. In his ten years with the program, Targ co-published his findings in some of the most prestigious scientific journals. He is the co-author, with Jane Katra, of five books about psychic abilities, two of which are: Miracles of Mind: Exploring Non-local Consciousness & Spiritual Healing, and The Heart of the Mind: How to Experience God Without Belief (both New World Library.). Targ was also quite active in the development of the laser and its various applications, having written over fifty articles on advanced laser research. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and has received two NASA awards for inventions and contributions in laser and laser communications. My guest for this episode is Sharon Hewitt Rawlette. Sharon is a philosopher who writes for both popular and scholarly audiences on the topics of consciousness, anomalous experience, ethics, and spirituality. She has a PhD in philosophy from New York University and taught at Brandeis University before launching her career as an independent writer and researcher. She is also the founder and director of the Mind & Meaning Institute, which brings together world-class researchers to explore new philosophical and empirical approaches to the deepest questions raised by human experience. Soon after leaving academia for a career as an independent writer and researcher, Sharon became interested in the phenomenon of “coincidence” or “synchronicity”: strange, enigmatic experiences that aren't blatantly paranormal but that seem so improbably meaningful that they make us wonder whether something more than chance lies behind them. Her May 2019 book, The Source and Significance of Coincidences, presents a wealth of evidence concerning the statistical importance of coincidences, their range of possible causes, and how we can best interpret their implications for our lives. In November 2021, Sharon was named a runner-up in the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest for her essay “Beyond Death.” This essay summarises and analyses the best evidence for life after death collected over the last 150 years. I begin the interview by talking about what first interested her in anomalous and strange experiences and how that developed as a student, into academia, and becoming an independent researcher. We then discuss her work on coincidences, before focusing on her essay Beyond Death, exploring some of the Third Person and First Person evidence that she collected for that and how scientific research might progress when it comes to investigating the survival of human consciousness. Further information on Sharon and her research can be found at https://sharonrawlette.com/. If you would like to support the upkeep of Some Other Sphere you can make a donation via Ko-fi. Philosopher Sharon Rawlette provides you clear evidence that minds survive death. Apparitions, mediums, near-death experiences, and reincarnation form the background for evidence from synchronicities of living beyond death. A key lesson: when that butterfly or bird feels like a loved one is communicating with you, enjoy the exchange of love. Try to avoid analyzing. Sharon Hewitt Rawlette is a philosopher and interdisciplinary researcher specializing in anomalous phenomena and their implications for our understanding of consciousness. Rawlette earned her PhD in philosophy from New York University in 2008 and taught at Brandeis University before leaving academia for an independent writing career. Her books include The Source and Significance of Coincidences, The Supreme Victory of the Heart (a memoir), and Beyond Death: The Best Evidence for the Survival of Human Consciousness (2021), which was a runner-up in the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS) 2021 essay contest. https://sharonrawlette.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Source-Significance-Coincidences-Astonishing-Evidence/dp/1733995706/https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Death-Evidence-Survival-Consciousness/dp/1733995749/ https://www.amazon.com/Supreme-Victory-Heart-Memoir-Synchronicity/dp/1733995722/ Our host Dr. Bernard Beitman is the first psychiatrist since Carl Jung to attempt to systematize the study of coincidences. He is Founding Director of The Coincidence Project. His book, and his Psychology Today blog, are both titled Connecting with Coincidence. He has developed the first valid and reliable scale to measure coincidence sensitivity and has written and edited coincidence articles for Psychiatric Annals. I'm so excited about today's episode because I think it's been a long time coming. This episode isn't about UFOs, per se, but it is about something that often happens to people when they begin looking into this topic—or other topics that challenge our consensus reality—which is the sudden appearance of profound synchronicities. I hear from dozens of listeners of the podcast everyday, and one of the things that people reach out to me about most is to tell me that after they started listening to the podcast they suddenly started encountering strings of bizarre and improbable synchronicities in their lives. I've heard that exact thing from more people than I could ever get back to—and if you're one of those people, I just want you to know that I've heard you, and I wanted to do an episode about this very phenomenon that I hope can serve as sort of roadmap in beginning to understand and integrate what synchronicities are and how you can best ride the wave of the improbable in your own lives. And I couldn't think of anyone better to join me in this conversation than today's guest—the woman who literally wrote the book on strange coincidences—Sharon Hewitt Rawlette. I've been lucky enough to meet Sharon and hear her speak at two different conferences in the last year—both December's Inquire Anomalous conference in NYC, and Rice University's Archive's of the Impossible in May—and both times I was blown away by the depth and ingenuity of her thinking. Sharon has the ability to make complex ideas easy to grok, and every time I hear her speak I walk away with a new perspective and understanding. I'll link up both of those talks in the episode description if you'd like to check them out.Sharon Hewitt Rawlette is a philosopher who writes for both popular and scholarly audiences on the topics of consciousness, anomalous experience, ethics, and spirituality. Before launching her career as an independent writer and researcher, she earned her PhD in philosophy from New York University. She currently serves on the board of the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies as well as being a supporting researcher for the International Centre for Reincarnation Research. She has published four books and in 2021 was named a runner-up in the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest for her essay “Beyond Death,” on the best evidence for the survival of human consciousness after permanent bodily death. The book that we'll be referencing today is Sharon's book entitled The Source and Significance of Coincidences. And if you have any interest in this topic, I really can't recommend this book enough. Sharon attacks this topic from every conceivable angle, and the extensive table of contents makes it an invaluable reference tool when you want to dig a little deeper into strange coincidences that occur in your own life. How can near death experiences and UFO encounters contribute to a better understanding of consciousness and the universe? Dr. Long joins me for a discussion about Near Death Experiences (NDEs), UFOs and the intersection of consciousness and these phenomena. We talk about the complex and fascinating relationship between humans and these phenomena, and the importance of ongoing research and investigation. We highlighted the significance of NDEs and encounters with otherworldly beings, and the potential for these experiences to unify people across cultures and beliefs. What happens when two philosophers and a neuroscientist walk into a podcast? They talk about things they wish more people knew. If people only knew how magical the world is, they might take better care of it, and relate to it with a greater sense of reverence and wonder. It's not that our reverence and wonder should depend on the existence of woo-woo phenomena, but that nature's superness is palpable in every direction if we would only slow down, brush the cobwebs of dogmatism away, and relax into the mind of Nature and the nature of mind. Mystery and magic abound. Two of my favorite people return to talk about that magic and mystery. Mona Sobhani and Sharon Hewitt Rawlette each joined us earlier in the year, and now they have come together to create a larger ecology of mind and swap stories about the superness of Nature.Sharon Hewitt Rawlette is a philosopher and interdisciplinary researcher specializing in anomalous phenomena and their implications for our understanding of consciousness. This week I'm takling to Jeffrey Long about his Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies winning essay 'Evidence for Survival of Consciousness in Near-Death Experiences: Decades ofScience and New Insights'.Virtually everyone has wondered if there is an afterlife. This is understandable, given the appropriate concerns about the mortality of ourselves, our loved ones, and all of humanity. The question of an afterlife has been discussed and debated for millennia. As a physician practicing the medical specialty of radiation oncology, which is the use of radiation therapy to treat cancer, I have been intrigued by issues of our mortality. The question of what happens after bodily death is regularly present in my daily medical practice as I work with patients that have a life-threatening diagnosis of cancer. Prior investigations of near-death experience (NDE) combined with the research that I am presenting in this article have convinced me, based on evidence, that our consciousness survives bodily death.BioJeffrey Long is a medical doctor specializing in the practice of radiation oncology, using radiation to treat cancer. As a scientist, Jeff founded NDERF in 1998. He wanted to know if NDEs were real by directly asking the NDErs themselves. The answer is a resounding YES! As a result of his research, he is the author of the New York Times Best Seller, "Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences." He also wrote "God and the Afterlife: The Groundbreaking New Evidence for God and Near-Death Experience." As a leading NDE researcher and a medical doctor, Jeff has appeared on national media including O'Rielly Factor, NBC today, ABC with Peter Jennings, the Dr. Oz Show, the History Channel, the Learning Channel, and National Geographic. He has also appeared on Fox News Houston and at the New York Academy of Sciences.https://www.bigelowinstitute.org/index.php/essay-contest/https://www.bigelowinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/long-survival-consciousness.pdfhttps://www.nderf.org/index.htmhttps://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast
Episode 111: On this episode, Jeffrey Mishlove joins me to talk about his case for life after death. Jeff earned a doctorate degree in Parapyschology from UC Berkley and was the grand prize winner of the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS) Essay contest, making the best case for life after death and consciousness outside the brain, entitled “Beyond the Brain”. He is the author of the books, The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems and The PK Man and is the host of the New Thinking Allowed show. Jeff provides nine lines of evidence for proof of the afterlife in the essay and we talked about several of them, to include Near Death Experiences (NDEs), mediumship, reincarnation, instrumental transcoummication, possession and more. He also described an experience he had in his early 20s, where he believe he was visited by his deceased Great Uncle in his dream and communicated with him. Jeff stated that this experience was so profound that it led him into his work and study Parapshychology. He is the only person in the US to ever receive a doctoral degree in Paraphsychology from an accredited university. Jeff also discussed with me things like psychokineses, which wrote a book about and poltergeists, all are also topics that help make the case for life after death. A Course in Miracles is a very practical path, but its practicality rests on some extremely unconventional views about the nature of reality. Is there evidence for those views? That is what we discuss with philosopher and writer Sharon Hewitt Rawlette. Sharon is a recent prize winner in the Bigelow Institute contest for essays on the evidence for life after death. In this conversation, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington ask Sharon about evidence for the existence of God, life after death, angels, whether there is a prearranged plan for our lives, and much more. Join us for an illuminating discussion on remarkable evidence for a different picture of reality.
Elizabeth Krohn, an old friend of Whitley's and popular Dreamland guest, is the primary author of the book Changed in a Flash: One Woman's Near-Death Experience and Why a Scholar Thinks It Empowers Us All, which she wrote with Jeffrey Kripal. Her book reflects on the experience she had when she was fatally struck by lightning in 1988, and the influence it has had on the way she lives life now. She is also one of the recent winners of the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest, and the only winner who drew on their own personal near-death experience in their essay.Elizabeth begins the show with what may be best description of an NDE in the history of Dreamland. This deep and searching interview mines Elizabeth's wisdom on topics such as why we must return to the physical world after we die and how we might finally break free of the cycle of reincarnation.Whitley's careful questioning and Elizabeth's insightful answers offer a window into an experience we will all eventually know, which is what makes this such an important conversation. This brilliant discussion will change the way you think about death – and perhaps life too!Visit Whitley Strieber's site, and consider becoming a subscriber! https://www.unknowncountry.com
We begin a periodic series of shows with the winners of the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies afterlife essay contest with this discussion with Thinking Allowed host Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove. Jeff is a licensed clinical psychologist and accomplished radio and television interviewer. He is also the recent winner of the first prize in the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay competition, where entrants were asked to write essays presenting the evidence for survival of human consciousness after bodily death.Jeffrey's investigation into what he calls “human deviancy” progressed from a more conventional study of psychopathology to parapsychology, the study of psychic phenomena. He holds the only doctoral diploma in parapsychology to be awarded by an accredited American university (University of California, Berkeley).Jeffrey speaks with a valuable clarity about his own understanding of the afterlife and why he believes that it is real.In this episode, he and Whitley journey into a rich discussion on topics such as what happens when we die, prophetic dreams, and the connection between the dreamworld and high strangeness.Visit Whitley Strieber's site, and consider becoming a subscriber! https://www.unknowncountry.com
Sharon Hewitt Rawlette is a philosopher and writer who studies extraordinary experiences and what they have to tell us about consciousness and the deeper nature of the world we live in. She has a Ph.D. in philosophy from New York University and taught for two years at Brandeis University before leaving academia in 2010 for a career as an independent writer and researcher. Her foray into the realm of extraordinary experience began with synchronicities, and her first non-academic book was The Source and Significance of Coincidences, published in 2019. In 2020, she published a memoir about her personal spiritual journey—The Supreme Victory of the Heart—and then in November 2021, she was named a runner-up in the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest for her essay “Beyond Death,” on the best evidence for the survival of human consciousness after death. She has also contributed to a forthcoming collaborative volume on “deep weird” and a French collective work on the role of the Trickster in paranormal phenomena. WTF Just Happened?!: Afterlife Evidence, Paranormal + Spirituality without the Woo
This is a special episode launching WTF Just Happened?!'s Million Dollar Consciousness Challenge of Gilead contest. This is a contest where WTF Just Happened?! will offer one million dollars to anyone who can prove, through a scientific, peer reviewed study that demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that consciousness is created in human beings at the moment of conception. Note this cannot be belief based, it must be scientifically valid.* Since, as this podcast discusses, consciousness including it's origin, start, end, source etc is one of the biggest life mysteries, I challenge anyone who has claimed to have such confidence in when consciousness begins that they are comfortable with laws being passed based on this claim, to actually back up this claim. This challenge is inspired by the Amazing Randi's one million dollar challenge, where stage magician James Randi, offered one million dollars to anyone who demonstrated they had psychic, mediumship or any other "paranormal" abilities. No one ever won, which does not mean that no one has these abilities. That is another topic, which has been discussed on this podcast in Episode 14 - The Blue Lady of The Moss Beach Distillery with Parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach and Episode 8 - The Evidence that Convinced Two Skeptics There is an Afterlife with Darren McEnaney of Seeking I. There was another high money challenge that recently was proposed by Robert Bigelow of The Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies, offering up to $500,000 for the essay that provided the best evidence of an afterlife. And there were winners. The top three prizes went to: First place $500,000 was awarded to Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove, 2nd Prize $300,000, Pim van Lommel M.D., 3rd Prize $150,000, Leo Ruickbie Ph.D. There were other awards given to those not in the top three, and their essays are worth reading. *This means that the scientific community would come to a consensus that yes, this has been proven. Apparently in the United States of America, laws are being passed that apply to women (only in certain states who are only in certain socio-economic income brackets, where they cannot afford to take a day or two off and fly to another state) imposing this what can only now be interpreted as a religious belief. I would be curious to see if there is actual valid evidence that could prove this astronomical claim. Terms and conditions: To be eligible for the one million dollars, the scientific community must be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt, as well as me that consciousness is created at conception. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wtfjusthappened/support

EPISODE Part 2:The renowned physicist and philosopher David Bohm once said, “The great strength of science is that it is rooted in actual experience. The great weakness of contemporary science is that it admits only certain types of experience as legitimate.” Life after death, or the survival of post-mortem consciousness, is one of the areas modern science has tended to shun despite the fact that there is a mountain of evidence that supports it. The volume of evidence is indisputable, from over 1700 solved reincarnation cases, plus countless other examples of out of body experiences, messages received in dreams, and much more, including so-called near death experiences (which are often after clinical death has been noted). The evidence is there, so the question becomes: “Why do we not believe it? “ Is it because it upends our current paradigm based on the notion of a fundamentally material universe and consciousness being an epiphenomenon of matter? Or is it because our understanding of time, space, and consciousness is too limited? Our two guests think it is both – and fortunately, Jeffrey Mishlove and Leo Ruickbie, are willing, and able, to stretch the scientific paradigm to a broader vision. Mishlove and Ruickbie are the newly awarded Grand Prize and 3rd place winner of the Robert Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest that asked for hard evidence beyond a reasonable doubt for the existence of the afterlife. Join us as they share some of that evidence with you today, and more, as we explore a new science of life after death. Here is a link to Jeffrey Mishlove's video channel New Thinking Allowed:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFk448YbGITLnzplK7jwNcwJeffrey Mishlove is a licensed clinical psychologist, an accomplished radio and television interviewer, and one of the most erudite and articulate personalities on television. He is the author of an encyclopedic volume of consciousness studies, The Roots of Consciousness. He is keeping up the flame as host of New Thinking Allowed, an ongoing YouTube based series.Dr. Mishlove is a past director of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and has served as President of the Intuition Network.Jeffrey holds the only doctoral diploma in parapsychology to be awarded by an accredited American university (University of California, Berkeley). A revision of his doctoral dissertation, Psi Development Systems, was released in 1988 as a Ballantine paperback. This book evaluates methods purported to train psychic abilities. He is also author of The PK Man.Jeffrey teaches parapsychology to ministers in training with the Centers for Spiritual Living (formerly the Church of Religious Science) through their Holmes Institute. His avocations include financial forecasting (see his occasional Forecasting Systems newsletters), hiking in the Mojave desert and karaoke.Dr Leo Ruickbie is a Visiting Fellow in Psychology at the University of Northampton, where he is involved with the Exceptional Experiences and Consciousness Studies Research Group. With a PhD from King's College, London, on contemporary witchcraft and magic, he has written six books exploring a range of supernatural topics, most recently Angels in the Trenches about Spiritualism, superstition and other paranormal beliefs and experiences during the First World War. In addition, he has contributed almost a hundred articles and presentations in his field. In recognition of this sustained contribution to scholarship, he has been elected a Fellow of both the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Anthropological Institute. In 2021, he won 3rd prize in the highly competitive essay contest on life after death organized by the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies. He is currently editing a two-volume academic series on life after death and will be presenting at this year's conference of the Royal Anthropological Institute on the subject of artificial intelligence.

She has a PhD in philosophy from New York University and taught for two years at Brandeis University before leaving academia in 2010 for a career as an independent writer and researcher. Her foray into the realm of extraordinary experience began with synchronicities, and her first non-academic book was The Source and Significance of Coincidences, published in 2019. In 2020, she published a memoir about her personal spiritual journey—The Supreme Victory of the Heart—and then in November 2021, she was named a runner-up in the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest for the best evidence for the survival of human consciousness after death.
