I break down complex topics into easy-to-understand content.HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?When I know that I’ve given it all I’ve got; no holds barred. And I feel like I’m on top of the world, that is success. I have an internal locus of control. I believe that my life is what I make of it. I’m not saying that external reinforcement isn’t appreciated. I love a good pat on the back. And, sure, outside forces can also make some negative dents. But in the end, I’m the one making my choices. If I’m making the kinds of decisions that improve my existence — improve the world, I’m succeeding.WHAT MAKES YOUR COMPANY UNIQUE?I have many interests and passions. When I decided to focus on a niche market, I combined many passions that enjoyed a synergistic relationship rather than choosing only one. That synergistic relationship is The Wellness Connection. It doesn’t focus solely on human health. It also focuses on the health of our planet—environmental health. You really can’t have one without the other. My tag line, Mind+Body+Spirit+Planet, is a lifestyle choice. It’s not just some catchy slogan. I believe it takes healthy humans to ensure a healthy planet, but it also takes a healthy planet to ensure healthy humans. Healthy People = Healthy Planet ~ Healthy Planet = Healthy People.WHO IN THE INDUSTRY INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?I’ve been studying with American Writers and Artists Institute (AWAI) for some time now. Every copywriting course I’ve taken through this organization has inspired me. If I had to choose one person who inspires me, I’d pick a conversational copywriter, digital marketer, Nick Usborne, at nickusborne.com. He’s a down-to-earth marketer who exudes trustworthiness, and he’s not stingy with his knowledge. He takes the time to educate others, whether in a course he’s teaching or on his website.WHAT IS A TIP FOR SUCCESS THAT YOU WOULD PROVIDE SOMEONE IN YOUR INDUSTRY?Know your audience. Pick one person from that audience and write to that person as if you were talking over coffee. What is the biggest change that you see coming with COVID-19 and the way people market their companies?A lot of people need to start focusing more online. Obviously, it’s a more virtual reality now. They can’t see their customers face to face the way that they’re used to. Not only that, but they also need to really start focusing on how their website is presenting their business. This is a really great time to just focus inward a little bit and make sure that your web site is putting your best face out there so that people understand what you’re all about and you can get their needs met. How we market and sell to our clients has changed over the years. Gone are the days of sounding like a slick, pushy, and overbearing used car salesman. As Nick Usborne will attest, you need to engage in a conversation with your clients, not just talk at them. Building trust can come through in tone and word choice, so opting to use everyday simple conversational wording over tech jargon will go a long way in building relationships and making sales. Discover how to “write for the web” and engage your customers by engaging in conversational copywriting.
“Bad writing can undermine everything you’re trying to do.” As someone who started out as a marketing copywriter and who still spends a lot of time today teaching business writing and writing books, I couldn’t wait to talk to copywriting and web writing expert Nick Usborne about how the words we use help us build better brands. We discussed this and much more this week on the On Brand podcast. About Nick Usborne Nick Usborne is an online copywriter and trainer who wrote his first website in 1995. When his book, Net Words, was published by McGraw-Hill in 2002, it was one of the very first to address the new profession of writing for the web. After writing web copy for nearly two decades, Nick began teaching companies and organizations how to write better websites. A few years later, he began converting his corporate training materials into courses and programs for freelance writers and copywriters. Today, Nick continues to immerse himself in teaching the craft of conversational copywriting. Having worked with clients like Citibank, Apple, Reuters, WebEx, and New York Times, Nick has seen it all in the world of copywriting — and he knows what works. He’s earned 15 awards in direct response marketing — both in Europe and North America — and he’s worked as an advisor and consultant to various startups — primarily in online consumer product sales. He’s spoken at numerous online marketing conferences, as well as conducted in-house seminars and training sessions for companies like Yahoo!, Novartis Pharma, John Deere, Walt Disney Attractions, and more. Nick lives in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where he’s not always sitting in front of a keyboard. When he’s not working, and if the weather is being kind, he can often be seen enjoying the outdoors via kayak or bike. In the winter he’s out on his cross-country skis most days. Episode Highlights “A lot of writing is unnecessarily clever.” Especially in marketing. Nick notes that when you make your marketing copy too complex and clever, you put distance between your brand and your customer. “Customers connect with brands that sound accessible.” Why is clear and concise writing so hard? “We’ve had it educated out of us in grammar school, university, and god help you if you’ve been to a business school. You end up writing in a way no one can understand.” How has writing for the web changed brand building? “Before, companies had more control of the brand,” says Nick. “Today the brand is the experience people have with the brand.” But, because of the web, we can also listen to our customers more than we could before. What brand has made Nick smile recently? Nick shared the story of Ernest Packaging Solutions. In spite of their use of the word ‘solutions’ (“It should be banned in marketing other than for chemical companies”), the company makes their customers smile by making unconventional things like surfboards out of cardboard boxes. If a cardboard box company can make their customers smile, you can too! To learn more, check out the special page Nick made for listeners of the show at conversationalcopywriting.com/onbrand. Nick Usborne has been a copywriter since 1979. He has a copywriting portfolio in companies such as Citibank, Apple, Chrysler, NY Times, Disney, The US Navy, and more. He also has won more than 15 copywriting awards. Today, he is teaching and has online copywriting courses.
One way to use generosity as a marketing tool is to treat your content marketing as a gift for your market. That's just one of the ideas from my second interview with Nick Usborne, who teaches a course on conversational copywriting. There was also some ranting about whether puppies are always click bait. You may remember Nick from Episode #360 earlier this year. You can still take advantage of his special offer: sign up here to get Nick's free guide and videos. Nick and I will both be speaking again at AWAI's Bootcamp, which is sold out but you can still register to attend virtually. Nick Usborne is an online copywriter and site optimization expert with over 20 years of experience online. During a career spanning 40 years in the marketing industry – offline and then online – he has worked with dozens of major companies. Since 1997, he has been working exclusively on marketing online and internationally recognized as a leading expert on the subject of writing for the Web. He attributes his success to “conversational copywriting,”. In today's conversation, we talk about, why is conversational copywriting the future of not just copywriting in general, but also for all interactions online? How do we write to engage with our customers and clients? Because if you can engage the readers, and if you write copy that gets responses, that gets people replying, sharing, and taking action, that's the purpose of copywriting right?! You are probably implementing this idea of conversational copywriting into your email sequences, your social media strategy or your sales page strategy, even if you don't know it. I think the most effective operators are already writing this way and the chances are that your favorite newsletter or something like that, is written in a very conversational style. In this broadcast, Nick and I talk about: Nick's entry about entering the world of copywriting What differs conversational copywriting from ''standard'' one What types of engagement are available to use with your clients How to sell with conversational copywriting Why selling through conversation in a better way to do it How to choose the right platform for better engagement with your audience Ways to encourage dialogue with your audience Is storytelling fits into this type of copywriting How to Connect with Nick: conversationalcopywriting.com/trenches/ Nick on Twitter Nick on Linkedin Get the Latest Broadcasts of In The Trenches Subscribe to In The Trenches on iTunes How You Can Support In The Trenches Did you enjoy today's broadcast of In The Trenches?
