“Historically, in higher education and in music in general, it was a male-dominated podium expectation. When we step on the podium as women-identifying conductors, we're breaking that image. There's a long way to go, and WiCHEd is working on bringing a supportive community together, helping the next generation figure out how to navigate this complicated web.”Coreen Duffy is associate professor of conducting and director of choral activities at the University of Colorado Boulder where she conducts the CU Boulder Chamber Singers and oversees the choral program. Her duties at the College of Music include leading the graduate program in choral conducting at both the master's and doctoral levels.Duffy is also artistic director of the Seicento Baroque Ensemble, a Boulder-based semi-professional choral ensemble committed to working with period instruments and historically-informed performance practice. Prior to her appointment at CU Boulder, Duffy served on the faculties of the University of Montana and the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Under her direction, the University of Montana Chamber Chorale performed at the Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition, the 75th Anniversary Festival of Music at the Hochschule für Musik Saar, Cadogan Hall and Southwark Cathedral, Carnegie Hall, the Northwest Conference of the American Choral Directors Association, and the Montana International Choral Festival.Duffy is an active clinician and composer: Her works are published by ECS Publishing, Hinshaw Music, Pavane Publishing and Walton Music. She specializes in Jewish choral music and  has presented sessions on the subject internationally including the international conference of the European Center for Jewish Music (EZJM) in Hannover, Germany, and national conferences of the College Music Society, National Association for Music Education, National Collegiate Choral Organization, North American Jewish Choral Festival and ACDA.Duffy is vice president of the National Collegiate Choral Organization and recently served as president-elect of the Northwestern ACDA and Northwest representative of the NAfME National Choral Council.  The Coach Mo Golf Show welcomes six-time NCAA Division-III West Region Coach of the Year and a nine-time Northwest Conference Coach of the Year, Coach MJ McCloskey to the show. Coach MJ started the George Fox Women's Golf program from the ground-up in 2006 and led them to their first NCAA DIII National title in 2023 at Mission Inn, in Howie-in-the-Hills, FL in 2023.  It was a dramatic, controversial, and eventful Championship that flooded social media and national news with videos and news on the tournament's controversial pin position on #6. In this episode you'll hear all about the championship, the controversy, as well as discussions I have with Coach McCloskey's new book, "How Girls Win." Coach MJ McCloskey Bio:In 2006, McCloskey launched the first George Fox University women's golf program and since then has led the team to prestige as one of the most dominant in the country bringing home 7 NCAA trophies including winning the 2023 NCAA D-III Women's Golf National Championship. Her team was only the third NCAA D-III Golf team west of the Mississippi to win the NCAA National Championship To date, the program has won 97 collegiate tournaments and has been recognized in four separate seasons (including this season) as the top-ranked team in the country. Coach MJ has a marketing degree from the Univ. of Oregon and an MBA from the University of Portland. The team has also won 13 straight Northwest Conference titles.. The program also boasts a NCAA Individual National Champion, two NCAA Individual National RunnerUps, two National Players of the Year, three NCAA Freshman Player of the Year honorees, 27 Women Golf Coaches Assn (WGCA) All Americans, 34 WGCA All-Region team members, 10 NWC Player of the Year honorees, 57 All-NW Conference players, and 24 WGCA All-American Scholar winners. Players from her program have qualified for the US Women's Amateur as well as for the LPGA Portland Classic event. In 2013, McCloskey was promoted to the role of Director of Golf for George Fox, one of the first women to be named to that position in NCAA Division-III and oversees the development of both the men's and women's golf teams at the university. For McCloskey, it's never been about awards but helping young women find their greatness. Her passion is to help student-athletes grow stronger and realize that anything is possible with a positive mindset, strong work ethic, and a passionate desire to learn. McCloskey served 2 terms as D-III Director on the Board of Directors for the Women Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). She is currently serving on the NCAA Division-III Women's Golf Regional Championship Selection Committee and is also part of the WGCA Mentorship program. Susan, your host, first wants the listeners to know that in this conversation, she's discussing the topic of suicide, which might be sensitive or upsetting for some of you. Be prepared for a respectful and authentic conversation.   Susan welcomes Alexandra Wyman. Alexandra is an advocate and public speaker for resources in the aftermath of suicide. After she lost her husband to suicide in August 2020, Alexandra found a need to change the language around suicide and decided to write about it. Her memoir, The Suicide Club: What To Do When Someone You Love Chooses Death, is an Amazon best seller. She has spoken at a variety of conferences, including the 2023 Northwest Conference on Childhood Grief and the 2023 Military Social Work & Behavioral Health Conference, and has been accepted to present at the International Association of Suicide Prevention Conference 2023 in Piran, Slovenia. Alexandra is the host of The Widows Club podcast. She practices pediatric occupational therapy and lives in Colorado with her son.   Key Takeaways: Alexandra shares her grief story of when she lost her husband to suicide. Grief is overwhelming; it comes in waves. The individual experience of grief is unique. Susan and Alexandra share how impactful it was for them when people took objects that belonged to their loved ones who passed away. People tend to think that what happened to you would never happen to them, and in the way of protecting themselves, they end up asking questions that end up shaming and blaming the grieving person. Not all people who died to suicide had a diagnosis. Alexandra learned to have compassion for her husband, who chose suicide; in her opinion, it takes a lot of courage to decide to end your own life to end an excruciating pain. Grief is an inward journey, a path of you learning about yourself and becoming a better version of yourself. Practice compassion and love for yourself. There are different types of grief. Be unapologetic about your boundaries! No matter who that person is, if someone is not honoring your grief, set boundaries to protect your healing process. You are more than your grief. Alexandra talks about The Widows Club. Remember, it is possible to get to a place of joy again. The grief will be with you for the rest of your life but will change over time. YOU CAN DO THIS! You are not alone; seek those moments of joy.   Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com If you find this episode helpful, please donate

“After such a tragic death, it is possible to get to a place of peace and joy again, but to do so, we have to ride the emotional waves that include feelings of anger or resentment, whether toward our loved one who has died or others involved. Early on, I was told that this grief process is like riding a surfboard on choppy waters. Sometimes they calm down, and other times we are gasping for air. No matter what, we need to ride those waves and embrace the whole journey. A person familiar with the negotiations confirmed the contract to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the move had not been announced. The deal begins with the 2024 season. Hoerner, who turns 26 in May, is moving back to second base this year after he was the team's regular shortstop in 2022. The Cubs signed All-Star shortstop Dansby Swanson to a $177 million, seven-year contract in December. NFL – Lamar Jackson says he has requested trade from Ravens Lamar Jackson says he has requested a trade from the Baltimore Ravens, saying the team “has not been interested in meeting my value.” The star quarterback said Monday in a series of tweets that he requested a trade as of March 2. That version of the franchise tag allowed Jackson to negotiate with other teams, but it also gives Baltimore a chance to match any agreement he makes. NFL – GMs for Packers, Jets discuss status of Rodgers trade talks Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said he's not requiring a first-round pick in a potential trade sending four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets but added he'd want “fair value.” Gutekunst and Jets general manager Joe Douglas both discussed trade talks involving the 39-year-old Rodgers on Monday at the NFL annual meeting. Rodgers said March 15 during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on SiriusXM and YouTube that he intends to play for the Jets in 2023. NFL – Patriots owner Robert Kraft campaigns against antisemitism New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has launched a $25-million national ad campaign against antisemitism. The ads will be featured during popular television programs such as “The Voice” and during the NFL draft, and NBA and NHL playoffs. Antisemitism has been on the rise over the last five years. Statistics show that while Jewish people are 2.4% of the U.S. population, they are the targets of 55% of religion-motivated hate crimes. Kraft said the ads will show how non-Jewish people can stand in solidarity with their Jewish neighbors against antisemitism and all types of hate. NCAAWRE – Michigan’s Parris wins Hodge Trophy as top college wrestler Michigan heavyweight Mason Parris has been named winner of the Dan Hodge Trophy as the nation’s top college wrestler. Kraft said the ads will show how non-Jewish people can stand in solidarity with their Jewish neighbors against antisemitism and all types of hate. Casey Moss was best known as J.J. Deveraux on the long-running daytime drama Days of Our Lives. As Moss was toward the end of his run on the show, he earned the role of Scott Baker in the recently released wrestling-themed drama The Last Champion. On Episode 639 of Short Time, Moss talks about his role as Baker in the movie, what it was like to gain the role, his background wrestling growing up in Arizona before we go way off the original topic and talk about his band, Inner Echo, and our favorite concerts of all time. Moss is an intriguing figure who we will hear more from in the years ahead in both music and wrestling. SHORT TIME SHOTS (it’s the scores and such, people) On the Grand View watch, the Vikings extended their win streak to 96 in a row with a 31-6 win over Morningside on Thursday. The NAIA also picked up a notable victory since the last time we met as Southeastern (Fla.)  upended The Citadel from Division I 22-14 in Charleston. Key wins registered by Coleman Bryant (no relation), Indiana transfer Blake Rypel and 197-pounder Trillyon Fils-Aim sealed the deal for the Fire! It was the first win over a Division I program in the short history of SEU wrestling. It’s just the second win over a D1 school in ANY sport, the other was a women’s volleyball win over Bethune-Cookman in 2013, that according to SEU SID Donnie Smith. The NWCA released the Preseason Division II Top 25 and to no one’s surprise, returning champion St. Cloud State sits atop the rankings, which uses tournament points, and I hate tournament points, but that’s none of my business. Nebraska-Kearney, Central Oklahoma, Lindenwood and McKendree round out the top five. The NJCAA also recognized women’s wrestling as an emerging sport on Friday, of the current schools that sponsor varsity wrestling, there are four NJCAA schools of the 89 women’s teams - there’s also a few junior colleges in the Northwest Conference that sponsor wrestling as well. Women’s wrestling will be up to 89 total schools when the first whistle blows in the 2021-22 season as Avila, an NAIA school in Kansas City announced it was adding men’s and women’s wrestling over the weekend. That will put the NAIA at 38 women’s teams and 73 men’s teams. Did you know the NAIA had 19 schools at the 2000 NAIA championships? Of those 19, only 11 of them remain in the NAIA. So think about the growth of scholarship-level wresting in the NAIA over the past 20 years. Bunch of news internationally, Bajrang won the Flo 8-Man Challenge, the Russian Federation kicked ass at the International World Cup and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rallied to be the Atlanta Falcons. Finally, Patrick Kelly passed along some sad news that longtime Britt-West Hancock wrestling coach Al DeLeon passed away on December 16. DeLeon was a two-time All-American for Minnesota State in 1961 and 1962 at 130 pounds. In 1962 DeLeon fell in the NCAA finals to Mickey Martin of Oklahoma Sate.
