The Big Ten has released pre-seeds for its 2025 wrestling championships. The two-day event is slated for this Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9, at Northwestern. Big Ten Network will televise the opening, semifinal, and final sessions. B1G+ will stream the rest of them. Blue-White Illustrated will have complete coverage throughout the weekend as Penn State seeks its thrid straight conference tournament title.Below, we have three things we learned from the pre-seeds, which are not finalized until after Friday's coaches meeting in Evanston but are unlikely to change. You can also watch the BWI Penn State wrestling show and find links to the podcast version.1. The seeds look mostly as expectedUnlike some years, there was little social media outrage about the pre-seeds this year. They look mostly as many anticipated them to. Penn State has five top seeds -- Beau Bartlett (141), Shayne Van Ness (149), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Levi Haines (174), and Carter Starocci (184) -- as expected. Gabe Arnold is in for Iowa instead of Angelo Ferrari at 184 and is the No. 4 seed, which means he could meet Starocci in the semifinals after plenty of trash talk was exchanged before the Hawkeyes-Lions dual meet but Iowa went with Ferrari over Arnold opposite Starocci.Looking back at our roundup of seed projections, there were questions about where sophomore 133-pound starter Braeden Davis would end up. He is at No. 4, which was one potential landing spot. And, while most figured Shayne Van Ness would have the top seed at 149, there was some question about it. But, he did indeed land it.

The No. 1 Penn State wrestling team is ready to close out the dual meet portion of its schedule on Friday when it hosts EIWA program American on Friday night at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions are fresh off clinching a Big Ten regular season title and are gearing up for the postseason. We cover that and much more in this week's BWI wrestling show and pocast.Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start this episode with a review of the team's two most recent wins. Last Friday night, Penn State beat Ohio State 27-13 in Columbus to secure its 69th consecutive dual meet victory. Then, it topped Illinois 29-9 on Sunday to set a Big Ten record with 70 straight wins in addition to winning the conference's dual meet crown. Carr and Pickel discuss the top takeaways, including Beau Bartlett beating Jesse Mendez to earn the No. 1 spot at 141 pounds, freshman Luke Lilledahl bouncing back from being pinned Friday night to record a technical fall triumph on Sunday, and the latest injury information. From there, the show turns its attention to what lies ahead for the Nittany Lions. Sanderson said that the program is dealing with some illness issues, which could impact Friday night's lineup. This year's senior class includes the likes of Bartlett, four-time NCAA champ Carter Starocci, and defending heavyweight champ Greg Kerkvliet, among others.

What is not clear as of Wednesday, however, is whether or not the Nittany Lions will have all 10 of their starters available for matches at Ohio State on Friday and Illinois on Sunday. The Blue-White Illustrated wrestling show is back to discuss last weekend's two wins, the latest on the Lions' injury situation, and what's on the horizon for head coach Cael Sanderson's team.Reporter Greg Pickel and host Thomas Frank Carr start this week's episode with a look back at last weekend. Penn State shutout Michigan 39-0 on Friday. Then, it beat Maryland 35-10 on Sunday. What did we learn from the two victories? The duo discusses that as the Lions took their 67th and 68th consecutive dual meets. From there, the conversation moves on to the injury front. Braeden Davis, the starter at 133 pounds, missed another two matches and has now sat out the team's last three due to injury. Tyler Kasak, meanwhile, had to injury default out of Sunday's bout with Terrapin Ethen Miller. It's not yet clear if either will be available this weekend. The show closes with a look ahead to a Friday night match with No. 5 Ohio State before traveling to No. 19 Illinois. The top bout in Columbus will feature No. 1 Jesse Mendez vs. No. 3 Beau Bartlett at 141 pounds. Mendez beat the Penn State senior in both last year's national final and also at this season's NWCA All-Star Classic. What can fans expect from Penn State this weekend? Penn State wrestling is off and running with the February portion of its schedule. The Nittany Lions have their first double dual weekend of the season on the horizon. Michigan battles head coach Cael Sanderson's team at the Bryce Jordan Center on Friday (6 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network) before Maryland invades Rec Hall at 1 p.m. ET on B1G+.“It's unusual, as we talked about throughout the year, just the scheduling where we got Friday, Friday, Friday, and now we have a Friday, Sunday,” Sanderson said Monday. “But I think these weekends are really good training for the national tournament conference where you have a multiple-day tournament. So, we look at it all as training. And obviously, Michigan's one of the top programs in the country. So we're looking forward to that match, another match in the Jordan Center, and then being able to kind of turn around and wrestle Maryland, who's wrestling really well. I mean, they've done a really good job there, and they've been very competitive.”We cover those matches and much more on this week's Blue-White Illustrated Penn State wrestling show. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start the conversation with the latest news from the recruiting world. The nation's top Class of 2026 recruit, Bo Bassett, picked Iowa over the Nittany Lions and others on Tuesday night.

It returns to the mat this weekend to host Wyoming. We look back at the latest win and ahead to the next matchup on this week's Nittany Lions wrestling show from Blue-White Illustrated.Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start this episode with top takeaways from the victory over the Mountain Hawks. Penn State won nine of 10 bouts. Freshman Luke Lilledahl had a highlight win over Lehigh's Sheldon Seymour at 125 pounds while sophomore Josh Barr beat former Nittany Lion and Lehigh senior Michael Beard by major decision at 197 pounds. What did those results tell us about the outlook for each young Nittany Lion moving forward? Carr and Pickel discuss. Then, they break down what sophomore Braeden Davis' 4-2 to loss to No. 1 Mountain Hawk Ryan Crookham at 133 pounds tells us about where he is at in his new weight class at this early stage of the season. They close out that portion of the show by looking at whether or not the Penn State starting lineup is set in stone yet or not. From there, the conversation turns to this weekend's opponent, Wyoming. The Cowboys and Nittany Lions will meet for the first time. The dual, which is at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, is now at the Bryce Jordan Center. They travel to the PPL Center in Allentown then to take on Lehigh. The dual meet starts at 2 p.m. and will be streamed by FLO.This week's show covers the Lions' second dual meet of the season. First, though, it looks at the situation at 133 pounds. Braeden Davis did not compete at the Army Black Knight Invitational for presumed injury precaution reasons after tweaking his knee in the dual opener against Drexel. He should be back this weekend, though, for a shot at No. 1 Mountain Hawk Ryan Crookham.Davis bumped up to 133 this year after competing at 125 as a freshman. Part of that was natural. The discussion focuses on how familiar wrestlers performed in their new weight classes, Shayne Van Ness' return from injury to dominate in the NWCA All-Star Classic, Braeden Davis' injury, and more. From there, the conversation turns ahead to Cael Sanderson's most recent news conference. What did we learn? Carr and Pickel discuss top takeaways from it, including an update on Davis' status, the head coach's thoughts on star freshman Luke Lilledahl, the decision timeline to pick a starter at 197 pounds (which surely applies to 157, too), and more.#PennState  #NittanyLions  JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationGet the 2024 Penn State Football Preview Magazine at https://bit.ly/PSU24PreviewBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters:  https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State Wrestling Show: Army Black Knight Invitational Preview

The defending NCAA and Big Ten champs open the dual meet portion of their latest slate by hosting Drexel on Nov. 17. Three weeks before that, the team released its updated roster for the year ahead. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel cover that and much more on today's Blue-White Illustrated Penn State wrestling show and podcast. The pair start by reviewing the comings and goings on the roster. Who graduated or otherwise moved on? From there, they dive into a closer look at the newcomers. Penn State did not add any transfer portal additions like it did a year ago. But, it did bring 10 recruits from the Class of 2024 until campus. From there, the pair dive into the confirmed roster changes. They then discuss the projected starting lineup and the best starting spot battle, which is a toss-up between 133 pounds, 157 pounds (if those are even a battle), and 197 pounds (which definitely is).#PennState  #NittanyLions  JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationGet the 2024 Penn State Football Preview Magazine at https://bit.ly/PSU24PreviewBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters:  https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State Wrestling Reveals Roster, Weights for 2024-2025 Season

An all-new episode of the Penn State Wrestling Show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! The Nittany Lions sit one month away from starting their 2024-2025 regular season with Drexel on Nov. 17 at Rec Hall. Of course, there is plenty for host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel to cover in the leadup to that. This week's episode starts with a look at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Defending 285-pound NCAA champion Greg Kerkvliet, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at heavyweight, was set to face No. 3 Nick Feldman of Ohio State on Nov. 16 at Rec Hall. However, Iowa State announced Wednesday that its own heavyweight, No. 6 Yonger Bastida, would be facing Feldman instead. Flo Wrestling, which runs the event, quietly updated its bout sheet to reflect that the Cyclone is replacing Kerkvliet but has otherwise said nothing about the sudden change.Last year, Clay Clarson of South Dakota State was scratched from the exhibition event, sat out the first six weeks of the season due to injury, and was never right during the 2023-2024 season. Conversely, Levi Haines and Jacori Teemer also both scratched off of last year's original Classic bout sheet. But, they both wrestled all year, and Haines beat Teemer, then of Iowa and now of Arizona State, in the NCAA finals. But, they withdrew after the Journeymen Classic, not before. With all of that said, PSU posted a photo of Kerkvliet wrestling hours before this news broke. And, he has been frequently featured on the team's social media account. With no concrete news to share on Kerkvliet's status moving forward, Pickel and Carr discuss what it all might mean moving forward.

The Lions will make the trek across campus to host Iowa inside of the nearly 16,000-seat venue on Fri., Jan. 31. It will then host Michigan there on Fri., Feb. 7. Did the program make the right call to feature those two opponents at the BJC? Pickel and Carr discuss. They then move onto the Collegiate Wrestlign Duals. On Dec. 22, the Lions will face Binghamton, Little Rock, and Missouri. What will those bouts tell us about head coach Cael Sanderson's team ahead of the start of Big Ten action in early January? Pickel and Carr discuss that, as well. You can see the full schedule below.

The defending NCAA champs now sit roughly a month away from kicking off the 2024-2025 season. In the first episode of October, host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel share the latest on the Nittany Lions as they wait to take the mat.The conversation starts with recruiting. Penn State hosted Class of 2025 star Marcus Blaze last weekend, which included a stop at Beaver Stadium to see the football team take on Illinois in primetime. The Perrysburg, Ohio native has not said much publically about his recruitment. We know that his top group consists of Michigan, Cornell, Ohio State, Purdue, and Iowa. A decision from the nation's No. 1 138-pound wrestler and No. 2 pound-for-pound grappler per MatScouts could come at any moment. Pickel and Carr discuss that and also Class of 2026 standout Bo Bassett. He put out his list of official visits this week. One of his stops will be in State College. Here's his current schedule:More: Bo Bassett sets recruiting timeline, official visitsPickel and Carr discuss Bassett's recruitment and when a decisions could be made before moving on to the latest on the Lions' lineup. Last year's 157-pound NCAA champ, Levi Haines, is moving up to 174. Sophomore Tyler Kasak, who finished third at 149 pounds year ago, looks set to replace Haines at 157. The Penn State product punched his ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France by winning four matches in repechage, or the consolation bracket, at 65 kilograms, to finish third and qualify the U.S. and himself for the summer games in that weight class. He beat Sujeet Sujeet of India in the bronze medal match to do so. "Retherford was relentless with his forward pressure throughout the match," USA Wrestling wrote in a recap. "Midway through the first period, Retherford got in deep on a low single, was driving through Sujeet for the finish, but was countered for two. Heading into the second period trailing, 2-0, Retherford's pace paid off. He capitalized on an errant shot attempt by Sujeet for a go-behind takedown, taking the lead on criteria, 2-2. His defense held firm for the rest of the match, cementing the win and his place in the bronze medal Olympic playoff match. Retherford is one of four Nittany Lion Wrestling Club members and six U.S. Team members total going to the summer games. The full list includes: 57 kilograms: Spencer Lee 65 kilograms: Zain Retherford (NLWC) 74 kilograms: Kyle Dake (NLWC) 86 kilograms: Aaron Brooks (NLWC) 97 kilograms: Kyle Snyder (NLWC) 125 pounds: Mason Parris More: Penn State wrestling needs a new assistant coach; who might some candidates be?: Hot board From there, Carr and Pickel discuss Greg Kerkvliet's return to the Penn State program for the 2024-2025 season. What does it mean that he, Carter Starocci, and Beau Bartlett are all coming back? After that conversation, the pair dive into the reaction from David Taylor's introductory news conference at Oklahoma State. And, the two break down what the Nittany Lions might be looking for to replace assistant coach Jimmy Kennedy, who is going to Stillwater with Taylor. This week's episode wraps up with an early look at the 2024-2025 Penn State wrestling lineup at 125 pounds. Who could man the spot this year? The duo break it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK Check out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilD Welcome to Big Ten tournament weekend, Penn State wrestling fans. The No. 1 Nittany Lions look to win another conference crown this weekend in College Park, Md. It would mark their second consecutive one after ending a drought that dated back to 2019 in 2023. Head coach Cael Sanderson's side has multiple top seeds and 10 entrants set to compete at the event. “I think everyone's looking good,” Sanderson said back on Monday. “You know, we just have a couple more days of hard training, and then it's just getting ready to compete and just go do what we do. “I don't think anybody's peaked yet. I think everybody has their eyes set on the bigger events at the end. But yeah, there's some different things, everyone's different. Obviously, different levels of experience. And then weight management is different. So that obviously factors into the training of each individual. I think our our guys are excited and at peace and ready to roll.” It goes without saying that all on hand are aiming to qualify for nationals. But, while that is the focus, there's no question that the top topic of conversation throughout the tournament will be the health and ongoing status of Penn State 174-pound three-time NCAA champion Carter Starocci. He was hurt at the end of his about against Edinboro two Sundays ago. But, Sanderson seemed optimistic when meeting with reporters earlier this week. “We trust our trainer, Dan Monthley, and our doctors and as we've said, Carter's a competitor and he'll be good to go,” Sanderson said. “I think he's doing good. “The first day was tough for him because we didn't really know where he was and he was in a lot of pain. Usually, that's a good thing. If you know knees and injuries and stuff, if there's no pain that's usually more of a concern because that means something's no longer there. He's doing good.” A new episode of the Blue-White Illustrated wrestling podcast starts with the latest on Starocci. From there, host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel offer a weight-by-weight breakdown of the tournament in addition to making predictions for how each Nittany Lion will fare. Watch the show in the embedded video player above. Want to listen to it? Podcast links: SPOTIFY, APPLE. Blue-White Illustrated will have complete coverage of the Penn State wrestling postseason push. The team will try to qualify all 10 starters for nationals at Big Tens. Then, it will take its contingent to Kansas City, Mo., for nationals March 21-23. Bracket information will be announced by the NCAA for that tournament on Wed., March 13. It's SHORT TIME SHOTS … a quick look at the day's top wrestling stories. Here's the good stuff for Friday, October 27.In the U23 World Championships in Tirana, Albania, Kennedy Blades and Audrey Jimenez from the United States earned silver medals in women's freestyle wrestling. Blades dominated her initial matches but lost 9-2 in the finals against UWW's Reetika in the 76 kg category. Jimenez, competing in the 50 kg category, withdrew from her finals match due to injury but still secured a silver medal. Amit Elor, another U.S. wrestler, advanced to the finals in the 72 kg category, pinning her first two opponents. She will face Jyoti Berwal in the finals, aiming for another U23 championship. Meanwhile, Macey Kilty will compete for a bronze medal in the 65 kg category after a strong start but a narrow 5-4 loss in the semifinals against Irina Ringaci. Xochitl Mota-Pettis is also in the hunt for a bronze medal in the 57 kg category, thanks to her first-round opponent advancing to the finals. The U.S. Greco-Roman team will begin their competition on Friday, featuring wrestlers like Phillip Moomey and Robert Perez III.Carter Starocci has announced his return to Penn State for the 2023-24 wrestling season, aiming to become the Nittany Lions' first four-time NCAA champion. Starocci, who recently won his third NCAA title at 174 pounds, also hinted at a potential Olympic run in the 2024 Summer Games. He has the nation's longest active winning streak with 52 straight bouts and is Penn State's sixth three-time champion. The University of Oklahoma announced that its wrestling program will remain in the Big 12 Conference as an affiliate member, even as the university transitions to the Southeastern Conference in 2024. The decision followed a vote by the Big 12's governance group, which includes university presidents and athletic directors. Oklahoma's wrestling program has a storied history, with seven national championships and 24 conference titles, including three in the Big 12 era. Starting July 1, 2024, the Big 12 wrestling membership will feature legacy programs like Iowa State and Oklahoma State, as well as affiliate programs such as Air Force and Missouri. Arizona State will also join as a newcomer in 2024. Iowa wrestling is gearing up for its season debut on November 4 against California Baptist, amid a turbulent offseason and pending NCAA decisions on sports-wagering penalties. Hawkeye coach Tom Brands praised the NCAA for its deliberative approach and emphasized that the athletes facing suspensions have been accountable. The vote on sports-wagering penalties is set for November 8, and Brands is hopeful for a decision that "fits the crime." Abe Assad and Nelson Brands are currently facing NCAA suspensions related to sports gambling and are likely to miss the season's first dual. Both athletes have criticized the NCAA and are awaiting the Division I Council's vote. While other Iowa wrestlers are also believed to be facing suspensions, Assad and Nelson Brands are the only ones to have spoken publicly about the issue. The National Wrestling Coaches Association has released its NCAA Women's Wrestling Preseason Coaches' Poll, with defending national champion North Central College leading the pack. North Central tops the preseason rankings for the second consecutive year, boasting 128 points and 13 ranked individuals, including seven who are ranked No. 1. They are followed by 2022 runner-up King University, which has 67 points and 10 ranked individuals. McKendree is in third place with 60 points and nine ranked wrestlers, while Colorado Mesa is fourth with 51 points and eight ranked individuals. Sacred Heart and Gannon round out the top six, with 29 and undisclosed points respectively, each having four ranked individuals. East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven University, and the University of Iowa are also in the top 10, along with Adrian College. - Menlo College leads the NAIA Women's Wrestling Preseason Top 20, followed by Life University, Grand View, William Penn, and Providence to kick off the 2023-24 women's wrestling season. Reigning national champion Southern Oregon starts the new season ranked sixth. The rankings were determined by a panel of head coaches from each of the five conferences, using a point system based on individual rankings in each weight class. To hear more about the NAIA women's division, check out the latest Short Time Wrestling Podcast, which has the full media day from the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletics Conference. The full breakdown of the day's wrestling news can be delivered to your inbox daily, courtesy of Mat Talk Online's Daily Wrestling Newsletter, delivered by Resilite. Rodgers said March 15 during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on SiriusXM and YouTube that he intends to play for the Jets in 2023. NFL – Patriots owner Robert Kraft campaigns against antisemitism New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has launched a $25-million national ad campaign against antisemitism. Statistics show that while Jewish people are 2.4% of the U.S. population, they are the targets of 55% of religion-motivated hate crimes. Kraft said the ads will show how non-Jewish people can stand in solidarity with their Jewish neighbors against antisemitism and all types of hate. Penn Stated: Talking Penn State Football with Donnie Collins

Season 2 of the Penn Stated podcast kicks off in grand fashion this week as spring weather -- not to mention spring practice in Happy Valley -- is firmly upon us.Host Donnie Collins discusses some of the big questions surrounding the Nittany Lions as camp opens (visit The Times-Tribune to read about some of them), including head coach James Franklin's concerns that leadership will need to begin developing this spring.Donnie also chats with his special guest, former Penn State offensive lineman and West Scranton High School football and wrestling legend Eric Shrive, who looks back on his playing days and what spring football meant to him. Which member of the staff is most important to players at this time of year? Is this really the time of year where position battles begin to get settled? Also, Shrive discusses an important community event coming up Saturday at Scranton High School: The Impact Athlete Wrestling Clinic. A joint venture of the West Scranton Wrestling Alumni Association and the Lehigh Valley Health Network, the event will bring four Penn State wrestlers -- including three-time national champions Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks -- to the area to be guest instructors at the free clinic. All this and more, on the Season 2 debut of the Penn Stated podcast. To contact Donnie, drop an email at dcollins@timesshamrock.com, or send him a message on Twitter @PennStateTT.Listen and subscribe on Apple podcastsListen and subscribe on Google podcastsListen and subscribe on Spotify

In March of 2021 at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in St. Louis, five African-American wrestlers – Iowa State's David Carr, Minnesota's Gable Steveson and the Penn State trip of Roman Bravo-Young, Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks — all won individual championships. It was a high water mark for wrestlers of color, especially African Americans as at the top level of men's college wrestling – Division I – half of the champions were African American, the most in any one single season.  It was historic as much as it was iconic, but for records to be set, there must first be people to do something unique, to do something first, to do something – again - iconic.  This series from Etched in Stone will tell you the in-depth story of Lloyd Keaser – A man who overcame growing up in a segregated community near Baltimore and battled through poverty ad racism on – and off – the mat and through it all, excelled in the classroom and excelled for his country.
