About the Guest(s):Lisa Aquila is a dedicated advocate for disability rights and Vice Chair of the Board at Disability Equality in Education (DEE). Lisa's journey into disability advocacy began after a career as a home care attendant was cut short due to her own disability. As an education outreach specialist, she has been pivotal in lobbying for disability-inclusive curriculum legislation, co-founding the Coalition on Disability Inclusive Curriculum, and advancing the social model of disability. Her work aims to integrate disability discourse into general education, inspiring future generations to embrace diversity.Episode Summary:In this enlightening episode of Think Inclusive, host Tim Villegas welcomes Lisa Aquila, a fervent advocate for disability rights and Vice Chair at Disability Equality in Education. Thank you to our sponsor, Zinnia TV, a therapeutic dementia care platform to support caregivers. We invite you to use the code GATHER20 for 20% off an annual subscription HERE.   I have felt called not to speak for others, but to listen, to learn, and to help share the voices that too often go unheard. I want to amplify the voices of those who have lived the experience, who remind us that life doesn't end with a diagnosis. Through willGather, I've been privileged to meet extraordinary people—care partners, advocates, and those living with dementia—who are actively shaping what it means to live with dementia. Their voices, their wisdom, and their experiences matter. I'm drawn to the work of the Dementia Action Alliance (DAA). Their guiding principle, "Nothing About Us Without Us," isn't just a phrase—it's a movement. It's about listening, about real advocacy, and about making sure that every person living with dementia has a seat at the table. Too often, a diagnosis is handed down like a sentence, with little guidance beyond, "Go home and prepare for the worst."  But that's not the full story. There is another way. A way that prioritizes dignity, advocacy, and community. Today, I'm honored to sit down with a panel of extraordinary individuals who are not only living with dementia but are reshaping the future of how we understand it and who refuse to let their diagnosis define them. Laurie Scherrer, Jack George, Monica Downer, and Tim Perkins each bring a unique perspective—facing the shock of diagnosis, the roller coaster of emotions, and the daily realities of life with dementia. Beyond each of their challenges, they've found resilience, purpose, and community. From advocacy work to artistic expression, from research participation to daily problem-solving, their journeys reveal the power of adapting, growing, and redefining what's possible. So, let's step into their world, and listen with open hearts. To my panel, thank you for your advocacy and for joining me! Although this interview is all about Maryland's Assistive Technology Program, I want to make sure the listeners know every state has a similar program. If you'd like to do more of your own research, I encourage you to check out The Association of Assistive Technology Act Programs (ATAP). From their website, they are "a national, member-based non-profit organization, comprised of state Assistive Technology Act Programs funded under the Assistive Technology Act (AT Act). Established in 1997, the organization strives to enhance the effectiveness of AT Programs on the national, state, and local level. Integrating real world facilitation with online engagement Rebecca Sutherns, CEO of Sage Solutions, co-hosts this week's podcast.  Rebecca shares her insights into the value of facilitated conversations with stakeholder groups and the challenge of facilitation in an era in which people are more focused on the screens of their mobile devices than to the people who may be sitting only feet away. She talks about integrating the richness and value of in-person experiences with online experiences that will reach larger numbers of people. This presents not only the challenge of asking questions to obtain useful responses across media, but also the challenge of interpreting data sets that will vary in both number and richness of data. Let's Talk IAP2 Last September at the IAP2 North American conference in Denver, IAP2 kicked off an examination of its organization and business model. This has been underway at an elite level, driven by a "Change Committee" drawn from North America, Australasia, Indonesia, Southern Africa and Latin America. This week, IAP2 sent an email to members like us inviting us to provide our input on a set of strategic directions that were established by the Change Committee. The intent is to gather member input via the Let's Talk IAP2 website for the next few weeks and then for a consensus decision from national and regional affiliate boards at IAP2 in Victoria. Both Rebecca and I are looking forward to providing our input. However, for me, the fact that IAP2 is consulting members so late in the process, and only consulting members, as opposed to the groups that it is "involving", such as trainers, or empowering (both of those terms are defined in the IAP2 spectrum) elevates my puzzlement at the top-focused nature of IAP2. It is the only membership-based organization that I have participated in that treats members as peripheral to decision-making. That's ironic, when you think about the mission and mandate embodied in the organization's name - the International Association for Public Participation. IAP2 is important to me -- I hope they get it right. Let's Talk IAP2 launched August 8 and runs to August 27. Find out more information at Let's Talk IAP2. Sidewalk goes off the rails? Date: Wednesday, 21st November 2012 Time: Assemble at 2pm, leaving at 2.30pm Where: Central Bank, College Green, Dublin 2, with a march to Leinster House, Kildare St, Dublin 2 This march is for individuals with disabilities and their families. None of the organisations that are part of the Disability Rights Coalition will bring placards with their organisation names on it, and we ask others to respect this by also not bringing banners or placards highlighting issues associated with a service or organisation. Instead of placards with organisation names, we want people to highlight where they are from. Please bring placards with slogans like ‘Ballinasloe says Nothing About Us Without Us’, or ‘Cork says Rights Not Charity’. Please use red card or placards for these banners – we want to send a strong message that we are giving Government a red card. If everyone uses red, then this will be a great visual message. Also, no political party posters. This march is about promoting people’s individual rights. The Disability Rights Coalition are facilitating this protest by sending out information, but we want it to be about individuals with disabilities and their families coming together to support each other in demanding greater equality. The Programme for Government published in March 2011 contained many keys promises to people with disabilities, including “tackling Ireland’s economic crisis in a way that is fair, balanced, and which recognises the need for social solidarity”. But cuts affecting people with disabilities and their families continue to build up, and people are feeling increasingly isolated and abandoned by this Government. This march calls on Government to fully implement Disability Promises in the 2011 Programme for Government.
