With the government's announcement that a review on women’s issues in Singapore will be conducted to look more closely at how gender equality can be more deeply ingrained in Singapore society, we thought to explore the evolution of gender issues in Singapore. The Women's Charter provides a central lens for such an exploration, tracing its origins to pre-independent Singapore and being the platform for debates such as whether men should be entitled to maintenance after divorce or whether NS should extend to women. Join Margaret Thomas, President of AWARE, as she banters with Rovik on some of these sticky issues, and provide your own take by commenting on our FB Page or our Instagram. Our life has no rehearsals, and in this podcast, Mohanji asks the question “How can we live a simple but effective life”. Many people live incredibly complex lives, but they have less and less contentment or satisfaction. The great masters of India lived very simple lives, and whilst they all had their weaknesses, they made the most of their strengths, leading to greatness. Fewer complexities, a better life. Simplicity is one of the most potent traits for an effective life.

Many within Christendom are familiar with the words of Zechariah 9 because of the connection Matthew makes between it and Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. Fewer, however, are aware of the verses that follow. In particular, when the prophet says, “Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope …” This curious phrase was written to those who were exiles in Babylon who had returned to find Jerusalem in ruins because of the Babylonian destruction decades before. Still, after destruction, after exile, after returning to rebuild their city there is a flame that hasn’t gone out: hope. There is no ignoring the pain, suffering, disillusionment, grief and anger the people felt upon their return. Yet, in the midst of this there is hope. There is a future. The story, as it were, is going somewhere. And according to Matthew, the story is moving toward a time when Jesus himself will ride into town. As we begin this season of teaching, we will explore the nature of hope - one that sees itself a part of a larger story. One that believes God wastes nothing.

The one-hundred seventy-first episode, recorded on December 21, 2020. It's the most wonderful time of the strangest year! Time to celebrate the ability of amateur athletes, overpaid administrators, and a global media monopoly to focus our pandemic gaze upon an unending parade of corporate-sponsored exhibition games with all the pomp and circumstance college football requires. It's BOWL SEASON, which means '39 in 39' is BACK and WEIRDER THAN EVER! For the fourth year in a row, we're visited by the Commissioner to discuss 39ish bowls in 39ish minutes. Except this time around we don't have the commissioner, bowls are being canceled AS WE SPEAK, and we are EVEN LESS PREPARED THAN EVER. Obviously this all adds up to a lot to discuss. Fewer bowls! In episode 92, I break down everything I learned this last year - the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Reflecting on the past year is one of the best things you can do for your business. It allows you to see patterns and trends in what’s working best so you can do more of that - and what’s not working as well so you can do less of that. I also talk about not feeling guilty for having a good year in business - despite what’s been going on in the world. Episode Summary: How do you put the world on halt, and tell those you’ve committed to that you just can’t do? How do you draw the line between enough and too much? Who determines what is adequate and appropriate and when we cross the line to excessive? Have you ever wrestled with any of those questions? I think it’s common for us to hope for, and even strive for, a picture-perfect Norman Rockwell Christmas. But the reality is, that picture is fictitious and the longer we strive for that, the more exhausted we become, and the less we enjoy the holidays. Today we’re going to be talking about stressing less at Christmas. Quotables from the episode: So much of our stress at Christmas comes from several key areas: Keeping tradition for tradition sake People pleasing Unrealistic & often unvoiced expectations of ourselves and others Trying to prove something to someone (or yourself) It’s easy to talk about Christmas and refocusing on Christ at Christmas but what does that look like? Resting in His presence Spending time with The Gift (Jesus) and The Gift Giver (Our Heavenly Father) Letting Him take care of us Trading in our to-do list for rest Recognizing what the busyness means/truly reflects Practical Tips for Stressing Less This Christmas: Let each family member choose ONE kind of cookie to be baked and let them help make them Let the lights on the tree, and Christmas cards received, be the tree decorations Let the wrapping of the gifts be the love with which they were purchased Make the Christmas dinner be comprised of each family member’s favorite dish Consider catering the Christmas meal Resolve to be okay with paper plates and napkins so you spend less time in the kitchen and more time with the people you love A hope-filled perspective for a less stressful Christmas: God doesn’t put these heavy burdens on us God invites us into His rest, not for Him but for our benefit God offers us the chance to choose His rest, but He doesn’t force us Fewer expectations means fewer disappointments Scripture References: Luke 10:41-42 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Hebrews 4:1 “God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it…” Recommended Resources: Ways to Create a More Peaceful Christmas Quit Striving for the Picture Perfect Christmas When Doing Less is Actually Doing More at Christmas How to Relieve Stress This Christmas What I Really Want This Christmas Content at Christmas Free Download: How To Fight Fearful/Anxious Thoughts and Win Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Social Media Links for Host: For more hope, stay connected with Dr. Bengtson at: Order Book Breaking Anxiety’s Grip / Order Book Hope Prevails / Website / Blog / Facebook / Twitter (@DrMBengtson) / LinkedIn / Instagram / Pinterest / YouTube / Podcast Hosted By: Dr. Michelle Bengtson Audio Technical Support: Bryce Bengtson
The holiday season in 2020 is a little different. Fewer parties, smaller gatherings, less extravagant gifts… but the season of giving more important than ever.As we reflect on the true meaning of the holidays, I urge you, as a business owner, to think about charitable giving. In addition to being the right thing to do, there are a surprising number of tangible and intangible benefits that come along with supporting your community. The act of giving benefits not only the recipient, but the giver as well — giving grants us a feeling of connectedness and the satisfaction of trying to make the world a better place (or at least one small corner). But this warm and fuzzy feeling is only the tip of the iceberg. Charities and nonprofits often publicize donations given by businesses on their websites and in published literature, serving as incredibly good publicity. Supporting the volunteer groups and nonprofits working for good in your community will help to raise your profile and build a larger customer base, as many people (including myself) choose to support businesses that make an effort to give back.If your profit margins are slim but you still want to support your community, volunteering at events is a great way to network with complementary businesses and community leaders, as well as meet potential customers. This is just one of the many non-monetary options that I share in this episode! As a successful member of your community, you have the resources to help the less fortunate. And this extends beyond the holiday season. Consistent giving keeps your business at the forefront of community consciousness, continuously building goodwill and loyalty. And there is no better time to start than now!“Chances are, you’ve been given gifts, opportunities, and help along the way. I encourage you to pay it forward.”— Melissa HoustonIn this episode, we’ll explore:The tangible and intangible benefits to charitable giving (both financial and personal)The countless ways that you can support your community without impacting your bottom line Six important reasons for your business to give back often and generouslyHighlights:00:46 Gratitude02:19 The season of giving in 202003:40 Why give back as a business?06:50 Beyond writing a cheque09:40 How giving benefits you12:17 Six reasons to give back19:10 Spread the loveLinks:The CFO Money Methodhttps://melissahoustoncpa.lpages.co/the-cfo-money-method-lead-magnet/Work with mehttps://www.melissahoustoncpa.com/work-with-meWant more tips and inspiration? Many industries have faced an existential threat from Covid lockdowns. How well have companies adapted to the unprecedented challenges of 2020? Strelmark president Hilary Fordwich takes us through the nuts and bolts of re-thinking how to safely and efficiently run a business while prioritizing the health of employees. Fewer open work environments and a sweeping transition to online operations have become status quo during this socially distant era. Plus – Don’t let Amazon’s Alexa spill the beans this holiday season! An explainer on how to keep your digital companion from spoiling gift arrivals. As if Covid restrictions weren’t enough of a financial strain on businesses, major missteps by international construction giant Skanska have put a Florida community into an even tighter economic chokehold. Attorney Sara Papantonio discusses how the Pensacola Bay Bridge has been out of commission for the past three months after sustaining heavy damage during Hurricane Sally. Because of Skanska’s negligence, thousands of commuters have had their daily regimens completely rewritten. Plus – Rampant unemployment doesn’t just pose a threat to working stiffs, but to retirees as well. FDR’s own grandson is sounding the alarm as vanished paychecks mean a halt in contributions to our social security program, which was already in dire straits before the pandemic.
Good morning, RVA! It’s 37 °F, but don’t even worry about it because today’s highs should end up somewhere in the 60s. That sounds lovely. Expect similarly warm, great weather throughout the weekend.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 3,915↗️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 54↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 343↗️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 95, Henrico: 157, and Richmond: 91). Since this pandemic began, 493 people have died in the Richmond region. Here’s this week’s stacked graph of daily, statewide new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. I had to change the y-axis several times since this past Friday. Also, here’s the graph of daily new cases in Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield. It finally happened. Yesterday, the governor announced new, state-wide restrictions to help slow the increasingly rapid spread of disease. You can read through the aforelinked press release, or dive into the full text of Executive Order 72 here. The headliner: A 12:00 AM–5:00 AM curfew (with a bunch of caveats for: getting food, seeking medical attention, taking care of individuals or animals, child care, exercise, work, worship, and volunteering).Additionally:Everyone five and up needs to wear masks “in indoor settings shared with others and when outdoors within six feet of another person”Social gatherings must be limited to 10 people instead of 25 (religious services, employment settings, educational settings, restaurants, and retail stores are exempt)Fewer spectators can attend rec sportsAnd “employees that can telework are strongly encouraged to do so.”There may be a few more things, but I haven’t yet line-by-lined the EO. About the new restrictions, Governor Northam said, “We already have strong public health measures in place, and with these additional steps, we can turn this around. Virginians, if you don’t have to be out, stay at home. Whenever we are around other people, we all need to wear a mask, indoors and out.” And Mayor Stoney had this to say “The Governor’s enhanced public health protocols are common sense steps to keep our city and Commonwealth safe during this latest surge. This community has worked too hard, sacrificed too much to let our guard down now. Stay safe, wear your mask and stay at home from midnight to 5 a.m.”So, will any of these new restrictions work to slow the spread of the virus? Probably! To stay with the Swiss cheese metaphor, these new restrictions are certainly all new layers to add to our cheesestack—some with bigger holes than others. If Virginians comply, which, I think, is an open question, then, yes, these restrictions will help. Will they help a lot? I have no idea. They could have been way stricter, that’s for sure. For example, if you’d have asked me to pick a window to curfew, I’d not have picked the five hours during which most—but not all!—folks are asleep. Honestly, out of all of those things, I think the plea for teleworking has the potential to do the most good but is just kind of thrown in there at the end without any teeth to it. With the end-of-year holidays on the horizon and the specter of infinite intimate gatherings approaching, I’m nervous about what the future holds. Also, it sounds like the Governor’s team learned from their pre-Thanksgiving announcement, and this time clearly stated that these new restrictions begin at 12:01 AM on Monday December 14th and end on January 31st.Kenya Hunter at the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the Virginia Education Association has called for school systems to go virtual. The Gov continues to defer to the local school districts to make those decisions, and I think that puts a lot of dang pressure on these elected school boards and volunteer school health committees. I wonder what happens when schools and county governments don’t end up on the same page? Would a stronger position from state government officials empower school decision-makers to follow their hearts?Mayor Stoney recorded and released this video in support of Richmond 300, and it is packed full of great reasons why City Council should approve the plan this coming Monday. I still think it’s bananas that we’re even talking about whether or not Council could decide to disregard years of citizen work and engagement. If Councilmembers think the plan does not go far enough, cool, would have been good to know that literal years ago, and would have been good to get yourself and your constituency involved in the process earlier than the week before the final vote. Those Councilmembers should first vote to pass the plan and then commit to working deeply with city residents on an amendment to the plan—a process they’re all familiar with as they’ve done it before. I often wonder what Richmond would look like if we could spend more of our time working to build better things instead of spending so much our time trying to prevent things from being destroyed. You can find email addresses for all members of City Council and their liaisons here. This morning’s longread“Facebook Has Destroyed This F–king Town”: Facing a Legal Onslaught, Mark Zuckerberg Gets Ready to Fight BackThis breaking up Facebook stuff is wild! For the last several years, we’ve been hearing murmurs about a legal sledgehammer being taken to Facebook by regulators, not just in the U.S., but around the globe. And indeed, government entities and countless countries have been trying. Facebook has been embroiled in antitrust-related legal battles with European Union regulators, as well as with individual countries across Europe, including Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. And now, as of Wednesday’s antitrust action, with 48 states—48!—across the United States and with the Federal Trade Commission—not to mention previous actions by the Securities and Exchange Commission, investigations by the Justice Department, and a long list of other legal battles. Even Mark Zuckerberg himself has invited Congress to regulate his company, though for data collection and privacy protections, not for being too big. Abdus Luqman of Luqman Nation joins us to discuss police reform and what police want from a Biden administration. A recent CNN article tries to rehabilitate or at least cast a blind eye towards policing. The article revolved around a survey of almost 400 police chiefs across the US, administered by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), which asked law enforcement leaders to identify priorities for the incoming administration. "A clear majority said they hope the Biden administration will help increase trust in police, with 76% calling it a priority, and 57% wanting to address calls for police reform," CNN noted. "Fewer than half of respondents - 43% - said crime reduction was among their top three priorities for next year."David Rosen, author of “Prohibition New York City: Speakeasy Queen Texas Guinan, Blind Pigs, Drag Balls & More,” joins us to give an update on the case of Ghislaine Maxwell - friend and confidant of the late sex criminal, financier and friend to the American political elite Jeffrey Epstein - and a recent bombshell about former US President Bill Clinton. The Clinton bombshell comes from a Vanity Fair interview with the former president’s longtime aide, Doug Band. Band insisted that he knew nothing of Epstein’s misdeeds, but “got enough bad vibes that he advised Clinton to end the relationship,” the outlet noted. Band also said he refused to accompany Clinton on a 2003 visit to Epstein's private island of Little St. James, claiming it was among the few trips he did not take with Clinton while working for him. A spokesperson for Clinton told Vanity Fair that the visit never happened. How many people sort of knew enough to joke about this, but figured as long as they weren’t trafficking people themselves, their hands were clean?Elisabeth Myers, lawyer and adjunct associate professor of law at the American University Washington College of Law, democracy lead at Democrats Abroad Morocco and former editor-in-chief of Inside Arabia, joins us to discuss reform in Saudi Arabia and the nation's role in global politics. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) at one point envisioned Saudi Arabia living without oil by 2020, which observers at the time said was not meant to be taken literally. Has Saudi Arabia made much progress diversifying its economy under MBS?Brianna Griffith, producer and host of the People's Republic radio show in Austin, Texas, joins us to discuss why Texas never turns blue, the eviction crisis in the state and retired US Army Gen. Lloyd Austin being nominated to head the Department of Defense for the Biden administration.Ron Placone, comedian and host of “Get Your News On With Ron,” joins us to discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the film industry. This pandemic has been difficult for people who make their money touring and performing, but while the US government has decided the show definitely doesn’t need to go on for them, if you’re a multibillion-dollar film studio or, God help us, mobile phone application, well, by all means, don’t let a little thing like a pandemic get in your way. Last week, a very busy coronavirus testing site at Union Station in Los Angeles, California, was almost shut down for filming of a remake of the movie "She’s All That," which has cast a TikTok star in a leading role. Now, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti is trying to save face.
What strategies can marketers learn from nonprofits about building brand advocacy? Successful nonprofits know what it takes to get people to rally behind a belief or cause. Brands that turn their best customers into advocates build brand loyalty and drive sales. The mainstream sports fan probably only spends about six minutes watching horse racing in a given year -- the combined running time of the three Triple Crown races. A smaller subset will follow the 14 million-dollar races run over Breeders Cup weekend. Fewer still will watch the graded stakes races that lead up to the Kentucky Derby. Almost no one pays attention to the claimers, the largest segment of the racing world. This oversight costs them the chance to follow the same kind of stories that draw them in on Derby Day. Just because an event plays out beyond the spotlight's reach doesn't mean there aren't compelling stories to follow. For 21 years, the horses on the lowest rung of competitive racing and their human connections have had their day: the Claiming Crown, to be run again this year at Gulfstream Park. In this episode, we share the story of the biggest raceday with the biggest purses and the best fields available to the sport's little guys.Thank you to Dan Metzger of TOBA and Eric Hamelback of the National HBPA for all of your help in putting this story together, and to everyone who made themselves available during a busy race week to talk about the Claiming Crown: Mike Maker, Ken Ramsey, Peter Walder, and my go-to horse guy, Steve Schubert. Big thanks to Gulfstream Park and Canterbury Park for the calls from Claiming Crowns past, and to Denis Blake and Coglianese Photos for the action photo of Leitone from his win in the 2019 Claiming Crown Jewel. Thank you, as always, to our friends who make every episode possible: Electra-Craft, Everipe, and Soggy Doggy. If Cash is King, how much cash does your business need to enjoy that royalty status? Everyone talks about how important cash is in a small business, but few entrepreneurs take the time to really understand their cash position. Fewer still will be able to know how much cash they actually need to operate their business. Far too many businesses don't have enough cash in their business and just keep moving forward hoping that nothing bad will happen to them. They operate unprepared and don't even know it. And many other businesses mistakenly assume that more cash is always better. They hold too much cash in reserve which actually slows growth and ultimately makes their business less competitive. The correct amount of cash is known as your Targeted Cash Balance. To learn about this amazing yet simple tool, join us for this week's episode.
Imagine if the world was rebooted to its factory settings. Not a hard reboot, where everything was erased, but one that would reset our way of living, allowing us to return to the previous setting and ignore the changes made in recent years. What would you do to reset based on what you've learned from the history of time and do differently if you had no constraints? We currently stand in the midst of a global pandemic. Whilst it has had a devastating effect on the world, it has also shown us that many behaviors and practices we once thought unchangeable could be improved, and that many outcomes thought impossible were achievable. Reduced travel has improved air quality. Fewer vacations have transformed water quality in popular holiday resorts. Cities freed of congested traffic can once again be enjoyed by walkers and cyclists without their worrying about inhaling dangerous fumes. Whilst no one would choose a global pandemic to understand what is possible, it has provided us with a temporary cleanse of the modern world and an opportunity to reassess the anachronisms that we endured, showing these as unfit for modern life.Roy Sharples and Gary Burt provide perspective on a people-first manifesto for rebooting the world by discussing how Education, Public Policy, Culture, Economics, Politics, and Society, can be reshaped for the benefit of Humanity.Web: www.unknownorigins.comTwitter: UnknownOrigins9Instagram: unknownoriginsuo77Music composed and performed by Iain MutchUnknown Origins. Fewer than 100 attorneys in the nation have attained the EPLS designation. He has also been awarded the international TEP designation from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. In addition to numerous professional positions, Eido is the President for the Village of Bayside, Wisconsin, and serves on several subcommittees, and county-wide committees. WHAT U.S. POLITICS MEANS FOR EVS From Reuters: "Biden is expected to quickly reinstate the legal basis for California’s zero-emission vehicle rules and begin the process of reversing the Trump administration’s decision to ease fuel efficiency and carbon emission requirements through 2025. Automakers could also face sharply higher penalties for failing to meet fuel-efficiency requirements. The Trump administration rolled back those penalties, which the industry said saved at least $1 billion in annual compliance costs, but a federal appeals court in August reversed the administration action." https://www.reuters.com/article/usa-election-autos-biden-idUSKBN27608S That said, Biden is also looking to bolster the EV economy in ways that appeal to automakers: via tax incentives for buyers as well as the development of a more comprehensive national charging infrastructure according to Jalopnik. On a coaching call the other day, I was asked about my most effective way to grow my audience. You can get more podcast engagement in 5 easy steps. DOUBLE DOWNLOADS Over the last four months, I have been able to use this system to double my downloads and increase my e-mail list by 60%. When I look back at some of the greatest personal and business successes in my life, I have to admit that I didn't achieve the majority of them alone. If you look at your own successes, I'm sure you will come to the same conclusion. My audience doubled and my e-mail grew by doing one thing. I partnered with others. Two minds are better than one. Over the past four months, I have appeared on summits, on podcasts and in giveaways. I have leveraged the audience of others to grow incredibly fast. I have always believed that my ability to develop long-lasting relationships and build mutually beneficial partnerships with others is my secret superpower. Strategic partnerships are the most powerful way to scale any venture. Find people who can help you double your results. Connect and collaborate. COLLABORATE If you want to join an amazing event that will help you follow this path, check out www.podcasttalentcoach.com/Collaborate. At the upcoming, highly anticipated live virtual event COLLABORATE November 13 - 15, you will have opportunities to build these powerful alliances and find your ideal joint venture partners. You will be among hundreds of top leaders and experts that have already signed up to attend. Don't worry … there are plenty of people just getting started as well. If you have been going it alone, or need to scale your results to an even higher level by bringing in more joint venture partners, this event is a must-attend for you. See full details and register at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/Collaborate. This will be my third time attending Collaborate. It happens on Zoom and it is a lot of fun, even if networking makes you uncomfortable. At the beginning of event, you will learn how to refine your collaborating pitch. You learn how to tell others what you do and how to explain what makes a great partner for you. Then over the weekend, you will take part in about 20 small networking circles. These are groups of about 8 people. Everyone gets 2 minutes to explain what they do and how they can partner. If someone sounds like a great partner for you, the two of you agree to exchange info and connect at a later date. The first time I attended, I met 40 people that made sense as partners for me. This is how I've been part of summits, giveaways and podcasts. It was great. At the next event, I decided to be much more selective on my partner selections. I still found 20 people as potential partners. What could 20 partners help you accomplish in the next year? If you had 20 people promoting your podcast and programs to their audience, how could your audience and engagement grow? Here is your chance to make those connections. Visit www.podcasttalentcoach.com/collaborate. ENGAGEMENT Let's talk about the five steps to create engagement with your audience. These steps are going to sound easy. The concepts are easy to understand. You simply need to be diligent and consistent about implementing each. ASK First, ask for engagement. If you want engagement, you must ask. Your audience won't engage with your show unless you ask them to do so. If you want them to e-mail you, ask. If you want them to share the show with others, tell them how. People don't know what you want unless you tell them. Be specific. SHOW AND TELL That bring up the second step. Offer an example. Show them what engagement looks like. Many podcasters say, "Find the details in the show notes." I listened to podcasts for about 3 years before I figured out where I could find the show notes. Don't assume people know how to subscribe to your show. Your listeners may not know where to find your show notes. If you want them to e-mail their questions, show them an example of a great question. EASY The third step is the ease of engagement. Make it easy for your listeners to engage. Nobody wants to jump through 3 hoops to help you. "Visit the website. Click about. Scroll down a third of the page. Look on the right and find the green button. Click that and visit that webform. Fill out the form and click submit. Check your e-mail for the link you'll get. Click that link and submit your question." You lost me at scroll down. If it isn't easy, you won't get action. Easy also means FEWER options. Many people think more options are better. That is false. If I suggest you e-mail me, text me or visit the website to submit your question, you now have to decide which is better for you. This is just more work. More decisions mean your listener needs to evaluate the options, decide which is best for them, and then take action. Too much work. If you have multiple options, rotate them through different episodes. Offer the e-mail this week and the texting next week. LOCATION The fourth step is engagement location. Engage where they are. If you listeners love chatting on Facebook, don't try to get them to comment on your YouTube channel. When your listeners are comfortable e-mailing you, stick with it. Don't waste your time trying to get them to text you if that isn't their preferred method of communication. You need to get out of your comfort zone and go play where your listeners play. If they are in Facebook groups, be seen in Facebook groups. If there is another podcast they love, find ways to partner with that podcast. Be where your listeners are. BENEFIT Finally, include a benefit to engagement. This is the fifth step. A benefit could be a lead magnet or other piece of value they receive for engaging. Maybe everyone who e-mails you receives your checklist or cheat sheet. Benefit could also simply be highlighting them on the show or answering their question. When you answer their question, give them love. Direct people to them. When engagement benefits the listeners, they are more likely to engage. 8 IDEAS If you would like a ton of engagement ideas, I have created a resource for you. It is 75 Ways To Drive Engagement With Your Podcast. You can get it at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/engage. The ideas are separated into half a dozen different categories. Here are 8 of those ideas. Run for office by meeting as many people as possible. People vote for those they have met. Ask great questions. Have listeners submit questions for question of the week. They get attention. Create a crowdsourced episode. Include a link to engage in your e-mail signature. Ask your listeners to share. Create community. Highlight members. Create partnerships to promote each other. Get more on the idea list at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/engage. Come join me at Collaborate. It will be the best 3 days you could spend to make the next year larger and more successful that you can imagine. Get all the details at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/collaborate. I can't wait to see what you accomplish. Let's turn your information into engaging entertainment.
At the age of 50, Anthony Reed co-founded the National Black Marathoners’ Association with his friend, Charlotte Simmons. Fifteen years later, they have grown from 2 people to about 16,000 members! He’s also one of about sixty people in the world, who completed the marathon “hat trick.” having finished over 100 marathons, completing a marathon on all seven continents, including Antarctica. (Fewer than 225 people in the world have done that and he’s the first black person in the world to accomplish that feat.) The last part of that hat trick includes finishing marathons in all 50 states. He is now 65 years old, and still running. He has published five books. His sixth and latest book is From the Road Race to the Rat Race: Essays from a Black Executive Marathoner. In this episode, we talk about the mindset required to bust through personal limits and what drives him to excel.

On today’s show we’re trying to make sense of some of the latest statistics that are being reported in terms of national home sales. A new report yesterday in the Wall Street Journal reported that home sales rose to a new 14-year high in September, bolstered by robust demand and a shortage of homes for sale that is making the housing market one of the brightest spots for the U.S. economy. Existing-home sales are up 9.4% in September from August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 6.54 million, the highest rate since May 2006, according to the National Association of Realtors. The September sales represent a 20.9% increase from a year earlier. The numbers of August sales were similarly glowing. The August existing home sales were up 9.1% compared with 2019. All of this points to a booming housing market, one of the brightest spots in the economy. But here’s the problem. Depending on how you slice and dice the data you can construct a different narrative, a different explanation of what it happening. We all know that we went through an artificial downturn in housing sales in the Spring. This was the result of widespread shutdowns of the economy and the shelter in place orders that were in effect for close to 90 days across major parts of the nation. If you compare sales in the first 9 months of 2019, to the first 9 months of 2020, we have not yet matched the sales volume of 2020. In fact, in the year to date we have only sold 97.9% as many houses compared with 2019, a reduction of 2.1% compared with this time last year. Are we having a booming market? Are we just catching up from the shutdown in the spring? The number of home sales in 2018 were higher, 2017 were higher, 2016 were higher. You would have to go back to 2015 to find a rate of home sales that are on par with the year to date numbers for 2020. Yes, we’ve had a strong recovery in home sales. But comparing the September 2020 statistics to the same period last year makes no sense. It’s not a reasonable comparison. It’s a little bit like putting a dam in a river that flows continuously. You then open the dam and say “Wow look at how much water there is.” No kidding Sherlock. It may be amazing how much water is flowing, but not surprising. The pundits that are used to reporting statistics a certain way, are continuing to do so. Why? Because that’s how they’ve always done it. There’s nothing normal about 2020 in any way. So if you’re going to quote statistics, you need to look at the big picture. I’m tired of seeing the weekly unemployment numbers being reported by the bureau of labor and statistics. Fewer people filed for unemployment this week, so they conclude the economy is on the mend. These types of reports are ridiculous to be quite frank. It’s not just the National Association of Realtors who do this. Virtually every real estate board is quoting statistics the same way. Why? Because that’s how they’ve always done it. Even in my home city of Ottawa Canada, the same thing is happening. Last week, the September numbers were published for my home town. The numbers are amazing. Sales volumes are up 35.1% compared with the same month in 2019. Hurray. But if you zoom out and look at the big picture, sales volume is down 4.9% compared with the comparable first 9 months of 2019. Look folks, I have no problem with taking a look at statistics. They can be very helpful in determining what is happening in the market. But when statistics are published, I urge you to apply your own thinking and analysis to what the numbers mean. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think anyone is out to mislead you about what is happening in the market. Don’t just accept a journalists interpretation as the truth because it may not be the entire picture.

by Daniel Bortz The pandemic’s latest effect on the housing market could be a good one for borrowers: Fewer mortgages are requiring a home appraisal, which is making it a whole lot easier for some people to purchase a home or qualify for a loan refinance. According to a September report from the public policy think tank American Enterprise Institute, appraisals were waived on 42% of all government-sponsored purchase and refinance mortgages in July, up from roughly 20% in December.
