Welcome to your Daily Detroit for Monday, December 2, 2024. Jer Staes and Fletcher Sharpe get into the latest happenings in Southeast Michigan. As we approach the end of the year, we reflect on resolutions, goals, and unexpected developments in the city. Our first story revolves around General Motors' bold announcement to demolish Detroit's iconic Renaissance Center if public funding isn't secured for its renovation plans with Dan Gilbert's Bedrock. The proposal faces skepticism from lawmakers and pushback from local architects and preservationists. Jer and Fletcher debate whether this threat is a bluff and discuss the potential impacts on Detroit's skyline. The company, formed from the merger of PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler, faces significant financial challenges and a search for a new leader. The discussion touches on the future of iconic brands like Jeep and Chrysler and the evolving automotive market. Why did they let Chrysler lose their swagger? The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory on Belle Isle is set to reopen on December 4th. This historic gem, designed by George Mason and Albert Kahn, has been a beloved part of Detroit since 1904. We get into its rich history and the excitement surrounding its reopening. In sports, the Detroit Lions bolster their defense by signing former All Pro safety Jamal Adams. Despite recent injuries, Adams' versatility is seen as a valuable addition to the team. Fletcher Sharpe provides insights into what this means for the Lions' defense. Finally, we turn our attention to the Detroit Pistons. Despite a 9-13 record, the team is showing promise. Fletcher highlights the impact of players like Cade Cunningham and Malik Beasley, as well as the positive changes under new coaching. There's hope for a playoff push as the Pistons continue to develop and grow. Daily Detroit shares what to know and where to go in Metro Detroit every single day on our podcast and newsletter. **Stellantis Recalls 1.2 Million Vehicles Over Camera Glitch Issue**In a significant move affecting the automotive industry, Stellantis, the auto giant resulting from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group, has announced a massive recall of 1.2 million vehicles across the United States. The recall has been triggered by a critical glitch associated with the vehicles' rearview cameras, underlining the increasing role of technology in automotive safety and the challenges it poses.Rearview cameras have become a standard safety feature, essential for providing drivers with a clear view of the area behind the vehicle while reversing, thus significantly reducing the risk of accidents. However, glitches in these systems can nullify these safety benefits, potentially putting drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk. The detected glitch involves a malfunction where the rearview camera image may not display or may experience a delay in appearing on the screen. This fault compromises the driver's ability to see behind the vehicle immediately after starting and placing the vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of accidents, especially in situations requiring quick maneuvers.Stellantis's decision to recall such a substantial number of vehicles underscores the company's commitment to safety and its responsiveness to technical shortcomings in its vehicles. It also highlights the complexities and challenges automotive manufacturers face as vehicles become increasingly reliant on sophisticated technology for safety features.Vehicle owners affected by the recall will be notified by Stellantis. They will be instructed to take their vehicles to a dealership, where the necessary fixes to the rearview camera systems will be applied. These services will be provided at no extra cost to the vehicle owners, ensuring that the safety issue is resolved without placing an additional financial burden on them. This recall is a reminder of the critical importance of continuous monitoring and updating of vehicle software and hardware systems. As cars become more like rolling computers, with an ever-increasing emphasis on digital features and autonomous capabilities, manufacturers and regulators alike must remain vigilant to ensure that these advances do not compromise passenger safety.Stellantis's swift action to address the rearview camera glitch is a positive example of how automotive companies can proactively manage safety issues. It also acts as a call to the industry to maintain high standards of quality control and to be ready to take decisive action when problems are identified, ensuring the safety and trust of their customers worldwide.

Two divisions of newly formed car giant Stellantis face fraud charges in a sweeping investigation into the manipulation of diesel vehicles in emissions testing. The automaker, established by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group earlier this year, said that a French court had charged its Peugeot and Citroen brands with consumer fraud. The Peugeot probe concerns vehicles sold in the country from 2009 to 2015. French prosecutors, according to Reuters, found in a 2019 investigation that some vehicles emitted 10 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxide.Peugeot was reportedly ordered to pay $36 million to guarantee potential payouts in the case, while Citroen would need to guarantee more than $30 million in payouts.A third Stellantis brand, FCA Italy, was directed to appear before the court next month as part of the same investigation.Stellantis said its companies are assessing their defense options and that it believes its emissions systems met all requirements in place at the time. The long-running investigation was sparked by the discovery of Volkswagen's cheating on U.S. emissions tests in 2015. Another European carmaker, France's Renault, was also charged in the probe this week.
FOLLOW UP: VW REPAID BY EXECUTIVESVolkswagen has now confirmed the story that former executives of the Group will repay around $351 million as a result of the #dieselgate debacle. PSA was further along in investing in EVs before its merger with Fiat, having made plans for a roughly 5 billion-euro project with oil giant Total that is backed by the French government. WORKPLACE CHARGERS CAN ATTRACT TOP TALENT"ChargePoint, one of the world's largest EV charging networks, focuses on the places where people tend to spend time outside the home, like movie theaters, shopping centers, and libraries. But as it continues to grow its global network of 112,000 plug-in spots, it has put much of its focus on the places where Americans once spent most of their waking lives, and to which they're steadily returning: the office. VW GROUP CHIEF SAYS COMPANY MUST DEVELOP ITS OWN IN-HOUSE SOFTWARE "As you may be aware, Volkswagen – as well as other legacy automakers – has been struggling with software issues related to its new I.D. family of electric cars. VW Group boss Herbert Diess is clearly aware that something needs to change, and quickly, especially if it is going to compete with Tesla going forward." says InsideEVs: "During a recent meeting with his team, Diess said VW must develop its own in-house software to solve problems and move forward. Third-party software solutions, while potentially a decent temporary band-aid, simply won't cut it, according to Diess. As Volkswagen moves forward with a long list of future EVs, it can't have a repeat of what happened with ID.3 and ID.4 related to delays, mostly attributed to software concerns. If this continues to plague the automaker, people will quickly grow tired of taking delivery of "unfinished" products." https://insideevs.com/news/493991/vw-chief-in-house-software/ DIESS SAYS NEIN TO HYDROGEN FUEL CELL CARS & TRUCKS "Lots of people think using hydrogen to power cars and trucks is a good idea. After all, the only waste products of fuel cells are water vapor and heat. What could be more climate friendly than that? That’s the theory, anyway. But Herbert Diess, chairman of the board for the Volkswagen Group, says the reality is very different. “You won’t see any hydrogen usage in cars. Not even in 10 years, because the physics behind it are so unreasonable.” according to the ever-billiant Clean TEchnica: "Some industry executives think hydrogen could be a zero-emissions fuel for heavy trucks that need to travel more than 300 km. Battery-powered trucks are fine and dandy up to that point, but they say beyond that, the weight of the batteries needed takes away from the amount of cargo a truck can carry. Once again, Diess disagrees. Volkswagen, which owns truck makers SCANIA and MAN, stopped all development work on fuel cells for trucks last month." https://cleantechnica.com/2021/03/11/diess-says-nein-to-hydrogen-fuel-cell-cars-trucks/ PEUGEOT AIMS FOR 100% ELECTRIFICATION BY 2023 "Peugeot plans to have a range that is 100% electrified by 2023, in an announcement that exceeds previous planning. A “100 per cent electrified fleet” means that Peugeot will no longer offer pure petrol or diesel as new cars from 2023. However, the French company has not specified what level of electrification it is aiming for – a 48-volt mild-hybrid is considered electrified, but cannot cover significant distances purely electrically and drives like a pure combustion engine for the customer. Based on the PSA platforms CMP and EMP2, Peugeot already offers battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids today." says Next Green Car: "In 2018, the PSA Group announced it would offer offshoots with electric or hybrid drives for all 40 models of its brands by 2025 and that it wanted to achieve an electrification rate of 80 per cent by 2023. At least for the Peugeot brand, the electrification quota is now set to reach 100 per cent by 2023." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9109/peugeot-aims-for-100-electrification-by-2023/ AUDI E-TRON ELECTRIC SUV JOINS THE MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION SQUAD IN THE UK FROM £1,299 "Brits on the lookout for an electric vehicle without the hassle of full ownership can get the Audi E-Tron for a monthly fee of £1,299 (equal to $1,813)." says CarScoops: "Launched in partnership between Audi and subscription provider Onto, who just purchased 300 units of the E-Tron Black Edition, the program includes driving for up to 1,000 miles (1,609 km) per month, insurance, servicing, breakdown cover and up to 1,000 miles worth of free charging at the BP Pulse and Shell Recharge networks. Available in the 55 quattro variant with a 235-mile (378-km) WLTP-certified range, the E-Tron Black Edition uses two electric motors that generate a combined 402 HP. The 95 kWh battery supports DC fast charging of up to 150 kW, taking around half an hour to be recharged to 80 percent." https://www.carscoops.com/2021/03/audi-e-tron-electric-suv-joins-the-monthly-subscription-squad-in-the-uk-from-1299/ ELECTRIC HIGHWAY COALITION TO ADD EV FAST CHARGERS "Six major utilities have a plan to ensure that electric vehicle drivers have access to a seamless network of charging stations connecting major highway systems from the Atlantic Coast, through the Midwest and South, and into the Gulf and Central Plains regions." re[prts Renewable Energy Magazine: "The Electric Highway Coalition – made up of American Electric Power, Dominion Energy, Duke Energy, Entergy Corp., Southern Co., and the Tennessee Valley Authority – announced a plan to provide EV drivers seamless travel across major regions of the country through a network of DC fast chargers for EVs. There's no word on payload, but maximum towing capacity is a claimed 3,000 pounds. Range is estimated at 250 miles or 275 miles, depending on configuration. he Wolf is much smaller than today's "compact" pickups — two feet shorter than the smallest Tacoma Access Cab, for example. The Alpha Wolf's size, and its styling, are suggestive of Japanese compact pickups from the '80s/'90s. Alpha Wolf pricing ranges from $36,000 to $46,000. The company is taking reservations now but has previously said it won't start delivering vehicles until 2023. The two 1970 Mustang Boss 429 Fastbacks, one in Grabber Blue and the other Grabber Green, are both equipped with 429 CI V-8 engines and paired to 4-speed transmissions. John dishes on their race-inspired origins including their Kar Kraft connection. Then it’s on to some automotive industry news, with Matt sharing how the merger behind FCA and the PSA Group has been finalized and the new organization Stellantis has been launched. John gives a recap of how Chrysler’s ownership has evolved and changed over the years leading up to this newest development. Then, it’s on to the rollout of a new On the Move feature presented by State Farm and called Surprisingly Great Questions, where Matt and John will answer listener questions, with today's focus on the world of electric vehicles. Matt tackles the assortment of queries ranging from how far an EV can go on a single battery charge and how to find a charging station. In the second segment, Matt is on the line with Matt Berger, fourth-generation owner of the legendary Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Founded in 1926, the family has carried on the tradition of selling American iron, and that rang especially true in the 1960s, when the locale was buzzing with high-performance parts, Corvettes and COPO Camaros. Matt Berger has kept the legacy alive, sharing his early memories of riding in his dad’s many Corvettes and his involvement with his own high-performance programs including the fourth-generation Camaro efforts with speed shop tuner GMMG. The guys then talk about the dealership's effect on the world of car collecting, seen most recently at Mecum’s Muscle Car City auction where two of the high sellers were Camaros that had been sold through the legendary locale. Wrapping up the episode, Matt and John are reporting another On the Move REView, this time recapping hundreds of miles behind the wheel of a 2021 Dodge Charger RT. Both guys like the big, comfy car and certainly the rumble of the exhaust, yet they ponder how much longer the successful magic muscle car formula Dodge has concocted will continue to work.

Samsung's Jay Y Lee gets 30 months in prison for bribery A South Korean court has sentenced Samsung vice chairman Jay Y Lee to two-and- a-half years in jail. The 52-year-old Lee was convicted of bribing an associate of former president Park Geun-hye and jailed in 2017. But the sentence was reduced and suspended on appeal. Shares of firms linked to the electronics giant plunged after the verdict. Malaysia to introduce additional $3.7B stimulus package Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the government will inject 3-point-7 billion dollars in additional stimulus to support the pandemic-hit economy. The move comes a week after the Southeast Asian country declared a state of emergency to stem a new surge in coronavirus cases. The newly announced economic measures will include cash support to the poor, tax breaks and wage subsidies. Carmakers Fiat Chrysler, PSA Group complete $48B merger Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group have completed their 48-billion- dollar merger to create the world's fourth-largest carmaker. The automakers said the newly formed company, called Stellantis, is expected to cut annual costs by more than 6-billion- dollars. Shares in Stellantis jumped as much as 7-and- a-half percent on their first trading day in Milan and Paris.
Fiat Chrysler has merged with PSA Group and the new entity will be called Stellantis. Stellantis will become the fourth largest carmaker on Earth, behind Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai - but it will be a challenge for Stellantis to survive because it has no sales in China (world's largest car market) as well as massive over-production capacity and commitments with the French Government not to close factories or reduce head count. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. PSA SOLD 120,000 ELECTRIFIED MODELS IN 2020 " The PSA Group recorded around 120,000 new registrations for electrified models in 2020, one reason it met the European CO2 targets. At the same time, the French company’s total sales slumped 27.8% to 2.51 million cars in the crisis year compared to 2019." reports electrive: "The French car group is planning a merger with Fiat Chrysler under the name Stellantis. Stallantis probably wants to fall back on three electric car platforms, as emerged in September from a report by the portal clubalfa.it. In addition to the already known eCMP and eVMP platforms, they will add a base developed by FCA for larger electric cars. Currently, the PSA Group offers 17 electrified models, with six more to be added this year." https://www.electrive.com/2021/01/14/psa-sold-120000-evs-over-2020/ RENAULT 5 ELECTRIC SUPERMINI "No fewer than seven fully electric vehicles will be launched by 2025, and one of them was previewed today in the shape of the reborn Renault 5. Also known as “Le Car” in the United States, the supermini is back after being discontinued in 1996." says Motor1.com: "Renault labels the new 5 pictured here as a prototype rather than a concept, which means the production version likely won’t stray away from this retro-tastic design. That red stripe is likely a nod to the hot hatch version dubbed Renault 5 GT Turbo back in the day, which may hint its modern-day EV counterpart will spawn a performance derivative. We’re also hearing there are plans to bring back the Renault 4 as well, but details are limited at this point." Auoblog said: "Viewed from the side, the concept's silhouette echoes its predecessors with a short front overhang and a C-pillar slanted at about 45 degrees. Its relatively tall vertical rear lights are an unmistakable nod to the Super Cinq (the 5's were smaller), while the emblem placed on the passenger side of the hatch creates another visual link between the two cars, though we didn't expect to find it out back. It's inspired by the face-lifted Super Cinq, which went on sale in 1987 with a new-look grille that placed the Renault logo next to the driver-side headlight." https://www.motor1.com/news/466116/renault-5-electric-supermini-preview/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/14/renault-5-prototype-electric-car-lecar-super-cinq/ RENAULT DOUBLES EV SALES IN EUROPE "On the European electric market, the Renault brand doubled its sales and confirmed its leadership with 115,888 electric vehicles sold. ZOE is the best-selling electric car with 114% growth at 100,657 units." "In a fast-growing electric market, the Renault brand confirmed its leadership in the European electric market with 115,888 vehicles sold, an increase of 101.4% compared to 2019. ZOE is the best-selling electric car with 100,657 units, up 114%. In the electric utility segment, Kangoo Z.E. is the best-selling vehicle. The Renault Twingo Electric and Dacia Spring will enhance the Group's electric vehicle offering in 2021. In addition to its electric range (BEV), Renault has been offering an E-TECH hybrid and plug-in hybrid on its best-sellers (Clio, Captur & Megane estate) since the summer. The brand is thus establishing itself on the market for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles with more than 30,000 sales in Europe, representing 25% of order volumes for these vehicles. During the first half of 2021, the E-TECH range will be expanded with the arrival of the Renault Arkana E-TECH hybrid, Captur E-TECH hybrid and Megane sedan E-TECH plug-in hybrid." https://en.media.groupe.renault.com/news/worldwide-sales-results-2020-07de-989c5.html ALPINE AND LOTUS TO JOINTLY DEVELOP ELECTRIC SPORTSCAR The Alpine and Lotus teams will conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for the joint engineering, design and development of an EV sportscar by leveraging the resources, expertise and facilities of the respective entities in both France and the UK. Alpine and Lotus will also explore the development of a joint services offer combining their engineering expertise. A collaboration to leverage Alpine’s motorsport platform covering Formula One to Formula E and Endurance is also under study. RUN ON LESS SHOWS HOW FAR ELECTRIC TRUCKING HAS COME IN 2021 "RMI and NACFE are announcing the third in their bi-annual Run on Less trucking demonstration run series. This year’s Run on Less will focus on electric trucking, with 10 dedicated trucks and their drivers reporting real-time data to show the current state of electric trucking technology in the freight industry." says CleanTechnica: "Electric (RoL-E) demonstration vehicles will include electric vans, medium-duty box trucks, and heavy-duty trucks moving freight in a variety of conditions and geographic areas. In order to increase electric truck adoption and deployment, RoL-E will help fleets, charging infrastructure companies, utility companies, and policymakers better understand the current benefits and challenges of hauling freight with electric trucks." https://cleantechnica.com/2021/01/13/run-on-less-shows-how-far-electric-trucking-has-come-in-2021/ TESLA TO RECALL 158,000 CARS BECAUSE TOUCHSCREEN FAILURES "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked Tesla to recall 158,000 Model S and Model X cars because of “media-control unit” — the touchscreen and associated tech— failures." reports Jalopnik: "Tesla doesn’t do model years, but NHTSA still does, saying the cars involved are 2012-2018 Model S and 2016-2018 Model X. Over 12,000 Model Ss and Xs have had this failure happen (that we know of), as my colleague Jason Torchinsky reported in November. Also as Jason wrote then, this is a weirdly preventable issue, since Tesla knew that the flash memory would fail at some point, but miscalculated how long it would take in the life cycle of the car." https://jalopnik.com/the-feds-want-tesla-to-recall-158-000-cars-because-touc-1846054594 TESLA ADDS EUROPEAN DEALERSHIPS "Tesla expanded the number of stores and service centers it operates in Europe by a third last year in preparation for selling the new Model Y compact crossover." says Automotive News Europe: "Tesla opened 40 new outlets in Europe last year, for a total of 161 in the region, the company said. A majority offer both sales and service functions, it added. Tesla affirmed its promise to start production of the Model Y at its new factory in Berlin in July this year. Tesla was one of the few makers of electric cars to see European sales decline in the first 11 months of 2020, losing 18 percent to 69,495" https://europe.autonews.com/retail/tesla-adds-european-dealerships-reversing-online-only-sales-strategy QUESTION OF THE WEEK What your favourite charging network, and why? VW GROUP HIGHLIGHTS SUCCESS OF EV MODELS 231,600 all-electric vehicles handed over to customers, more than three times the 2019 figure; also 190,500 plug-in hybrids (+175 percent). In Western Europe, the share of electric vehicles therefore surged to 10.5 percent of overall deliveries (2019: 1.9 percent). The Volkswagen Group handed over 9,305,400 vehicles to customers worldwide in 2020, a decrease of 15.2 percent year-on-year due to Covid-19. This brought the share of BEV and hybrid vehicles in Europe up to 12.4 percent of the brand’s total deliveries – after 2.3 percent in 2019. The most popular model was the ID.3 with 56,500 units sold – even though this only came on the market in September. ID.3 was the most frequently delivered BEV in Finland, Slovenia and Norway in December. In Sweden, the ID.3 was actually the top-selling car in December 2020 in absolute numbers – regardless of the type of drive. In the Netherlands and Germany, Volkswagen Passenger Cars managed to leap to the number one spot in all-electric vehicles over the full-year 2020 – with a share of 23.8 percent in Germany in the BEV market and 23 percent in the Netherlands. Following closely on the heels of the ID.3, Volkswagen’s second all-electric model, the ID.4 is being successively launched. It is the brand’s first all-electric world car and as an SUV is also right in line with customer trends: the share of SUVs of Volkswagen’s total deliveries worldwide rose from 29.8 percent in 2019 to 34.8 percent in 2020. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2021/01/Volkswagen-brand-triples-deliveries-of-all-electric-vehicles-in-2020.html AUDI E-TRON SELLS ALMOST 50,000 IN 2020 79.5% growth in e-tron deliveries to 47,324 units last year. AUDI AG is continuing its transformation into a provider of sustainable premium mobility and is by some distance the biggest maker of electric vehicles among the three German premium brands. The successful Audi e-tron model (including the Audi e-tron Sportback) registered a significant increase in demand last year, with growth of 79.5 percent (47,324 cars) compared with the previous year. The Audi e-tron is the global top seller among electric vehicles made by German premium manufacturers. In Norway it is even the best-selling of all models. In Germany the Audi e-tron (including the Audi e-tron Sportback) was able to more than double its sales volume in the final quarter in comparison with the previous year. Although Audi Europe was down 19%, the e-tron and e-tron Sportback was up 80%. Next up the cheaper Q4 e-tron, and the Taycan rivalling e-tron GT Here's a thought. In 2020 Tesla make 55,000 of the Model S and Model X combined. TAYCAN DELIVERS 20,000 IN 2020 Taycan deliveries totaled 20,015 in 2020, despite a six-week pause in production just as the new model was ramping up, and despite many markets planning spring premieres. BMW GROUP SOLD 192,646 ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES IN 2020 The BMW Group sold a total of 192,646 electrified BMW and MINI vehicles worldwide last year – an increase of a third (+31.8%) over 2019. This means that electromobility is also a significant growth driver for the company in absolute terms. Sales of fully electric vehicles rose by 13 percent, while plug-in hybrid sales climbed by almost 40 percent. In Europe, electrified vehicles already accounted for 15 percent of total sales. The BMW Group has now increased the number of electrified vehicles (pure electric and plug-in hybrid) in its line-up to 13 models, which are available in 74 markets around the globe. By 2023, the BMW Group plans to almost double its line-up to 25 electrified vehicles, of which more than half will be fully electric. The introduction of the pure-electric MINI Cooper SE, with 17,580 vehicles sold in 2020, and BMW iX3 last year will be followed in 2021 by the start of production for the fully electric BMW iX in Dingolfing and the BMW i4 in Munich JAGUAR I-PACE SALES HIT NEW RECORD HIGH IN Q4 2020 "After several weaker quarters, Jaguar has finally announced really positive news that the Jaguar I-PACE significantly expanded in the fourth quarter of 2020 to an all-time quarterly record of 7,807 units globally." reports InsideEVs: "The year-over-year growth stands at 69%, and the I-PACE share out of the overall Jaguar volume surged to an unprecedented 27.8%! Despite the outstanding Q4, previous quarters weighed heavily on the I-PACE results in 2020 and the overall sales of 16,457 have turned out to be 5.2% lower than in 2019. PSA GROUP TO LAUNCH NEW ELECTRIC PLATFORM FOR LARGER VEHICLES "The PSA Group has revealed plans for a new electrified eVMP platform that will underpin its larger vehicles from 2020 onwards as it moves towards a fully electrified line-up." writes Autocar: "The French giant, whose brands include Citroën, DS, Peugeot and Opel/Vauxhall, currently uses two ‘multi-energy’ platforms: CMP and EMP2. The CMP architecture, for small vehicles, can utilise combustion engined and electric powertrains, while the EMP2 is designed for ICE-only and plug-in hybrid systems. It's designed for electric vehicles with a range of between 248 and 404 miles, depending on the body, thanks to "60-100kWh of embedded energy" within the wheelbase. PSA says that the platform can also support hybrid powertrains, which will be “offered on certain markets” where needs must. According to PSA, key to the efficiency of the eEVMP platform is the optimisation of development and industrialisation costs. It says the eVMP has been developed with “extended carry-over” from the EMP2 platform and can be made on existing plants and production lines to limit investment." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/psa-group-launch-new-electric-platform-larger-vehicles TOYOTA TO TAKE 10% STAKE IN ELECTRIC DRIVE MAKER BLUE NEXUS; NEW JOINT SALES STRUCTURE "BluE Nexus Corporation (earlier post) and Toyota Motor Corporation will collaborate to prepare for the accelerated adoption of electrified vehicles by working together to increase their competitiveness in products related to electrification as well as to fortify their sales structure, including their technical support and services, among others, rendered to their customers. Additionally, Toyota will take a 10% stake in BluE Nexus to achieve this goal." reports Green Car Congress: " As they look toward the accelerated adoption of electrified vehicles, BluE Nexus and Toyota aim to join forces and use their core competencies—i.e., Toyota’s control calibration technologies for engines, batteries, and other major peripheral components as well as BluE Nexus’s well-developed lineup of electric drive modules—to respond to requests from all types of customers around the world." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/07/20200731-bluenexus.html AMAZON BUILDING MAJOR EV CHARGING PARK IN GERMANY "The e-co mmerce giant Amazon has announced its largest deployment of electric mobility in Germany to date. The distribution center in Essen has been equipped with 340 charging stations and operates more than 150 electric delivery vehicles every day." says electrive: "Currently, eight of eleven delivery partners in Essen have converted their fleets to electric transporters, Amazon reports. A total of 150 electric vans are on the road in Essen. In addition, two other delivery partners in the Bochum distribution centre operate 40 electric vehicles. In January, Amazon announced that 60 charging points had been installed in the Munich-Daglfing distribution centre – a big news at the time, but compared to Essen, the Munich solution appears in a different light. While 40 StreetScooters and ten Mercedes eVito are used in Bavaria, Amazon does not mention in the current announcement which models will be used in Essen." https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/31/amazon-building-major-ev-charging-park-in-germany/ FRENCH START-UP EMERGES FROM STEALTH MODE WITH PLAN TO BUILD HUGE BATTERY GIGAFACTORY BY 2023 "A French start-up has been launched with plans to build a 16GWh lithium-ion battery gigafactory in France by 2023 to help Europe meet the growing demand for electric vehicles and energy storage." according to Rechargenews.com: "After a year of behind-the-scenes work, Verkor — backed by French digital solutions company Schneider Electric, EU innovation fund EIT InnoEnergy and French real estate giant Groupe IDEC — has emerged from stealth mode with plans to complete the low-carbon 16GWh facility at a yet-to-be-decided location in France in 2023, before expanding it to 50GWh at a later date. Another new European battery start-up, Automative Cell Company (ACC) — a joint venture between Total-owned battery maker Saft and vehicle giant PSA Group, which owns Peugeot, Citroen, Opel and Vauxhall — plans to build an 8GWh gigafactory in northern France by 2023, and then a second 8GWh gigafactory in southwest Germany." https://www.rechargenews.com/technology/french-start-up-emerges-from-stealth-mode-with-plan-to-build-huge-battery-gigafactory-by-2023 UK OFFSHORE WIND MAY SOON BE SUBSIDY-FREE "Researchers at Imperial College in London conducted an exhaustive review of all European offshore wind installations since 2006 and concluded that offshore wind may soon be so cheap that newer installations will generate electricity at below wholesale prices, meaning government subsidies will no longer be required. In fact, by mid-century, those wind farms may actually be paying dividends that lower the cost of electricity for everyone. Even better, the industry will create tens of thousands of new jobs." says CleanTechnica: "What will make the next generation of offshore wind so inexpensive? The massive size of the turbines, many of which will have a blade diameter of 220 meters (that’s 722 feet for our US readers. To put that in context, the wingspan of a 747 is a mere 224 feet.) Larger turbines can harness more wind energy and have access to more consistent wind speeds at higher altitudes, making their production of electricity more predictable and reliable. According to The Independent, the newest wind farm at Dogger Bank in the North Sea has the same installed capacity as the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant and is expected to produce about two-thirds of its annual electricity. It will also cost massively less money than the ill-considered Hinkley Point nuke." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/30/uk-offshore-wind-may-soon-be-subsidy-free/ You can listen to all 854 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. TESLA IS TAKING RESERVATIONS FOR ITS CYBERTRUCK IN CHINA "Tesla has opened up reservations for its all-electric Cybertruck to customers in China, a move that will test the market’s appetite for a massive, futuristic truck. The reservations page on Tesla’s China website was first posted in Reddit channel r/teslamotors by user u/aaronhry. Electrek also reported on the Reddit post." says TechCrunch: "Tesla is now testing potential interest among Chinese consumers. It’s impossible to predict how many of these reservations — in China and the U.S. — will convert to actual sales. It will be more than a year before there are any answers. Tesla hasn’t even finalized its decision of where it will build the vehicle." https://techcrunch.com/2020/07/03/tesla-is-taking-reservations-for-its-cybertruck-in-china/ TESLA MODEL 3 RECEIVED 'NEW CAR AWARDS 2020' FROM AUTOTRADER "Tesla Model 3 received New Car Awards 2020 from AutoTrader - UK's largest automotive marketplace. The competition was attended by more than 100 cars, which were very thoroughly tested. All cars were rated on 16 different criteria, including space, performance, reliability, durability, features, quality, looks, costs, and much more." says Tesmanian: "This year, Tesla Model 3 became the absolute winner, taking first place in power, acceleration, economy, safety, performance, driving comfort, and ease of parking, demonstrating impressive capabilities." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/new-car-of-the-year-2020-tesla-model-3 GERMANY HITS 8.4% EV MARKET SHARE IN JUNE, & HEADING HIGH "Germany, Europe’s largest auto market, saw plug-in electric passenger vehicle market share hit 8.4% in June 2020, significantly up from 3.4% in June 2019. The H1 2020 plug-in share stood at over 7.7%, and will grow further in the second half with recently announced government incentives and more EV models coming available." writes Dr Max Holland for Clean Technica: "Of the 18,598 June plug-in sales, roughly 55% were plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and the remaining 45% were full battery electrics (BEVs). We don’t yet have data on the June best selling plug-ins, but the cumulative results from the 5 months to the end of May are now in. The top three were all pure BEVs: the Volkswagen e-Golf (6010 units), Renault Zoe (5618), and Tesla Model 3 (3664). Two PHEVs rounded out the top five, the Mitsubishi Outlander (2917) and Volkswagen Passat GTE (2903)." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/03/germany-hits-8-4-ev-market-share-in-june-heading-higher/ MERCEDES-BENZ TO BUY 3% STAKE IN CHINESE BATTERY MANUFACTURER "Mercedes-Benz is set to buy a 3% equity stake in Chinese battery cell manufacturer Farasis Energy, with which it has also launched a strategic partnership, the automaker's owner Daimler said July 3." according to SP Global: "Under the strategic partnership agreement, the two companies will collaborate in the development and industrialization of "highly advanced" cell technologies, as well as aim for cost competitiveness. "The technological focus is on significant increases in range through advances in energy density and the reduction of charging times," Daimler said. The partnership gives Mercedes-Benz a secure source of supply of battery cells for its electrification strategy and Farasis security for its planned construction of production capacity." https://www.spglobal.com/platts/en/market-insights/latest-news/electric-power/070320-mercedes-benz-to-buy-3-stake-in-chinese-battery-manufacturer-farasis-energy ALLEGO UPGRADES CHARGING STATIONS "Allego has launched an upgrade program to improve the charging experience and reliability of its HPC charging stations in Europe. This is intended to address many of the criticisms." according to Electrive: "For one thing, the displays on first generation HPCs are being replaced because of the often criticized poor visibility in sunlight. On the other hand, unspecified hardware components are being replaced “to improve the stability and uptime of the charging stations”. A software update will also improve connectivity and interoperability with the growing number of different electric models, the company said in a press release. Allego’s upgrade program is starting in Germany and covers three countries with a total of 48 HPC sites" https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/03/allego-upgrades-charging-stations/ CITROEN BOSS: MAJOR ELECTRIC CAR DEMAND LIKELY POST-PANDEMIC "Citroën boss Vincent Cobée believes the impact of the coronavirus pandemic could lead to a sharp rise in demand for electric cars in the near future. Speaking at a launch event for the new C4, which includes a fully electric e-C4 variant, Cobée said that low-emission vehicles – including plug-in hybrids and EVs – currently make up around 6% of the sales mix of Citroën parent firm PSA Group, but he expects that figure to rise sharply." reports Autocar.co.uk: "Cobée noted that the higher purchase price of EVs is still a deterrent to potential buyers. He said: “Anyone who’s worked in the car industry in the last 10 years will know the huge challenges EVs present in terms of battery and development costs. But as citizens, we know that if an EV costs roughly the same as an internal combustion engine car, we would shift. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/citroen-boss-major-electric-car-demand-likely-post-pandemic TESLA IS MAKING PUSH TOWARD FLEET VEHICLES "eIQ Mobility, a data science startup that has been working with Tesla to convince fleets to go electric, has been presenting a new standard metric, the EV Design Mileage, to determine whether an EV’s range can satisfy the daily operational requirements of an existing ICE vehicle." says electrek: "When fleet managers figure out that the range is sufficient, they start running the numbers and figure out that gas and maintenance savings make going electric a no-brainer." Tesla have been talking about an upcoming webinar for fleet managers "“We are hosting our 4th webinar to cover everything you need to know about Tesla and running electric vehicles as part of your fleet. We will provide a brief history of Tesla including who we are and where we have come from but more importantly, we will cover what matters to fleets and company car drivers, the benefits to employers and employees as well as technology, charging and safety topics. We’re also inviting you to ask any questions you have on running electric vehicles as part of your fleet so we can make sure the session provides you with all the answers you need.”" https://electrek.co/2020/07/03/tesla-push-toward-fleet-vehicles/ JAGUAR LAND ROVER FUEL-CELL PROJECT "Jaguar Land Rover’s involvement in hydrogen fuel-cell development goes well beyond backroom tinkering. In a media Q&A following a company update Friday, Jaguar Land Rover’s executive director of product engineering, Nick Rogers, clarified the project reported earlier this week—and underscored that there’s real potential in it for something large in the company’s lineup, like the Range Rover. " according to Green Car Reports: "we truly believe that hydrogen has a real place and opportunity, particularly in the bigger vehicles,” said Rogers. Partly, it has to do with the massive packs big SUVs need to be fitted with in order to achieve the long driving range luxury electric vehicle buyers are now expecting." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128746_jaguar-land-rover-fuel-cell-batteries-in-big-suvs AUDI EQUIPS FC BAYERN TRAINING GROUNDS WITH CHARGING POINTS The training grounds of FC Bayern Munich are getting ready for the Audi e-tron. Mercedes gave the go-ahead for the construction of 38 charging points yesterday. The charging points are to go online in late summer – just in time for the start of the next Bundesliga season, from which point the professional soccer players of FC Bayern will be driving the Audi e-tron, the brand’s first fully electric SUV. At the start of next year, Audi also wants to equip the Allianz Arena in Munich with charging points – fans and visitors to the stadium will then also benefit from them. https://evobsession.com/ready-for-the-audi-e-tron-audi-equips-fc-bayern-training-grounds-with-charging-points/ [mention for Premium Partners] You can listen to all 828 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. GERMANY IMPOSES THE INSTALLATION OF CHARGING STATIONS AT PETROL STATIONS "several European countries are relying on purchase incentives, in particular the scrapping bonus. Some countries are adding an additional incentive for electric vehicles. This is the case in France and Germany. In France, the incentive is €7,000 (£6,237/$7,900) for the purchase of an electric car whose price is less than €45,000 (£40,100/$50,780)." Writes DriveTribe: "On the other side of the Rhine, the incentive is €6,000 (£5,350/$6,770) for an electric car costing up to €40,000 (£35,600/$45,100). And to convince the Germans to switch to electric cars, the government will impose electric charging stations at all service stations." https://drivetribe.com/p/germany-imposes-the-installation-fFG7_BKcQhetULfJJFy4_w?iid=XCdVjY_ATVyc1iMMJIkpmg TESLA MODEL 3 IS UK’S BEST SELLING CAR...AGAIN "May 2020 saw UK plugin electric vehicle market share hit 16%, with the cumulative 2020 share now standing at 7.2%, almost triple 2019’s result. The Tesla Model 3 again takes the prize for best selling auto (of any kind) overall, maintaining the result from April." Says Max Holland for Cleantechnica: "UK auto market volume was down 89% year on year, but auto dealers are now reopening for business, promising better results going forwards. The Tesla Model 3 was the outstanding performer, not only taking 35% of the BEV market, but taking the overall top spot of any vehicle model sold in the country in May." 852 sold. https://cleantechnica.com/2020/06/05/tesla-is-uks-best-selling-auto-again-in-may-ev-market-share-hits-16/ PSA CONSIDERS LAUNCHING ELECTRIC PEUGEOT 3008 "French media report that the new 3008 will be equipped with a plug-in hybrid version as well as a purely electric offshoot." Says electrive: "According to French media, this is to be the new DS 4, which will also be purely electric as the DS 4 E-Tense. It is still open which drive the E-Tense version will receive. French media speculate about a drive power of 100 kW and a 50 kWh battery – exactly the same data as the PSA Group’s small electric cars. However, with a reported basic price of at least 45,000 euros, customers are likely to expect a little more from a “high-end compact car”. There could be certainty at the end of 2020: According to reports, PSA will then officially present the DS 4." https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/05/psa-considers-electric-peugeot-3008/ PORSCHE TAYCAN DC CHARGING TEST: PEAK IS 270 KW "Fastned, the European fast-charging network, recently had an opportunity to record charging sessions of the Porsche Taycan, which comes in four versions (one with 79.2 kWh battery and three with 93.4 kWh battery). The company shared the results about the charging performance so we can better understand how it works." Says InsideEVs: "The peak DC charging power for Taycan (in the case of bigger battery pack versions) is currently about 270 kW at the 300 kW CCS Combo 2 chargers. If the charger is 175 kW then the peak is about 165 kW. The smaller battery pack version is good for 225 kW. It's above 250 kW between about 2% SOC and about 25% SOC, while 270 kW is around 15-22% maybe." https://insideevs.com/news/427335/porsche-taycan-dc-charging-test/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles AUDI E-TRON SPORTBACK RATED BY EPA AT 218 MILES OF RANGE "When Audi unveiled the 2020 E-Tron Sportback for the US market at the end of April, it said the swoopy electric SUV would do 218 miles between charges. As it turns out, Audi was right on the money as the EPA fuel economy number is out, perfectly matching the 218-mile estimation made by the automaker." According to Quattro Daily: "The new Audi E-Tron Sportback will arrive at dealers across the United States this summer exclusively in the 55 Quattro specification. In Europe, there’s also a lesser 50 Quattro model available" https://www.quattrodaily.com/audi-e-tron-sportback-epa-range/ ELECTRIC DELIVERY VANS ARE HAVING A MOMENT "Commercial vans are emerging as a key growth area for electrification — and General Motors is developing a vehicle for the sector, according to a Reuters report. GM's interest shows how a powerful legacy automaker wants in on what Morgan Stanley analysts called "America's hottest new vehicle" in a research note this week." Says Axios. Amazon, in late 2019, vowed to buy 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from the startup Rivian and hopes to have 10,000 operating as soon as 2022. Ford announced in March that it's developing an electric version of its Ford Transit cargo van. UPS is planning to buy at least 10,000 electric vans from the U.K. startup Arrival. "FCA's commercial vehicle arm Fiat Professional presents the production version of its all-electric Ducato van, the Fiat E-Ducato, a year after the first prototype was shown in mid-2019. It will be the first electric Ducato in the 39-year history of the model." Says InsideEVs: "WLTP range expected from 200 km (124 miles) to over 330 km (205 miles) with several battery options" https://insideevs.com/news/427325/fiat-all-electric-e-ducato/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles "General Motors is developing an electric van aimed at business users, joining a growing list of carmakers planning EVs for the same segment. GM's plan to develop an electric van has not previously been reported. The No. 1 U.S. automaker did not confirm the van, but has said it plans to introduce at least 20 new all-electric vehicles by 2023, in a variety of body styles including sedans, trucks and crossovers. Suppliers familiar with such plans at GM and Ford told Reuters the Detroit automakers, which count trucks and commercial vehicles among their most profitable businesses, "don't want to leave the door open for Tesla" as they did in consumer passenger cars." According to Autoblog https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/04/gm-building-electric-van/ NEW PEUGEOT e-TRAVELLER The new PEUGEOT e-Traveller is now available with a 100% electric engine. 2 levels of autonomy offering up to 330 km in WLTP certification cycle, 2 battery capacities (50 kWh or 75 kWh), 3 lengths (Compact, Standard and Long), a limited height of 1.90 m, up to 9 seats. https://int-media.peugeot.com/en/next-gen-travel-n-new-peugeot-e-traveller Electrive points out: "What is important with the e-Traveller compared to the e-Expert is, of course, the cab. The model is available in two basic versions ‘Shuttle’ and ‘Combispace’, both versions are available in two lengths. The Shuttle version is aimed at professional transport companies such as taxi operators, airport or hotel shuttles. There is also the ‘Business’ version with five to nine seats and the ‘Business VIP’ version with six or seven leather individual seats and comfort features such as three-zone air conditioning." And also: "The new Kangoo Z.E. Business+ starts at a retail price of £19,836 (ex-VAT, inc grant), and is advertised to pack another “£1,070 worth of additional equipment” for a price increase of £600 on top. It is available in both medium and long-wheelbase panel versions, and retains the 33kWh battery and 44kW motor from the standard Renault Kangoo Z.E., for the same 143-mile range, according to WLTP." https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/04/peugeot-announce-electric-traveller-van/ https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/04/renault-launches-new-version-of-the-kangoo-z-e-in-the-uk/ Peugeot e-Expert, Opel/Vauxhall eZafira, Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro-e, Citroen e-Jumpy. TESLA CUTS PRICES IN NORTH AMERICA AND CHINA "Tesla has cut prices in North America on all of its cars except the Model Y by up to 6%. The delivery times for custom ordered Model 3’s has been reduced from 5–7 weeks to 3–5 weeks for the Standard Range Plus trim and 4–5 weeks for the other Model 3’s. Similarly, the custom order times for the Model X and S have shifted from 3–7 weeks to 4–6 weeks." says CleanTEchnica: "While the price cuts are desirable from a buyer’s standpoint and help Tesla advance its mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy, they do show that Tesla’s demand for cars has been affected somewhat by the worldwide health crisis." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/27/breaking-tesla-cuts-model-3-x-s-prices-up-to-6-in-north-america-model-y-unchanged/ CNBC notes: "Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced earlier this month that the price of the company’s advanced driver assistance system, which Tesla markets as “FSD” or “full self-driving,” would increase this July by $1,000, with more increases in the future. During Tesla’s Q1 earnings call, executives also said Tesla would offer FSD as a subscription service. Musk said at that time, of the subscription option, “It will be probably toward the end of this year.” https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/27/tesla-price-cuts-show-realism-in-face-of-coronavirus-slowdown.html TechCrunch said: "The base price of Model 3 standard range plus is now $37,990, a $2,000 reduction. But the biggest cuts were made to Tesla’s more expensive, luxury vehicles, the Model S sedan and the Model X SUV. The Model S long range plus now starts at $74,990, a decrease of $5,000. The more expensive Model S performance as well as the two Model X configurations also saw prices slashed by $5,000. The traditional big three U.S. automakers, Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, have turned to 0% financing rates as well as deferred or longer-term payment options." https://techcrunch.com/2020/05/27/tesla-cuts-prices-across-ev-line-up-ends-free-supercharging-for-model-s-model-x/ "All the pricier trims are also cheaper than yesterday. For example, a Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive Model 3 with Long Range now costs $46,990, down from $48,990. And the Performance Model 3 costs $54,990, down from $56,990. Pricier Model S and Model X trims all got a $5,000 price reduction " repotrs Mashable: "It's worth noting that the cheapest Model 3 still costs $35,000, but that one's not listed on Tesla's website; you have to call Tesla or physically visit a Tesla store to get it. The price of Tesla's Model Y, for which the deliveries started in March, remained unchanged." https://mashable.com/article/tesla-price-cuts/ Tesla has also removed its mention of free Supercharging on new Model S and Model X orders. ALL-ELECTRIC VOLVO XC40 RECHARGE NOW AVAILABLE FOR UK CUSTOMERS TO ORDER The Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric – Volvo’s first all-electric car – is now available for UK customers to order. The first of five fully electric cars to be launched by the Swedish company over the next five years, the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric P8 is capable of travelling more than 249 miles on a single charge. The XC40 P8’s long range does not come at the expense of performance, with its twin electric motors producing 408hp to deliver a 0-62mph time of only 4.9 seconds. The lack of an internal combustion engine frees up space for an additional 30-litre storage compartment or ‘frunk’ under the front bonnet, while the placement of the batteries under the centre of the car means space is not compromised elsewhere. Initially offered in R-Design specification, the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is available from £53,155, with UK deliveries expected to start in early 2021. 78kWh battery. fast charging up to 150kW. 1,500kg towing (towbar is £1,125). Climate & Heated seats: 775 Driver assist: 1550 Power seats: 624 Parking cams: 575 Glass roof: 1000 Wireless phone charger: 175 Heat pump: 575 The heat pump acts primarily as a range extender that helps save battery power in the pure electric XC40 Recharge. When it’s cold outside, it transports thermal energy from either the ambient air or the battery and releases this energy to heat up the cabin. This transport of heat is provided by a compressor which consumes less energy compared to the car's standard electrical heater. And by also supporting the air conditioner to work more efficiently, the heat pump helps save electric energy at a temperature range from 0°C up to 25–30°C. The heat pump can also help warm or cool the battery to optimise performance and range during long trips or heavy loads. TOYOTA REVEALS PROACE ELECTRIC "Toyota officially introduces the all-electric PROACE Electric delivery van (hinted in 2019) in selected European markets. Reservations are already being accepted and the first units will be delivered in October 2020 (in the Netherlands, for example)." says INsdieEVs: "The Toyota PROACE Electric is basically a rebadged version of EV vans from PSA Group, based on the EMP2 multi-energy platform. The French group previously announced: Peugeot e-Expert Citroën ë-Jumpy (aka Citroën ë-Dispatch) Opel Vivaro-e / Vauxhall Vivaro-e The specification is basically the same, including two battery options: 50 kWh battery for WLTP range of 230 km 75 kWh battery for WLTP range of 330 km https://insideevs.com/news/425503/toyota-proace-electric-15-year-battery-warranty/ BMW X2 XDRIVE25E SAC PHEV TO BE LAUNCHED JULY 2020 "BMW will launch the new X2 xDrive25e SAC (“Sport Activity Coupé”) PHEV, announced in January (earlier post), in Europe in July 2020 with pricing from €47,250 (US$51,800)." reports Green Car Congress: "The new BMW X2 xDrive25e features the fourth and latest generation of BMW eDrive technology developed for the plug-in hybrid models. An electric motor generating an output of 70 kW/95 hp and a high-voltage battery with a gross energy content of 10.0 kWh enable an all-electric range of up to 57 kilometers in the legal EU test cycle (35 miles). Together, the 3-cylinder combustion engine, which delivers torque to the front wheels, and the electric motor powering the rear wheels produce a system output of 162 kW/220 hp and create a hybrid all-wheel drive configuration. The new BMW X2 xDrive25e sprints from a standing start to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds." HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP TO GET ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERIES FROM LG CHEM "Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Hyundai Motor and its sister company Kia Motors has picked LG Chem as one of the battery suppliers for its upcoming new electric vehicles, a group spokesman said on Wednesday." reports Reuters: "Details of the supply contract including the electric vehicle (EV) model and the full amount of the deal, which are yet to be decided, will be confidential, the spokesman said. LG Chem declined to comment. Hyundai Motor said last year it would launch 16 EV models by 2025 with an aim to boost EV sales to 560,000 by then." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hyundai-motor-lg-chem-electric-batter/hyundai-motor-group-to-get-electric-vehicle-batteries-from-lg-chem-idUSKBN2331FR AUDI E-TRON IS THE NEW KING OF NORWAY "Norway remains one of the most fascinating auto markets in the world. With a 70% plug-in vehicle market share in the first 4 months of 2020, there is nothing that comes close to it. That isn’t an overnight figure either — the country has been far ahead of any other market in terms of plug-in vehicle market share for several years."That said, the market leader is now a vehicle that would typically be outside the price range of a working class family in other countries, but Norway is a rich country (very rich country) with adventurous terrain, so it makes a bit of sense. The Audi e-tron isn’t just first — it’s far ahead in the #1 spot so far this year." says CleanTechnica: "A German model that was in the #1 spot for many, many months, the Volkswagen e-Golf, is solidly in second at 6% market share. After that, you’ve got the Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Kona EV, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Tesla Model 3, Renault Zoe, BMW i3, and then a long tail of remaining PEVs. You also have a handful of plug-less vehicles scattered into the overall sales rankings (see charts below)." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/25/audi-e-tron-is-the-new-king-of-norway/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK What are your desired specs for an electric pick-up truck? Show #718 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 6th March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. U.S.-BUILT ELECTRIC FORD TRANSIT WILL CHANGE THE VAN WORLD "The best selling commercial van in the world is going electric, and that could change the entire fleet market." reports Jalopnik: "Ford already takes a huge cut of that market, selling almost a quarter of a million Transits in 2019. While the full details of the new Transit EV—like range, power output, and cost—haven’t been unveiled yet, Ford says this will all come out soon. Perhaps it’ll be a New York Auto Show thing." Jim Farley, COO, Ford Motor Company: "Commercial vehicles are a critical component to our big bet on electrification, As leaders in this space, we are accelerating our plans to create solutions that help businesses run better, starting with our all-electric Transit and F-150. This Ford Transit isn’t just about creating an electric drivetrain, it’s about designing and developing a digital product that propels fleets forward.” Ars Technica points out: "just like the full-size pickups so beloved by US trades—it will come in a variety of sizes, with three different body lengths, three different roof heights, and different cabin and body options." Slashgear said: "There’ll be a cargo van version, a cutaway, a chassis cab, and three different roof heights, Ford suggests. That should help the electric Transit be more than a one-off novelty in the overall line-up. It’ll also mark a big step forward for connectivity, Ford promises. The all-electric Transit will use Ford Telematics and an embedded FordPass Connect 4G LTE modem. That will support in-vehicle hotspot use for up to 10 WiFi devices, but also allow for more precise fleet management. With the right software, companies will be able to track the van via GPS, add geofencing rules, and remotely monitor vehicle diagnostics." And Digital Trends points out: "The electric Ford Transit will go on sale in the United States for the 2022 model year, meaning it will likely arrive in showrooms before the end of 2021. Pricing information hasn’t been announced yet. For context, the gasoline-burning Transit carries a base price of $34,510. Production will take place in the United States" https://jalopnik.com/the-u-s-built-electric-ford-transit-will-change-the-va-1842100761 https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/03/ford-readies-an-all-electric-transit-van-for-us-sales-starting-2022/ https://www.slashgear.com/ford-transit-ev-will-bring-an-all-electric-van-to-us-and-canada-04612105/ https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/electric-ford-transit-delivery-van-announced-for-2022-debut NORWAY: 5,145 ALL-ELECTRIC CARS REGISTERED IN FEBRUARY "5,145 new zero-emission cars were registered in Norway in February just past. The market share of purely electric cars in new passenger car registrations was thus 49.7 per cent. In total, including HEV and PHEV, 79.2 per cent of all newly registered cars in Norway had either an electric or hybrid drive. The Audi e-tron was the most popular model across all drive types." reports electrive: "Compared to the same month last year, this marks an increase in all-electric registrations of 13.9 per cent. While Norway still recorded declines in the last three months of 2019, things have started looking up again in the new year. With regard to the individual models, the Audi e-tron quattro again recorded the highest number of new registrations across all drive types. A total of 1,171 of this model were registered for the road in February. The VW e-Golf (755 new registrations) only followed in second place by a clear margin. The Nissan Leaf made it to third place with 484 new registrations." https://www.electrive.com/2020/03/04/norway-5145-all-electric-cars-registered-in-february/ TESLA GETS GREEN LIGHT TO START PRODUCING NEW MODEL 3 LONG RANGE IN CHINA "Tesla has received the green light to start producing a new version of the Model 3 Long Range RWD in China." writes Fred for Electrek: "When announcing the production of the Model 3 in China, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the automaker would only produce the lower-end versions of the car in the country and the higher-end would still be produced in Fremont, California. As production started at the plant last year, Tesla was only producing the Model 3 Standard Range Plus RWD. However, we reported last month on Tesla seeking to make the Model 3 Long Range RWD, a version of the Model 3 that was discontinued in the US, at Gigafactory Shanghai in China. Now we’ve learned that Tesla received approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to produce and sell the new version of the Model 3 in China (via Reuters)." https://electrek.co/2020/03/06/tesla-greenlight-producing-model-3-long-range-china/ TESLA ADVERTISES FOR SOLAR, ENERGY STORAGE STAFF IN CHINA " Tesla has advertised for solar and energy storage project managers in China, as the U.S. electric vehicle maker moves to expand its energy business into the country." reports Autoblog: "The two posts on the Tesla human resources department's official WeChat account mark the first time the California-based automaker has looked to hire for such roles in China. One post says Tesla is seeking project managers to design and execute solar projects for commercial or residential customers, while a second seeks managers to develop photovoltaic energy storage projects. The roles are advertised as based at its $2 billion factory in Shanghai" https://www.autoblog.com/2020/03/06/tesla-china-solar-energy-storage-hiring/ ELECTRIC CARS ARE ONLY FOR ‘GREEN ADDICTS’ SAYS PEUGEOT BOSS "Electric cars are only bought by “green addicts” and aren’t attractive enough to regular buyers, according to the chairman of France’s largest carmaker." says driven.co.nz: "Carlos Tavares, head of the PSA Group responsible for Peugeot, Citroen and DS, says electric vehicles still lack mainstream appeal. Speaking to reporters from a number of outlets including Reuters following the cancelled Geneva motor show, Tavares said manufacturers must work on making electric cars affordable. Tavares’ views clash with the heads of major manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, which are investing heavily in electric technology. Ola Källenius, Daimler chair and boss of Mercedes-Benz cars, says his company will double production of plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2020 and push to expand its “EQ” family of electric cars. But Tavares isn’t alone. BMW board member Klaus Frölich told reporters in June 2019 that the shift to electrification is overhyped, and that a government push for electric cars outstripped consumer demand." https://www.driven.co.nz/news/news/electric-cars-are-only-for-green-addicts-says-peugeot-boss/ A HYBRID PORSCHE 911 SOUNDS LIKE A PACKAGING NIGHTMARE "Porsche is still developing a hybrid 911, it just sounds like a lot of hard work. Porsche wants to keep the same bodystyle of the current car, keep the rear seats, keep the engine location, etc., and all of that proves difficult when you have to fit batteries and motor in there somewhere." according to Jalopnik: "Auto Express interviewed Michael Steiner, who sits on the board for Porsche". The platform is hybrid ready, and we have prototypes. I drive it myself; it’s fun to drive,” Dr. Michael Steiner, Porsche’s board member for R&D told us. “One thing that should be decided on is whether it is more performance-oriented hybrid or range-orientated plug-in hybrid. This is one of the main decisions we have to take - deciding which direction such a variant of the 911 should take. It’s also once again to do with weight. The more range you would like, the more weight you have to add, but if you are only looking for performance you could have a really small battery that boosts the car and regenerates under braking,” Steiner added.” https://jalopnik.com/a-hybrid-porsche-911-sounds-like-a-packaging-nightmare-1842127164 SOLAREDGE LAUNCHES SMART EV CHARGER Following the launch of the first-of-its-kind, award-winning EV charging solar inverter, SolarEdge is now expanding its EV charging offering with the launch of its Smart EV Charger in North America. Increasing installation flexibility, the new level 2 EV charger (Maximum 9.6kW 40A@ 240Vac) supports installation either as a stand-alone unit or coupled with a SolarEdge PV system. When connected to a SolarEdge inverter with HD-Wave technology, the Smart EV Charger enables EV charging with excess solar energy in order to reduce charging costs and carbon footprints. The combined solution will offer charging solely from solar and in the future also support up to X7 faster charging by simultaneously (assuming 40A@240VAC vs 12A@120VAC) using grid and solar energy through its solar boost mode." THE NETHERLANDS GOES FOR EV PURCHASE SUBSIDIES "The Dutch government has now confirmed the rumours of a planned purchase subsidies for privately used e-cars from July and has provided further details. Hybrid cars and vehicles above a list price of 45,000 euros will not be considered. However, electric used cars will be considered." according to Electrive: "Those wanting to purchase an electric vehicle in the Netherlands will now be beckoned by a subsidy of 4,000 euros for the purchase of new electric cars with a list price of between 12,00 0 and 45,000 euros and a minimum range of 120 kilometres. The new subsidy rates include a bonus of 2,000 euros for used electric cars." https://www.electrive.com/2020/03/05/the-netherlands-goes-for-ev-purchase-subsidies/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… I’m waving a magic wand and installing a charge point of any speed or type free of charge for you – what is it, where and why. Show #675 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 23rd January 2020. FORMER FORD CEO: EVS ARE THE FUTURE The former Ford CEO Mark Fields was on CNVC this week and says that EVs are the future. Given that isn't up for debate, the big questions which remains are when automakers get payback and how fast will EV adoption happen? I've got three clips to play you and this is fascinating, someone who lived and breathed the issues which we talk about, but he has more first hand experience than most others. On Elon Musk creating demand and how Tesla can be profitable ... On automakers trying to do what Tesla has done because of their legacy costs... On EV's being a computer on wheels plus autonomy... So what didn't he talk about? Well he could have named the issues which used to face Ford and what it faces now. He didn't name other automakers. He didn't specially say Tesla's were better although he raved about their software. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=0pD3RCcdQ2c&feature=emb_title TESLA MODEL Y DELIVERY RUMORS "There’s been some chatter on the interwebs that some Model Y reservation owners have received calls confirming their Model Y orders and telling them where their deliveries will occur." reports Zach at CleanTechnica: "One person claims that the Tesla staff member who talked to him or her indicated that a Model Y Performance could be delivered next month, in February, whereas a Model Y Long Range AWD could be delivered in March or April. This reservation holder reportedly resides in Ontario." But...use REddit as a source at your peril. This user has been active since 2016. Also, that would make it a Founders Edition. Also, first deliveried in Canada? Really? https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/23/tesla-model-y-delivery-rumors/ TESLA TOPS $100 BILLION "Tesla shares surged to a fresh all-time high Wednesday, lifting Elon Musk's clean-energy carmarker past the $100 billion mark and extending a run that has taken his company past the likes of Ford, General Motors and Volkswagen in less than a decade." says TheStreet.com: "Tesla shares were marked 8.12% higher Wednesday to change hands at $591.78 each, an all-time high that would lift the stock to a market value of just over $106.6 billion and extend its rise since the June 3 nadir to around 230%. Tesla's market value, in fact, overtakes that of Volkswagen AG at the start of trading later today, with Europe's largest carmarker languishing around the $100.7 billion mark. Japan's Toyota Motor Co., (TM) - Get Report however, remains the world leader with a market value of around $198 billion." https://www.thestreet.com/investing/tesla-tops-100-billion-lifts-market-value-past-volkswagen 700 JAGUAR I-PACE EVS TO JOIN NHS FLEET "Jaguar Land Rover and the National Health Service have teamed up with an unprecedented deal that will see a fleet of 700 Jaguar I-Pace electric cars be made available for public sector staff all over Britain The agreement, which came via Northumbria Healthcare’s NHS Fleet Solutions, will allow staff from over 200 organisations to lease the I-Paces over a three-year period. The move helps the NHS keep to its plan of reducing its carbon footprint." says Motor1.com: "The fleet of I-Paces will be available to any public sector staff member who works for organisations that are signed up to NHS Fleet Solutions from April 2020. Payment for the cars will come directly out of employee salaries." https://uk.motor1.com/news/394109/nhs-i-pace-leases/ BMW I VENTURES INVESTS IN SOFTWARE MOTOR COMPANY "BMW i Ventures has invested in Software Motor Company (SMC), a Silicon Valley-based company developing reliable, efficient and intelligent motor systems." reports Green Car Congress: "Electric vehicles will require lower costs and longer ranges to reach ubiquity. SMC’s technology enables lower cost motors, and lowers the cost of the battery for comparable range, thanks to higher efficiency over a wide operating range." Greg Smithies of BMW i Ventures: "Electric motors are a massive, $100B market, and they move our modern world, while consuming over 45% of the world's electricity. So investing in a company that can deliver huge electrical cost savings, while selling motor systems that are lower cost, more reliable, and made from more sustainable materials seems like a no-brainer." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/01/20200123-smc.html OPEL GRANDLAND X HYBRID4 "Autogefühl recently had an opportunity to test drive the crossover SUV Opel Grandland X Hybrid4 (Vauxhall Grandland X Hybrid4 in the UK), which will have also two siblings: Peugeot 3008 GT Hybrid4 and Citroën C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid." says InsideEVs: "This all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid (the front-wheel driving version coming too) is one of the first attempts from Opel at plug-ins under the PSA Group. 50 km (31 miles) of WLTP all-electric range (60 km NEDC) 13.2 kWh battery all-wheel drive 220 kW/300 hp of system output: 147 kW/200 hp 1.6L PureTech combined with the new e-EAT8 8-speed automatic transmission (Electric Efficient Automatic Transmission) and 80 kW/110 hp electric motor in the front plus another 80 kW/110 hp electric motor for rear axle charging using 3.3 kW on-board charger in around 4h or around 2h using 6.6 kW optional charger" https://insideevs.com/reviews/394351/opel-grandland-x-hybrid4-featured-autogefuhl/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA INVESTS $1.3 MILLION IN ENERGY STORAGE PROGRAM "Electrify America will invest $1.3 million in the Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s (SMUD) Energy StorageShares program, which incentivizes energy storage in grid-stressed locations throughout the city." reports ChargedEVs.com: "Through the program, Electrify America will receive recurring credits for the demand reduction needs at its 12 charging stations powered by SMUD in the Sacramento area." SMUD CEO Arlen Orchard: "This program will help address peak energy demands, minimize impacts to the grid, and support the expansion of charging in our community." https://chargedevs.com/newswire/electrify-america-invests-1-3-million-in-energy-storage-program/ OLD PHEV BATTERIES GET SECOND LIFE AT EV BUS CHARGING STATION In the Bergedorf quarter of Hamburg, a container with a total capacity of 500 kWh has been connected to the depot charging network at the Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein (VHH) depot. There, MAN Truck & Bus and VHH want to work together to test how used batteries behave after initial use in vehicles and as a stationary energy storage system, under real-world operating conditions. A white container containing 50 batteries – which were previously installed in VW Passat GTE vehicles – is located here. Each battery has a nominal capacity of 9.9 kWh, meaning that the container has a total capacity of exactly 495 kWh – about half a megawatt. The batteries are mounted on racks and then interconnected via battery management to form a large battery. One objective of the project is to develop a flexible battery storage concept which allows for the replacement of batteries. ELECTRIC CAR OWNERSHIP IS THE CURE FOR RANGE ANXIETY "Owning an electric car actually eases those anxieties. AAA released its latest EV study on Wednesday and it found car buyers shouldn't dismiss battery-powered cars until they actually live with one." reports CNET: "After surveying 40,000 electric vehicle owners, plus another 1,000-plus plug-in hybrid owners, AAA concluded that owning an EV is the best prescription for the unknown factors surrounding them. In total, 71% of those surveyed were first-time EV buyers, and 96% of them said they would shop for another EV. 43% of them said they drive more now that they own an EV. On average, 75% of owners just charge their cars at home. The average EV driver goes 39 miles per day. AAA asked if after owning an EV they felt better about these fears. The majority, 77%, said yes and were less or no longer concerned about range." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/electric-car-ownership-range-charging-study/ 87 POUNDS OF AMMUNITION, BOMBS FOUND AT TESLA'S 'GIGAFACTORY 4' SITE NEAR BERLIN "fficials in the German state of Brandenburg have discovered 187 pounds of World War II-era ammunition at the site of Tesla’s planned factory near Berlin. The Maerkische Oderzeitung German newspaper said as many as 25 unexploded bombs could be located within the area." according to IBTimes: "On Tuesday, thousands of German workers were forced to evacuate after a bomb weighing over 1,100 pounds was found in the western German city of Cologne. On the same day, authorities defused another bomb in central Berlin." https://www.ibtimes.com/world-war-ii-aftermath-187-pounds-ammunition-bombs-found-teslas-gigafactory-4-site-2907631 NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… With increasing attacks on EVs and vandalism caught on camera, why do some people have a problem with EVs? VW CEO SAYS CARMAKER FACES SAME FATE AS NOKIA WITHOUT URGENT REFORMS "Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) needs to accelerate the overhaul of its business to avoid becoming another Nokia (NOKIA.HE), which lost its dominance in the handset market to Apple (AAPL.O), the German carmaker’s chief executive said." and reported by Reuters today: "VW will cut resources devoted to fuel cells, since they will not be as competitive as battery electric drivertrains for at least another decade. VW will also slash costs at its MOIA mobility services unit." Diess said: "The big questions is: Are we fast enough? If we continue at our current speed, it is going to be very tough. The era of the classic carmakers is over. In summary this is probably the most difficult challenge Volkswagen has ever faced." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-strategy-diess/vw-ceo-says-carmaker-faces-same-fate-as-nokia-without-urgent-reforms-idUSKBN1ZF1OB FOXCONN AND FIAT CHRYSLER WILL MAKE ELECTRIC CARS FOR CHINA "iPhone manufacturer Foxconn is getting into the electric vehicle game, thanks to a planned joint venture with Italian-American automaker Fiat Chrysler (FCA). Foxconn announced on Thursday that the two companies will combine forces to make vehicles for the Chinese market, with FCA handling the manufacturing and the Taiwanese tech giant managing the electronics and software." wrties The Verge: "FCA, which oversees its eponymous brands as well as ones like Jeep and Dodge, has lagged behind its competitors in embracing electric vehicle technology. The company recently kicked off a merger with French automaker PSA Group, which makes cars under the Peugeot and Citroën brands (among others), partly in order to better attack the changing automotive landscape" https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/16/21069288/foxconn-fiat-chrysler-electric-vehicles-china-joint-venture PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES IN GERMANY DOUBLED IN DECEMBER 2019 From the InsideEVs Sales SCorecard: "Passenger plug-in electric car sales in Germany doubled in December, reaching the second-highest monthly level ever of 11,328 new registrations (up 98% year-over-year). The market share also improved to a near-record level, standing at 4.0%. That's one in every 25 new passenger cars. 2019 ended with 108,629 new passenger plug-in car registrations in Germany, which makes the country the biggest European market for EVs right now. The year-over-year growth amounted to 61%, while the average market share stands at 3%." https://insideevs.com/news/393067/plugin-car-sales-germany-december-2019/ VOLVO WILL BUILD NEW U.S. BATTERY PLANT TO HELP LAUNCH ELECTRIC XC90 Volvo will build its own U.S. battery assembly plant as it readies a line of electric vehicles for this market. The expansion is part of a previously announced $600 million project that the Swedish automaker has begun at its plant in Ridgeville, S.C., which includes a second production line and Volvo Car University." says Autonews.com: "Volvo will create an electric version of its next XC90 crossover and build it at the plant starting in late 2022. The factory, 45 miles northwest of Charleston, employs about 1,500 workers building the S60 sedan. The South Carolina plant will become the global production center for the third-generation XC90 flagship crossover" https://www.autonews.com/automakers-suppliers/volvo-building-us-battery-assembly-plant LEAF GETS CHEAPER "The Nissan LEAF is no longer the front-runner of electric cars and Nissan knows it. However, instead of introducing major changes to the LEAF, Nissan is pushing for a cheaper price to remain relevant." according to Pedro at PushEVs: "Now Nissan introduced a cheaper entry-level trim with a slower 3,6 kW on-board charger and without dual USB ports for the rear seats. Nonetheless, the price difference between the two cheapest trim levels can vary a lot from country to country. The new entry-level trim only seems tempting in Spain where it starts at 25.900 euros, which is 4.000 euros cheaper than the second cheapest trim level available. In other countries the difference between the two cheapest trim levels is a lot smaller and might not be worth it." https://pushevs.com/2020/01/16/nissan-leaf-gets-cheaper/ THE CHEVROLET BOLT IS HEADED TO CHINA AS A BUICK SUV "When spy photos of what appeared to be Chevrolet Bolt EV with some minor front- and rear-end updates circulated last week, Autoblog surmised that GM was working on some sort of Bolt-based vehicle — potentially a crossover — to be sold in China as a Buick." says Byron at Autoblog: "On Thursday, Motor1.com spotted a story published earlier this week on the Chinese site Auto Home which claims that GM has applied to sell an all-electric SUV under the Velite 7 nameplate in China. There's little differentiating the Velite 7's exterior from the Bolt EV's, apart from bumpers, badges, and a little extra ground clearance. Up front, the bowtie is replaced by a round Buick badge, and the bumper picks up an almost Prius-like appearance thanks to contrasting vertical elements and a thin grille bleeding into the head lights to give it a full-width appearance." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/01/16/buick-velite-ev-china/ TESLA RESPONDS TO GIGAFACTORY 4 PROTESTS BY SWIFTLY OPENING COMMUNITY OFFICE "Tesla has responded to local protests at the site of their next factory near Berlin by opening a community office to hear local concerns, according to Der Spiegel. The office opens Thursday, just a few days after site protests began." reports Electrek: "About 50 protesters gathered at the gigafactory site earlier this week to protest the plan. Their main concern was about the lack of public participation in the project. Tesla will now open a community office to hear those public concerns, as confirmed by Jörg Steinbach, Brandenburg’s minister of economics. Steinbach hopes that the opening of the community office will help to relax the situation between the protesters and Tesla." https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/16/tesla-responds-gigafactory-4-protests-swiftly-community-office/# HONDA & MOIXA LAUNCH THEIR FIRST V2G PROJECT IN LONDON "Honda and Moixa have teamed up to launch the first fruit of their pan-European cooperation. Smart chargers with vehicle-to-grid technology have been installed in London’s borough Islington and foretell a future of bi-directional charging via CCS." says electrive: "For now, the project sees three smart charging stations located at the private parking space of Islington council with two more to come. Honda, together with its Swiss partner EVTec sign responsible for the station design. It is decidedly more compact than other V2G-capable charging stations and offers both ChaDeMo and CCS charging. Greetings, comrades! I’m back from my week-long visit to Minsk, Belarus, halfway around the globe and a world away, as a guest of the good people at Press Club Belarus and the U.S. Embassy Minsk. It’s good to be back and rolling with the podcast. We’re planning to release an entire episode devoted exclusively to my visit to the former Soviet republic and what I learned about one of Detroit’s seven sister cities, sometime in the coming weeks. But on today’s show, we discuss my visit to Minsk and what it was like there. We also spend some time diving into a few big stories that broke here while I was in the same time zone as Moscow, eight hours ahead: The renewed push for a new Regional Transit Authority plan that would cover the city of Detroit and Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties, but not Macomb. It’s an approach we’ve long advocated. Tesla’s polarizing new Cybertruck, unveiled last week in Los Angeles. Will this electrified geometry-on-wheels find anything beyond a niche market of tech enthusiasts? And we discuss General Motors’ bombshell racketeering lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler, alleging that its rival was complicit in rampant UAW corruption that hurt GM financially by saddling it with higher labor costs. The suit comes while FCA is simultaneously negotiating with the union for a new four-year labor contract and trying to finalize a massive merge with PSA Group of France. Thanks for listening to Daily Detroit. If you like what you’re hearing, tell a friend about us, leave us a review and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, or support us by becoming a Patreon member.

ELON MUSK DONATES $1 MILLION TO #TEAMTREES "With a single Tweet on Tuesday night, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took one YouTuber’s global crowdfunding project straight into “ludicrous mode.”. Last week, YouTuber Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson officially announced the ‘#TeamTrees’ initiative, aiming to raise $20 million by the end of 2020 to help the Arbor Day Foundation plant 20 million trees around the world." reports Forbes: "The donation already appeared on the #TeamTrees leaderboard as of late Tuesday evening, with Musk leaving just a two-word note on the website: “For Treebeard.” Musk also proceeded to change his Twitter name to “Treelon.” His profile picture at publication time is an image of trees in a forest." teamtrees.org 8,346,590 https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrisstrub/2019/10/29/teamtrees/#1955aa2a5f6e TESLA NOTES MARKET DROP IN THE USA "Just a few days after Tesla presented surprisingly good quarterly figures, the electric car company is now showing details on regional business development in a press release to the SEC." writes electrive: "Tesla’s sales figures in the US market show a slump by almost 40 per cent during the third quarter, from $5.13 billion to $3.13 billion. According to Reuters, this is the first decline in more than two years. Over the same period, sales in China rose by 64 per cent to $669 million and in the rest of the world by more than $1 billion to $1.83 billion." https://www.electrive.com/2019/10/30/tesla-notes-market-drop-in-the-usa/ HONDA'S NAMING STRUCTURE FOR HYBRIDS AND ELECTRIC VEHICLES " Honda -- a company not necessarily known for its hybrid and electrified options despite being one of the first companies to sell a hybrid-electric vehicle to consumers -- has decided to rebrand its forthcoming hybrid models as (and I hate typing this) "e:HEV" says CNET: "The one bright spot in all of these abbreviations is that they may not make it all the way to the US. Honda says that it's not yet finalized its plans for the US market, which means we may be spared the onslaught of clashing letters and colons" https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/honda-hybrid-electric-naming-structure-change/ PORSCHE TRIES SELLING ITS CARS ONLINE IN THE US "Porsche isn't just trying to fight Tesla by offering electric cars... it's hoping to replicate some of the business model, too. The automaker is piloting online car sales in the US, giving would-be owners a chance to buy from 25 of the country's 191 independently owned dealers." reports Engadget: "The EV builder lets you custom-order cars, and will deliver to your home if you're too far from one of its service centers. With the Model X, Tesla has spent a lot of time designing the seats. Now Tesla is updating the front seats of the Model X." says Electrek: "Sources familiar with the matter told Electrek that Tesla communicated to employees that new Model X vehicles being built right now have new front seats. The new seats are less bulky, resulting in more legroom for the second-row seats regardless of the configuration (five, six, or seven)." https://electrek.co/2019/10/29/tesla-updates-model-x-front-seats/ SERVICE PLAN FOR PEUGEOT E-208 IS A THIRD CHEAPER THAN GAS 208 "Helen Lees, Head of Electric Vehicles & Connected Services at PSA Group, shared an interesting view that electric cars bring new threats to the car industry. This time it's however not about the intensity of capital investments to make the switch (develop new models and retool the plants), but about the loss of aftersales revenue. That's because electric cars are simpler and need less service than the conventional internal combustion engine equivalent." says InsideEVs: "For example, the upcoming Peugeot e-208 service plan envisions a third lower expense than in the case of the Peugeot 208 service plan." https://insideevs.com/news/379385/service-plan-peugeot-e-208-third-cheaper/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Set by listener Martin Young: “What were some of your biggest surprises about living with a BEV?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 256 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. CARLOS GHOSN QUITS AS RENAULT BOSS "Renault on Thursday announced that Ghosn resigned from his top spot as chairman and CEO of that automaker too, throwing into doubt the now-shaky alliance Ghosn helped forge between all three automakers" says Green Car Reports: "Under Ghosn, Nissan built and sold the first mass-market, fully electric vehicle sold around the world. In eight years on sale, Nissan has reportedly sold more than 386,000 Leafs according to the automaker, which makes it the world's best-selling electric car. Ghosn told CNBC in 2017 that the automakers he collectively ran profited on electric vehicles, which has been elusive for many automakers so far. In 2009, Ghosn spearheaded Nissan's efforts to produce the Leaf and sell it across the world. He committed billions of dollars to the Leaf's development, battery production, and marketing, and committed billions more to building and selling electric cars in China, the biggest opportunity market for automakers in the world." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121126_carlos-ghosn-electric-car-proponent-and-embattled-executive-quit-as-renault-boss FIRST TESLA MODEL 3 DEMO CARS ARRIVED IN EUROPE "In Norway during during the course of this month 17 Tesla Model 3 cars were already registered. I’m curious to see how many units of long and mid-range will Tesla sell before making the standard range variant available. But deep cuts apparently hit Tesla’s delivery, sales and Model S and X production teams." Tesla replied: "“We recently announced that we are no longer taking orders for the 75 kWh version of Model S and X in order to streamline production and provide even more differentiation with Model 3. As a result of this change and because of improving efficiencies in our production lines, we have reduced Model S and X production hours accordingly. On this Saturday’s episode of MotortradeRadio.com, Philip Nothard of @COX AutomotiveUK is joined by Curtis Hutchinson chat about this week’s news as we discuss the story of the week from @AMChatter as @VolvoCars has teamed up with online retail specialist @AmazonUK in a bid to drive convenient access to its vehicles with a ‘Prime Now test drives’ initiative. Whilst @Motors.co.ukpartners with Top Gear to give its car dealer partners' stock “even greater exposure” online @Motortrademag reports #dealers can boost their sales conversion rates by offering test drives geared towards customer usage, according to Coachworks Consulting @AMChatter reports Auto Trader will bypass traditional auction houses in a shake-up of fleet remarketing that will enable leasing companies and larger fleet operators to sell ex-company cars direct to dealers before the vehicle is de-fleeted. @AMChatter reports on two industry appointments, as Citroen boss Bek Hassan is leaving the UK for a new senior position in Paris with parent PSA Group. His replacement will be Karl Howkins, who is currently managing director of Opel Switzerland. And, Rawdon Glover appointed new managing director of Jaguar Land Rover UK. And finally…… a @Motortrderadio exclusive interview with Jim Reid, as The IMDA are proud to announce its first ever 'Best Practice' Masterclass. Click here for tickets
Wednesday 23rd May 2018. First a word for any EV groups meeting up soon. Like the group organised by Mark Goudie (Pron: Gordy) who organises regular EV meet ups with other EV owners here in the UK, so hello to the Northwest England Owners group on Facebook, and all the information you share and conversation you have. Any other groups listening? Let me know I’ll give you a shout. Mark also opened up the Tezla / Tessla debate – I think I just say what comes naturally BUT apologies to those who insist of Tessla, if I ever say Tezla I’m sorry. From now on I promise to try harder at Tessla. STUDY PREDICTS INCREASE IN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES Starting with a study by Statista, reported by RideApart.com and then ono InsideEVs, which is like a russian nested doll of credit I'm giving there, they are forecasting global e-bike sales will reach approximately 40 million units sometime in 2023. That's a huge number, and it starts to make more sense when you realise 35million of the 40million will be in China. But even so, 5 million electric bikes is a big number for North America and Europe. They say: "Unsurprisingly, one of the strongest forces in the entire e-market equation is urban (and suburban) areas. An increasing amount of electric two-wheeler sales are coming from scoot-sharing services like BMW’s DriveNow program, or the San Francisco-based Scoot Network e-scooter sharing offering. Both of these services, in addition to buying large fleets of bikes, also serve as a sort of motorized, two-wheeled test-drive, introducing the non-riding public to life on two-wheels. The number of EV startups risen sharply for the last couple years as well, and signs point to that trend only intensifying." https://insideevs.com/study-predicts-huge-increase-in-electric-motorcycle-sales-by-2023/?utm_source=bambu&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=industry RIVIAN TO DEBUT 800-HP ELECTRIC TRUCK AT LA AUTOSHOW Detriot-based electric car startup Rivian Automotive is getting ready to take the stage later this year at the Los Angeles Autoshow and debut the company’s first electric truck. “according to Christian Prenzler for Teslarati. "Rivian is also creating an 800-HP version of the vehicle capable of more than 450 miles of range, making it an SUV having the longest all-electric range on the market" These will serve the popular American consumer truck segment which we don't have in the UK or Europe to such a large extent. It's easy to quote numbers on something not yet made, but they say 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. “It’s stiffer than a supercar,” said CEO RJ Scaringe in speaking with Engadget. “There are only a few cars in the world that are going to be as fast as ours, and we have a large five-passenger truck.” The price they say is in the $50K to $90K region which seems way too cheap for all that performance. Rivian have their factory, the old Mitsubishi plant in Illinois, which they bought in January 2017. https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-800-hp-electric-truck-la-autoshow/ ADVANCED E-BUSES HIT ROADS QUICKER THAN EVS The latest long-term forecast from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) shows sales of electric vehicles (EVs), increasing from a record 1.1 million worldwide last year to 11 million in 2025, and then surging 30million by 2030 which cost-parity with combustion is achieved. China will lead this transition, with sales there accounting for almost 50% of the global EV market in 2025 and 39% in 2030. The advance of e-buses will be even more rapid than for electric cars, according to BNEF’s analysis. It shows electric buses in almost all charging configurations having a lower total cost of ownership than conventional municipal buses by 2019. There are already over 300,000 e-buses on the road in China. https://www.windpowerengineering.com/business-news-projects/advanced-e-buses-to-hit-the-roads-quicker-than-electric-vehicles/ CHINA CUTS CAR TARIFFS "China will cut tariffs on most imported cars to 15 percent from July 1, the finance ministry said on Tuesday following a thaw in trade tensions with the United States" says the UK's Daily Mail. Whilst Bloomberg say: "For Tesla, a tariff cut will provide a boon until they set up local production. Tesla has been working with Shanghai’s government since last year to explore assembling cars in China. China saying that it will allow foreign new-energy vehicle makers to fully own auto factories as early as this year removed a primary hurdle for Elon Musk." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-22/china-is-said-to-cut-car-import-duty-in-boost-for-lexus-bmw http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-5756777/China-says-cut-auto-import-tariffs-July-1.html MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE COULD END UP BEING EVEN QUICKER Staying with Tesla and it seems Ryan McCaffrey from Ride The Lightning Tesla Podcast has a direct line to Elon - which some superfans of both would probably compare to that old saying about The Pope having a direct line to God. I'm joking. Mostly. However Ryan said on Twitter: It’s probably not *this* simple with manufacturing, but wouldn’t the robot just reach into the red caliper pile on the assembly line for the cars tagged as Performance? In other words, it’s just a different part (in practice if not technically so), not a different process." So he's talking there about the red brake parts seen on other performance models. To which Elon replied: "not promising anything, but we *might* be able to increase Model 3 Performance power output a little" However I think many buyers will be happy to stump up $54,000 for a very quick dual motor Model 3, rather than $78,000 (without Autopilot) for a stupidly quick Model 3. There will be those who always want the fastest, but basic dual motor would do me more than fine. https://electrek.co/2018/05/22/tesla-model-3-performance-version-higher-power-output-teases-elon-musk/ DS3 DESTINED FOR PARIS MOTOR SHOW Maybe DS are feeling like they're being left out of the EV party because Rachel Burgess in Autocar point out: "DS will reveal the electric DS3 Crossback compact SUV, a rival to the Audi Q2, at the Paris motor show this October ahead of its launch in 2019. The EV variant of the new car, which will run alongside more traditional powertrains, will be available from launch and will offer a range of more than 124 miles on each charge. The urban-focused car is likely to have a 50kWh battery pack. DS product boss Eric Apode told Autocar that "DS has to lead [the electric] innovation" within the PSA Group. "This is also because of pricing. It [electric technology] has to start with premium brands because the prices will be high," he said. "Then, as the pricing decreases, it can go to the other brands." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/electric-ds-3-crossback-be-revealed-2018-paris-motor-show MODEL 3 BRAKE ISSUES WILL BE SORTED SOON Finally on Tesla, Elon Musk has now admitted there was a braking issue with the Model 3. The braking issue was first pointed out by Consumer Reports. He said it can be fixed with a firmware update that the electric car maker will be rolling out in a few days. He said in a reply to Electrek: "Looks like this can be fixed with a firmware update. Will be rolling that out in a few days. With further refinement, we can improve braking distance beyond initial specs. Tesla won’t stop until Model 3 has better braking than any remotely comparable car." https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/teslas-musk-admits-model-3-braking-issue-promises-fix.html BP INVESTS $20 MILLION IN FLASH BATTERIES CNBC report on more oil money flowing into electrons: "BP said its venture capital arm was investing in Tel Aviv-based StoreDot as it looks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its operations. StoreDot develops so-called "flash batteries," lithium-ion batteries that it says can charge electric vehicles in a matter of minutes." "Ultra-fast charging is at the heart of BP's electrification strategy," Tufan Erginbilgic, chief executive of BP's downstream business, said in a statement on Tuesday. "StoreDot's technology shows real potential for car batteries that can charge in the same time it takes to fill a gas tank." The range on their batteries is said to be 300miles but the product won't even start to be commercialised until 2019. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/bp-invests-in-israeli-battery-startup-storedot.html NISSAN: VEHICLE TO GRID SERVICES WILL NOT DRAIN EV BATTERIES Finally Nissan Europe chief Gareth Dunsmore has responded to suggestions that V2G, which is being led in many ways by Nissan because of the CHAdeMO connector, and he says: "“It is not draining the battery, it is using the battery to balance the grid. It uses the battery, but it also puts energy into the battery; it is going up and down rather than draining. Draining the battery is not where the value is for the energy company or the customer.” Accoring to The Energyst: Mike Kerslake, UK technical manager for Chinese battery firm BYD, said V2G services for those customers may require a change of service model in terms of battery ownership and management. “Perhaps the vehicle owner doesn’t own the battery, but it is [instead] leased from an energy resources company, who also gets value from the vehicle to grid capability,” said Kerslake. “So there is quite a potential change in the way it works.” https://theenergyst.com/nissan-vehicle-grid-services-will-not-drain-ev-batteries/ I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. General Motors Co. hasn't turned a profit in Europe since the late 1990s. Still, the business is improving. GM's European division lost only $257 million in 2016 after $813 million a year earlier. That's why carmaker PSA Group, which owns Peugeot and Citroen, is in talks with GM to buy the business. Analysts estimate GM's European unit, known as Opel, could be worth about $2.8 billion. That may not sound like a lot, but the division brought in a whopping $18.7 billion in total revenue last year. Bloomberg reporter Ed Hammond and Executive Editor Jeff McCracken tell Alex Sherman why GM has struggled for so long in Europe and why it wants to finally exit the region.
