While Gerard is doing his rock star concert at TedTalk Berlin, Laurent has invited an old friend, Roger Atkins, Top Voice on EVs to discuss the people behind the EV revolution. Roger has a 40 year career in the Auto industry (half of them in EVs) and his cowboy hat makes him a fixture of great EV shows around the world. Roger talk about his encounters with Robin Zeng - CEO CATL, Wang Chuanfu – founder BYD, Elon Musk, Jack Cheng - co-founder NIO, Bob Gallien – ex GM and CTO CATL, Li Shufu – founder Geely and a lot of other formidable people pushing the EV revolution. We also talk about the people we admire Michael Dunne, Robert Llewellyn and Simon Moores. Thanks to them, we see clearer. And in EVs as in any sector, culture easts policy every morning for breakfast.--------------------------------------------------------------VERY IMPORTANT: We are doing a Q&A Episode in NovemberAsk us whatever you want!!! Tu & Lei begin the podcast with an explanation of what Single's Day is in China and how some EV brands are participating, namely by launching promotions to help sell their vehicles. They both then begin to talk about Q4 and the mad dash by all the automotive players in the China market to finish out the sales year on a high note. Q4 alone can sometimes make or break a brand's annual sales. The podcast moves to a discussion on Li Auto's MEGA and XPeng's X9 MPVs and how they compare with one another and the both company's different approaches to market them. Polestar begins the next topic of conversation and it evolves into a broader discussion about Zeekr and Geely who owns both brands, specifically what Li Shufu is trying to get out of the spate of IPOs for his companies with the Zeekr still on the way.The podcast ends with a brief discussion about the mobile phone connection with EVs and then whether its the right time for a Chinese EV company to be IPO'ing in the US.

Tu and Lei start out with a discussion about the challenges of China's overall economy and some of the stimulus that the Chinese govt. has announced they'd provide in order to get it jumpstarted. Shanghai is finally opening back up on June 1st, so factories should begin to product more product consistently in June and beyond but Tu cautions that any outbreak could jeopardize the recovery. Lei then shifts the conversation over to May sales numbers and how he expects BYD to be much further along in their sales volume than the other EV makers. This opens up a broader discussion about BYD including their boldness in entering the ultra luxury market with a vehicle launch later this year that's supposed to be in the ¥1.5M price range but they both question whether BYD is stretching themselves too thin?Tu shifts the conversation over to Jidu and their impending vehicle unveil scheduled for June 8th. Jidu is the brand that was created by a collaboration between Geely and Baidu. Lei laments that their messaging is a bit confusing, specifically the claim on being a ‘autorobot' and he wonders if Jidu is overpromising what the product can deliver? The pod moves onto the news about the strategic investment Bosch made into WeRide the Guangzhou based autonomous vehicle startup and the possible reasons for the investment and how they could provide each party access to an area that they currently lack or that isn't available to them.Tu and Lei close out the show with a brief discussion on ECarX, the software intelligence startup owned by Li Shufu aka Eric Li, the founder of Geely and then a quick chat about XPeng's earnings as well as who they believe may be moving to the US market first.
Csütörtöki rendes autós rovatunkban a stúdióban járt Várkonyi Gábor, autós szakértő.
In this episode you will meet Joe Lin and Jerker Andersson. They are both winner of the 2018th Shufu Award, founded by Geelys chairman Li Shufu. Their backgrounds differ a lot but there are also similarities. They have made great achievements for the Geely group and they are both passionate about their work. We talk about what made them winner of the award and what it has meant for them to receive this achievement. Welcome to Garaget International!
#354 The Brazilian GP, Formula E and The Hyperloop. “The Ocon Incident”. Could electric racing be just about to overtake F1? Would you get into one of Elon Musk’s 700mph pods? Plus, Sniff Petrol on Verstappen, Vandoorne and a Victorian vehicle.
Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 24th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. REMOTE SPEED LIMIT FOLLOWING LATEST TESLA SOFTWARE PUSH Steven Loveday at InsideEVs writes: "Tesla’s recent over-the-air update adds a speed-limiting feature that is available via the mobile app." So why do that? Well if you've waited two years for a Model 3 and lend it to a friend, leave it somewhere for a service, or even take it to a valet, you might want to restrict how much of that performance they can use. "According to Electrek, this new feature is part of software version 2018.24 and Tesla mobile app update 3.4.1. While the feature can be controlled via your smartphone and the Tesla app, you still have to be with the car to enable it while in Park." https://insideevs.com/tesla-update-allows-remote-speed-limiting/ MERCEDES SLOWS DOWN BEFORE IT SPEEDS UP com: "Mercedes is pulling its PHEV C-Class, GLC and GLE-Class models from the market as it readies their new, next-generation replacements, which are due out next year. The outgoing PHEV models are being replaced with EQ-branded models that feature Mercedes' nine-speed transmission and electric motor all in one unit." So EQ is the name for any form of electrification. On the topic of the next era of plug ins, carbuzz say: "Top speed in electric mode has been raised to 87 mph (up from 81 mph in the second-generation). In addition, the electric range is up to 31 miles compared to only 21 miles in the second-generation." VW PIKES PEAK RACER com: "[VW's] I.D. R Pikes Peak, which was unveiled in April, will debut on Sunday, equipped with two electric motors that allow it to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in under 2.5 seconds. The car was faster than any other vehicle up the first 5.2 miles of the course in qualifying on Wednesday. The course’s design makes even finishing difficult for humans and gas-powered vehicles. Thin air depletes racers’ energy and their cars’ engine capacity." LI SHUFU HAS A US$15 BILLION DREAM FOR GEELY’S LONDON BLACK TAXIS Chris Gubbey, chief executive of London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC): "If you take this quintessentially London product and turn it into a zero emission, purpose-designed taxi, it can become a transport solution and a contributor to improving air quality in every major city across the globe. Geely’s founder Li Shufu wants to “bring the product to the new world and into the new generation,” he said in an interview with the South China Morning Post. "Geely paid £11 million (US$14.6 million) in 2013 for The London Taxi Company, followed by another £295 million to build a new factory with the annual capacity to assemble 20,000 vehicles, while another £30 million were invested to develop a commercial van." "Meanwhile, work began last month on a 7.2 billion yuan (US$1.1 billion) factory in Yiwu with the capacity for 100,000 electric vehicles a year. The Yiwu model, a variant of the black taxi, will be modified and adapted to Chinese preferences and tastes to serve a niche segment of premium ride-hailing services in China." HONDA SHOWCASES ITS 6,000 SOLAR PANEL ROOFTOP INSTALL com: "Honda flipped the switch on a new solar energy system at the American Honda Motor Co., Inc. campus in Torrance, Calif., one of the largest solar arrays on a commercial building in Southern California, and at 2.0 megawatts (MW) direct current, one of Honda’s largest on-site renewable energy installations anywhere in the world. The new solar array features more than 6,000 panels and is expected to generate approximately 3,000-megawatt hours (MWh) annually." Home Charging Challenge, Daimler EV Investment and Autopilot Upgrade | 25 Feb 2018 Chinese Investment In Daimler With EV Projects In Mind | National Newspaper Says 2% Of Owners Have Home Chargers | Tesla Looks To Workplace Chargers | Profits Up For VW As Electric Plans Move Forward | Tesla Autopilot On Verge Of Major Update | Porsche 911 Could Electrify Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and future transport. My name is Martyn Lee and this is your EV News Daily for Sunday 25th February 2018. On the podcast today… we’ll talk about free Tesla chargers for where you work, and strange surveys…. GEELY GO AFTER THE GERMANS …but first Chinese EV maker Geely has invested in Daimler, and they’ve invested enough to be the largest single shareholder. Now Geely already own Lotus, Proton, and Volvo since they bought it from Ford in 2010 – who earlier this week we were talking about making a PHEV V60 model, plus the new London Black Cabs which are EV REX. Plus of course they recently spun off Polestar from Volvo to make expensive, high end electric cars. It seems it’s Geely’s owner Li Shufu who has made the investment, which is just under 10% of the company around £6.4bn, or $9bn. So what’s behind the move? Well the owner of Geely is a billionaire to he’s clearly a good businessman. The Mercedes EQ brand has been getting a lot of publicity and, from the details we’ve had, is well regarded in terms of the progress they’ve made with developing EV drivetrains for their cars. There are economies of scale too; the new LEVC black cab has recognisable bits switchgear from a Volvo for example. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/102743/geely-buys-a-10-stake-in-mercedes-benz-owner-daimler-ag MAJOR SURVEY SAYS 2% OF EV OWNERS HAVE HOME CHARGERS Next let’s’ talk about how EVs are written about by the mainstream media. It’s a Sunday and as people sit down to read a Sunday newspaper supplement – although fewer and fewer people do these days – what did the Sunday Times Newspaper here in the UK have to say about EVs? 2,000 people were surveyed, 16% saying the next car would be a BEV, PHEV or hybrid. And yet it says a third would have to drive 10 miles to charge it. The survey was done by CarWow. It says 2% of those with an EV already have a charger at home. And that doesn’t seem to make sense. I can’t think of any question CarWow would have asked, even singling out PHEV drivers or including all soft hybrid cars as “electric”, to get a result so low. There are 140,000 EV’s sold here in the UK and 100,000 home chargers have been installed. Andrew Hooks is the COO of Carwow and we tried to connect with him on Twitter to reach out to him to ask about methodology, and now they get the 2% figure, but we doesn’t seem to be on social media. When their PR are back in the office on Monday I’ll follow it up. https://www.driving.co.uk/news/middle-classes-drive-electric-car-boom-nowhere-charge-battery/ As for where and when you charge, we reported last week about a large US study of LEAF owners who had charging at home and at work, and 96% of all charging was done in either location. And now Tesla are getting into workplace charging. Now Tesla has announced it wants to work with large workplaces to install free chargers for Tesla owners as long as the employer pays for the electricity. For most people, they’re at work for 8-10 hours a day, and then at home 8-10 hours a day so, between both locations, their charging should be covered. With a Tesla charger you could just charge at work if you live in an apartment or don’t have parking at home. https://arstechnica.com/cars/2018/02/teslas-new-workplace-charging-program-would-corner-office-parking-spots/ PROFITS UP FOR VW, AS EV PLANS TAKE SHAPE VW Group posted record earning on Friday. I’m torn as I still own a Golf, I love VW quality, I’ve had two golfs, but I really hate their culture on emissions, animal testing to further their diesel agenda. So on one hand Dieselgate was a turning point when I said I’d never own another VW, but their investment into electrification is huge and you can see from the top of the company the direction they’re going in. The Dieselgate emission scandal has cost them $30bn already, that’s about £21.5bn, with more set aside. However profit is up to almost $14 Euro helped by the top end of the market, like Audi and Porsche. Of course, coming soon is the E-Tron and Mission-E respectively. https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-volkswagen-results/vws-profitability-may-take-a-hit-from-electric-vehicle-shift-idUKKCN1G71XD?il=0 TESLA AUTOPILOT ON THE VERGE OF MAJOR UPDATE Tesla is beta testing its new Autopilot. Tesla already have billions of miles of autopilot driving logged and advances to its Neural Net system is said to be at the core of these improvements. We heard a few weeks ago from Elon Musk saying a new version was coming soon, so Tesla owners are probably close to getting an update. The question that’s still being asked: is Autopilot 1.0 better than Autopilot 2.0? https://electrek.co/2018/02/23/tesla-autopilot-beta-testing-new-autopilot-update-with-new-feature-neural-net/ LEGENDARY 911 COULD GET BATTERIES And finally, the legendary Porsche 911. Porsche hasn’t exactly made a ringing endorsement for electrification but they said they wouldn’t rule it out, and that the most positive they’ve been. https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/hybrid-electric/a18701912/electric-porsche-911-porsche-interview-news/ TESLA WANT TO CHARGE YOUR CAR AT WORK Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested.
