There's been a flood of news these past weeks about the slowdown in EV sales.Challenging market conditions and the high cost of funding the transition to EVs is giving manufacturers cause for pause. Tesla is halting work on further factories, and GM and Honda scrapping a partnership to produce affordable EVs, for example/Meanwhile, Mercedes EQ models are sat unloved and unsold on dealer lots, and the Chinese are struggling with overcapacity. So what the heck is going on? Is this just the expected chasm between the early adopters and the early majority of consumers in the EV adoption curve?Or are there more fundamental issues with the product, sales, and service being offered by OEMs that will make that chasm so much harder to cross? That's it for this episode! In a feature length season review episode The Race's Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith and are joined by double DTM champion and now Mercedes EQ team manager Gary Paffett. The victorious season for Mercedes and Stoffel Vandoorne gets the deep dive treatment as does the German manufacturers legacy in Formula E after leaving the all-electric series on a high. The trio choose their top performing drivers of the season and mull over some excellent individual performances from Mitch Evans, Jake Dennis, Edoardo Mortara and Pascal Wehrlein. At the other end of the scale fans of Porsche and Antonio Giovinazzi should be advised of some stark appraisals after scrappy 2022 campaigns. All this and extra amusement via Smith's Seoul taxi debacle, VDB's gripe over the difficulty in finding Formula E races to watch on TV in the first place and some smugness over pre-season predictions add to the 2022 valedictory feel. As well as the old, the new striking Formula E design car is also discussed after a crucial recent test at Varano in Italy in addition to the latest driver market moves as Gen 2 morphs into Gen 3. The Race Formula E podcast welcomes newly crowned ABB FIA Formula E World Champion Stoffel Vandoorne as he savours a hard-earned title sealed in Seoul last weekend. The Mercedes EQ driver gives an extensive appraisal of how he achieved his first title since his 2016 GP2 triumph and how he soaked up the pressure to beat a feisty challenge from Mitch Evans. The former McLaren F1 driver talks Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt through his season of supreme consistency and how races at Berlin and Marrakesh were vital to his successful campaign. Vandoorne also gives us insight in to the new-look qualifying format and the fresh hierarchical nature of the racing which he and many of his title rivals enjoyed much more this season. In addition to the new champ's insight, Sam and Andrew also discuss Edoardo Mortara's win, Oliver Rowland's astonishing pole lap and the eight-car melee (or was it a shamozzle?) that red flagged Saturday's race. All that and the very latest driver moves and latest paddock insight direct from Seoul are mulled over in a final racing review episode of the 2022 season. London called, and Formula E answered in what is being considered as being one of the best events the all-electric world championship has put on in recent years. Guest host Jack Nicholls is joined by Sam Smith and Avalanche Andretti's Roger Griffiths, who with driver Jake Dennis was the toast of the UK's capital last weekend after a dominant victory and a close second to Sunday victor Lucas di Grassi at the ExCeL centre circuit. In a packed show the trio discuss the diminishing title fight after Stoffel Vandoorne again capitalised on reliability misfortune for Mitch Evans and incident packed races for both Edoardo Mortara and Jean-Eric Vergne. There were plenty of afters too as Mercedes EQ got embroiled in an aborted choreography plan, while Sebastien Buemi and Pascal Wehrlein almost came to blows in the pit-lane and had to be separated by Griffiths' commercial director and occasional columnist of The Race, Jim Wright! In addition to the London action there is also a look ahead to Seoul and Griffiths reflections on Andretti's BMW journey which has roots stretching all the way back to the start of Formula E. Mitch Evans joins Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith to pick the bones from a dramatic double-header in Brooklyn, New York City last weekend. The Jaguar TCS Racing driver proffers his opinion on the controversial decision not to re-start the Saturday race after a localised cloudburst sent several cars, including the leader Nick Cassidy crashing off the track in a bizarre Takeshi's Castle style ending to the race. Evans kept himself in the title hunt with a third place in Sunday's event but Jean-Eric Vergne's non-score casts doubt on his credentials now of grabbing a third title. The trio also look into the confusing penalty given to original Sunday pole-sitter Cassidy, the first win in 14 months for Antonio Felix da Costa and Evans' energetic battle with Mercedes EQ's Nyck de Vries. A look in to whether this was the last New York City event is also discussed, as is the upcoming London EPrix at ExCeL Arena where several track changes should spice up the racing and the title fight. The intricate choreography of DS Techeetah pair Jean-Eric Vergne and Antonio Felix da Costa and how it allowed Edoardo Mortara the little extra breathing space he needed is mulled over, as is the chronic braking difficulties that blighted James' charge Stoffel Vandoorne. The trio also take a look at how the teammates of the ‘Gang of Four' at the head of the drivers title fight will have a say in where the title rests in just over a month's time when the world championship concludes in Seoul. Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) will dispose of the passenger car business of its Gauteng West own-retail operations, as well as a portion of its commercial vehicle business, held in Sandown Motor Holdings (SMH), to the Motus Group. The value of the deal is not disclosed. SMH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of MBSA. The proposed disposal of SMH forms part of MBSA's implementation of Project Focus, which resulted in the earlier spin-off of Daimler Truck from the Mercedes-Benz car business on a global level. The rationale for the spin-off was to enable Mercedes-Benz and Daimler Truck greater entrepreneurial flexibility and agility, the independence to focus on its strategic direction in respect to electric mobility transformation, improved customer centricity and the opportunity to unlock their full potential. “MBSA's proposed sale of SMH is the next logical step in the growth of our company,” says Mercedes-Benz Cars and MBSA executive director Mark Raine. “A simplified corporate structure will enable MBSA to focus on the next phase of the company's growth premised on customer centricity, and the . . . Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach and Mercedes-EQ brands.” The proposed disposal will include the following dealerships: Mercedes-Benz Sandton, Mercedes-Benz Constantia Kloof, Mercedes-Benz Bryanston and a single commercial vehicle dealership in Roodepoort.

BLACKROCK COULD PUMP HALF A BILLION EUROS INTO HIGH POWER CHARGING "The US investment firm BlackRock is to lead a capital increase of 750 million euros by the Ionity joint venture, which intends to use the money to expand further its high power charging network, German media reports. There is also an indication of the next expansion stage." says electrive: "Manager Magazin refers to people involved saying BlackRock itself would invest 500 million euros as part of the capital increase. According to the report, the remaining 250 million euros would come from Ionity's existing owners, i.e. Audi and Porsche from the VW Group, Daimler, BMW, Ford and Hyundai-Kia. The capital increase would value Ionity at 2.25 billion euros. The US investor would thus have a 22 per cent stake in the charging joint venture. However, Ionity has not confirmed the capital increase or BlackRock's investment. The fact that Ionity is looking for external investors has been apparent since last winter. As the carmakers involved wanted to accelerate the expensive HPC expansion, they aimed to attract private equity capital. The two sets of 4-wheel dynamometers can test whole electric vehicles, components or real battery pack tests. By adjusting the roller force and using big data applications, the intelligent test bench can simulate real driving conditions such as air resistance or different topographies. This allows comprehensive testing of next-generation electric vehicles at an early stage, under extreme conditions and throughout the year. The new eDrive lab also sets benchmarks in terms of sustainability and energy conservation: It is able to recuperate the energy of the tested vehicle back into the electric grid, which reduces the overall energy consumption significantly." The launch will happen by mid-decade, when it will be joined by a battery-powered C-Class sedan, the automaker told dealers this month according to Automotive News." says InsideEVs:  "Initially, the current iteration of the EQC was supposed to spearhead the launch of the Mercedes EQ sub-brand in the US in early 2020. However, after delaying the launch by a year, the automaker canceled plans to bring the EQC stateside.  Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has launched the EQS electric flagship in the US, but dealers are waiting for a GLC-sized electric crossover because that's where the big money is. The gas-powered Mercedes-Benz GLC was the brand's second best-selling model in the US in the first nine months of the year.  Mercedes US dealers' wishes will be granted, albeit in 2025, when the second-generation EQC will arrive as part of a fleet of electric vehicles Mercedes is launching in the US as it shifts toward an all-electric lineup. But this could be slashed in half by setting an ambitious target to convert every car in the country to electric by 2035." reports The Guardian: "The modelling was released by the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), which commissioned accounting firm Deloitte to examine the community benefit from increasing the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs).  Petrol cars contribute heavily to air, noise and water pollution through the particles emitted from the exhaust and through the waste grease, oil and rubber needed to run them. By contrast, electric vehicles have fewer components and more efficient motors. As this pollution leads to illness, the cost ends up being borne by the health system." The company claims to offer EV makers an alternative to existing technologies that use cobalt as the main ingredient.  The new technology enables the prototype battery pack to have an energy storage capacity of 160Wh per kg, and the next-generation product's density is expected to exceed 200Wh per kg, according to Robin Zeng Yuqun, founder and chairman of CATL. He admitted that the new technology would have lower energy density. But he said it has several advantages over LFP, which include low-temperature performance and high charging speed." https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3153333/chinas-ev-battery-manufacturers-race-develop-new-technologies NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM When buying a used electric car, how do you feel about servicing? EV family   Show #1056   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 19th April. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MERCEDES LAUNCHES EQB - THIRD ELECTRIC MODEL THIS YEAR "Mercedes is ramping up its assault on the battery-car market with the launch of the new EQB sport-utility vehicle at the Shanghai Auto Show. Available with up to seven seats, the EQB debuts barely a week after the automaker unveiled its all-electric flagship, the EQS, the latter to serve as the battery-powered alternative to the classic Mercedes-Benz S-Class" reports The Detroit Bureau: " the Mercedes EQB’s dimensions are nearly identical to those of the conventional GLB crossover. But, like the rest of the new Mercedes EQ family, the new model mounts batteries, motors and other key electrical components below the load floor in a skateboard-like platform. The new model also integrates what Mercedes calls “Navigation with Electric Intelligence” which, it says, “contributes to the effortless handling of the EQB in everyday life. It calculates the fastest route to the destination, taking into account maximum charging power and the duration of possible charging stops."   https://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2021/04/with-eqc-mercedes-launches-third-all-electric-model-this-year/   "Due to go on sale in Europe and China later this year, the EQB will make its way stateside in 2022, targeting a group of competitors that seems to expand with each passing season. Just like the recently-revealed EQA, the EQB trades the grille of its gas-engined sibling for a nose cone with a glass finish" says Autoweek: "When it comes to the drivetrain, the EQB will be offered with all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive, at least in Europe. When it goes on sale there later this year the electric SUV will draw juice from a 66.5-kWh battery, giving it 268 hp in the 4Matic version and a range of about 260 miles in the WLTP cycle."   https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a36174507/mercedes-benz-eqb-debuts-in-shanghai-but-well-have-to-wait-for-it/   GM & LG ENERGY COMMIT TO SECOND BATTERY FACTORY IN TENNESSEE "General Motors is expanding its battery-building base. Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture company owned by GM and LG Energy Solution, announced April 16 that it will construct a second plant for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries. GM says the new, 2.8-million-square-foot plant will cost $2.3 billion and create 1,300 new manufacturing jobs." according to Industry Week: "The new factory will be located in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where it will supply General Motors’ nearby Spring Hill assembly plant, which GM said last October would transition to produce electric-only vehicles like the latest Cadillac models. GM and LG first announced the battery joint venture Ultium in 2019, when it announced the construction of a $2.3 billion battery R&D center and factory in Lordstown, Ohio. That location is slated to become operational sometime in 2022."   https://www.industryweek.com/leadership/growth-strategies/article/21161492/gm-lg-announce-new-23-billion-tennessee-ev-battery-plant   POLESTAR 1 SPECIAL EDITION "The Polestar 1 gets a limited-run special edition that wears a whole lot of gold in China. The company is making just 25 of them, and production begins later in the year. These cars wear a matte gold body, including the badges. The colour also shows up on the brake callipers. There are gloss black elements in the grille and portions of the lower fascia. Big black wheels fill the wings/fenders." says Motor1: "The Polestar 1 packs a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with two electric motors. This setup makes 611 bhp and 738 pound-feet, which is enough for the coupe to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds. The WLTP rating indicates the car can cover 77 miles purely on electric power."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/502108/polestar-1-special-edition-gold/   KIA RECEIVES OVER 1,000 EV6 PRE-ORDERS IN UK ALONE "The British division of Kia announced that to date (April 19), the company has received more than 1,000 pre-reservations for the all-new EV6 model in the UK. That's a significant number, considering just a single country. Together with other countries, Europe might turn out to be a bigger market for the EV6 than South Korea, where Kia received over 21,000 reservations on the first day." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The pre-reservation window, with £100 refundable deposit (€100 in most of Europe) will end on April 30. The first EV6 and EV6 GT-line will arrive in the UK in October 2021. The prices in the UK are: EV6: from £40,895"   https://insideevs.com/news/502052/kia-ev6-1000-preorders-uk/   BMW IX MAKES ITS WORLD DEBUT AT SHANGHAI SHOW "As part of show-and-tell day at the 2021 Shanghai auto show, BMW was on hand to roll out in person the upcoming iX all-electric SUV for the world to see." says auto123.com: "The BMW iX is noteworthy for a number of reasons, starting of course with its all-electric powertrain. But the model is also the first BMw to get the automaker’s brand-new Operating System 8 and the latest edition of the iDrive system. The future flagship model for BMW’s elctric division is constructed on the latest, 5th generation BMW eDrive platform, also tabbed for use with the iX3 and i4 models we’ve seen previewed in recent months. The system is designed around two electric motors that together develop around 500 hp, and a battery pack with a capacity greater than 100 kWh."   600km range, 200kW charging.   https://www.auto123.com/en/news/bmw-ix-electric-suv-presented-shanghai/68044/   HAWAII DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION BEGINS ELECTRIFICATION WITH TESLA DELIVERY “The Hawaii Department of Transportation picked up its first electric vehicle — a white Tesla — on Tuesday as the result of an innovative service contract that is expected to help electrify its entire light duty fleet. Eventually, nine EVs will replace regular vehicles used by the State Highways division, with another 34 expected to be delivered to DOT by the end of May." says the Hawaii Star Advertiser: "Under the 10-year service contract, state and county agencies do not have to purchase EVs upfront, but can procure them, as well as the necessary charging infrastructure, on a per-mile cost basis."   https://www.staradvertiser.com/2021/04/14/breaking-news/hawaii-department-of-transportation-begins-electrification-with-tesla-delivery/   VOLKSWAGEN EXPANDS ID. EV FAMILY "Volkswagen is expanding the ID. family of electric vehicles with a GTX performance line. Volkswagen will show the new ID.4 GTX on 28 April. In Europe, the respective performance models of the ID. Family will wear the logo GTX in the future. Similar to GTI and GTE. The GTX models feature an additional electric motor on the front axle bringing the all-wheel drive into the ID. family designed for maximum efficiency. The additional motor switches on intelligently within a few milliseconds when very high performance or strong traction are required. In the new “Traction” driving mode, it is even permanently activated." says Green Car Congress: "Volkswagen wants to become the most desired brand for sustainable mobility. The goal is to increase its share of pure electric cars in Europe to 70% of sales by 2030."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/04/20210419-gtx.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+greencarcongress%2FTrBK+%28Green+Car+Congress%29       QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   Would you buy a Chinese-made EV? Additionally, it looks like Lucid plans to add slightly wider glass to the rear as well, again allowing more natural light within the SUV and better visibility looking out the back."   https://electrek.co/2021/03/18/patent-reveals-new-images-of-lucid-motors-gravity-suv/   Let's mop up some of the news from Thursday as the UK cut the EV grant from £3000 to £2500, but more importantly slashed the threshold from £50k to £35k, and even more importantly did it immediately.   UK EV PRICES REDUCED DUE TO GRANT CHANGE   "Many car firms will now be adjusting their prices, like Citroen, to come in under the ceiling. Citroen’s price changes will mean all variants of the electric hatchback will now qualify for the government’s plug-in car grant. The French firm reduced the price of is top-spec e-C4 Shine Plus models by £550 meaning that the entirety of the range is eligible for the grant." says CarDealer Magazine: "On the road pricing for the e-C4 now starts from £30,895 to £32,495, inclusive of the £2,500 grant. MG said on Friday that it will continue to offer buyers of its electric vehicles a £3,000 discount. The firm pledged to make up the additional £500 until the end of the month in a critical plate change month for the motor trade."   AutoExpress add: "Shine Plus version of its new all-electric family hatchback is the most popular variant. It is just one of many electric cars on sale in Britain that may now receive a retail price cut in order to still qualify for the newly reduced grant.  This particular e-C4 was previously priced from £35,495 and the new on-the-road price stands at £34,995. The e-C4 makes use of a 134bhp electric motor and 50kWh battery system and Citroen claims a maximum range of 217 miles on a full charge."   As for the VW range, they opted not to change any prices. But did put out a press release reminding you that two of their ID.3 models were available under the threshold unlike just one which I said yesterday.  “D.3 Life Pro and ID.3 Life Pro Performance.  The ID.3 Life Pro Performance went on sale late last year and has since gone on to be crowned ‘Small Electric Car of the Year’ by What Car? at its Car of the Year Awards 2021. It features a 204 PS motor and 58 kWh battery (net capacity), which provides a WLTP range of 263 miles.  the ID.3 Life Pro was introduced and offers a new motor option and lower price for entry into the ID.3 range. It retains the 58 kWh batteryt”   And the new ID.3 Pure model with a 45kWh battery is out later this year.   https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/car-firms-move-to-cut-ev-prices-after-governments-shock-move-to-slash-plug-in-car-grant-funding/219685   HOW THE PORSCHE TAYCAN'S INNOVATIVE ELECTRIC MOTORS WORK "Many EVs such as the Audi e-tron use a more affordable asynchronous machine (ASM) or asynchronous electric motor, but Porsche uses a permanently excited synchronous machine (PSM) that it says is less prone to overheating." says Carbuzz: "Describing the supply and control of three-phase AC voltage for the PSM, Porsche says: "The speed of the motor is determined by the frequency at which the alternating voltage oscillates around the zero point from plus to minus. In Taycan motors, the pulse inverter sets the frequency of the rotating field in the stator, thereby regulating the speed of the rotor."   https://carbuzz.com/news/heres-how-the-porsche-taycans-innovative-electric-motors-work   EUROPEAN ENGINEERS TACKLE EV LIGHTWEIGHTING "Engineers at the Technological Institute of Aragon (ITAINNOVA) here are coordinating a new European Union initiative to develop lightweight components for electric vehicles." says AssemblyMag.coM: "These technologies can directly contribute to improving vehicle efficiency in terms of kilowatt hours consumed per kilometer, as well as vehicle autonomy, and also reduce environmental impact."...focusing on three different components: a cross beam, a suspension control arm, and a battery clamping and packing system."   https://www.assemblymag.com/articles/96240-european-engineers-tackle-ev-lightweighting   FOUR EVS MERCEDES IS BRINGING TO THE U.S. BY 2022 "The US was supposed to get the Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV but that didn’t happen and it never will. But that’s okay because the US will be getting four EVs over the next two years from the German luxury automaker’s EQ sub-brand. " according to InsideEVs: "Interestingly, two sedans will arrive first, not SUVs. The 2022 Mercedes EQS sedan will go on sale this fall and will soon enter production in Germany. The report didn’t mention a reveal date, but it’s likely around the corner. The EQE sedan is based on the same platform as the EQS and deliveries will start in 2022. The driving range is in the area of 400 miles.  Mercedes-EQ’s two electric SUVs will be built in its Tuscaloosa, Alabama factory in 2022 (this was announced in December). Each one is an SUV variant of the EQS and EQE sedans and shares the same name."   https://insideevs.com/news/494819/these-four-evs-mercedes-bringing-us-2022   NISSAN IN TWEET STORM AS E-POWER AD HITS A FALSE NOTE "Twitter has been ablaze with users airing their views on what they consider misleading claims by Nissan. They say the company hit the wrong note when proclaiming that the e-Power drive has a “100% electric motor-driven system.”" reports electrive: " the drive’s main energy source is not the battery but a gasoline engine that acts exclusively as a generator. Twitter users know that. Their responses ranged from irritation – “wait, is it a hybrid?” – to distain as this example shows: “Wait a minute. You just invented a car with a gas burning engine which powers an electric motor? I mean… Congratulations, Nissan. You just invented the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. What a billion dollar facepalm.” Nissan is not alone in trying to make their cars sound greener than they are. We remember that Toyota and Lexus would repeatedly advertise their simple hybrid models as “self-charging”. A claim so misleading, the Norwegian Consumer Agency banned such commercials."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/17/nissan-in-tweet-storm-as-e-power-ad-hits-a-false-note/   SPAIN, SEAT, & IBERDROLA WILL USE EU FUNDS FOR EV BATTERY FACTORY "Spain plans to use funding from the European Union to create a public-private consortium with Volkswagen Group’s SEAT, based in Spain, and the power company Iberdrola to build Spain’s first EV battery factory. " says CleanTechnica: "Battery production would create many jobs, and it would be supporting the key need for much more climate-fighting cleantech, in this case electric vehicles. Spain was looking to revamp Nissan’s main car plant near Barcelona into a battery production facility in order to preserve thousands of jobs. That plant closed back in December.".   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/03/17/spain-seat-iberdrola-will-use-eu-funds-for-ev-battery-factory/   VOLVO GROUP VENTURE CAPITAL INVESTS IN DRIIVZ EV CHARGING SOFTWARE COMPANY Volvo Group Venture Capital has invested in Driivz Ltd., a leading global EV charging software company which has developed a platform for managing large charging networks for electric vehicles from end-to-end. The Driivz platform functions as an operating system for EV charging networks and is used by the operators of charging points, EV fleets and other key players in the ecosystem. A joint pilot project between Volvo Trucks, the Volvo Group and Driivz is ongoing with the aim of developing and testing new and innovative charging services to meet the specific needs of electric truck customers and drivers.     You can listen to all 1026 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. ALL-ELECTRIC MERCEDES-BENZ EQA NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER "The all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQA is now on sale, with the entry-level EQA 250 Sport priced from £40,495 on-the-road including the plug-in car grant* (£43,495 excluding PiCG). The EQA 250 AMG Line is available from £41,995 (£44,995 excluding PiCG)." EQA is newest member of the Mercedes-EQ family and is the first all-electric compact car from the brand Two trim lines available: Sport and AMG Line The 66.5 kWh lithium-ion battery provides a range of up to 263 miles On sale now, with first UK deliveries expected Spring 2021 100 kW DC on-board charger allowing it to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in around 40 minutes 8.9 0-62mph   Helpfully, the UK website actually says NOT on sale yet. So press release department not talking to sales department?   For Germany electrive says: "In their home market, Mercedes gives a starting price at €47,540.50 As this results in a netlist price of less than 40,000 euros, the EQA is eligible for the innovation premium of 9,570 euros (federal share: 6,000 euros, manufacturer share: 3,000 euros plus 19% VAT) in Germany. The EQA would then cost 37,970.50 euros, including VAT there."   And they explain why it's on sale in the UK, but not on sale: "the EQA’s eligibility for the plug-in car grant is still pending, awaiting final confirmation from the UK Government’s Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. Until final confirmation the vehicle will not even appear on the portal, so no applications can be made."   https://www.mercedes-benz.co.uk/passengercars/mercedes-benz-cars/models/eqa/explore.html?pid=passengercars_eqabanner_eqaExplore_cta1_int_040221   https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/04/mercedes-eqa-now-available-to-order-in-germany/   DAIMLER TO BE RENAMED MERCEDES-BENZ DURING HUGE CORPORATE SHAKEUP " Daimler will be renamed Mercedes-Benz as the result of a massive corporate shift in strategy. In a move designed to focus on a zero-emissions, software-driven future, Daimler’s Supervisory board and Board of Management agreed to evaluate plans for a separate listing of Daimler Truck. " according to Motor1: !this move makes quite a lot of sense because rather unsurprisingly, each respective company knows best how to serve its customer base. We can already see this with Daimler Truck, as the industry giant already stands as the world’s largest truck and bus producer in Europe, North America, Asia, and many other areas of planet earth."   "Daimler will create the world’s largest standalone commercial vehicle manufacturer as it splits its truck and Mercedes-Benz car businesses into two public companies. It will list its trucks arm separately, paving the way for one of the largest German flotations this year and allowing both companies to focus on different emissions-free technologies." according to Financial Times: "While Mercedes-Benz has ploughed several billion euros into battery-electric technology, Daimler Trucks has taken a much broader approach.          The two Daimler companies’ largest markets are also diverging. The largest chunk of Daimler Trucks’ revenues come from the US followed by Europe, whereas China is by far Mercedes’ largest and most profitable market."   https://www.ft.com/content/64910c9a-75c4-4e7b-9ca6-2d35c009498d   GERMANY HITS 21.7% PLUGIN SHARE IN JANUARY "Germany, Europe’s largest auto market, hit 21.7% plugin electric vehicle share in January, up over 3× from January 2021. This is already substantially above 2020’s breakout annual share of 13.5% and not far off December’s extraordinary peak of 26.6%. Overall auto sales volumes were down 31% in January 2021, with petrol combustion vehicles dropping more than 50% in volume year-on-year." says CleanTechnica: "We have to assume that the Volkswagen ID.3 and Renault ZOE were once again duelling for the BEV lead in January, and that the Hyundai Kona and Volkswagen ID.4 were up there also."   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/02/03/germany-hit-21-7-plugin-share-in-january-up-over-3x-year-on-year/   FORD DOUBLES ITS INVESTMENT IN ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES "While Ford’s last quarter sales were down $2.3billion, there’s a spark of hope in the automaker’s plans. Ford also announced a doubling of its investment in electrified vehicles to $22 billion through to 2025 and an increase in its total investment in automated driving to $7 billion from $4 billion." says NExt Green Car: "The Mach-E is Ford’s first purpose-built electric car but Ford has already announced two other fully-electric vehicles. We can expect the e-Transit van, which will be launched later this year, and Ford is planning an electric version of F-150 for 2022."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9083/ford-doubles-its-investment-in-electrified-vehicles/   JAGUAR LAND ROVER TO OUTLINE EV PUSH DURING INVESTOR DAY "Jaguar Land Rover will disclose its future electrification plans during an investor day at the end of the month. JLR needs to inject momentum into its Jaguar brand and accelerate its push into electric cars as governments introduce tougher measures to reduce climate-changing CO2 emissions. Rumors have circulated in the motoring press that the automaker could make the Jaguar brand all-electric." according to Automotive News EUrope: "To preserve cash during the COVID-19 crisis, JLR delayed plans to launch a Jaguar XJ full-electric sedan"   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/jaguar-land-rover-outline-ev-push-during-investor-day   XPENG P7 GETS A COBALT-FREE LFP BATTERY " the Xpeng P7, now homologated with a cobalt-free LFP battery made by CATL. Remember that recently the Xpeng G3 also got a cobalt-free battery made by CATL." reports PushEVs: "The Xpeng G3 is already on sale in Norway and soon it will be joined by the P7.  If you want to know how serious an automaker is about electric cars, check the battery technology they use. While NIO and Li Auto are the Chinese automakers currently getting most of the media’s attention, I think that is BYD and Xpeng the ones with the best potential to grow."   G3 uses CHAdeMO.   "After sending the first batch of the G3 to Norway in last December, Xpeng is now sending the second batch of over 200 units. The Xpeng G3 is currently on sale in Norway with a 66 kWh NCM 811 battery from CATL, a WLTP range of 451 km and a starting price of 358.000 NOK (34.649 euros). When we heard about the Hyundai Kona EV and the Kia Niro EV, we went off to try sitting in them and were pretty much sold after watching a Youtube video made in the UK.   HOW IT'S GOIGN: I tried to find something better, or something used and cheaper, but eventually I found a dealer 250 miles away that was having a sale on E-Niros. Going up to buy it on the train and then driving home in a winter storm while needing to recharge was an adventure. That was about a year ago. Since then she is our car of choice. If we charge it to 90%, we can do two grocery trips without worrying about range.   STEPHEN MURDOCH How it started: Fully charged YouTube videos. How it's going: 24kwh Nissan Leaf. What I'd like: Rivian R1S or Porsche Taycan. Best I can realistically hope for: Nissan Leaf with a bigger battery.   LUKE   How it started: Got a gas guzzling Jaguar as a courtesy car, and it had a feature that told me how much fuel certain features used in the car. Aka heated seats, heater and radio. This got me really thinking about how we use fuel and energy in our transport.   How it’s going: drive a petrol Audi A4, currently saving up for a BMW 3 series plug in hybrid. This has 37 miles electric range which is more than enough for my daily commute, and yet has a petrol engine for holiday journeys and days out. And hopefully after that, it’s full electric and goodbye fossils.     GRANTON SMITH My interest in Hybrids began when I was shopping for my first new car in about 15 years ago... I was really keen on a Prius, but it wasn't meant to be - I ended up getting into a Diesel VW Golf, because it was "greener" due to lower fuel consumption... Liars! (I'm sad about that now!)   Again about 5yrs ago I was super keen on a PHEV Mitsubishi Outlander to replace our family car. But alas, the Mrs didn't like the seats (among other things), so the PHEV missed the cut.   How it's going: Tesla model 3 ordered... It's on the boat soon (hopefully!!). Zappi 2 on its way, solar installed and generating and I'm finally ready to drive my own EV!! I can't wait!!!

Tuesday 15th May 2018. MERCEDES' EQ WILL DEFINE AN ELECTRIC ECOSYSTEM As you may have seen on the recent Fully Charged show, the Mercedes EQ C is in the final stages of testing, in fact the body is so complete it's driving around in camouflage panels. So they're behind Jaguar but ahead of sister company Audi with the e-tron Quattro and BMW with the iX3. And it seems the EQ brand is central to their plans for electric cars. I did notice, as a keen F1 fan as well as Formula E, sometime ago now Mercedes added "EQ Power" to the side of their cars. "Putting the Mercedes line-up of full- electric vehicles under the EQ umbrella is meant to shine a light on the automaker's technical competence, says Britta Seeger, Mercedes-Benz global sales and marketing boss" according to Automotive News. But perhaps more importantly than clear branding they also REALLY want you to test drive one. And that means having one. Which sounds obvious but when you turn up a dealership, for any maker, and ask to test drive an electric car...you get mixed results. "Mercedes is working with dealers globally to set up test-drive events. So far, the events are with plug-in hybrid models and sibling brand Smart's electric vehicle. Dealers in Europe have been asked to keep one or two hybrid models on hand for test-drive experiences, Seeger said." I can imagine sections of the showroom different colours or styles for the EQ cars. However that might not be the best option. I wonder sometimes if they're making life harder by putting their cars in silos, especially those which are based on platforms which will also see combustion variants like the BMW and Mercedes. So rather than going into a showroom and there being a special area, EVs will almost need to be less special. Here are all our models, oh and these are electric. Comparing apples with apples if you like. On the flip side, you could argue that Tesla has done such a good job at stealing those big spenders, you could argue you should have electric specialists surrounded by only EVs. Automotive News continue: “Tesla sold an estimated 28,800 top-of-the-line Model S sedans in 2017, more than triple the number of BMW 7-series sedans sold and nearly double the sales of the Mercedes-Benz S class. Both the Mercedes and BMW large cars are down significantly from their U.S. highs.”   BAIC GROUP SELECTS MAGNA TO DEVELOP ELECTRIC VEHICLE ARCHITECTURE And whilst US and European EVs makers are just getting started, their production numbers are dwarfed by some Chinese companies. One of those being BAIC. As they say, they're not mucking around! Many of those companies have long held ambitions to conquer the domestic market, learn their lessons, and then sell their cars to USA and the rest of the world. Whilst that idea was seen as far-fetched by some recent research has show that, in terms of electric cars, 'Made In China' is not a problem. And so the news came through yesterday that one of those big Chinese manufacturers, BAIC, is moving into Europe. BAIC's EC series was the World's #1 selling EV car in 2017 - and only available in China. The Austrian Magna, those who make fully built cars for companies who need extra capacity for instance, have signed a deal with BAIC. And yes, Magna are the ones making the Jaguar I-PACE. The luxury I-PACE. “BAIC Group (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd.) and Magna today announced that they will jointly develop a next-generation smart electric vehicle architecture for the Chinese market. China is currently the leading market for electric mobility in the world, with around 700,000 electrified cars sold in 2017. By 2020, the number of all-electric cars on China’s roads is forecast to reach around five million, due in part to subsidies and quotas by the Chinese government. Magna was selected to be BAIC’s partner due to its innovative and cost-effective solutions throughout its complete vehicle manufacturing and engineering services as well as its full-scale electronic/electrical architecture and lightweight technologies"   ELECTRIC VEHICLES MAKE DRIVERS CALMER, HAPPIER AND MORE FOCUSED A new study undertaken by LEVC (London EV Company) has shown that the quieter driving environment of an electrically-driven vehicle can have significant mental health benefits. The work, in conjunction with academics from the University of York, has been released during Mental Health Awareness Week (14-20 May) which is focused on stress and stress reduction, and shows that moving from driving diesel to electric vehicles improves mental well-being for commercial vehicle drivers. In a world first, LEVC (London EV Company) commissioned an experiment to monitor mental activity - among a host of other physical factors - of drivers in both the new electrically-driven taxi and previous diesel model to find out if the quiet cabin of the state-of-the-art electric vehicle had an effect on the wellbeing of hard-working taxi drivers. The test was designed and executed by acoustics expert Dr Duncan Williams of the University of York and took place in central London with four professional cabbies taking to the wheel of both vehicles and undertaking a series of trial drives. An electroencephalogram, often referred to as a 'brain cap', was placed on the head of each driver. Electrodes within the cap monitored brain activity over a set route through the capital, giving previously unseen insight into the differing mental states between drivers of electric and diesel vehicles. Heart rate and audio readings were also taken too. Chris Gubbey, CEO of LEVC said: "Our aim with the TX was to make the world's most advanced taxi, a vehicle that would not only help reduce urban air pollution but improve comfort and convenience for passengers and drivers across the globe. We are delighted to find we have made a vehicle that is now proven to also make cabbies' working lives better. "Given that cabbies spend up to 12hrs a day driving, the vehicle is their office. We owe them a duty of care to provide the best working environment - and this study shows that driving our electric cab has a clear benefit for mental wellbeing. Next year we will be introducing a new electric light commercial vehicle, which means that the positive health implications of going electric will be extended to professional van drivers too." Unlike the previous taxi, the electric taxi’s multi-filter system works to remove gases and particles from the incoming air. In addition, an in-built air quality sensor also automatically closes the external air intake if it detects increased levels of pollution in the outside air - protecting passengers, and the driver, from the capital's often poor-quality air.   TESLA REGISTERS SHANGHAI ELECTRIC CAR FIRM AHEAD There's a new name in Electric Cars. It's, ahem, Tesla! Tesla has registered a new electric car firm in Shanghai, as China prepares to scrap rules on capping foreign ownership of new-energy vehicle (NEV) ventures" report Reuters. "The new company will focus on electric cars, spare parts and batteries, according to the filing. The new company, Tesla (Shanghai) Co Ltd, was registered on May 10, according to a filing with the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System seen by Reuters. Tesla Motors HK Limited as the sole shareholder in the firm." Elon Musk recently said he'll be naming the chosen location for the first Chinese factory which means they won't have to face import duty on cars made in the US and sold in China, plus that the Chinese Gigafactory will have all functions under one roof.   TESLA UNVEILS NEW LARGE POWERPACK PROJECT FOR GRID BALANCING IN EUROPE Tesla are on a roll recently releasing new videos, yesterday we say the official Tesla twitter account release details of another installation of Powerpacks, this time in Belgium and designed to balance the grid. In case anyone has forgotten the Gigafactory isn't just flat out making battery packs for all three Tesla models, but also the expanding part of the Tesla Energy business. 140 Powerpacks in total have been shipped across the Atlantic to make a total of 18.2MW of power output. There will be one coming to the UK soon as well, and they replace gas generators which has previously been used to keep the grid balanced.   HERE'S THE MEMO ELON MUSK JUST SENT ANNOUNCING A MAJOR SHAKE-UP AT TESLA "Tesla CEO Elon Musk told employees Monday that the company plans to "flatten" its structure as it works to improve communication and trim activities "that are not vital" to its success" says CNBC. "To ensure that Tesla is well prepared for the future, we have been undertaking a thorough reorganization of our company. As part of the reorg, we are flattening the management structure to improve communication, combining functions where sensible and trimming activities that are not vital to the success of our mission. To be clear, we will continue to hire rapidly in critical hourly and salaried positions to support the Model 3 production ramp and future product development."   MAYOR SETS 2020 TIMETABLE FOR LONDON ‘ZERO EMISSION ZONES’ The Mayor of London has brought forward his aim to establish a series of ‘Zero Emission Zones’ in parts of the capital by five years, in the final draft of the London Environment Strategy published last week" says Air Quality News. "City Hall will seek to implement zero emission zones in town centres from 2020 and aim to deliver a zero emission zone in central London from 2025."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 6th March 2018.   Before I start, in the last few minutes the Geneva motor show has just seen the launch of the VW ID Vizzion, with some very good carpets but a lack of steering wheel, and the Bentley Bentayga Hydrid with a “statement piece” charging station.  I will decipher the press releases and talk more about what you want to know tomorrow.   I-PACE DRIVEN Firstly, car mags and journalists have been given their first taste of driving the new all electric Jaguar I-PACE as they arrive for the Geneva Motor Show. However these aren’t what you call in depth road tests and the drives were limited to a few minutes around a carefully controlled track designed by Jag, but we don’t care, the first reviews are in. Firstly Autoexpress who say “The I-Pace ticks the usual EV boxes, with instant torque delivery and the ability to slow down to a complete halt just by lifting off the throttle pedal. But there’s also impressive refinement from those dual motors; only a faint whine is audible under hard acceleration.” Car Magazine on the other hand praise the steering and how jaguar-y it feels. I presume that’s a compliment. They also noticed how aggressive the top level of regen was and inform us that Jaguar engineers say one pedal driving is suitable for 98% of all braking events. Until some more in depth reviews surface in May that’s all we have to be getting on with, but I’ll keep an eye on the in person comments at Geneva.   CUPRA EV SPECS On the podcast recently was news about Volkswagen’s Spanish division Seat, and their Cupra eRacer, the first touring car powered by electrons. At the time I lamented any actual specs because I’m guess you like me, enjoy a stat or two. Well now we have more details. It reaches 100km/h or 62mph in 3.2 Sec, onto an eventual 270km/h, thanks to 4 electric motors and continuous 402hp, which allow a peak of up to 670hp. The battery pack has 6,077 cells, weighing in at 450kg which makes up a third of the car’s weight Cupra e-Racer Technical Director, Xavier Serra says “One of this vehicle’s most surprising aspects has to be its power. The Cupra e-Racer can reach 12,000 revolutions, compared to the 6,500 of a petrol powered racer car, and all with a single gear.” It’s race-ready too, with a roll cage and racing displays. Will it ever race? Is this just proof of concept? And if so, can I please have it when you’re finished showing it off.   MERCEDES SMART CARS AND EQ POWER The Mercedes Benz Smart Cars have always been a little arms length from it’s parent. The showroom near here for instance has a separate building, logos and branding. It’s very different to Mercedes showroom. Now Mercedes are bringing the Smart electric into the fold, and making it part of their EQ brand of EVs. CEO of smart Dr. Annette Winkler said: “smart is electric, innovative, intelligent and totally unique, or in three words each: ‘smart EQ fortwo’ and ‘smart EQ forfour’. With the smart EQ fortwo/forfour, we are putting the first products from the Mercedes-Benz Cars EQ family on urban roads and showing how much fun electric mobility can be.” The new models also come with a more powerful onboard charger for level 2 charging, up to 22kW power. Staying with Mercedes they also launched their EQ Power plug-in diesel hybrid. They say that electrification via hybrid means that they are locally-emission free, which is somewhat of a caveat as they run on diesel. The powertrain will be available for C-Class and upwards, with benefits for efficiency and performance. But it still burns Diesel. The electric range of 50km is in line with what we’ve seen from other plug-in hybrids recently, this time with a 13.5kWh battery and onboard 7.2kW charger, with 2 hours charge time to full. They talk about pre-entry climate control, a benefit pure electric owners love, being part of their plug ins too. Their press release goes on to mention improvements in diesel, the combustion process and internal friction. I switched off slightly because it means you have all the bits of a diesel to go wrong and need servicing. I’ll leave you with a thought on hybrids. The threat of heavy fines from European Union regulators regarding manufacturers missing CO2 reduction targets, combined with a switch away from diesel cars by customers, is a cause for some very unhappy diesel fans in the boardroom. Many people are holding off buying a diesel, even a hybrid, after reading headlines of major cities banning use of the fuel.   FORMER OPEL CEO LOVES ELECTRIC Former Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann was the exec who wanted Opel to be an electric-only automaker, has gone all-electric himself with a Tesla and a BMW i3. You'd think he probably has a few ways to get a pretty steep discount at Opel. I joke of course, but Electrek point out the challenges of being pro-electric at an automaker where so much profit and jobs rely on selling combustion engines a little bit longer. His plan was hardly radical, he was giving 14 years or so to gradually phase out engine engines and pivot to EV's by 2030. However things didn't work out that way as GM sold their European division of Opel to PSA. He has form in electric cars too, having previously led VW's electric plans for a period. I do have sympathy for other execs, who have hundreds of thousands or even millions of employees and those in the supply chain, to take the jump from existing revenue streams to electric sales. They've also made long term investments into engines which have long life cycles and they need to recoup their R&D costs. Hopefully it will be self-fulfilling as they see competitors earn from EV's, more will take the leap.   DETAILS OF ELECTRIC FORDS The next generation of Ford Focus is one of the only cars not be featured at the Geneva Motor Show but we'll see more of it in April. Sources say the dash will feature a more prominent tablet sixed touchscreen, although not Model 3 levels of display. They are said to be using a soft hybrid 48-volt electric system to power an integrated starter-generator, an increasingly popular way to use electrons to supplement the engine and take away some of the duties the engine would have provided, such as pumps and belts and starters.   NISSAN LEAF COLD WEATHER TEST The Toronto Electric Vehicle Association has taken a new Nissan LEAF out in winter conditions of -7°C (19.4 Fahrenheit). During the motorway/highway test drive the LEAF energy consumption was 29.3 kWh/100 km (62 miles). Factors include the route, the temperature and even the heated seats. That's a long way off 151 miles by EPA measure, so start doing that sun dance and hope for warm weather. There was more love for the e-Pedal which every review I've seen raves about and also ProPilot.   READERS LETTERS I saw a story in a popular newspaper here in the UK which barely deserved the time to read it, as it said the recent cold weather we’ve had means that electric car batteries would run down “in no time” with heaters on, wonderfully vague and blatantly wrong. Now The Guardian have printed a response from a reader: “I had to laugh at John Richards’s worry about people freezing in stuck electric vehicles because their batteries would run down in “no time” while those in a petrol car could run their heater (Letters, 3 March). Running the heated seats and climate control for about seven hours costs about three miles of range for my Tesla.” Cat Burton Another reader replied: “My Renault Zoe has a battery capacity of 40 kilowatt hours, enough to run a one-bar electric for for 40 hours. I suspect my car would keep me warm longer than a petrol or diesel vehicle, without the added hazard of surrounding the car with noxious fumes.” Geoff Williams, Wolverhampton”   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Home Charging Challenge, Daimler EV Investment and Autopilot Upgrade | 25 Feb 2018   Chinese Investment In Daimler With EV Projects In Mind | National Newspaper Says 2% Of Owners Have Home Chargers | Tesla Looks To Workplace Chargers | Profits Up For VW As Electric Plans Move Forward | Tesla Autopilot On Verge Of Major Update | Porsche 911 Could Electrify   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and future transport.  My name is Martyn Lee and this is your EV News Daily for Sunday 25th February 2018. On the podcast today… we’ll talk about free Tesla chargers for where you work, and strange surveys….   GEELY GO AFTER THE GERMANS   …but first Chinese EV maker Geely has invested in Daimler, and they’ve invested enough to be the largest single shareholder.  Now Geely already own Lotus, Proton, and Volvo since they bought it from Ford in 2010 – who earlier this week we were talking about making a PHEV V60 model, plus the new London Black Cabs which are EV REX.  Plus of course they recently spun off Polestar from Volvo to make expensive, high end electric cars.   It seems it’s Geely’s owner Li Shufu who has made the investment, which is just under 10% of the company around £6.4bn, or $9bn.   So what’s behind the move? Well the owner of Geely is a billionaire to he’s clearly a good businessman. The Mercedes EQ brand has been getting a lot of publicity and, from the details we’ve had, is well regarded in terms of the progress they’ve made with developing EV drivetrains for their cars.  There are economies of scale too; the new LEVC black cab has recognisable bits switchgear from a Volvo for example.   http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/102743/geely-buys-a-10-stake-in-mercedes-benz-owner-daimler-ag   MAJOR SURVEY SAYS 2% OF EV OWNERS HAVE HOME CHARGERS   Next let’s’ talk about how EVs are written about by the mainstream media. It’s a Sunday and as people sit down to read a Sunday newspaper supplement – although fewer and fewer people do these days – what did the Sunday Times Newspaper here in the UK have to say about EVs?   2,000 people were surveyed, 16% saying the next car would be a BEV, PHEV or hybrid. And yet it says a third would have to drive 10 miles to charge it. The survey was done by CarWow. It says 2% of those with an EV already have a charger at home. And that doesn’t seem to make sense. I can’t think of any question CarWow would have asked, even singling out PHEV drivers or including all soft hybrid cars as “electric”, to get a result so low. There are 140,000 EV’s sold here in the UK  and 100,000 home chargers have been installed.   Andrew Hooks is the COO of Carwow and we tried to connect with him on Twitter to reach out to him to ask about methodology, and now they get the 2% figure, but we doesn’t seem to be on social media. When their PR are back in the office on Monday I’ll follow it up.   https://www.driving.co.uk/news/middle-classes-drive-electric-car-boom-nowhere-charge-battery/         As for where and when you charge, we reported last week about a large US study of LEAF owners who had charging at home and at work, and 96% of all charging was done in either location. And now Tesla are getting into workplace charging. Now Tesla has announced it wants to work with large workplaces to install free chargers for Tesla owners as long as the employer pays for the electricity.   For most people, they’re at work for 8-10 hours a day, and then at home 8-10 hours a day so, between both locations, their charging should be covered. With a Tesla charger you could just charge at work if you live in an apartment or don’t have parking at home.   https://arstechnica.com/cars/2018/02/teslas-new-workplace-charging-program-would-corner-office-parking-spots/   PROFITS UP FOR VW, AS EV PLANS TAKE SHAPE   VW Group posted record earning on Friday. I’m torn as I still own a Golf, I love VW quality, I’ve had two golfs, but I really hate their culture on emissions, animal testing to further their diesel agenda. So on one hand Dieselgate was a turning point when I said I’d never own another VW, but their investment into electrification is huge and you can see from the top of the company the direction they’re going in.   The Dieselgate emission scandal has cost them $30bn already, that’s about £21.5bn, with more set aside. However profit is up to almost $14 Euro helped by the top end of the market, like Audi and Porsche. Of course, coming soon is the E-Tron and Mission-E respectively.    https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-volkswagen-results/vws-profitability-may-take-a-hit-from-electric-vehicle-shift-idUKKCN1G71XD?il=0   TESLA AUTOPILOT ON THE VERGE OF MAJOR UPDATE   Tesla is beta testing its new Autopilot. Tesla already have billions of miles of autopilot driving logged and advances to its Neural Net system is said to be at the core of these improvements.    We heard a few weeks ago from Elon Musk saying a new version was coming soon, so Tesla owners are probably close to getting an update.   The question that’s still being asked: is Autopilot 1.0 better than Autopilot 2.0?   https://electrek.co/2018/02/23/tesla-autopilot-beta-testing-new-autopilot-update-with-new-feature-neural-net/   LEGENDARY 911 COULD GET BATTERIES   And finally, the legendary Porsche 911. Porsche hasn’t exactly made a ringing endorsement for electrification but they said they wouldn’t rule it out, and that the most positive they’ve been.   https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/hybrid-electric/a18701912/electric-porsche-911-porsche-interview-news/     TESLA WANT TO CHARGE YOUR CAR AT WORK   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested.   Just a reminder you can listen to all of our previous podcasts on iTunes, Google Play for your Android devices, and most recently now on Spotify’s Podcast section. Friday 16th February 2018. On the podcast today... It’s a Tesla triple whammy with three stories to start off with. The Tesla Roadster hasn’t been seen much since the launch (apart from a stop in Malibu which a Tesla spokesperson said was definitely NOT a breakdown!) but that just changed with an appearance at it’s Palo Alto HQ. https://electrek.co/2018/02/15/tesla-new-roadster-prototype-signting/ As for the Model 3, Bloomberg have created a tracker which they claim gives you a steer on production rates. They estimate production at 1,025 per week. Their online tracker combines VIN data of when they’re first submitted to when they’re officially registered. https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/tesla-model-3-production-tracker/ Finally we heard today that the 300,000 Tesla has been produced. https://electrek.co/2018/02/14/tesla-delivered-300000th-vehicle/ BMW are making significant investments in battery technology which they say will give them an advantage over others, with promising signs of solid state batteries working in the lab, although not in production yet. http://www.bmwblog.com/2018/02/15/bmw-already-working-solid-state-batteries-aims-competitive-edge/ The Kiwi’s are getting electrified with the launch of the first all-EV car sharing scheme - YooGo. 100 electric cars will be launched in 10 hubs, with a choice of BMW i3 or Hyundai Ioniq for rent at $15/hour. http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/02/20180215-eq.html The Geneva Motor Show is coming in March with some significant EV activity. The Jaguar I-PACE will get an official reveal, but so will the Mercedes EQ range. Ferrari are making noises about their future EV plans again, this time literally, by claiming it will sounds like a true Ferrari. How will they do that? https://www.autoevolution.com/news/ferrari-ev-will-sound-and-handle-like-a-proper-ferrari-says-marchionne-123537.html Reuters reports that VW are looking to Apple for design inspiration with their future range of electric vehicles. Again Geneva Motor Show will be the place where we see more about their plans. https://electrek.co/2018/02/15/vw-electric-vehicles-inspired-by-apple/ And finally, the Renault Electric Vehicle Experience Centre is to open in Stockholm. It’s a concept store which aims to educate the public about EVs and driving electric cars, with more planned in other locations. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/02/15/renault-electric-vehicle-experience-centre-renault-opening-first-dedicated-ev-concept-store/   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
