Tesla's Full Self-Driving might be facing trouble when it comes to a specific western state. The misleading term is being challenged by California lawmakers, who recently passed a bill in the Senate that could ban the software's name.According to the LA Times, the California Department of Motor Vehicles' rules don't allow the advertisement of cars as “self-driving” if they do not have the capability. This legislation would make such regulation a state law. The bill, sponsored by Senate Transportation Committee Chair Lena Gonzalez, will go to Governor Gavin Newsom for a signature. But don't expect the legislation, if signed, to immediately forbid Tesla from using the term "Full Self-Driving” in California. The DMV, which has not commented on the bill, will still need to enforce it. However, when the bill was gaining momentum in July, the DMV did file an administrative action against Tesla on false advertising. Last month, the DMV told the LA Times it would request Tesla be required to educate drivers about full self-driving capabilities. The DMV did not comment on whether Tesla would be able to continue using the term. Tesla's website mentions Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capabilities. Full Self-Driving features a traffic and stop sign control beta and plans to have auto steering on city streets some time in the future. But, Tesla includes a sentence that says the features "require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous." Tesla goes on to say, "Full autonomy will be dependent on achieving reliability far in excess of human drivers as demonstrated by billions of miles of experience."

TESLA LAUNCHES SUBSCRIPTION FOR FULL SELF DRIVING - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) said on Saturday it has introduced an option for some customers to subscribe to its advanced driver assistance software, dubbed "Full Self-Driving capability", for $199 per month, instead of paying $10,000 upfront. - Tesla said the subscription service is available in vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving computer 3.0 or above. - Tesla has been testing its new semi-autonomous driving software for city streets and last week released "FSD Beta v9" to a limited number of customers. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-launches-subscription-service-advanced-driver-assistance-software-2021-07-17/ TESLA LAUNCHES ITS FULL SELF-DRIVING SUBSCRIPTION PACKAGE FOR $199 PER MONTH - For those who own a vehicle without the FSD computer (HW3.0), they can still order the monthly subscription, but they are going to have to pay $1,500 for the computer upgrade, which is included in the $10,000 price of a direct purchase. Finally, Tesla is also selling the package for $99 per month for those who already purchased the now-defunct Enhanced Autopilot package, which already included some of the features in the FSD package. Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/07/16/tesla-launches-full-self-driving-subscription-package-199-per-month/ TESLA DEBUTS 'FSD' SUBSCRIPTION FOR $199 PER MONTH - One eligible owner shared a notice they received from Tesla on Friday with CNBC, which said:“Full Self-Driving capability is now available as a monthly subscription. Upgrade your Model Y ... for $199 (excluding taxes) to experience features like Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Auto Park, Summon and Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control. The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.” - FSD features are “subject to change, limited by region,” and can only be used on Tesla vehicles that have newer hardware and Autopilot technology installed.Drivers are responsible for tolls, parking or other traffic violations that happen in a Tesla that's operating with FSD features engaged.Tesla can increase the price for a subscription any time, but will give drivers a one-month advance notice before billing them at a new rate. Owners can cancel FSD any time but the company won't prorate their monthly payment if they do. Tesla can suspend or cancel a driver's FSD subscription if they use the technology, “for anything unauthorized or inappropriate” or for non-payment. Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/17/tesla-debuts-fsd-subscription-for-199-per-month.html SK INNOVATION TO GET 90M EURO IN INCENTIVES FROM HUNGARY - South Korea's SK Innovation Co. will receive incentives worth 90 million euro ($106 million) from the Hungarian government for investing in the country with a project to build a battery plant, the company said Sunday. The energy and chemical subsidiary of the nation's No. 3 conglomerate, SK Group, has been constructing its second battery plant in Europe with an annual production capacity of 10 gigawatt hours in Komarom, a northwestern city of the European country, the company said. - SK Innovation will invest 904.5 billion won ($792.7 million) to build the plant and start mass-producing batteries for electric vehicles (EV) next year. It's got plenty of range, ultra-fast charging, excellent comfort and lots of kit. The interior is vast and packed with the best tech here, plus it has great performance for the cash – a Mach-E with similar speed is on the wrong side of £50,000. The Hyundai is practical, refined and has its own identity, cementing a deserved win. - The Mach-E is a brilliant electric car, although in RWD Standard Range form it loses out when it comes to practicality, charging and range, hence its second-place finish. Yet the Ford offers the best driving experience in an electric car at this kind of price, with enjoyable handling and a responsive powertrain, plus it's packed with tech, and the entry-level model is pretty strong value, especially on PCP finance. - The ID.4 falls to third place, but it's definitely still a great choice. It's the most practical of these three and also the most comfortable. It has a slightly longer range than its rivals Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/hyundai/ioniq-5/355583/ioniq-5-vs-volkswagen-id4-vs-ford-mustang-mach-e BMW TESTS VEHICLE-TO-GRID EV CHARGING SCHEME WITH I3 FLEET - A group of 20 customers in Germany have been given BMW i3 electric cars equipped with the new technology, and an additional 30 are set to be delivered to business users over the next few weeks. - BMW hopes it will turn electric cars into ‘mobile energy storage devices' that can supply electricity to the grid when needed. - Those taking part in the pilot scheme will also benefit from a new technology package. This consists of new in-vehicle and backend technology developed by BMW; an intelligent charging wallbox from Kostal; and the networking for interconnecting the electric car, wallbox and electrical installation in the customer's building with the power grid from energy firms Bayernwerk, KEO and Tennet. BMW says the scheme is needed due to the growing need to control energy flows and consumption as the number of electric vehicles increases. The two-seater vehicle charges automatically in sunlight and has the option of swappable batteries if its charge is low. - Even in northern countries the sun gives enough energy for average urban use. The solar panel works in any light, also in the shade. The vehicle is powered by electric motors and batteries so it also works in the night, in winter or indoors . When extra range is needed, the portable batteries can be charged directly from a normal power socket. - Squad Mobility points out that, as the average person in this LEV segment drives 12 km per day, this is enough on most days. They are aimed squarely at the urban mobility space and can reach top speeds of 45 km/h (28 mph). Net Zero Week is part of this much needed momentum. The UK's national awareness week highlights our challenge and provides the best expert advice and information to help us all better understand the challenge and how to benefit from making changes. Our greatest pursuit requires us all to take on our fair share of tackling emissions to stop global warming. A devoted gearhead, Lunny's passion for cars has led him to swapping gas for electricity with new company Everrati. - The company's working on '89 to '93 Porsche 911s (called the "964" generation) for now, but expansion is on the way. - The team is from the likes of McLaren, Jaguar Land Rover, and more. Each car is extensively tested and set up before anyone outside of the company gets a look at it. - Everrati's Porsche 911 comes with a more tried and tested setup that'll make a certain group of EV fans very happy: a Tesla powertrain - If battery tech moves on, Everrati can upgrade its componentry. Or if you want to put a gas motor back, the conversion is fully reversible — though Lunny said Everrati can turn your Porsche's old engine into a coffee table if you'd like. Four of the six versions will be fitted with lidar units, a critical technology in autonomous driving with delivery expected to start from October - The P5 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon flagship SA8155P computing platform. The higher versions of 460E and 550 E are fitted with two lidar units, 12 ultrasonic sensors, five millimetre-wave radars and 13 high-resolution cameras. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NEXTMOVE TEST MODEL 3 WITH LFP BATTERY "Stefan Moeller has tested the car intensively over six weeks and covered more than 1000 test kilometers. His conclusion: “No other electric car has provided us with such stark test results so far.” The video shows advantages and disadvantages of this battery technology, because it’s not just about Tesla – other manufacturers are also relying on these batteries in the future. It will be shown why lithium iron phosphate batteries are technically a special challenge for all manufacturers!" "The car was first fully charged in two complete test cycles and then run down to 0% on the on-board computer display. The tests took place on dry roads and temperatures just above freezing on a flat freeway circuit around Leipzig. The results of both test runs were nearly identical, with a range of 230km, or 142 miles. The on-board computer showed 44 to 46 kWh withdrawal. The vehicle registration document shows 55kWh. The question of whether this value is gross or net was left unanswered by the Tesla press office when asked by nextmove." "A cold battery means higher internal resistance. This worsens the efficiency not only when driving, but of course also when charging. And something else curious happened during charging" "The Model 3 heats the battery first. Actually nonsensical, because in normal charging, the user approach is actually “I came to stay.” At home the charging time is not as important as at the Supercharger. But apparently Tesla does not want to charge the battery in cold status." "In the nextmove test, the car was emptied to 0% according to the display, but the internal (not visible) value of the BMS still showed 13% power in the battery. This high reserve of course explains the low ranges of the customers and why nextmove only got 44 or 46 kWh out of the battery as shown before." "CATL, confirmed that it took only nine months between the announcement of the Model 3 with this battery pack and the start of the delivery of LFP cells to Tesla. Normally, manufacturers take more like 2 years for something like that. So it sounds quite like the customers are in Beta Testing phase right now." "In a Weibo post, Tesla had asked owners to fully charge at least once a week. Not only that, they were to charge to 100 percent whenever the car was on the power source. Anyone familiar with Tesla’s communication policy knows that such a clear statement to customers is not made without necessity." https://nextmove.de/model-3-with-lfp-cells-the-big-nextmove-winter-test/ TESLA MODEL 3 ONCE AGAIN WORLD'S FAVOURITE EV 2020 Full year results for Plugin Cars: Tesla 499,535 VW 421,591 SAIC 272,210 Renailt-Nissan 226,975 BMW 195,979 "[VW] reduced its distance to the leader from 227.000 units in 2019 (368k vs 141k), to the current 78.000...Inclusively, the VW Group outsold Tesla in the last quarter of the year, by registering some 191.000 units, while the Californian maker had some 183.000 deliveries. Will this mean that VW will beat Tesla in 2021? I think it will be closer than this year, but i believe Tesla will still have the upper hand, but for 2022...All bets are on." says Jose Pontes on his EV-Sales blog; "On the final 2020 table, the Tesla Model 3 won its 3rd consecutive Best Seller award, with no real competition in sight, so it looks 2021 could be its 4th title in a row, which would equal the number of titles that the Nissan Leaf has won so far (2011, 2013, '14 and 2016)." According to these reports, 20 per cent of the company’s shares are being discussed for a reported sum of 36 billion US dollars. The South Korean newspaper Chosun had picked up on corresponding reports from Chinese online portals. Among others, the BYD environment was named as the source." reports electrive; "Tesla is said to be less interested in BYD’s electric cars than in its battery production. BYD once started as a battery producer and only began building cars later. With the ‘Blade Battery’, the Chinese manufacturer has a modern LFP battery, which, unusually for LFP batteries, is said to have a higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries with NCM cathode." https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/04/tesla-launches-supercharger-production-in-shanghai/ TESLA REINTRODUCES ENHANCED AUTOPILOT "Tesla has reintroduced the Enhanced Autopilot packaged in Europe and China with some features that were in the more expensive Full Self-Driving package. Elon said during the last earnings results that in China, [Full Self Driving[ was about 1% to 2%, which is “much lower than in other markets.”" according to electrek: "Several Europe-based Tesla customers who didn’t buy the FSD package are reporting now having the option to upgrade to “Enhanced Autopilot” in the Tesla app. The option is 3,800 euros (~$4,500) and has the following features taken from the FSD package: Enhanced Autopilot Navigate on Autopilot Auto Lane Change Autopark Summon" https://electrek.co/2021/02/05/tesla-reintroduces-enhanced-autopilot-some-fsd-features-europe/ RIVIAN IDENTIFIES SECOND OF 10 SHOWROOM LOCATIONS "Rivian, the EV startup, has announced that Chicago will be the second of its planned 10 retail locations. According to Crain's Chicago Business, the Windy City site is on W. Randolph Street in the Fulton Market neighborhood. It joins Laguna Beach, California, on the list of showroom sites the brand intends to open in 2021." says Autoblog: “The retail locations offer customers chance to check out the Rivian R1T electric pickup and R1S electric SUV in person. They won't be dealerships, however, since Rivian is planning to sell directly to customers, with deliveries slated to begin this summer" https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/07/rivian-ev-showroom-locations/ VOLKSWAGEN ID 6 PHOTOS LEAK "One look at this big electric SUV and you'd think you're staring at a new EV for the US, but alas, this is the Volkswagen ID 6 that's only confirmed for China at the moment. The photos of the ID 6, based on the ID Roomzz concept, made their way to Reddit from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Although it's based on the ID Roomzz, it doesn't exactly look like the concept car." says CNET: "The front face looks far more conventional than the sleek fascia designer fitted to the ID Roomzz concept" https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/volkswagen-id-6-photos-new-ev-china/ ITALY’S EV MARKET TRIPLED IN 2020 "The ugly duckling of electric mobility among Europe’s top car markets is finally turning into a swan. We are talking about Italy, home to so many historic motor brands, where a once almost inexistent EV market is now blossoming into a noteworthy player as Europe pushes towards transport electrification" reports Opportunity Energy: "With over 32,000 full electric cars sold (see Unrae data), the Italian BEV market tripled (!) in 2020, surging to 2.3% share in a car market reduced to less than 1.4 million vehicles (-27.7% YoY) by the effects of the pandemic. PHEVs also grew on par with pure electric vehicles, totaling more than 27,000 units – a four-fold increase YoY for a 2% share. At around 60,000 registrations combined, plug-in vehicles rose to 4.3% of the market, up from 0.9% a year before." http://www.opportunityenergy.org/?p=3220 LORDSTOWN MOTORS ELECTRIC PICKUP WILL USE “TESLA BATTERIES” FROM LG "Lordstown Motors recently revealed a new round of commercial, operational, and strategic development updates on the progress of its upcoming “Endurance” electric pickup truck. The most interesting part of that press release, though, was buried down in the fourth paragraph, which says that Lordstown Motors has signed a multi-year agreement to use batteries from LG Chem. That’s the same supplier Tesla uses — and, get this, it’s even the same battery." says CleanTechnica: "Lordstown Motors’ CEO Steve Burns had previously confirmed that the prototype Endurance made use of LG Chem’s 2170 cylindrical cell, which is the same cell used in both the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.. The most exciting part of the latest corporate update, though, is confirmation of the rumored Lordstown Motors electric van, with plans to use hub motors to achieve all-wheel drive, a low ground clearance, and a class-leading range. All of which will have it primed to form the basis for the world’s first series production electric RV. Factor in a $49 billion RV market" https://cleantechnica.com/2021/02/03/lordstown-motors-electric-pickup-will-use-tesla-batteries-from-lg/ FAST EV CHARGING NETWORK COMING TO TENNESSEE The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation announced Wednesday they are partnering to develop a statewide electric vehicle fast charging network to power the growth of EVs across Tennessee and reduce barriers to transportation electrification. TDEC and TVA signed an agreement to collaborate and fund a network of fast charging stations every 50 miles along Tennessee’s interstates and major highways. This initiative would add approximately 50 new charging locations, tripling the existing fast charging network. There are only 24 fast charging locations currently operating in Tennessee that are open to all consumers and support both charging standards common to EVs. https://www.tn.gov/environment/news/2021/2/3/electric-vehicle-fast-charging-network-coming-to-tennessee.html ELECTRIFY AMERICA ADD MORE SOLAR CHARGERS Electrify America, the nation’s largest public ultra-fast charging network, has officially added 30 solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging stations with two Level 2 chargers each to its network in the state of California. The off-grid, standalone chargers are strategically located throughout the Central Valley and inland areas of Southern California, intended to provide greater access to sustainable EV charging for drivers in rural parts of the state. With complimentary charging, the new solar units help combat two of the biggest barriers to EV adoption in these locations – access to public charging and affordability. The network ensured that more than half of these chargers were located in disadvantaged and low income communities, demonstrating the company’s ongoing commitment to serve these populations. Twenty of the 30 solar-powered charging stations are located at health care centers. With input from public and private stakeholders, Electrify America identified educational and health care institutions as ideal charging points due to high amounts of traffic and extended hours of access. Locations were selected after further analyzing communities with the greatest need for charging, existing charging options and local travel patterns, among other factors. https://media.electrifyamerica.com/en-us/releases/128 EVS WILL ACCELERATE PEOPLE’S ENERGY UNDERSTANDING The changeover to electric vehicles, coupled with the national roll-out of smart meters, will put people in the driving seat when it comes to managing energy use cleanly and efficiently. Here’s why. Making the shift to an EV makes energy into something tangible and gets people interested in finding out which are the cheapest charging times. This real-time understanding makes them more aware of how to use energy more efficiently, for example by charging their EVs at night when energy is cheap and plentiful. It can also prompt them to find cleaner ways to power their cars, and homes, through solar panels or a heat pump, for example. If every home and business in Britain had a smart meter, it would make it possible to measure the amount of energy we use as a country, where we use it and when. Through regular meter readings, smart meters can paint a picture of national energy use and demand – in close to real time. Having an accurate understanding of electricity and gas, allowing for peaks and troughs of demand and supply, is vital if the country is to move to 100% renewable energy. Transport Decarbonisation Director Graeme Cooper: “The problem with electricity is you can’t see it, smell it or touch it. Then you get a bill for it – a sheet of numbers you don’t understand and a figure for what to pay. This is probably the most fundamental change in our energy system we’ve ever seen, with electric cars as the trailblazers and smart digital as the glue connecting people to their energy.” Graeme sees the transition to electric cars as the gear change to people understanding energy consumption first hand – and therefore beginning to explore the energy and money-saving changes they can make to their lifestyles. https://www.nationalgrid.com/stories/journey-to-net-zero-stories/net-zero-know-how-evs-will-accelerate-peoples-energy?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=journey-to-net-zero NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK Regardless of tech or specs, who do you think is designing the best looking EV, and why? It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketlace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA IS PREPARING TO LAUNCH FULL SELF-DRIVING SUBSCRIPTION "Tesla is preparing to launch a new Full Self-Driving monthly subscription based on an update to its mobile app and it is putting a deadline on the newly reintroduced Enhanced Autopilot package." writes electrek: "Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla planned to release such an option “toward the end of the year”. With the FSD package’s price back into focus as Tesla reintroduced its Enhanced Autopilot package yesterday, we see evidence that the subscription launch might be imminent. While Tesla has had codes to prepare for a new subscription model for a while, this update closer to the end of the year could indicate that Tesla is preparing to soon release the new way to access its Full Self-Driving software. When confirming plans to offer a monthly subscription to access the features, Musk made it clear that buying the FSD package will remain the best option financially" https://electrek.co/2020/09/20/tesla-full-self-driving-subscription-deadline-enhanced-autopilot/ BUY THE ONLY 220-MPH RIMAC CONCEPT ONE ON THE MARKET "hat we have here is the only Rimac Concept One coupe on sale right. Yes, that Rimac Concept One, the ultra-rare electric hypercar Richard Hammond famously drove off a cliff in 2017 while filming an episode of The Grand Tour. Only eight were built, seven remain, and this is an incredibly rare chance for someone to acquire one of the fastest electric cars on earth. For $1.6 million—electric speed isn't cheap." writes The Drive: "The Rimac One is all-electric using a 90-kWh battery and four hub-mounted electric motors generating 1,224 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of instant torque. According to Rimac, this kind of performance allows the Concept One to reach zero to 60 in under 2.5 seconds and run silently all the way up to 220 mph. There’s not a lot of information on this car except that it has a little over 100 miles on the clock." https://www.thedrive.com/news/36559/nows-your-chance-to-buy-the-only-220-mph-rimac-concept-one-on-the-market UK POLICE & FIRE SERVICES BUY PEUGEOT ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Peugeot is seeing growing demand from UK Police and Fire services for electrified vehicles. The French company said, 13 per cent of the cars ordered were all-electric with the e-208 being among the bestsellers to serve in British emergency services." says electrive: "The all-new e-208, launched in January this year, accounted for 81 vehicles within the final total of 611 cars to 38 forces. These vehicles delivered have been put to operational use, supporting frontline activity across the UK, according to the Peugeot press information. The other vehicles on order include 308 and 308 SW, Traveller, 3008 SUV and 5008 SUV, Partner, Expert and Boxer vans as well as the all-new 208 and said e-208. Mayn of these are from Peugeot’s electrified line-up on offer in the UK." https://www.electrive.com/2020/09/20/uk-police-fire-services-buy-peugeot-electric-vehicles/ ACCELERATED ELECTRODE DRYING COULD REDUCE BATTERY PRODUCTION COST "The quality of Li-ion battery cells depends on the electrode layers that store the battery’s energy. Both the anode and the cathode material are applied in a thin layer of water-based or solvent-based paste onto a conducting foil made of copper (anode) and aluminum (cathode). Researchers of KIT’s Thin Film Technology (TFT) group developed a coating process that allows electrodes to be produced in less time than with traditional methods." says ChargedEVs: "EPIC focuses on energy-efficient drying technologies and optimal moisture management for the materials used along the process chain, from drying to cell assembly. TFT studies conventional drying processes, high-power radiators and drying management in general." TFT’s Dr. Philip Scharfer: "Higher coating speeds are particularly attractive when drying time can be reduced and the expensive drying line does not have to be extended." TESLA BATTERY DAY COULD INTRODUCE US TO THE WORLD OF DRY ELECTRODE MANUFACTURING. As per TEsmanian: "Currently, batteries use what's called a wet slurry technology to coat the electrode foils for a battery. What they do is they mix a super toxic solvent with some binder, with some carbon and with the active material. And then they run it through a drying line and those drying lines are hundreds of feet long and consume huge amounts of energy" In contrast, a binder, the carbon material, and the active material are mixed up in Maxwell's dry electrode technology, resulting in a dough or bubblegum-like substance which will run through a machine similar to an extruder. One of the benefits of using dry battery technology would be that it decreased the degradation of batteries.". and it could speed up the process by 16x. And from the UK Guardian "Patrick Hummel, an analyst at investment bank UBS, said he was expecting news of a battery containing so-called dry electrodes. These would be produced with a simplified manufacturing process that does not require energy-intensive drying before the electrodes are fitted in batteries. The rewards for developing that technology are potentially enormous for an electric carmarker, removing some of the obstacles to breaking the stranglehold of fossil fuels. Dry electrodes are expected to deliver gains in energy density of as much as 50%, and they could be cheaper to make too. They could also allow Musk to achieve his professed aim of eradicating ethically questionable cobalt from Tesla’s batteries" https://chargedevs.com/newswire/accelerated-electrode-drying-could-reduce-battery-production-cost/ https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-million-mile-battery-maxwell-dry-battery-electrode-technology https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/sep/20/sober-investors-hope-to-get-a-buzz-from-teslas-battery-day CHARGEPOINT REPORTEDLY CLOSER TO GOING PUBLIC "ChargePoint Inc., one of the world's oldest and largest electric vehicle charging networks, is nearing a deal to go public through a reverse merger with Switchback Energy Acquisition Corp, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The deal for ChargePoint could value the company at more than $2 billion (1.54 billion pounds) and be announced as early as next week, the sources said, cautioning that talks could still collapse and terms may still change." says Autoblog: "Switchback Energy is a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) which raised $300 million in an initial public offering in July 2019. A SPAC is a shell company that uses IPO proceeds, together with debt, to acquire another company, typically within two years. Investors are not notified in advance what the SPAC will buy. Nikola went public earlier this year through a SPAC merger while electric carmaker Fisker has agreed to a reverse merger with Spartan Energy Acquisition Corp." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/09/19/chargepoint-ev-charging-company-nearing-ipo/ GOLF GTE REVIEWED "Packing a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines the 112-horsepower electric motor with a 147 HP 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine, it does the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 6.7 seconds and has a 140 mph (225 km/h) top speed." reports CarScoops: "Compared to its predecessor, the new Golf GTE has a 50% bigger battery. The 13 kWh unit takes five hours to charge at 2.3 kW and 3 hours and 40 minutes at 3.6 kW, and gives the car a zero-emission range of around 37 miles (60 km) with a maximum speed of 81 mph (130 km/h). FORD MUSTANG MACH-E EASILY GOES 300+ MILES IN NORWAY "Ford is now testing its hot new Mustang Mach-e electric crossover/SUV in Europe. Naturally, the #1 place to take an electric vehicle is Norway, where approximately 70% of new vehicle sales are now electric (fully electric or plugin hybrid). That’s where Ford has been playing around with the Mustang Mach-E, and the results are looking good" says CleanTechnica: "ord shared that the “all-wheel drive model with a targeted WLTP driving range of 335 miles exceeded energy-efficiency expectations, travelling 301 miles non-stop from Oslo to Trondheim, finishing the journey with 14 per cent battery capacity remaining.” Not too shabby, and that’s not even the extended-range trim, which Ford expects to get a WLTP range rating of 379 miles." Ford press release says: “Latest testing shows charge time has improved by nearly 30 per cent from early estimates, reaching an average of 73 miles of range within 10 minutes using IONITY fast charging, when equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive.” The UK homepage at ford.co.uk still has the old time of 58 miles. And 370 miles (Model 3 LR is 348, for £3,000 less, 75kWh battery). 150kW peak charge rate. 99kWh gross. And if we're playing THIS game, the Model 3 can add 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes. https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/18/ford-mustang-mach-e-easily-goes-300-miles-in-norway/ PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO TURNED INTO SAFETY CAR "Porsche just introduced a new all-electric safety car in its Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland series, which this weekend had a 45-minute opening race on the Circuit de la Sarthe, as part of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France." says InsideEVs: "Meet the Porsche Taycan Turbo version, retrofitted to handle the job, but at the same time remain street legal. In fact, while the racing cars were transported on trucks, the Porsche Taycan Turbo safety car drove on its own from Germany to Le Mans on public roads. With 500 kW of power, 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds and more than 400 km (250 miles) of range, the Porsche Taycan Turbo is a pretty good choice for the purpose. It's not the first plug-in safety car, as several years ago BMW introduced the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 (and i8 Roadster) safety cars for the Formula E series, but it's one of the first that's all-electric." https://insideevs.com/news/444796/porsche-taycan-turbo-safety-car LUCID AIR MIGHT HAVE JUST BEAT TESLA’S PLAID MODEL S ROUND LAGUNA SECA "EV startup Lucid has only just announced its debut car, the Air, but is already setting its sights on lap records currently held by Tesla’s Model S tri-motor Plaid Edition. According to a trackside sleuth who goes by The Kilowatts on Twitter, Lucid was putting its tri-motor powertrain through its paces, and appeared to post a claimed 1 minute 33 seconds lap time at Laguna Seca racetrack in California. Scroll down for trackside footage of the Air in action." says The Next Web: "ccording to The Kilowatts, they recorded the Lucid Air’s time using their own stopwatch. Of course, this is an unofficial time, but on a racetrack where lap times are separated by fractions of a second, the Lucid seems to have a comfortable buffer over Tesla’s Model S Plaid Edition, which completed a hot lap of Laguna Seca in 1:36.55 last year. Lucid has been quite tight-lipped about its tri-motor setup, and the not-so-subtle leak of a Tesla trouncing lap time at its local racetrack is certainly a warning shot of sorts. Bear in mind, Tesla Battery day is next week, and one of the many things that could be announced is Tesla’s tri-motor Plaid Model S." https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/09/18/the-lucid-air-might-have-just-beat-teslas-plaid-model-s-round-laguna-seca/ FIRST TESLA MEGAPACK DEPLOYED IN UK TO HELP KEEP THE LIGHTS ON "In July Tesla Megapack and Tesla Autobidder AI entered the UK market. Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) and Harmony Energy have joined forces to launch their first UK battery system. This week, for the first time in the UK, a project using giant Tesla Inc. batteries was used to help balance supply and demand in Britain’s electricity market." according to Tesmanian: "National Grid spent 718 million pounds ($932 million) balancing the network from March to July to cope with low demand and high supply of renewable generation—39% higher than usual, according to BNN Bloomberg. A new computer system used by National Grid has allowed burgeoning technologies like batteries to be used in the balancing market more easily. The 7.5-megawatt Holes Bay energy storage plant in Dorset in southwest England is operated by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures BV and Harmony Energy Ltd." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-megapack-giant-batteries-are-being-use-in-uk-for-the-1st-time-to-keep-lights-on TESLA REINTRODUCES ‘ENHANCED AUTOPILOT’ "Tesla has reintroduced the ‘Enhanced Autopilot’ option – offering a cheaper alternative to the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package for existing owners. Finally, the automaker ended up making the Autopilot’s Autosteer and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control standard on its vehicles and bundled the rest of the features into its ‘Full Self-Driving package’ (FSD)." according to Electrek: "The automaker started selling the FSD package for $5,000 and it has gradually increased the price to now $8,000 – following an update earlier this summer. It is leaving Tesla owners with limited and expensive choices. Now Tesla has reintroduced the option of an Enhanced Autopilot package for $4,000 – breaking down some of the features previously only available in the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package;. It’s the same Enhanced Autopilot package that Tesla used to offer and includes all the features that don’t require the automaker’s latest onboard self-driving computer." EA is: Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, Summon. https://electrek.co/2020/09/19/tesla-reintroduce-enhanced-autopilot-alternative-full-self-driving/ CHINESE CARMAKERS LAG BEHIND IN NEV QUALITY: SURVEY "China is the world's largest market for new energy vehicles, but Chinese carmakers still lag behind international companies in terms of vehicle quality, according to a JD Power China study released Thursday." says China Daily: "The study also finds that international brands perform better in the exterior, infotainment system, seats, powertrain, and interior categories, while Chinese startup brands like Nio exceed in driving experience, battery and charging. new energy vehicle owners not only expect technological and smart in-vehicle features, but also require high quality. That means carmakers must deliver vehicles with both high quality and advanced technology. In August, sales of new energy vehicles reached 109,000, up 25.8 percent year-on-year, according to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers." http://www.chinadailyglobal.com/a/202009/17/WS5f6328eea31024ad0ba7a387.html MERCEDES EQS SPIED REMINDING US IT WILL TECHNICALLY BE A HATCHBACK "Now that the new S-Class is out and about, we’re gradually turning our attention to its electric equivalent in the vast Mercedes range. Unlike the EQ C based on the GLC, the EQS will distance itself from the S-Class by riding on a dedicated electric car platform. We can say the same thing about the styling as while the two crossovers have similar proportions and some common design traits, the EQS looks far more futuristic than the traditional Daimler flagship." reports Motor1.com: "A fresh batch of spy shots from the Nürburgring reminds us Mercedes is taking a more practical approach compared to the Taycan and E-Tron GT. While the Porsche and Audi EVs are sedans, the EQS will be a hatchback / liftback as denoted by the visible outline of the large tailgate in the adjacent images. The Tesla Model S has a similar setup, whereas the electric Jaguar XJ and BMW i7 will be sedans judging by the most recent spy photos." https://www.motor1.com/news/369809/mercedes-benz-vision-eqs-frankfurt/ HIGH-POWER CHARGING TRUCKS BECOME MOBILE POWER SOURCES From Track Experiences to the Ice Experience in Finland, the Taycan is now an integral part of Porsche’s customer driving programmes. However, not everywhere provides the adequate infrastructure for charging the electric sports car en masse. Meet Porsche’s innovative solution: a fleet of stand-alone, high-power charging trucks that offer mobile charging on demand. The Hungaroring in Budapest was the venue for a special Porsche Track Experience just a few days ago, where “Soul on Track” offered customers the opportunity to test the Taycan on a circuit. Such driving events present organisers with a particular challenge, however: when a large number of Taycan cars need to be charged quickly and simultaneously, the local infrastructure isn’t always up to the job. Without a satisfactory solution on the market, Porsche wasted no time in creating its own. With a power rating of 3.2 megawatts, ten Taycan can be charged simultaneously at maximum speed. The battery buffer storage unit has a capacity of 2.1 megawatt hours. This means that up to 30 Taycan in total can be charged by the energy storage unit. The latter is generally recharged with renewable power from the power grid. For example, during a three-week customer event in the Portuguese city of Portimao in November 2019, the power came directly from the nearby photovoltaic systems. The trailers can be recharged very quickly – under good conditions, they are fully charged again within four hours. https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2020/company/porsche-high-power-charging-trucks-mobile-power-sources-22285.html You can listen to all 893 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. TESLA UPDATE LETS DRIVERS STREAM SPOTIFY, NETFLIX, AND YOUTUBE "On Thursday, the latest over-the-air software update, known as Version 10, started rolling out to Tesla owners. The update packs in a lot of fun features, mostly for when the car is parked or charging." reports the tech site Mashable: "Games like Cuphead are coming to the Tesla Arcade and a new "Tesla Theater" application houses all the streaming video options. Caraoke is like it sounds: a karaoke interface with lyrics on the screen so you can belt out your favorite tunes. A Summon update will let you "summon" your car from a parking spot if it's in your line of sight. This is only available for drivers who have the Full Self-Driving version or Enhanced Autopilot package. Other updates will streamline Sentry mode, and the new mysteriously named "Joe mode" lets you lower the volume for parking chimes and other alerts if you have a sleeping baby in the car. The mobile Tesla app that lets you control the climate, unlock the car, and other options was also updated and now you'll be able to remote-control windows on the Model 3 and Model X from the app. " ZDNet reports: "Along with Netflix, Tesla drivers will be able to view content from YouTube, and Hulu or Hulu + Live TV from the dash console. Tesla's self-driving capabilities aren't yet advanced enough for drivers to switch off and watch movies, and thankfully the company notes that you can "watch your favorite shows, movies and content right from your car while parked". The company says customers have praised summon it for its convenience after shopping, but notes that "those using Smart Summon must remain responsible for the car and monitor it and its surroundings at all times". The feature is available to drivers when the car is within their line of sight. Owners of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus and Standard Range vehicles will now able to stream Spotify, TuneIn, and Slacker when connected to Wi-Fi." And The Verge reports: "video recordings captured when Teslas are in their self-protect Sentry Mode are now stored in a separate folder from other camera content. A new “Joe Mode” is meant to avoid waking up sleeping passengers by reducing the volume of certain car chimes and alerts. And the Tesla mobile app can do a few more things and control even more aspects of the car remotely (like the windows)." SlashGear on China: "Tesla customers in China will soon get iQiyi and Tencent Video access in the car with more services promised in the future." Tesla says: "“We’re expanding our music and audio platform to enable Spotify Premium account access in all supported markets – one of the most requested features from Tesla owners. This will be in addition to Slacker Radio and TuneIn, which are also available in Tesla vehicles.”" If you pause the video which Tesla put online today, there's Car Wash Mode. But what is that? And on turorials: "Additionally, all customers will have access to Tesla tutorial videos to learn more about their vehicle." In fact if you play that YouTube video frame by frame it says this: Voice Commands Driving Visualization Maps Improvements Sentry Mode Improvements Software Update Improvements Application Launcher Updates YouTube Car Wash Mode Caraoke Spotify Cuphead Feeling Lucky Tesla Theater TESLA JUMPS ON REPORT MUSK AIMS TO DELIVER RECORD 100,000 CARS THIS QUARTER "Shares of Tesla jumped more than 5% after Electrek, an electric vehicle news website, reported that CEO Elon Musk said the company “has a shot” at delivering 100,000 cars this quarter, which would be a new record." says CNBC.com: "Musk wrote in the email: “We have a shot at achieving our first 100,000 vehicle delivery quarter, which is an incredibly exciting milestone for our company!” The CEO also reportedly added, “The challenge is making sure that we have the right car variants in the right locations and rallying as much as our company resources as possible to help with the end of the quarter deliveries.” The automaker is expected to report its quarterly vehicle deliveries in the next few days." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/tesla-jumps-on-report-musk-aims-to-deliver-100000-cars-this-quarter.html NORWEGIAN GAS STATION BECOMES FIRST IN WORLD TO REPLACE ALL PUMPS WITH ELECTRIC CHARGERS "Gas station" may no longer be an accurate description for a Circle K refueling outlet in Oslo, Norway, after it became the first in the world to replace all gas pumps with electric car chargers earlier this week." writes Newsweek: "The Oslo Circle K is one of the company's 16,000 gas stations around the world, but this location is the only one from any company to completely convert to electric fueling. The conversion to electric fuel "fast chargers" came at the same time as the United Nations Climate Action Summit was taking place this week in New York. Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian Electric Car Association, said in a press release that it "was extra fun to highlight this" at the same time world leaders were discussing climate change." https://www.newsweek.com/norwegian-gas-station-becomes-first-world-replace-all-pumps-electric-chargers-1461714 FIRST GAS STATION IN AMERICA TO DITCH OIL FOR 100% ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING "The first gas station in the U.S. that has been completely transitioned from a petroleum station to exclusively charging EVs opened Thursday in Takoma Park, Maryland." says CNBC.com: "RS Automotives, the local gas station, has been around since 1958. Depeswar Doley, owner of the station since 1997, said he was already unhappy with the way oil and gasoline companies structure contracts — such as limiting the use of multiple suppliers, including clauses that extend contracts when a certain volume of sales is not met and limiting maintenance support. These business factors already were pushing him to consider other options. A nudge from his daughter was the final step in convincing Doley to make the switch to EV charging. There are more than 20,700 registered EVs in Maryland, and the area also has an electric taxi service in need of more chargers for their business. The gas station conversion was jointly funded by the Electric Vehicle Institute and the Maryland Energy Administration, which provided a grant of $786,000." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/first-gas-station-to-ditch-oil-for-electric-vehicle-charging-now-open.html THE HYUNDAI VELOSTER N ETCR HAS HIT THE TRACK AND IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE A STAR WARS SHIP "Hyundai Motorsport hit the Hungaroring with its all-electric Veloster N to get the machine primed and ready for next year’s ETCR racing series. And man does it sound freakin’ cool." says Jalopnik: The Veloster N has a much higher pitch to its powertrain than fellow EV series Formula E. The company is turning its Italian HQ into an electric car centre of excellence, it says, confirming that all future Masers will be made in Italy." writes Tim Pollard for Car Magazine: "Maserati revealed that every new model in the pipeline will be either hybrid or full battery electric, and vowed that the switch from oil to volts wouldn't dent its commitment to 'innovation and the high performance embedded in the brand’s DNA.' It also committed to 'extended range and ultra-fast charging capabilities,' perhaps made easier by the brand's relatively late arrival into the electric car space." Follow Tim at @TimPollardCars https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/electric/maserati/ YOU CAN NOW BUY A PLUG-IN HYBRID BENTLEY BENTAYGA "Bentley's new Bentayga plug-in hybrid is now on sale in the UK with prices starting from a little over £133,000." reports Motor1.com: "The luxury 4x4 is described by its manufacturer as “the world’s first true electrified luxury car”, and offers an all-electric range of around 24 miles on the new and more stringent WLTP efficiency test. That’s provided by a 126 bhp electric motor, which is also used to eliminate turbo lag, while the power comes from a high-voltage battery that can be recharged in two-and-a-half hours." https://uk.motor1.com/news/373273/bentley-bentayga-phev-pricing-uk/ AUSTRALIA IS GETTING MORE ULTRA-RAPID CHARGING "Chargefox, which claims to be Australia’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, is increasing the number of ultra-rapid EV chargers it has in the country." as per Business insider Autralia: "The company revealed the target locations for all 22 sites in the first phase of its ultra-rapid EV charging network. It is part of Chargefox’s broader goal to have more than 100 ultra-rapid charging sites in the country. Chargefox already has 5 ultra-rapid stations open in, with 17 more in the works. All 22 will connect Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, with additional sites in Western Australia and Tasmania." Another day, another interview, this time, with none other than AEye President Blair LaCorte, as we talk all about the "biomimicry" magic that is AEye. What AEye are doing is a fusion of lidar and camera vision to merge 2D and 3D, and in so doing, to enable real-time focusing and only the things that matter, to essentially empower autonomous vehicles with a sort of "visual cortex" like the human brain. Otherwise, it would take at least 25 years to exceed human-powered vision. ALSO: My full 19-minute review of the Tesla Model 3 with Enhanced Autopilot is now live! Today: Japan is laying the foundation to prepare for Level 3+ autonomous vehicles in 2020 by letting drivers-not-driving to use their cell phones. Meanwhile, a new proposal for the various levels of autonomy -- currently SAE's five levels -- imagines a rather binary solution, i.e., a car either is or isn't autonomous. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 9th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. AUDI CONTINUE ADVERTISING E-TRON I’m not a fan of ads, but in my Twitter timeline I was very happy to see Audi spending money on social media with a 12 second video of the Audi e-tron in action. "Join the electric revolution. Order your #etron now" The link goes to beta.audi.co.uk/electric-car/e-tron.html with the heading "Electric Goes Audi". On the page the sections are The e-tron, Charging, Grants and Benefits, Finance and Service Plans, Technology, Pod Point and Formula E. THe e-tron from £71,490. The e-tron launch edition £82,240. "The special Launch Edition adds even more allure to the already stylish e-tron. 21” alloy wheels, black styling details and full body-coloured bumpers give the car an immediate and dramatic presence. Many advanced features, such as Matrix LED headlights, come as standard; others include the unique virtual door mirrors, Adaptive Cruise Assist and Comfort remote preconditioning. And for an extra sense of light and spaciousness, there’s a panoramic glass sunroof that displays the skies to all occupants. Image includes optional Catalunya red, metallic paint and black roof rails." CCS COMBO CHARGES TESLA MODEL 3 The very first European-spec Model 3's in Europe are in the hands of customers and immediately they headed not to Superchargers, but to the High Powered Chargers like Fastned and IONITY. Now some of them can't charge at the full 350kW because they're waiting for liquid cooled cables but they'll certainly do 150kW I gather. This is interesting because Tesla has always has its own connector but in Europe they're fitting the CCS Combo plug. So no more CHAdeMO adapter to purchase. The previous spec of CCS was limited to 200amps but the new protocol CCS2.0 allows for a lot more juice, and that's what I mean by High Powered Charger. And so the Netherlands-based Fastned, who tweeted a graphic with the charge speed they had recorded on their system. The MOdel 3 went straight to 125kW and stayed there to 50% state of charge, dropped down to 50kW at 75% and gradually went down from there and it tapered off. What I thought was interesting was that at 50% it drops off quite quickly. But is that unfair, because my experience of Supercharger a Model S it doesn't hit peak speed for that long, but the taper off seems more gentle. Let me know! (Explanation of why charge speed tapers for beginners) ELON FLIES TO EUROPE And isn't it weird what the internet can show us. As I was working today I saw tweets from people with plane tracker apps saying Elon Musk had taken off in his Gulfstream jet and was headed East, crossing the Atlantic. It soon because clear he was heading to Europe. It’s interesting because he asks for his callsign to be blocked so this was an aviation expert who worked out the route of the N628TS. He landed around 1715 local time in Ostend, near to where the cars were delivered to Zeebrugge. Not only is he very hands on with any issues, but also it’s fair that over the weekend he sees for himself the logistics on the ground. RENAULT ZOE TO GET CCS COMBO AND 22KW ONBOARD AC A story I came across because I follow Eric Feunteun, he's the Electric Vehicle Program Director for Renault: "The European passenger plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market ended the year on a positive note, registering a near record 40,500 units in December with the 2018 count ending at a record 386,000 deliveries" according to CleanTechnica. The Zoe was the December winner with 5,382 in the month, well ahead of the LEAF, the I-PACE and any Tesla. On the year 2018 the Zoe sold 38,538. "This positive score is the result of LG providing more batteries to the French carmaker, thanks to the ramp up of its European factory in Wroclaw, Poland. Without the battery bottleneck, we should finally see the real demand for the Zoe." And late last night I also found an article in French, so I was relying on Google Translate with this one. It's on largus.fr. The new Zoe is being revealed at the Geneva show soon, and will be based on the new Clio. Inside the main dash will be 7 or 10 inches, with the 10 inch dash also showing the sat nav just like the latest VW system. THen the centre screen will be 7" or 9.3", and have all the controls including climate. There's adaptive cruise and Level 2 self driving, so Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Jam system. The battery was upgraded in 2017 to a 41kWh. That stays although more power will be on tap, but they add CCS Combo plug AND 22kW onboard AC charging. That's the perfect combo. DC Fast Charging or AC Semi-Fast. One of my listeners Mike Winter explained it's because of the sheer amount of 22kW posts in France. Production starts in Q2 and marketed at the end of Summer. Still, apparently, there are several things that need to be refined before the sports coupe reaches the production phase." reports Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: "[Spy photographs show] a prototype of the car doing some high-speed tests on a frozen lake somewhere in Sweden. Almost every part of this trial car looks ready to be put on the assembly lines but the test drivers are probably gathering more data about the vehicle’s behavior under certain conditions." https://www.motor1.com/news/304493/polestar-1-spied-winter-testing/amp/ ALL-NEW 2020 KIA SOUL ELECTRIC SPOTTED IN NEW COLORS InsideEVs is talking about the new Kia Soul EV: "When it debuted in LA, the all-new Kia Soul EV was seen in just a color or two, but now we get to see the long-range electric in a plethora of new hues. These new images, captured at the Kia Irvine site, show us what the Soul EV looks like in colors other than that neon green. There’s a graphite Soul EV with a tan roof. A black version with a red roof and more." From Kia: The next generation Kia Soul EV celebrated its world premiere at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. One of the most upbeat urban compact crossovers is back with even more appeal & upgrades. The vehicle will be powered by a next-generation, state-of-the-art liquid-cooled lithium-ion polymer 64 kWh battery. That’s the same as what’s found in the Kia Niro EV, which goes some 301 miles per charge (WLTP) or an estimated 260 miles EPA. Considering that the current Soul EV, with its 30-kWh battery pack, is EPA-rated at 111 miles, we figure this 2020 Soul EV, with 64-kWh on board, will travel close to 240 miles per charge, maybe even more. Sadly, since its Kia, this will be a limited offering in the U.S., so availability will be an issue. The 2020 Kia Soul EV is set to utilize a 201 horsepower electric motor, delivering 291 lb-ft of torque. However, the new battery is currently being tested to ascertain precise EPA-estimated range. Results are expected early in 2019 and will be announced at a later date." The curb weight of the Soul EV is a lot less than the eNiro, so that range might be good! https://insideevs.com/2020-kia-soul-electric-spotted-new-colors/ TESLA AUTOPILOT APPROVED EUROPE "The Tesla Model 3 was officially approved for sale in Europe, but as it turns out the original Type Approval from RDW in the Netherlands doesn’t include the Tesla Autopilot" reported InsideEVs this morning, but then added: "Tesla has reportedly gained European approval for Autopilot." The approval for the feature arrived early on Friday from the Netherlands Vehicle Authority RDW. "The first Model 3 delivered to customers in Europe has disabled Autopilot feature, which according to Tesla is expected to be enabled in Europe next week, when a separate approval will be issued. The slight delay between car sales and enabling Autopilot is apparently caused by the requirement to additionally test the Autopilot for Model 3 (it has different hardware than Autopilot in Model S and Model X)." Meanwhile: "Tesla has opted to offer Enhanced Autopilot as standard for the electric sedan. As could be seen in Tesla’s order pages for China, the offer appears to be available only for Model 3 purchases. Pages for the Model S and X still list the driver-assist suite as a 46,300 yuan (around $6,800) addition." according to Simon at Teslarati: "The inclusion of Enhanced Autopilot is available for all Model 3 orders in the country, meaning even reservations for the Long Range RWD Model 3 –currently the most affordable Tesla available in China — include the driver-assist suite for free. CARLOS GHOSN QUITS AS RENAULT BOSS "Renault on Thursday announced that Ghosn resigned from his top spot as chairman and CEO of that automaker too, throwing into doubt the now-shaky alliance Ghosn helped forge between all three automakers" says Green Car Reports: "Under Ghosn, Nissan built and sold the first mass-market, fully electric vehicle sold around the world. In eight years on sale, Nissan has reportedly sold more than 386,000 Leafs according to the automaker, which makes it the world's best-selling electric car. Ghosn told CNBC in 2017 that the automakers he collectively ran profited on electric vehicles, which has been elusive for many automakers so far. In 2009, Ghosn spearheaded Nissan's efforts to produce the Leaf and sell it across the world. He committed billions of dollars to the Leaf's development, battery production, and marketing, and committed billions more to building and selling electric cars in China, the biggest opportunity market for automakers in the world." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121126_carlos-ghosn-electric-car-proponent-and-embattled-executive-quit-as-renault-boss FIRST TESLA MODEL 3 DEMO CARS ARRIVED IN EUROPE "In Norway during during the course of this month 17 Tesla Model 3 cars were already registered. These units are most likely all demo cars that will be available at the 12 Tesla Stores in Norway." says Pedro Lima at PushEVs: "The arrival of demo units happens just few weeks before first deliveries start to Norwegian customers. I’m curious to see how many units of long and mid-range will Tesla sell before making the standard range variant available. I think that most Europeans will wait for the cheapest and more efficient variant, since it will have enough range for European customers." I’ve seen three different posts on Twitter with photo’s of car carriers transporting Performance models. https://pushevs.com/2019/01/24/first-tesla-model-3-demo-cars-arrived-in-norway/ 2020 OPEL CORSA SPIED UP CLOSE WITH PRODUCTION BODY "Sticking to General Motors underpinnings would’ve meant paying a license fee, which is why PSA decided to go back to the drawing board and start development of the new Opel/Vauxhall Corsa from scratch. As a result, the new supermini will ride on the same Common Modular Platform (CMP) as the next-gen Peugeot 208" reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "While conventionally powered versions will likely employ PSA’s latest turbocharged three-cylinder PureTech engine with a 1.2-liter displacement, there will also be a zero-emissions variant that will go by the name of eCorsa. The electric hatch will ride on the e-CMP platform set to be used by an assortment of EVs within the PSA Group." https://www.motor1.com/news/302447/2020-opel-corsa-spy-photos/ POLESTAR 2 ELECTRIC CAR PLANS TO OFFER 'TRULY FUTURE-PROOF SOFTWARE SETUP' Inverse have taken a look at the Polestar 2 and how connected it will be: "In a wide-ranging description of the software, Polestar explains that the car will come with an “Android-based that’s always connected to the internet and receives over-the-air updates just like your smartphone.” The system will come bundled with “apps, services, and technologies that people already use every day on their smartphones,” including Google Maps, that are “designed and adapted specifically for an in-vehicle experience.” The car will also offer an embedded Google Assistant that supports car-based actions like changing the temperature. If these apps aren’t to the driver’s liking, the system will also support the Google Play Store." https://www.inverse.com/article/52702-polestar-2-electric-car-plans-to-offer-truly-future-proof-software-setup FREMONT, CALIF. TO PILOT A TESLA MODEL S POLICE CRUISER "Police in Fremont, Calif. are turning to a novel solution to get in line with the city's broader goal of lowering greenhouse gas emissions by preparing to launch a pilot program to use a zero-emission Tesla Model S fitted for police duty in daily operation." reports Autoblog: "Last year, the department purchased a used 2014 Model S 85 for $61,478.50, including taxes and fees, as a replacement for a more standard cop-issue 2007 Dodge Charger that was scheduled to be taken out of service. The department says it's working with vendors to install equipment like the light bar, a digital computer, rear flasher and a push bumper, with total modifications so far running $4,447 and expected to climb." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/01/24/fremont-tesla-model-s-police-cruiser/ TESLA MODEL S AND MODEL X PRODUCTION AFFECTED BY LAYOFFS As per the CNBC i mentioned yesterday: "According to an ex-employee who was involved in Tesla’s delivery operations, and a current employee who works for Tesla in Fremont, the layoffs appear to have impacted workers across every department and region from factory workers to recruiters and receptionists. But deep cuts apparently hit Tesla’s delivery, sales and Model S and X production teams." Tesla replied: "“We recently announced that we are no longer taking orders for the 75 kWh version of Model S and X in order to streamline production and provide even more differentiation with Model 3. As a result of this change and because of improving efficiencies in our production lines, we have reduced Model S and X production hours accordingly. At the same time, these changes, along with continuing improvements, give us the flexibility to increase our production capacity in the future as needed. We’ll be providing more details on our earnings call next week.” https://electrek.co/2019/01/23/tesla-model-s-model-x-production-most-affected-layoffs-report/ FORMULA E RACES THIS SATURDAY IN SANTIAGO, CHILE "Formula E hits the track again this Saturday, January 26th in Santiago, Chile, just two weeks after the last race in a racing series historically more accustomed to month-long breaks between races." says Jameson Dow for Electrek: "For those of us in the EV world, BMW driver Alexander Sims is someone to keep an eye on. He’s been a professional racing driver for several years now, but unlike many of the other drivers in Formula E, Sims also drives an electric car in his daily life. He was an early Tesla Roadster owner and also has a BMW i3 as a daily driver." https://electrek.co/2019/01/24/formula-e-races-this-saturday-in-santiago/ CHARIN: CCS COMBO STANDARD TO OFFER V2G BY 2025 "CharIN e.V. has released the roadmap for grid integration (V2H, V2G) of charging systems based on the Combined Charging System (CCS)." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "Initially, the organization was busy with the popularization of CCS around the world and increasing the power output, which is now set at 350 kW (or even more). The standard will also include grid integration features, but the timeframe is some 7 years from now before it will be ready, on par with CHAdeMO. There are five levels of grid integration specified: Today: Grid-compliant Charging Till 2020: Level 1 – V1G Controlled Charging Till 2020: Level 2 – V1G/H Cooperative Charging Till 2025: Level 3 – V2H Bidirectional Charging Around 2025: Level 4 – V2G Aggregated (bidirectional) charging" https://insideevs.com/ccs-combo-standard-v2g-2025/ TESLA TO ROLL OUT “SENTRY MODE” SECURITY SYSTEM "With the recent increase in Tesla vehicle break-ins and vandalism popping up across social media and online forums, CEO Elon Musk’s recent hint at an upcoming “Sentry Mode” feature for Model S, Model X, and Model 3 vehicles that are equipped with Enhance Autopilot hardware is both welcome and timely." says AstroJane for Teslarati: "The reveal comes via Twitter and in response to a customer’s complaint about a large dent found on his Model 3. “Tesla Sentry Mode coming soon for all cars with Enhanced Autopilot.” said Musk. Enhanced Autopilot (EAP), Tesla’s driver-assist software enabled in February 2017 with the version 8.0 software update, utilizes 8 surround cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors and radar.
