Scott interviews Professor Alfred McCoy about the history of the drug trade during America's decades-long involvement in Afghanistan. Before the 1980s, McCoy explains, drugs were not a significant part of the Afghan economy—but that all changed when President Bush's CIA began arming a resistance against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. These Mujahideen fighters turned to opium for their funding, quickly growing Afghanistan's opium trade to thousands of tons a year, and accounting for 70% of the world's heroin trade. When the Taliban wiped out the drug trade in the late 90s, the resulting economic devastation was part of what allowed the U.S. to achieve such a swift military victory. And throughout the U.S. occupation, drugs have once again become by far the biggest part of Afghanistan's economy. Opium, McCoy concludes, has been an inextricable part of nearly every significant event in Afghan history for the last 40 years, and it is impossible to adequately understand the issues facing Afghanistan without understanding the drug trade. In general, McCoy fears that U.S. withdrawal—which is virtually inevitable at this point—will trigger serious chaos, and may present another "fall of Saigon" moment. If this should occur, it may give war hawks an argument against pulling out of any protracted conflict like Afghanistan in the future. Discussed on the show: "The True Meaning of the Afghan "Withdrawal"" (TomDispatch.com) "President Ashraf Ghani on What U.S. Withdrawal Means for Afghanistan" (Foreign Affairs) Alfred W. McCoy is the Harrington professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His many books include The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade, A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, from the Cold War to the War on Terror and In the Shadows of the American Century: The Rise and Decline of US Global Power. Ghosts That Hunt Back TV - True Ghost Bigfoot and UFO Stories
What U.S. Submariners Actually Say About Detection Of So-Called Unidentified Submerged ObjectsBig claims abound about mysterious objects submariners detect below the waves, so we went straight to the source and what we found out was surprising. There has been a spate of high-profile claims regarding U.S. Navy nuclear submarines detecting and even interacting with the underwater equivalent of Unidentified Flying Objects, referred to in UFO circles as USOs, or Unidentified Submerged Objects. Yet when it comes to the covert world of naval warfare below the waves, it is easy for laymen to misinterpret things that may seem very much alien to them, but are actually quite commonplace. I reached out some of its submariner contacts, all of which have many years of experience aboard U.S. Navy nuclear submarines, to see if detestation of unidentified objects actually happens and what their thoughts were on the topic in general. We were surprised by what we heard. Real UFO Footage 2020 NEW

Police said in a statement that they arrested a 73-year-old man under the national security law. Although they did not name the man, we know it was Jimmy Lai. An entrepreneur, social activist, and longtime champion of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement. He is very active in social protest against the Communist Party of China, and he has made himself an enemy of the mainland. We will discuss what the situation is? What U.S. officials say about it? WHAT U.S. POLITICS MEANS FOR EVS From Reuters: "Biden is expected to quickly reinstate the legal basis for California’s zero-emission vehicle rules and begin the process of reversing the Trump administration’s decision to ease fuel efficiency and carbon emission requirements through 2025. Automakers could also face sharply higher penalties for failing to meet fuel-efficiency requirements. The Trump administration rolled back those penalties, which the industry said saved at least $1 billion in annual compliance costs, but a federal appeals court in August reversed the administration action." https://www.reuters.com/article/usa-election-autos-biden-idUSKBN27608S That said, Biden is also looking to bolster the EV economy in ways that appeal to automakers: via tax incentives for buyers as well as the development of a more comprehensive national charging infrastructure according to Jalopnik. "General Motors and Ford, the two largest automakers based in the United States, issued statements Saturday saying they look forward to working with President-elect Joe Biden's incoming administration on policies to support U.S. manufacturing and other issues. Have you heard of smart luggage? It may not sound like something you need but wait until you hear what it can do to make your travel more enjoyable and effortless. Connecting luggage to an app and building out the hardware to integrate the two has enabled Diego Saez-Gil’s company, Bluesmart to jump into a very competitive marketplace and gain a foothold with amazing speed. On this episode of Crossing Borders, Diego shares the story of his entrepreneurial journey, how he’s founded and funded his new smart luggage startup, and how he manages an international team with offices all over the world. It’s a fascinating example of the kind of innovation and forward thinking that’s coming out of Latin America these days. Startup success in a very crowded market. When Diego and his team were building WeHostels, his first startup, they realized it would be an uphill battle. The space they were entering already had big players like Airbnb and VRBO. But they believed that their unique focus and the unique experience of staying in a hostel would appeal to a certain demographic that could become a loyal niche audience. Turns out they were right. Diego tells me how he got WeHostels off the ground, what led to the sale of the company, and the lessons he learned in building, staffing, and navigating the acquisition, on this episode. Building a startup was like building a plane that was already in the air. Even though Bluesmart is a relatively new company, Diego Saez-Gil is no stranger to startups. He was co-founder of WeHostel, one of the first hostel-specific apps on the market that enabled users to make reservations on the move. The experience of building that company set him up for the challenges of building a physical product oriented company and the intricacies of leading an international team. On this episode Diego shares how his new smart luggage company Bluesmart was launched via crowdfunding, how additional rounds of support were secured, and the crazy pace at which the company has grown. As you’ll see from this conversation, Diego is a sharp guy who demonstrates why U.S. - Latin America based companies are poised to change the startup world. $2.2M raised for smart luggage presales in their first crowdfunding campaign. You've probably heard of many startup success stories that began with crowdfunding. Diego Saez-Gil’s story is the same, only bigger. His team was able to raise $2.2M in support in their first Indiegogo presales campaign and on this episode Diego shares how his team did it, including their approach to pre-campaign prep and marketing once the campaign was live. If you’re at all interested in the possibility of crowdsourcing your own startup, you should take the time to hear what Diego shared with me on this episode. What U.S. investors should know about connecting with Latin American companies. Bluesmart is a company with offices in New York, China, and South America, and founder Diego Saez-Gil likes it that way. He says the diversification of the team and the strengths he’s able to draw upon in those varied cultures makes for a company with many facets to its success. He advises U.S. based investors and companies to take a serious look at partnerships in Latin America. In his mind, it’s a trend that is only going to get smarter and smarter as time goes on - sort of like his smart luggage. The Grand Canyon as seen from the South Rim. (Photo by Roger Bolsius via Wikimedia Commons) On this date in 1908, the Grand Canyon was designated a national monument. Here are some things you may not have known about the natural wonder. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, its width varies from four to 18 miles across and it is more than 6,000 feet deep at some points. The canyon was created by erosion caused by the Colorado River and uplift of the surrounding plateau over the course of 5 to 6 million years. The Grand Canyon has been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years. The latest research suggests that the first people lived there around 1200 BC. Among the groups who have lived in and around the canyon are the Hualapai, the Havasupai, the Navajo and the Southern Paiute. The first European to see the Grand Canyon was Garcia Lopez de Cardenas, who arrived from Spain in 1540. The first European Americans to reach the Grand Canyon were part of a group of trappers led by James Ohio Pattie in 1826. In 1869, John Wesley Powell led an expedition down the Green River and Colorado River, starting in Wyoming. Following the expedition, Powell became the first person to use the term “Grand Canyon.” Until 1871, it had been known as the slightly less impressive “Big Canyon.” U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt visited the canyon in 1903, and protected the area as a federal game preserve in 1906. He re-designated it as a national monument in 1908. Claims by landowners and miners prevented the area from becoming a national park until 1919, when it became the 17th U.S. National Park. In 2015, the park was the second most-visited national park in the U.S., with about 5 and a half million visitors. Our question: What U.S. National Park is the most-visited? Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the United States, Children’s Day in Tunisia and Republic Day in Albania. It’s unofficially National Apples Day in Germany, and in the U.S. it’s National Milk Day, and National Hot Toddy Day. It’s the birthday of U.S. founding father Alexander Hamilton, who was born in 1755; women’s rights activist Alice Paul, who was born in 1885; and singer Mary J. Blige, who turns 46. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1974, the top song in the U.S. was “The Joker” by the Steve Miller Band. The No. 1 movie was “The Exorcist,” while the novel “Burr” by Gore Vidal topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. Now for our weekly question: Who was the first person to appear in a commercial for the iPhone? Submit your answer at triviapeople.com/test and we’ll add the name of the person with the first correct answer to our winner’s wall … at triviapeople.com. We'll reveal the correct answer on Friday’s episode. Links Follow us on Twitter, Facebook or our website.
