I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the supplement industry supply chain situation will get much worse, over at least the next 6 months, before it gets better. I know that's a bit of an ominous introductory statement, but you don't consume my content to be fed bullshit positive fake news. It's been about four to five months since I gave a proper update on the supplement industry supply chain situation. I recently took part in a SupplySide 365 webinar panel discussion with Mark Glazier (CEO/Founder of NutraBio) that surrounded the supply chain situation, outlook for the future, and strategies to manage it in the immediate term. I wanted to use this piece of content to summarize some of that information that was provided in the webinar, but also expand on it with as much up-to-date insights and information as possible. This is an unprecedented moment in recent business history. As Mark Glazier said in the webinar “if you combine all the supply chain problems from my last 25 years of experience owning a supplement brand that manufacturers its entire product line, it wouldn't even come close to what I've faced this year.” Even though my 12 years of experience as a strategist in the supplement industry pales in comparison, I echo Mark's thoughts 100%. There's A LOT of information on this topic and I'm going to do my best to keep it organized in a manner that's part informational and part actionable. Topics Covered Include: What are the ingredients being impacted? What's being impacted beyond ingredients (packaging, etc.)? What's going on in China? How long will the Chinese supply constraints exist? What's going on with international ocean freight? American logistical bottlenecks What can supplement companies do, if anything, to improve the situation? Why all the cost increases will hurt the consumer? Explain the possible price limits and category we will see break first? Explain if this situation ripens the market for inferior quality and/or adulteration? Discuss business death in the industry At the end of the podcast, I'll explain "ideas to consider going forward" in the supplement industry. These include; more communication between brands and supply side, creation of a decentralized B2B inventory tagging system and marketplace, and why we need to diversify away from China now. In late December 2020, Team PricePlow connected to record our 2020 Supplement Industry Awards. You can listen to a one long podcast (subscribe to the PricePlow Podcast using the links below) or watch each separate video on YouTube below. Enjoy and congratulations to all companies that were discussed! 2020 Supplement Industry Recap It goes without saying that 2020 was a wild year. But what did that mean for the supplement industry? What brands (and stores) were best-positioned, and which ones weren't? Before getting into specific awards, Team PricePlow discusses the year at large in their 2020 supplement industry recap video below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEXV0M4RS8E 2020 Brand of the Year: Ghost This year, there really wasn't much of an argument. One brand stood above all others in terms of impact on the industry, with a ton of extremely strong product and flavor launches on a consistent basis. That brand was GHOST Lifestyle. With everything ranging from incredibly-formulated skin care support (Ghost Glow) to multivitamins (Ghost Multi) and greens (Ghost Greens) to incredible Ghost Whey protein flavors (and even their High Protein Hot Cocoa Mix) to energy drinks (Ghost Energy) and a gaming supplement (Ghost Gamer), this brand really came of age in 2020. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbHXAbccRSw Ghost was the topic of conversation with nearly every other brand, and they were clearly ready to run the table, regardless of whatever else happened in 2020. At this clip, expect the same, if not more, in 2021. In terms of the competition, we loved NutraBio's community outreach with their First Response initiative, and one thing we realized over the course of the rest of our filming was that CORE Nutritionals made a solid case for themselves as well, as did the brand discussed next: 2020 Breakout Brand of the Year: Glaxon At the end of 2019, we said that Glaxon would be the “Brand to Watch in 2020” (YouTube video here), and that was right on the money. Simply put, the “Goons” broke out. A brand that made some noise at the end of 2019 with a very hard-hitting Specimen pre workout started making waves in the retail scene, and it was clear they were on to something. They were putting out strong and very uniquely formulated supplements that simply kicked. And it only got better over the course of the year, as you can see on our Glaxon News page. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TI5YZMOTEo Other potentials were the… ... Read more on the PricePlow Blog

Many consumers quickly glance at the label on a dietary supplement, blindly purchase it, and never question where it was made or if whatâs listed on the label is actually in the bottle. But what if you donât even know what youâre buying? Has the product been tested to meet label claims, where is it manufactured, and how pure really is it? Regardless of the myths that surround the supplement industry of ânot being regulated by the FDAâ, this news story will change your mind. Because this one involves a serious indictment after plenty of warning letters, strikes, and failed audits. FDA indicts major contract manufacturer in ABH Pharma After years of playing “whack-a-mole” by sending warning letters to small brands, the FDA — and now the Department of Justice — have gone after the root of the supplement industry's biggest problem: underhanded contract manufacturers. These are the companies that are actually bottling the products, and we have long stated that they are a better “pinch point” for strict enforcement of current Good Manufacturing Practices. On January 17th, 2020, a major contract supplement manufacturer under the names of ABH Pharma, ABH Natureâs Products, and Stocknutra.com published a press release on BusinessWire issuing a nationwide recall on all lots of dietary supplements manufactured and sold between January 2013 â November 2019, after an indictment was posted in New York on December 26, 2019. Major offenses over several years The DOJ indictment, which names Mohammed Jahirul Islam (âIslamâ) as the owner of the three companies, alleges that their facilities distributed adulterated and misbranded dietary supplements and unapproved and misbranded drugs. They signed a consent decree forcing Islam to destroy all dietary supplements (and drugs) in their possession within 15 days, which has now also been posted on the FDA's website. The DOJ indictment report stated that ABH failed 6 FDA audits over the years, had warning letters dating back to 2012, and neglected to conduct at least one appropriate test for ingredient identity. The indictment itself (which is linked at the bottom of the DOJ's report web page) includes new infractions from a November 2018 inspection. Such infractions include some egregious drug claims made on products they manufactured, such as “Whey protein in the form of protein powder can help in reducing the symptoms associated with anxiety and depression”. In addition, ABH Nature's products had a voluntary recall in June 2017 and January 2018 due to possible salmonella contamination. âAs demonstrated by the consent decree, this Office and the FDA will work tirelessly to protect consumers who take dietary supplements, ensuring that manufacturers comply with good manufacturing practices and do not distribute unapproved and misbranded drugs in violation of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.” — Richard P. Donoghue, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York A long time coming The indictment lists several inspections at the Defendants' Edgewood, NY facility, including inspections that occurred in or about July 2012, May 2013, August 2013, November 2016, and February 2018, on top of the most recent November 2018 inspection. The FDA's warning letter from 2012 lists seven major cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) violations, such as adulteration, mislabeling, misbranding, failure to verify finished supplements, failure t... TIP: Supplements There may be no bigger taboo topic among fitness professionals than that of supplementation. So, in full disclosure, I am pro-supplements, so long as they are used as true supplements, and not leaned on entirely for results. Here are supplements I use every day and why: Protein. I find it difficult to get all the protein my body needs to grow muscle in my 40s from plate food, alone, so I use NutraBio’s Whey Protein 100% Isolate (vanilla) to give myself protein throughout the day. It’s a great on-the-go tool too. L-Carnitine Tartate. Carnitine is an amino acid that does a lot of amazing things, but the tartate form helps the body tap into stored body fats and use them for energy, rather than immediately available sugars from recently eaten carbs or sugars. Green Tea Extract. There are a ton of benefits to green tea, but in its extract form, I use it for giving my metabolism a spike and also staving off hunger. There are a lot more benefits to green tea extract, but this is what I find useful. BCAAs. Brand Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) are used in the construction of protein, and when consumed orally, they can help the body keep muscle intact during a period of time when we are intentionally losing weight but wanting to keep our hard-earned muscle. BCAAs come in some very tasty drink forms these days, so they are also delicious to drink! Vitamins and minerals. These changes throughout the year, but my staples are zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin C. Sometimes I add in Chromium for blood sugar control, especially during the Christmas goodies time of year, but the others mentioned are primarily for my immune system and cell health.
In May of 2018, Mike and Mark Glazier talked about Mark's recent trip to Washington D.C. (posted here on Mark's Facebook and embedded below), where the NutraBio founder and CEO was lobbying for better protein labeling laws. Mark explains some of the issues he commonly sees, and while we believe that customer education is the best way to go, there are many things that could be done from the top down view that could certainly help keep the bad actors from scamming and winning lawsuits, especially in the case of protein amino acid spiking. The conversation on the YouTube comments below are interesting, with many not wanting more regulation. Mark typically agrees, but he also knows the loopholes in the current laws, and would like to see them patched up for the industry. Note: This page and audio feed was published on July 29, 2019, 1.5 years after the interview. The biggest change here is that Ben Kane is now with Team PricePlow! In March of 2018, everyone in the sports nutrition industry descended upon beautiful Columbus, OH, and we got together with Team NutraBio, who was launching their Natural Series of sports supplements, which included NutraBio Natural Pre Workout and NutraBio Natural Intra Blast! This was a super fun, relaxed conversation that was done in the hotel lobby, so there will be some background noise, but the discussion on beta alanine definitely gets wild and fun. Note: This page and audio feed was published on July 10, 2019, nearly three years after the interviews. They are still relevant to this day, although the plant tour videos will be out of date as NutraBio is constantly expanding their operations. In November 2016, I flew out to New Jersey to see NutraBio‘s world headquarters to spend the day with Mark Glazier and learn about The NutraBio Story. We discuss several topics shown in the videos below. They mostly revolve around the FDA's supplement industry regulations, Mark's creation of the NutraBio company and brand, and how he complies with the letter of the law. I also get a plant tour, which is omitted from the audio feeds, but note that those videos are now out of date since NutraBio has scaled operations up. Some videos from this trip were never published, but it was time to move this to the audio feed anyway. It's also time to get another trip up to New Jersey, as the brand has grown leaps and bounds since then! MAJOR UPDATE: This lawsuit was settled at the end of May 2017, and Jim Stoppani is coming back to Bodybuilding.com to produce content — although it seems like JYM products will remain available at Amazon and GNC. We'll update with more details when available. If you thought the ongoing Jim Stoppani Scandal couldn't get any crazier, then think again. On June 22, 2016, Bodybuilding.com filed a lawsuit against Jim Stoppani and PhD Fitness LLC! While this has nothing to do with the aforementioned scandal involving PRO Jym, NutraBio, and other companies affected by Stoppani's recent claims on YouTube, the timing is rather interesting. Click here to download the original complaint filed by Bodybuilding.com Click here to see the amended complaint that also includes the $100,000,000 claims against GNC Three updated videos to watch: Don't feel like reading legal documents? Mark Glazier founded NutraBio Labs in 1996. Since the day he opened a “No Compromise” commitment to producing the most effective pharmaceutical grade supplements has been a priority. NutraBio started out like every other supplement brand, trusting contract manufacturers to produce their products. The first few years were a real education as Mark learned the gimmicks and scams the industry used to hype products and rip-off consumers. By 2002 Mark realized it was time for dramatic change. He started by firing his contract manufacturers and taking immediate control of quality by switching to manufacturing my own supplements. Mark is proud to say that NutraBio now manufactures their own products in their FDA registered and 21 CFR Part 111 regulated and inspected GMP facility in New Jersey. Mark banned the use of proprietary blends on NutraBio labels and committed to giving his customers full label disclosure, listing every single ingredient and dosage. He committed to formulas using only full therapeutic doses of all active ingredients. Mark banned all fillers and additives from NutraBio supplements and developed new processes for the manufacturing of capsules without excipients. Positive change has started in the sports supplement industry as the concept of removing proprietary blends and additives is now becoming popular marketing buzz. After so many years, Mark admits it is nice to see that other brands are following NutraBio’s lead. The SMARTER Team Training Audio Interview Series has been developed to share insights from some of the best in the industry.
