PRETTY AS A PICARESQUE: Join me and filmmaker Steve Herold (Death of an Umbrella Salesman, Walmea) while we talk two films inspired by Voltaire's Candide, The Jerk and O Lucky Man! “I was born a poor black child”: It's a tale as old as the Spanish Golden Age and made perhaps most famous in the west by Voltaire's Candide. Take a somewhat naïve innocent, usually of lower social class, thrust him out in the world, and have him navigate the slings and arrows he encounters, trying to survive in an essentially corrupt society. Or as I call it, Episode 80 of Pop Art, where I and my guest find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. For this episode, I am happy to welcome as my guest, filmmaker Steve Herold, who has chosen as his film the Steve Martin vehicle, Carl Reiner's The Jerk, while I have chosen Lindsay Anderson's cult favorite, O Lucky Man!, both picaresque films with a naïve innocent having to go out on his own to discover the world. And in this episode we answer such questions as: Quentin Tarantino's The Jerk? Reactive, active or passive? What is white male protestant comedy? What are the problematic aspects of both films? How does Stanley Kubrick fit in? How many slaps did McDowell endure in the final scene? What is Steve Martin's favorite line? What is the French title of O Lucky Man!? Where was Hartounian's gas station located? How does Star Wars fit in and what does it have to do with Pig Man? Where does Rob Reiner appear in the film? And don't forget to check out Steve Herold and his films. His IMDB page is at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003750/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0#director Hs film Death of an Umbrella Salesman can be found on Amazon Prime and his newest film Walmea is making the festival rounds. Those intrepid weirdos we call the Dom Deluise Club have done it yet again. And by 'it', we mean they've picked three very different cult flicks for us to review, as is their monthly ritual. Up first! It's Delinquent Girl Boss: Tokyo Drifters, one of them sleazy pinky violence flicks from Japan (via patreon pal Steve M), coming early in the genre's history with its 1970 release date. In fact, it just might be the earliest movie we've seen in which bare boobs are deployed as a mid-fight distraction tactic. Next up! Oh no, a 3-hour British flick? O! Lucky Man (from 1973 & picked by Justin D) seems like a surefire way to piss off at least two of your three charming JFD hosts. But can the presence of Malcolm McDowell alleviate the misery? The only way to know is to listen (or check the replay on the evening news). Finally! Of course, it's 1983's The Man with Two Brains, our long-awaited dissection of this important entry in the series of films Carl Reiner made with Steve Martin. And since it's got both boobs and brains, how the hell did it take all three of us this long to finally see it? (picked by Ricky O) All this plus strugglin' with Skype, Parker's Wynorski binge, the brittle bones of a 70-year old Gene Kelly, surprising physical media news, the Dinklage Report co-starring Sean, no junkmails, Kevin picks his "trash-art beserker" of the week, boobies floppin' everywhere, nerd news and even more! BriouxTV: The Podcast

Malcolm McDowell has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Growing up in Liverpool in the early ‘60s, he took his girlfriend to see The “Silver” Beatles at the Cavern Club. By the end of the decade, he was one of the beautiful people swingin' through London as the star of Lindsay Anderson's “If….” and "O Lucky Man." In 1971, he drew raves for his electric performance in Stanley Kubrick's “A Clockwork Orange.”Fifty years later, he feels like a "Lucky Man" all over again for landing in Canada on CBC's breakout comedy hit, “Son of a Critch.”McDowell loved shooting in Newfoundland and immediately bonded with his young British co-star, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth.  He praises the scripts along with the book the series was spun off from: Mark Critch's memoir about growing up eccentric on Canada's East Coast. And what a life he has led in-between. Listen as McDowell tells story after story about the famous stage and film folk he has known, including three Sirs:  Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson and John Guilgud. Other names dropped include Peter Sellers, Robert Altman, Robert Mitchum, Michael Caine and George Harrison. At 78, he's never been busier, having just finished shooting a movie with two actors he adores: Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. He's got stories about them, too. This is a podcast you don't want to miss.

Few performances on the big screen are as memorable as Malcolm McDowell's portrayal of ultraviolent Alex, who terrorizes the night with his Droogs. The film catapulted McDowell to international stardom and firmly entrenched Stanley Kubrick in the pantheon of world's most interesting and innovative directors. An endless repository of fascinating stories, we learn from Malcolm about the serendipitous collaborations that made the film come alive, the futuristic design and eccentric costumes that brought sharp relief to the movie's dystopian message. Malcolm also says that what made Alex such a compelling villain was "his joie de vivre. He really enjoyed life." McDowell also talks about how the fascist subtext and corrupt authorities make the film seem so timeless, and how after a half century it speaks so directly to our present moment. Besides gem-like observations about working so closely with Kubrick, a director known to be difficult with actors, we also spend a fair bit of time talking about director Lindsay Anderson, "If," and "O Lucky Man." Anderson was a director known to be fond of his actors, so the contrast gave the young actor the resiliency and durability for which he is justly famous. We also talk about current projects of McDowell's, his case of Covid, living in Ojai and Kubrick's "Napoleon," known as the "Greatest Movie Never Made." We did not talk about McDowell's passion for golf, blood diamonds or Rupert Murdoch.

Career Q&A with Malcolm McDowell, starring on Amazon's Mozart in the Jungle, on May 10, 2017. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Malcolm McDowell has created a gallery of iconic characters since catapulting to the screen as Mick Travis, the rebellious upperclassman in Lindsay Anderson’s prize-winning sensation, If... His place in movie history was subsequently secured when Stanley Kubrick found the actor he was searching for to play the gleefully amoral Alex in A Clockwork Orange; when McDowell himself conceived the idea for Mick Travis’ further adventures in Anderson’s Candide-like masterpiece, O Lucky Man!; and when he wooed Mary Steenburgen and defeated Jack the Ripper as the romantically inquisitive H.G. Wells in Time After Time. For his motion picture work, the American Cinematheque honored him with a retrospective in June 2001, highlighted by showings of his electrifying performances in two major works. The first is Paul McGuigan’s Gangster No. 1, in which McDowell and Paul Bettany portray the consumed, driven title character and which affords McDowell the chance to create a character both on screen and through nuanced voice-over. The second is Russian director Karen Shakhnazarov’s acclaimed and rarely seen Assassin of the Tsar, which Vincent Canby called “a remarkable mystical and psychological exploration of the murder of the Romanov family.” McDowell’s distinctive motion picture characterizations include: Richard Lester’s Royal Flash, Paul Schrader’s Cat People, Rachel Talalay’s Tank Girl, Joseph Losey’s Figures in a Landscape, Bryan Forbes’ The Raging Moon and the Chaplinesque studio boss in Blake Edwards’ Sunset. His film credits are further highlighted by his compellingly sinister Caligula; the brilliant literary editor Maxwell Perkins in Martin Ritt’s Cross Creek; his cameo in Robert Altman’s The Player; and his final incarnation of Mick Travis in Britannia Hospital, the third film in Anderson’s trilogy marking the disintegration of British culture. McDowell’s film work also includes Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius, In Good Company, I Spy, Robert Altman’s The Company, Robert Downey Sr.’s Hugo Pool with Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr. and Cathy Moriarty; Just Visiting, Mr. Magoo, Hugh Hudson’s My Life So Far, BlueThunder, Neil Marshall’s Doomsday in 2007, Rob Zombie’s Halloween I & II, and the voice of villain Dr. Calico in Disney’s 2008 boxoffice hit, Bolt. In late 2011, McDowell was seen in the Academy Award-winning silent film sensation, The Artist. In addition to recurring appearances on Heroes, CSI: Miami, and The Mentalist, McDowell starred in TNT’s Franklin & Bash as Stanton Infeld. The series lasted for four seasons.

Russ and Zach make a trip to the cinema for Sorry To Bother You, the first feature film from Boots Riley, who pretty clearly stands out as a Talent You Should Be Watching. We talk a lot about film theory, about the importance of indepdendent cinema, and other theoretical and quasi-academic stuff that we don't get into with most of the big blockbusters and schlock horror movies we watch. But fear not: we find a way to tie it back to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. For those of you relatively new to the show, the New Release Wall episodes differ from other episodes in one important way: we are talking about a new-in-theaters or BRAND-new-to-video movie, which typically means we do no (or at least minimal) spoilers and there is no second film discussed in the episode. This time around, though, there are a few particular films (O Lucky Man and Idiocracy, for instance) that come up again and again. Ladybird, The Florida Project, Easy, Mother!, Judex, The Boxtrolls, If…, Alan Price, Greta Gerwig, Whiplash, the aspect ratio set wrong, If…, movies should be more like American short stories, Patton Oswalt, Holy Mountain, it’s a wonder my wife hasn’t murdered me, Brooklyn, trash on the streets, majestic feel… picaresque quality, trying to interpret a dream, the word spiffy…, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, after we won the grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Robert McKee, it’s creating this unnatural look, Jerry Maguire kicked you right out, so personal and so dense, Putney Swope, Ghost World, fictional brothers, a city of zero waste people, Voltaire's Candide… Heaven is my Destination by Thornton Wilder and Kafka's Amerika, I Heart Huckabees, I feel like he ruined a whole generation of screenwriters, it’s a spectrum of guys, it’s sort of that first short story everybody writes, the It Follows toothpaste, Willem Dafoe, people used to say my name with three syllables, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, taking on different aspects of things he’s shoved into, Peter Greenaway, just a voyeur, The President's Analyst, a blunt-faced British guy… with wry expressions, Terry Gilliam, stylistic for the sake of it, Philip Stone, the role of you, Mike Birbiglia did that one time at a La Quinta hotel, he was teaching ballroom dance to dwarf inner city kids, you’re not lost in the dream of it, Monty Python films, this weird hierarchy of society based on the color hat you wear… and cheese tasting, it’s almost like too much my kind of thing… for me, he’s like the human sloth, Ramsay Bolton, a passive observer, a half-human half-pig… dinosaur, the old American hobo symbol for crazy kids, encoded meaning, our day-to-day lives are just filled with absurdity, Warren Clarke, I had lots of strange things going through my mind, seeing a different perception, Don’t Look Back, it’s a document of the process of making a movie, Ken Russell, what a weird world, you can have tea but you’ve gotta pay me for the biscuits, the gold shiny suit and post-apocalyptic world, after my break-up with the movies, getting performances out of non-actors, his voice always reminds me of wearing a shirt that’s just slightly too small, Never Apologize, a totem for you to react through, are pigs just fleshy dinosaurs, we are very fortunate, detritus, Brechtian artifice and alternate egos. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for the 1973 film O Lucky Man!, so watch it before you listen. “…that scene, that and a couple of others, you just stop and you’re like - ‘What the hell am I watching? Like this is… so bizarre.' "

When reality comes crashing in to call, you've got to be prepared for a re-think. It's what happens to 'Billy Liar', in another dazzling English rose, the movie "Billy Liar" from 1963. It's based on a novel then a play, but the visuals bring it home. A man of 19, who flees from his life, for his life, into a fantasy world, begins to falter, then crumble, in the face of reality. (O Lucky Man! -- at age 19, to begin to see.) Like the English city in which he lives, in which every building seems to be being bulldozed in service of urban renewal, 'Billy Fisher' -- Billy Liar -- is watching "everything go". "Not one stone" (of his plummeting life) "will be left on stone". There's help, however, in the form of a girl, a precious girl, who is able to care and not care. She's the hope! She knows something Billy doesn't, and few do. Can she save our phantastic hero? Could she save you? Listen to "Twisterella". Or rather, see "Billy Liar", and SEE.
