The New York Yankees take two from the Boston Red Sox in a doubleheader sweep at Fenway Park! In the first game, the Yankees came back to take the lead and hold on in the bottom of the ninth, even after Clay Holmes walked the bases loaded with only one out. Thankfully, Alex Verdugo swung at the first pitch, Gleyber Torres turned a great double play, and the Yankees prevailed. In Game Two, Carlos Rodon rebounded from a lead-off home run in the first inning to keep Boston to that one run in five innings with nine strikeouts. Estevan Florial tied the game, and the Yankees added insurance runs in the top of the ninth to secure the sweep. They're now tied with Boston at 73-72 with two more games to play in this series. We take a look at Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Japanese righty Brian Cahsman was scouting this past week who threw a no-hitter for the Orix Buffaloes in front of Cashman, Omar Minaya, and other MLB executives. We talk about Yamamoto's pitching arsenal (he has a splitter!) and discuss what he has that the Yankees need. Then we preview the third game of the series and talk about Clarke Schmidt, who is making the start on Wednesday. He has three starts left in 2023. Is Schmidt guaranteed a spot in the 2024 rotation? We discuss. In this episode, we look at the early days of Omar Minaya's career, including becoming the first ever Hispanic General Manager in MLB history. We explore some of his notable signings, trades, and early challenges all the way through the end of the '08 season. Bonus commentary as the duo starts the podcast recapping the busy week that was in Mets Land, including the beef between Uncle Stevie and Barstool, Daniel Murphy's retirement and yes, the return of Omar Minaya to the NY Mets! #LGM

In this episode, Manny and Luis talk New York sports. Is Steve Cohen the new George Steinbrenner? Will the Yankees make any more moves this offseason? We cover these topics and more! Also, Manny sits down with former New York Mets GM Omar Minaya to discuss his journey from the Dominican Republic to the longest-serving minority executive in MLB.
The Cohen deal is finally official and no less than 2 hours later Uncle Stevie had himself a Red Wedding. No one in baseball ops was left standing. Brodie and his brain trust of Baird, Guttridge and Banner were all sent packing along with our sweet Omar Minaya. In one foul swoop Sandy and Stevie let the entire baseball world know that they're here and they mean business. The guys breakdown who could be filling the roles, what moves we hope for in free agency, how Uncle Stevie is changing the culture and involving fans and our big ideas for the future. Baseball is truly fun for the first time in our Mets lives and we're like kids on Christmas. No name too big and no ideas too expensive or outlandish. We have finally reached Cohen's kingdom and the opportunities are endless! This offseason will be one for the record books and we gotta believe when we take the field in 2021 that everyone will be wishing they were the New York Mets.
Then-Mets general manager Omar Minaya appeared on "Mike and the Mad Dog" on Jan. 25, 2006, just as the back pages were accusing him of showing preference toward signing Latino players. “I understand when you’re the first Hispanic general manager, there are going to be people that are going to look at everything that you do and try to analyze it or try to say, ‘He’s doing this because of that,'” Minaya said. “The fact is growing up in New York City, I never think about race. “The New York Mets, what we’re trying to do as an organization is put the best team on the field.”
Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past. Coming off a season a bit like 2019, with a promising young core that threatened but missed the playoffs, Omar Minaya entered the 2005 offseason intent on bolstering one of that season’s great weaknesses—the bullpen. Along with signing closer Billy Wagner, Minaya engineered a trade for promising Dodgers set-up man Duaner Sanchez. The righthander was dynamic in the eighth inning, providing a stabilizing bullpen presence for a team cruising to the 2006 National League Eastern Division title. Until a fateful cab ride in Florida just prior to the deadline in July 2006 derailed Sanchez’s career—and one can only wonder how it altered the course of the Mets’ 2006 postseason. As always, you can listen or subscribe to this and all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. The hot topic of conversation on the "Mike and the Mad Dog" show on Oct. 20, 2006, was the Mets’ heartbreaking loss the night before to the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series. The Cardinals took the seven-game series and went on to win the World Series. Mike Francesa and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo opened their show by breaking down Game 7. Then-Mets general manager Omar Minaya called in to discuss the tough loss. Of course, Mets fans were devastated, none more than “Mr. Met,” WFAN sports anchor Bob Heussler, whom Mike and Chris treated with much compassion. Or maybe they weren’t really that compassionate and tried to needle him about the loss. You decide.
Mike Silva is joined by Joe Demayo of SNY to recap the Mets exciting draft haul. The guys discuss potential draft sleepers, the development of top prospect Anthony Kay, and some bullpen arms in the system that may be able to help the Mets contend this year. Mike praises Brodie Van Wagenen’s “home run” mentality and compares it to the early years of Omar Minaya.
In talks with a variety of MLB insiders, here's what I've learned about how other front office's view the Mets co-GMs John Ricco, Omar Minaya and JP Ricciardi.

Then in the mailbag, the two are asked if the Winter Classic will be the best game at Citi Field all season (01:03:08), if Brandon Nimmo is ready for a breakout year and if Juan Lagares should be dealt (01:07:20), the chances of Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom staying healthy all next year (01:16:00), if Dominic Smith will be the starting first baseman (01:20:00), which Met is each Star Wars movie (01:31:00), and more. Just when you thought the Mets were pulling everyone back "in" with winning 6 of 7, they throw up a stinker against the Phillies. Mike Silva questions whether he should change his stance and consider the Mets a “real” Wild Card contender. Is this just a fake pennant race? Sandy Alderson was brought on in 2010 to rebuild the farm system and create a sustainable winning environment. Many credited Omar Minaya for building the core of the 2015 World Series team. It’s now time to see if Alderson signees such as Gsellman, Montero and Lugo can lift the team when they need it. Hear Mike talk about this and how tomorrows start is really Rafael Montero’s last chance at redemption in a Mets uniform. Finally, he discusses David Cone’s comments to Keith Hernandez about how rest helped him during his playing days and whether deGrom, Syndagaard and Matz can get a bump from this for the final six weeks of the season. Hear these topics and others during tonight’s Talkin’ Mets podcast, which also features a guest appearance by Tim Donner of Metsmerizedonline.com

Alex plays his conversation with Steve Goldman of "The Baseball Prospectus." Alex and Steve dissect the upcoming MLB postseason. How do the Yankees of 2010 compare to the Yankees of 2009? How do the Rays look? Are the Phillies the favorite in the National League? Alex also gives his thoughts on the final weekend of the regular season and the games against the Yankees. Will this be the last time we see Tim Wakefield and Jason Varitek in Red Sox' uniforms? "Mike Lowell Day," Adrian Beltre's future, and much more is brought up as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex continues to preview the playoffs and also talks about both Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya getting dismissed by the Mets. Post on the boards (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards). "Without a Curse" is published once per week throughout the offseason (every Monday). "The Alex Reimer Show" airs Saturday from 4-6 PM EST on 1120 AM WBNW Boston, www.moneymattersradio.net, and www.livestream.com/wbnw1120.
The Mets are not going to make the playoffs this year, but Omar Minaya will probably trade young talent for mercenary veterans anyway, destroying next year’s team in the process. Mets fans watch this happen year after year, while the team continues to neglect their long-standing starting pitching problem (and last-ditch mid-season moves cannot solve a problem this deep).
Alex gives his take on the Red Sox's latest woes, and states that the offense has contributed as of late. It's the pitching staff, more specifically, the back-end of the rotation, that is to blame. Alex also says that a compromise should be reached in regards to Daisuke Matsuzaka's conditioning program, and not to expect a big deal for a bat, because this offense has been fine as of late. And it will especially be fine if Jason Bay ever starts hitting. The biggest problem the past few weeks has been the starting rotation, and the strange events which took place at the end of Tuesday's game. Alex hands out the "post of the day," and goes "Around the League," by praising the Yankees' great play, but also by saying that the Yankees will not continue to be this good. Alex says that Pete Rose should undoubtedly be in the Hall of Fame, rants on Omar Minaya for his embarassing press conference regarding an embarrassing situation, and runs down the recent deadline trades, including the Cliff Lee deal. And yes, it's good to see that the Pirates remain busy! Just wake Alex up when the deadline is over, and the Roy Halladay rumors have stopped... Thanks for listening and participating! Remember, tune into the "Alex Reimer Show" every Saturday from 4-5 PM EST on 1120 AM WBNW Boston (www.wbnw1120.com).
Alex recaps the first two of three games against the dreadful Nationals, and talks about why Jason Bay needs a contract extension, and why the Red Sox have a tremendous opportunity to expand their lead on a mediocre AL East. Alex also hands out the "post of the day," and goes "Around the League," while ranting on the directionless Yankees, and the failure's of Omar Minaya in yet again building depth around the Mets. Alex also weighs in on Donald Fehr's legacy, and why though steroids are certainly a part of that legacy, it should not be all that people remember Fehr and Bud Selig by, as baseball has grown to tremendous heights in recent years. Post on the boards at, www.thesportspodcasters.com/boards!
