This week, I'm revisiting a recent episode and announcing a new project. A Bookish's Home new Substack Newsletter launched this week. If your favorite way to discover new books is hearing from the authors themselves (and you're short on time!) this newsletter is for you. The first edition is On Writing and Resistance: An Interview with Author Maria van Lieshout. This week on the podcast we're also revisiting one of my favorite episodes of the year with bestselling author Marjan Kamali in which we discussed The Lion Women of Tehran, a heartfelt, epic new novel of friendship, betrayal, and redemption set against three transformative decades in Iran. For folks in the New England area, Marjan will be appearing at the upcoming Newburyport Literary Festival on Saturday, April 26th in this event: On Friendship and Freedom: Marjan Kamali in Conversation With Jenna Blum
New Episode: The Power of Friendship In this episode, I read On Friendship by Khalil Gibran and sit down with my friend Sarah Daniels for a heartfelt conversation about what it truly means to be a friend. We explore the importance of boundaries in friendships, the value of being our own best friend, and how cultivating a strong relationship with ourselves allows us to build deeper, more meaningful connections with others. Friendship is not just about companionship—it's about growth, healing, and becoming the best versions of ourselves. Listen in as we share insights, stories, and reflections on the role of friendship in our lives. And a youth said, Speak to us of Friendship. And he answered, saying: Your friend is your needs answered. He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving. And he is your board and your fireside. For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the “nay” in your own mind, nor do you withhold the “ay.” And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart; For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed. When you part from your friend, you grieve not; For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain. And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit. For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught. And let your best be for your friend. If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also. For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill? Seek him always with hours to live. For it is his to fill your need but not your emptiness. And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the episode including thoughts on the poetry and the topics that were discussed. You can email me at poetdelayed@gmail.com. Why Cicero Matters (Bloomsbury, 2023) shows us how the Roman philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius, better known as Cicero, can help realize a new political world. His impact on humanitarianism, the Enlightenment and the Founding Fathers of America is immense. Yet we give Julius Caesar all our attention. Why? What does this say about modern politics and political culture? This book gives us Cicero as an antidote to the myth of the strong man of history. Reading Cicero's On Duties alongside two more introspective philosophical texts, On Friendship and On Old Age, we see how Cicero turned politics into a higher, intellectual form of art, believing in education, in culture and above all in the power of philosophy to instil morality. Cicero has reassuring words on the indispensable work philosophers make, and why the common good needs philosophy. In an age when anti-intellectualism runs rampant, Why Cicero Matters introduces us to an ancient thinker who argues culture is, or ought to be, the foundation of any modern democracy, and books its building blocks. Vittorio Bufacchi is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at University College Cork, Ireland. He works in moral and political philosophy. He is the author of Violence and Social Justice (2007); Social Injustice (2012); and Everything Must Change: Philosophical Lessons From Lockdown (2021). There's nothing better or more important in life than a good friend. For Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero, the emphasis was on “good.” Cicero lived through the assassination of Caesar, one of the most famous examples of betrayal between friends in history. But according to Cicero's treatise On Friendship, you must be virtuous to be a good friend, and, he argues, bad people cannot really be friends. In this text, Cicero examines true friendship, tough love, social transaction, and affection. Professor Katharina Volk of Columbia University discusses the role of friendship in ancient Rome and how this text in particular has kept Latin alive. Welcome to the return of Indivisible! We are rebranded with a primary focus on crypto markets as the ultimate intersection of technology, creativity and freedom. To kick things off, this episode features a wide-ranging conversation with NFT collector, industry veteran and cryptopunk @TappySF. Tappy has been into crypto and NFTs since the beginning. He is involved in many top digital avatar collections and the world of 1/1 digital art. If all of this sounds foreign to you, don't worry, we'll be breaking it down to market fundamentals. And if you're a veteran, we'll also be diving in deep. We explore concepts ranging from greed to trust, pseudonymity, provenance, IP rights, managing volatility and the relationships that fuel the journey. Consider this a high-level NFT primer that covers philosophy alongside brass tacks and harsh truths when it comes to avoiding traps and making profit.I believe there is a unique place for each individual to realize identity and creative power in NFTs. Built into the foundation of profit, is possibility. Wherever you come from, NFTs offer an opportunity to let go of the siloed self. They are a point of fusion that allow us to exist at once as our multi-dimensional selves, anchored in the quantum convictions of the things that inspire us the most. Crypto rewards the doers, and Tappy shares his hard-won lessons from playing the game. I hope it inspires you to play yours. xA Timeline: 1:50 -Episode Intro3:30 - Tappy's Introduction to Crypto & NFTs6:08 - Short History of CryptoPunks and Birth of ERC-721 7:51 - Tappy's Early Journey11:10 - Managing Market Volatility14:14 - Evolution of the Industry and Market Dynamics: Aesthetics, Community & Profit 17:01 - Greed and Vibes19:42 - On Friendship and Mentorship, ft. @Anonymoux25:30 - Pseudonymity and Privacy 29:53 - Market Fundamentals and Trading Strategies33:00 - The Game of 1/1s & a Love of Art36:40 - Provenance & IP - Punks, Apes & Toadz46:05 - Bullet Points on What Makes a Blue Chip 50:41 - Leaders and Followers

There’s nothing better or more important in life than a good friend. For Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero, the emphasis was on “good.” Cicero lived through the assassination of Caesar, one of the most famous examples of betrayal between friends in history. But according to Cicero’s treatise On Friendship, you must be virtuous to be a good friend, and, he argues, bad people cannot really be friends. In this text, Cicero examines true friendship, tough love, social transaction, and affection. Professor Katharina Volk of Columbia University discusses the role of friendship in ancient Rome and how this text in particular has kept Latin alive. This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero's work, On Friendship Specifically it examines his discussion of a position on friendship that views it as unnecessary and even detrimental for the good life, the idea being that friendship requires us to care for others and to be involved in their affairs, whereas genuine happiness would be freedom from care and troubles. In this episode, I read "On Friendship" by Kahlil Gibran. This is from his 1923 book "The Prophet" which has been translated into a 100 languages and is now available in the public domain. It's a book of prose poetry and this verse today is a response to the question "What is friendship?" I find it reassuring that no matter how much the world changes things like love, friendship, kindness, goodness of heart, desire, envy - these things that make us human stay the same. This here about friendship, and the rest some other time. Listen in! Monday Night Philosophy warms you up for the holidays with Michel de Montaigne's essay "On Friendship," one of the most influential and insightful meditations on the topic ever written. Montaigne shows us how our attitudes toward friendship are deeply constitutive of both our emotional life and our moral being. Together we will discuss the themes raised by Montaigne and their implications for thinking about communal life, both during Montaigne's age and in the present moment. Here’s a weird one! The friends discuss Michel de Montaigne, the 16th century philosopher who had a thing or two to say about friendship. Some of it you will hate. It eventually devolves into an extended, uncomfortable discussion of male and female friendships. Subscribe on iTunes!
