This week, Jason Kander is joined by Paul Rieckhoff, founder and executive director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, who is subbing in as host while Ravi travels, to break down Trump's disastrous speech in front of military generals after Pete Hegseth's “Warrior Ethos” address at Quantico, where senior commanders were summoned from across the world and greeted the remarks with stone-cold silence. They analyze Hegseth's social-media boast—“Today, we end the War on Warriors”—the awkward pauses when he expected applause, and the eerie lack of reaction from those in attendance. Kander and Rieckhoff also dive into Trump's rambling, partisan remarks that were wholly inappropriate for a military audience — including his calls to prepare military leadership to accept the use of combat troops against American citizens — and the deep questions that raises about civil-military norms. Plus, they explain the fallout from the government shutdown that began at midnight, which agencies remain open for essential functions, the White House's warning to agencies to prepare for mass firings, and what that uncertainty could mean for ordinary people. We've got another great episode with a returning guest. And another big screw up by a returning screw up. That's right, the Hegseth hits keep coming and at this point it's a little hard to tell which one is the worst. From Signalgate to the briefing of Elon on our China war plans (remember that one?!) to a latest Signal chat group which includes his wife in briefings of the most top secret nature possible. It's another day, another fiasco for the world's worst SECDEF. Trump's first hundred days have seen countless terrible days for Pete Hegseth. And therefore, for all of us.  And Paul's gonna take you on a walk through midtown Manhattan and into Central Park on a beautiful spring evening to tear into all of. Including the latest on Ukraine, why the DOJ is being weaponized in a whole new way, why Saquon Barkley is off our Christmas card list and why conspiracy peddling Laura Loomer decided to attack Paul on Twitter/X/Elon's demented digital playpen.  And we've got a fantastic returning guest to break it all down. The vigilant reporter that's tracking all scandals down for the Washington Post. Dan Lamothe (@DanLamothe) is back and he's one of the best military and Pentagon reporters in America. He has written about the US Armed Forces for more than a decade, traveling extensively, embedding with each service, and covering combat in Afghanistan numerous times. He's the real deal and if you've heard him on the show before you know why we're always so happy to have him back on. Nobody stays on top of all things military more than Dan and you can only go this deep with a host with the chops to dig into all of it. Every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories–and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's content for the 49% of Americans that proudly call themselves independent. Always with a unique focus on national security, foreign affairs and military and veterans issues. Independent content for independent Americans. The podcast that helps you stay ahead of the curve–and stay vigilant.  Past appearances by Dan Lamothe: Episode 96, Episode 154, Episode 185, Episode 206, Episode 245 and Episode 318. Spring is here and we're two months in. Two months of crazy. Two months of furor. Two months of chaos. And two months of damage done to the fabric of the country we all love. And just two days after Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff went on CNN to sound the alarm bell and warn that the sloppiness would lead to much, much worse… worse happened. By now you've heard about Signalgate, the scandal that has rocked the Trump administration and includes the DNI, SECDEF and Director of the CIA as well as the Vice President and others exchanging sensitive details about a pending strike on Houthi forces in Yemen. It's a shocking lack of discipline and operational security and the country has taken notice. Big time. And in this pod, we've got a guest who is right in the middle of it all. A guest who came directly from a SCIF to do this interview and then immediately after the podcast went to hold hearings on the scandal. It's Massachusetts Democrat Congressman Seth Moulton—and he's taking you behind the scenes and deep inside of one of the biggest intelligence failures in American history. It's the kind of conversation you won't get anywhere else. And the kind of conversation you can't afford to miss. And it follows Rieckhoff digging into all of it, the veterans stories you probably missed, Opening Day for baseball, and a celebration of the life of George Foreman. Buckle up, America. It's been a massive, cold and painful week. And he hasn't even been inaugurated yet. We're hurtling towards more and more massive and painful weeks. And massive impacts. And this week the most consequential news revolved around the hearings for SECDEF and the cowardice of Republican Senators and their inability to stand up to Trump and deny Pete Hegseth. But the other party continues to be weak and feckless and sucks in its own unique ways. The Democrats put up a paltry attack. Again. They got rolled. Again. And now it looks as if Hegseth is inevitable and has set the tone for a January of bizarro world cabinet nominees and Trump momentum.  None of it is normal, none of it is acceptable and none of it is preordained. But the Democrats continue to lose. Lose power, lose control, lose the narrative, and lose whatever semblance of cohesion they had. It's time to stop investing in failure, America. The parties are the problem, and independents like you can be an important part of the solution.  Leave the herds. Declare your independence. And watch or listen up. Rieckhoff's got your weekly dose.  And another awesome, smart and unique guest. Kevin Baron is a highly experienced Pentagon and defense reporter with decades of experience in and around the Defense Department and almost a dozen Defense Secretaries. He's seen em all, and been part of the press corps that traveled with them around the world. He was the founding Executive Editor of Defense One, and a national security staff writer for National Journal, and a reporter for Stars and Stripes, the Boston Globe Washington bureau, and the Center for Public Integrity. For the last four and a half years we've brought you some of the most consequential independent voices in America. Celebrities, politicians, athletes. We've covered the whole gamut. And it's all built up to our 2024 Meet The Independent Candidates Series. It's the only place in media spotlighting independent veteran candidates from around the country at all levels. It's been critical to our mission and to the independent movement.  Highlighting these independents exposes them to a massive audience of like minded independent Americans. And we are honored to be that unique platform.  And the candidate in this episode is one that represents the movement, the independent spirit and his community as well as anyone we've met. He's Nick Batter, independent army veteran and candidate for Nebraska's State Legislature. He's an inspiring leader we know you're going to want to hear more from. It's the latest in our ongoing and groundbreaking “Meet the Independent Candidates” series and you can only get it here.  And your host Paul Rieckhoff digs in deeper to why Nebraska has become THE epicenter of the independent movement, punctuated by the massive announcement of a new poll showing Dan Osborn pulling ahead of Deb Fischer in his Nebraska Senate race we profiled in Episode 280. It's more momentum and more proof that the movement is growing. And on top of that there's been a massive spike in independent registrations in Pennsylvania this year. And that means that the 2024 Presidential election could rest in the hands of people like you. Independent Americans.  Rieckhoff also hits on Zelensky's big trip to the US, a national security issue you probably haven't heard about and why Pennsylvania is seeing a unique surge in voters registering as independents.  Every episode of Independent Americans is independent light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. In the wake of a catastrophic and nationally demoralizing presidential debate last week, and in advance of July 4th, Independent Veterans of America (IVA) announced its formation with an urgent mission to organize and elect independent veterans to public office across America. The organization is the first in American history to focus specifically on recruiting and electing independent and unaffiliated veteran candidates and incumbents. As of today, all details about IVA can now be found online at www.IndependentVeteransOfAmerica.org. Launching the week of Independence Day, IVA also announced a summer-long “Independents' Month” campaign to recruit independent veteran leaders–and to encourage those registered with the Democratic, Republican, Libertarian Party and any other party to “declare their independence”, put our country ahead of any party, and join IVA.  IVA will support independent veteran candidates at all levels — from local school boards to the US Senate. “Veterans uniquely appreciate and defend our core American values. Independent veterans live country over party. We are uniquely powerful. We look out for and support each other. And we are ready to step up to serve our country again in this time of need,” added Rieckhoff. Rieckhoff continued, “IVA will be the ground game that ensures victory for independent vets. And the courageous spark that inspires the movement. They no longer have to fight alone. This is a movement that will also launch our first wave of independent veteran candidates for office in 2024, with waves to follow every two years thereafter. IVA is the cavalry the independent movement has been waiting for. And the leaders America needs now.” Watch the IVA launch video here. As we approach our 200th episode of this show, it's time to take all our learning, all our allies, all our resources and focus on winning. Winning for America. And winning for America's future.  And our conversation with our guest in this episode is a major step toward doing that.  It's time to bring independents together.  It's time for Americans to unite too.  And in this episode, you're finally gonna hear from Andrew Yang (@AndrewYang). Candidate for President. Candidate for Mayor. Patriot, activist and father. And now, co-founder of the Forward party.  You're gonna hear his plan for independents. And how he's working to meet this moment. And in the weeks and months to come, you'll hear from other top and rising leaders about what they're doing to meet this moment–and specifically to unite and empower independents to protect, defend and improve our country.  But before we get to Andrew's plan, it's time for you to hear about mine.  As we've long discussed on this show, in this moment, we are at war. We are at war against enemies foreign and domestic. And we are at war for the soul of America. And if you want to win a war, you need a war plan.  Like every plan, it will change. That's good design. It's always evolving in response to changes on the ground. As the only saying goes, no plan will survive enemy contact. So I expect it to evolve. I expect it to adapt, improvise and overcome. It's far from perfect. But I also learned we can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. And with stakes as high as they are in America right now, we don't have any more time to waste. So it's time to stop revising and editing and start executing. And in some ways, we already have been.  Independent Americans is not just a podcast. Not just a brand. It's a movement. And every good movement needs a plan. And now, I'm ready to finally share with you mine.  I've talked about it a bit for the last few months. And teased a few pieces. And now, as the election is finally over, the year is almost at an end, and we reach Episode 200, my early Christmas gift to everyone is my strategy. My plan. My plan to build an Independent political infrastructure to save America. And it's called Operation Independents. Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by author, activist and social entrepreneur Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's content for the 42% of Americans that proudly call themselves independent. Always with a unique focus on national security, foreign affairs and military and veterans issues. Over the years we've brought you some of the best voices on the biggest subjects. From Stephen Colbert to Pete Buttigieg to Rachel Maddow the guests have been important voices to hear from at critical times for our country. And this year we've taken some time away from the usual dumpster fire of partisan news to focus on the issue that is nearest and dearest to our hearts. The stick that stirs our drink. Independents. And specifically why we think independents are not only an important constituency but the key to solving our country's political stagnation and gridlock.  So as you listen to the rhetoric and divisive partisan media as the fall midterms approach, consider this a primer. Independents 101. It will make you a smarter voter. And it will make you a smarter citizen. As the summer heats up and we all plummet headlong into the danger zone, we've got the real Top Gun. The real Maverick (actually, call sign Krusty). The fighter pilot that went head-to-head with al Qaeda and the Taliban, and then came home to go head-to-head with Mitch McConnell. Marine Corps fighter pilot Amy McGrath (@AmyMcGrathKY) flew 89 combat missions. And ran one of the most-watched 2020 Senate races in America. She is a trailblazing combat veteran, a former Naval Academy professor and a mother of three. And now she is leading the fight to protect women's reproductive health and rights in the wake of the Supreme Court's Roe decision. She's a fighter, and after joining us way back in Episode 17 in 2019, Amy is back to join our Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) for an important conversation and, more importantly, a plan. A plan to help stem the tide. A plan to fight. A plan for change. In advance of Independence Day, Amy stood with fellow veteran Allison Jaslow and Paul Rieckhoff to launch Operation Liberty: a plan to protect American troops, veterans, and our national security after Roe. Amy outlines the new effort and explains the devastating impacts the Roe decision will have on women and nonbinary service members and veterans. She also responds to the latest mass shooting on July 4, breaks down the status of the air war over Ukraine, and explains the political landscape in her home state of Kentucky–to include the potential of a run by UK basketball legend and past pod guest, Rex Chapman. She also shares if she likes the new Top Gun movie more or less than the original. As the war in Ukraine rages on, and just days after American journalist Brent Renaud was killed, President Zelensky delivered a historic address to the United State Congress. He again called on America and President Biden to enforce a no-fly zone. And to send MiG fighter jets. And our government has said they still will not. That may change. But for now, today, after the standing ovation from Congress, Zelensky got a big fat American NO to his top requests. But he didn't leave empty handed. He got a new injection of American firepower totalling almost $1B dollars. We dig into what that includes, how it will be used, and what could happen next–as only experienced, next-generation national security and military analysts can. And in this pod, we've got two of the best.  Jason Dempsey (@Jason_K_Dempsey) is a bad-ass warrior-scholar. A former Army infantryman with a PhD in politics who loves beer and bikes. A professor, author, researcher, combat veteran and one of the country's foremost experts on civil-military relations, Jason is West Point graduate, a PhD, and Adjunct Senior Fellow of the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) and a powerful voice that must be heard. He led units on the ground in Afghanistan, served inside the White House, and literally wrote the book on the modern United states military: Our Army: Soldiers, Politics, and American Civil-Military Relations. He's also a dad, a lover of good beer and no-BS guy who pulls no punches. Jason previously appeared in Episodes 95 (January 14, 2021) and Episode 76 (Sept. 10, 2020). Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is pulled from the truth beyond the headlines–and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. Never forget is the mantra of 9/11. It was on bumper stickers, repeated by Presidents, and hashtagged for two decades now. Twenty years later, has America forgotten?  Have we forgotten the lessons of 9/11? Have we forgotten what happened that day? Have we forgotten all that happened after? Have we forgotten about the public officials who said the air was clear at Ground Zero, the islamophobic attacks that happened across america, the rapid passage of the Patriot Act, the people snatched off streets and sent to GitMo without trail, the push for an invasion without a declaration of war, the rapid passage of the Authorization for Use of Military Force that allowed the unchecked expansion of Presidential power and the authority to conduct a forever war? Have we forgotten the unity? Have we forgotten the humanity? Have we forgotten the lessons?  From the bitter divisions around COVID, to the Capitol attack on January 6th, to the betrayal of Afghanistan, to the thousand of 9/11 first responders and survivors left alone to die from health impacts without help to this day...20 years after 9/11, it often feels like we've forgotten. And many in power, would like to keep it that way.  But as keepers of the 9/11 flame, our First-Responder host, Paul Rieckhoff, and his heroic guest consider it their responsibility to try to make sure America never forgets.  Host Rob Serra (@SerraRob) is a leader who can never forget. For over 10 years, he's been one of America's leading advocates for firefighters and first-responders. Rob was born and raised in Staten Island, NY and his first day in the field was September 11th. Along with thousands of others, he reported to the World Trade Center to help with the aftermath of the attacks. And now he's the host of his own groundbreaking new podcast, powered by Righteous Media, called The Firefighters Podcast with Rob Serra, FDNY (Ret.). It's the hottest podcast in America, literally. The show will feature interviews with firefighters and first responders, celebrities, and the always popular and delicious Firehouse cooking segment. Everybody loves firefighters. Now they have a podcast! And Rob is joining us exclusively to share more.  Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) first hosted Rob on this show way back in Episode #2--over two years ago. And this new conversation with Rob is as moving and as real as it gets. Parts of it are hard to hear, but you shouldn't turn away. These are the hard truths and about holding those in power accountable. It's a bold and blunt perspective you won't find anywhere else on the media landscape. As the dream of a “Hot Vax Summer” starts to look more and more like a Delta nightmare, Rieckhoff breaks down the historic, infuriating January 6th Congressional hearings. And, he rips into the haters attacking Olympic great Simon Biles' toughness and patriotism.  And we're taking a look back to the very first days of the pandemic. It's a fan favorite and one of ours too. We flash back to March 5, 2020 and come to you from deep in the heart of the legendary NBC 30 Rock building in New York as Paul joined the MSNBC's dynamic Stephanie Ruhle—as she took a quick break from between news segments and the markets began to react to the news of the pandemic. They also dig into the presidential race at the time, traffic, parenthood, and Stephanie's unlikely path into a life in the media. And there may have been some tequila.  If you've never heard this episode, you're in for a treat. And if you're a long time listener, you'll enjoy hearing this gem again.  From Episode 49 - March 5, 2020: With the 2020 race upended, the stock market disrupted, and the Fed drastically dropping interest rates, NBC News Senior Business Correspondent Stephanie Ruhle (@SRuhle) breaks it all down from the inside. And she sharply analyzes the spectacular collapse of Mike Bloomberg's campaign from the perspective of someone who worked for him. This candid and fun conversation gives you insights into the mind and life of a charismatic leader who overcame tremendous adversity to rise to the top of business and political media. Uncensored and unscripted, the former homecoming queen, turned Wall Street derivatives trader, turned cable TV anchor, shares how she juggles work as a mother of three, the values her mother taught her that fuel her success, and why she loves tequila.  Ruhle is a dedicated philanthropist, a media trailblazer, a champion for the underdog — and a fantastically fun person to hang out with. The former anchor of MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle and Velshi & Ruhle, Ruhle was also managing editor and news anchor for Bloomberg Television and editor-at-large for Bloomberg News. She's an advocate for a number of important causes including the Corporate Investment Bank (CIB) Women's Network, Women on Wall Street (WOWS) and Girls, Inc--nonprofit organization that encourages all girls to be "Strong, Smart, and Bold" through direct service and advocacy.  Stephanie Ruhle is another important, inspiring and iconic American success story that embodies what this pod is all about. After earning a coveted spot on the trading floor of a male-dominated Wall Street firm, she used her wits and unstoppable determination to dominate the playing field -- eventually graduating to the forefront of broadcasting in cable network news. Sebastian Junger is one of the most important authors, thinkers and public intellectuals in America. And one of the most interesting guys you’ll ever hear. He’s also a true badass and adventurer—the spirit of Hemingway—who joined us in Episode 100 and is back to talk candidly about his highly-anticipated, sure-to-be-best-selling new book, Freedom.    Throughout history, humans have been driven by the quest for two cherished ideals: community and freedom. The two don’t coexist easily: we value individuality and self-reliance, yet are utterly dependent on community for our most basic needs. In this intricately crafted and thought-provoking book, Sebastian examines this tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human. Over a year, Sebastian and three friends—a combat photographer and two War vets—walked the railroad lines of America. It was an experiment in personal autonomy, but also in interdependence. Dodging railroad cops, sleeping under bridges, cooking over fires and drinking from creeks and rivers, the men forged a unique reliance on one another. Junger weaves his account of this journey together with primatology and boxing strategy, the history of labor strikes and Apache raiders, the role of women in resistance movements, and the brutal reality of life on the Pennsylvania frontier. Written in exquisite, razor-sharp prose, the result is a powerful examination of the primary desire that defines us. Junger is the #1 NY Times Bestselling author of The Perfect Storm, Fire, A Death In Belmont, War and Tribe and the visionary filmmaker behind Restrepo, Korengal and Which Way Is The Front Line From Here? He is also the Founder of RISC (Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues)--a non-profit dedicated to promoting the safety of freelance journalists working in conflict zones.  Sebastian has been in the toughest war zones all over the world--and told stories about what happens in war and what happens after. He’s a defender of democracy. A keeper of the flame. And a conscience for America. He again joins our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for a real and extended conversation that will leave you informed and inspired. Rieckhoff also presses Sebastian to share the pieces of the book he left out, the time he almost died, what he’s looking forward to this summer and, as with all returning guests--pancakes v waffles.  It’s amazing conversation to inspire--and to help you stay vigilant. 109. Ethan Nadelmann. Pre-4/20 Marijuana Special Episode. New York Legalizes Cannabis. Should All Drugs Be Legal? Can Weed Spark America’s Post-Pandemic Economic Recovery?

Angry Americans with Paul Rieckhoff

The marijuana reform movement is on fire. In the election last year, beneath all the Biden and Trump drama, every single state-level cannabis ballot initiative passed--from New Jersey to Mississippi to South Dakota. And now, New York state has legalized the green stuff. Federal legalization is gaining steam, the industry is exploding and everyone wants in on the weed movement. Marijuana is no longer a partisan or fringe issue--it’s popular, mainstream and key to the future of the American economy post-pandemic. And it’s got tremendous support from most independent Americans. 7 in 10 independents and moderates back legalization. So as 4/20 (the unofficial marijuana holiday) nears, Independent Americans is sparking up the cannabis conversation again--and continuing our focus on the state of affairs, the controversies, and the future of cannabis. And we’re also digging into broader drug policy changes happening in America from opioids to psychedelics to criminal justice reform.   And so The Godfather of Drugs returns to IA! Ethan Nadelmann (@EthanNadelmann) has been called America’s real Drug Czar. He joined us way back in Episode 12--and he’s back again to bring his unparalleled insight and experience. Ethan has been the mastermind behind the biggest changes to drug policy in US history. A Harvard PhD and the son of a rabbi, Ethan founded the trailblazing Drug Policy Alliance in 1994 and was a lead strategist behind 30 years of reform--including California’s historic 2014 Prop 47 referendum that reduced drug possession for personal use to a misdemeanor. This pivotal political victory proved to be the first domino to fall in a string of historic national changes and unleashed the wave of legalization of marijuana in states all across America we see now—with more to come soon. Easter and Passover are behind us, March Madness is over, the vaccine is hitting millions of arms daily, and things are warming up nationwide. But few issues are heating up more than cannabis. And few have a more fascinating past--or a more exciting future. Ethan returns to Independent Americans to chop it up with our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) to break it all down. Rieckhoff is a longtime advocate for drug reform, who has appeared in the media often on the subject, written about it extensively, testified before Congress about the impacts of cannabis for veterans, and spearheaded the landmark VA Medicinal Cannabis Research Act of 2018. America is deeply divided. But not about marijuna anymore. And Independent Americans is packing a bowl of light to contrast all the heat of other political pods. An inspiring force for good and one of the most exciting thought-leaders in America, Wes is a best-selling author, father, activist, combat veteran and the CEO of poverty-fighting juggernaut Robin Hood. He joined us back in Episode 6--and he’s back now to give you hope. He talks about his decision to leave Robin Hood, his work to demand justice for murdered Army 2LT Richard Collins, changes at his alma matter, Johns Hopkins, the painful loss of a friend to suicide, and his recent announcement that he’s considering a run for Governor of Maryland.  His best-selling book, The Other Wes Moore describes his rise from inner city Baltimore to a Rhodes Scholarship, and is a phenomenon that will soon be a movie produced by Oprah. The combat veteran and regular on Morning Joe joins Independent Americans and his old buddy, fellow activist and veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for an insightful conversation about the pandemic after year one, how poverty, education and health needs have skyrocketed, and what the expansion of the child tax credit in the new COVID relief bill could mean for you. Wes and Paul also dig into Coming 2 America, and the Meghan and Harry interview, and what they both reveal about race and change in America.  It’s a fun and fast-moving conversation between Rieckhoff and another iconic, important and inspiring American. The kind of conversation between two renowned thought-leaders that has defined Independent Americans for almost two years. It’s the perfect episode to help you through the final days of winter-and launch you into an exciting spring we’ve all been working for.  America is more divided than ever before. America is under attack from within. Domestic terrorists invaded the Capitol. President Mayhem is blowing it all up on his way out. For months on Angry Americans, we warned that this could happen. It’s a dark time for all Americans. But this episode will help you understand it, unpack the causes and failures, and prepare for what comes next.  Chuck Hagel is back to break it down with our host: Army veteran and Founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff). Hagel shares unparalleled experience and perspective in this fragile time. He served as the Secretary of Defense under Obama and as a Senator from Nebraska. An independent Republican and the first Vietnam veteran in American history to lead the Pentagon, Hagel has been a straight-talking voice of reason for decades. And after joining us for a powerful Episode 82, he’s back now to analyze the unfolding national security and political crisis. He also explains how the urgent, unprecedented OpEd he authored with the other nine living former secretaries of defense secretaries came together. How did this happen? What will the military do now? How bad is it all? Hagel also breaks down the historic win for the Democrats in the Georgia Senate run-off election--and the future of our politics. This pod smartly and uniquely tears into all of it.  If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. Angry Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. Festivus is here again! And so is the great Jason Alexander. Star of stage and screen, winner of Tonys and Golden Globes, loved worldwide as George Constanza on Seinfeld, and insightful dropper of knowledge. Festivus is a secular holiday, made famous by the show Seinfeld and is celebrated on December 23, as an alternative to the pressures and commercialism of the Christmas season. Like this show (and like America), Festivus was born out of anger. Righteous anger. Tom Cruise righteous anger. George Washington righteous anger. John Lewis righteous anger. But like this show (and like America), Festivus has channelled that anger into positive impact---into change---and into happiness.  After a massive year of serious conversations with Admirals, political leaders, artists--and after a year of pain, chaos and mayhem--the legend returns for Festivus---Jason Alexander [33:00] (@IJasonAlexander) returns to end our 2020 with wisdom, laughs, and perspective. He breaks down Biden’s victory, the Georgia Senate special election, the devastation of the entertainment industry, the first concert he ever attended, and pancakes vs waffles. And our Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) breaks down the latest on the vaccine and the military, why every leading veterans group in America has called for Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie to resign, why Mayor Pete Buttigieg could be perfect as Secretary of Transportation and professes his love for Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas. The anniversary of the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor was this week. And almost exactly 79 years later, American is experiencing a Pearl Harbor loss of life from the pandemic every single day. And just like after Pearl Harbor, our national response will be led by America’s military. It’s the Department of Defense (and the Department of Veterans Affairs) that will help distribute and administer the vaccine nationwide to everyone. Both agencies are in chaos--and were already under political attack from President Trump. Now, President-Elect Biden surprised the nation with the controversial selections of General Lloyd Austin for Secretary of Defense and Denis McDonough for Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  As America navigates these treacherous waters, we have an inspiring, important, iconic leader to guide us through it. Retired Navy 4-star Admiral James Starvridis. [25:39] He led the NATO Alliance in global operations as Supreme Allied Commander with responsibility for Afghanistan, Libya, the Balkans, Syria, counter piracy, and cyber security. The Admiral is a great American success story. The grandson of immigrants who fled ethnic cleansing in Turkey, Starvridis wrote of his immigrant grandfather: "His grandson, who speaks barely a few words of Greek, returns in command of a billion-dollar destroyer to the very city—Smyrna, now called İzmir—from which he sailed in a refugee craft all those years ago."   Stavridis is built to serve. He’s an inspiring leader. He has a deep respect and regard for history. His perspective is deep. His vision is clear. He’s the perfect voice for the time we’re all facing. As President Mayhem dismantles the election, the Pentagon, and Democracy itself, President-Elect Biden returns to business as usual. And not in the good way. When the waters are this rough, we need an Admiral. It’s time us to all get on board, rush to our stations, man the guns, and face the storm. And this is the analysis you need to hear. Stavridis and Rieckhoff break down all of it.  If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. Angry Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. As America faces power fights like we’ve never seen before, the legendary founder of Public Enemy joins us to explore and explain fighting the power: 2020 style. This is Chuck D--a voice of consciousness, outrage, inspiration and action for over 35 years---unplugged and uninterrupted. Just when our country needs it the most.  Chuck D (@MisterChuckD) [35:37] is one of the most iconic and important American artists of the last century. He’s an activist, organizer, inspiration, and the ultimate angry American. He’s testified before Congress, co-hosted a political radio show with The Daily Show Founder, Liz Winstead and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, and collaborated with artists ranging from Prince, to Anthrax, to Sonic Youth, to Rage Against the Machine, to Gary Clark Jr., to Logic, to Sheryl Crow.  Chuck is the powerful, driving force behind arguably the most disruptive hip hop group in history. Born in the intersection of culture and politics, the hip hop trailblazers have interpreted the righteous anger of millions worldwide for decades. In the late 80s and early 90s, their first four albums went gold or platinum. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and honored this year with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.  Our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), and Chuck have been friends for almost two decades. And this is Chuck from inside his home, raw, candid, and without commercial interruption. Chuck and Rieckhoff know how to throw punches. And their conversation will give you advice on fighting the power (and living life) that will leave you inspired for the tough fights ahead. Chuck is a real and fascinating creative mind that breaks down the results of the election, sizes up Joe Biden and Donald Trump, and offers analysis on why New Yorkers (and Trump) are uniquely powerful right now. If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. And few artists in American history have been more angry than Chuck D. But more than almost anyone else, Chuck’s work and life is a demonstration in how to turn that anger into positive impact, and history-making art. Chuck is a perfect guest for these times--and this is an essential episode.  And Rieckhoff rips into the issues and headlines you need to know about--from the deepening partisan divide in America, to the chaos at the Pentagon, to Trump’s assault on the election results, to the pandemic’s hidden impact on the military and veterans. No matter what Tucker Carlson or your crazy uncle says, Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in the 2020 election for President of the United States. Yes, he did it. Yes, we did it. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won. America won. We won. Trump lost. Authoritarianism lost. Trumpism lost. History is made. The good one won. The bad guy lost. Yes, there is reason to celebrate. But that shit’s over. This is no time to take a victory lap, or nurse a hangover. Even when world leaders are calling to congratulate Joe Biden, Trump and his loyalists are going down fighting. And some, may not wanna go down at all. Half of America isn’t celebrating. And Trump is doing what he does. He’s blowing things up. Things that are vital to our national stability, our homeland security, our fight against the virus and our domestic tranquility. And after failing to blow up the election. He moved on to the single most powerful, most vital, most sacred institution we’ve got. The pentagon.  At the single most precarious time in recent history for our national security, Trump is firing #Yesper. Angry Americans host Paul Rieckhoff is no fan of the SecDef, but this massive disruption now is terribly bad for our troops & our security. #OurEnemiesAreCelebrating And it’s not just Esper. The Pentagon's top policy official James Anderson resigned. That paved the way for the nasty, Islamophobe retired Brig. Gen. Anthony Tata to take over policy. With our national security on the line, with a pandemic raging everywhere, Trump is flailing, and pulling this bullshit. And this is not a time for bullshit. It’s time for hard truths. And it’s time for hard leaders. Who can deliver, understand, communicate, plan for, and overcome hard truths. If you want sunshine, this is not your podcast. If you want truth, this is your place. Now and always. General Barry McCaffrey is no bullshit. General McCaffrey [27:27] is a serious man for these serious times. It’s a must-listen Angry Americans episode that will wake you up, focus your heart, and prepare you for the precarious days ahead. Welcome to a conversation that will help you stay calm. Welcome to a conversation that will help you stay cool. Welcome to a conversation that will help you stay vigilant. And a conversation that will help you stay frosty. “We expect panic,” that’s what a Russian hacker involved in attacks on America is predicting.   As Election results unfold all across our political battlefield, there’s a massive war happening nationwide that most Americans can’t see. Hackers, cyber terrorists and information warriors from Russia and around the world are taking shots at your election machines, your electrical grid, your hospital and your laptop. Right now, as the heat in America continues to rise, our enemies are strategically starting fires and adding gasoline all across the web. From your local election system, to your Facebook page, to the hospital you depend on for COVID care, to Donald Trump’s iPhone. America’s enemies are waging a complex and expansive war against you and everyone else in America as you read this. And it won’t stop when the election is called. It will expand. The misinformation and cyber threats facing America have never been greater. And we’ve never been more fragile. Independent host Paul Rieckhoff guides you through it--and breaks down the election results with a special focus on national security.  As cyber threats swirl all around us, our guest is a guardian on the watchtower: information warfare and Russian influence expert, Molly McKew. [21:50] McKew has traveled the world studying, analyzing and advising on the most urgent cybersecurity, misinformation and technology-based threats. McKew graduated from Stanford with a BA in Russian Language, History, and Culture, and the London School of Economics with an MSc in Russian/Post-Soviet Studies. She was awarded the Order of Honor by the President of Georgia for her service in defense of Georgian democracy. The future is here. It’s fascinating. And it’s dangerous. McKew is a thoughtful, sharp, experienced voice to break down how attacks and bad actors are impacting our elections now. And how they might impact you and your family in the days to come. She’s also got incredible stories from her journey’s around the world, a special sword on her wall, and a fun favorite drink answer.
