And So, She Left: Wisdom from Women Beyond the Corporate World
Our journey into entrepreneurship can often feel lonely. We may lack connections with people who understand us or miss out on useful feedback, leading to doubts and questions about our abilities. Istiana Bestari knows all of this well. As a young entrepreneur, Istiana experienced the struggles of working alone first-hand. She's persisted through long hours and plenty of stress, balancing multiple jobs while navigating the uncertain waters of the creative industry. But Istiana didn't simply fixate on her pain points; she turned them into points of connection with others. Together with her partner, Rachel Wong, Istiana co-founded Monday Girl, a supportive network for women facing similar career challenges. Through the network, they took their personal experiences and created a space for mutual support and understanding, essentially becoming users of their own service. In this episode, Istiana shares her journey as a co-founder, how she changed her networking approach, and how she handled stress during tough times. She discusses her periods of loneliness, how she found her community through sharing her experiences, and why it's so important for women to connect and collaborate on their professional journey.Learn more about Monday Girl. Margery Kraus is a PR powerhouse. With over five decades of experience in her industry, she's received every major communications award and founded the largest majority women-owned PR firm in the world: APCO Worldwide. But her successes weren't just the result of her work at APCO…they also came from her experiences as a mother. In this conversation, Margery shares her secrets to finding happiness both at home and behind the desk. Margery also opens up about the challenges she's faced as a woman in a male-dominated field, including condescension, bullying, and even betrayal. Through it all, her family and children have been her greatest source of growth and inspiration, as detailed in her book, “Roots and Wings.” Get Margery's Book: Roots and Wings: Ten Lessons of Motherhood that Helped Me Create and Run a Company Hosted by Katherin Vasilopoulos. On June 8th, 1989 the body of Cindy James was discovered in Richmond, BC. She was laying on her side, with her ankles and wrists fastened behind her & had a nylon stocking tied tightly around her neck. The cause of death however, would be overdose. Almost immediately, news networks would be sharing details of a nearly decade-long horror story of a woman, hunted down and scared for her life. By the time Cindy James went missing, she had reported over 100 incidents of stalking, harassment and assaults from an unknown assailant. But by July 12th the RCMP would officially rule out any foul play leaving the public to wonder how could a person do something to themselves like that and why would they? The investigation of her death would lead to one the longest and most expensive inquests in British Columbia's history. It would be ruled inconclusive, with her family believing she was killed and the police believing it was an elaborately staged suicide. While the cause of her death would remain inconclusive, one thing remained certain: nobody agreed that ruling made any sense. And we're still left wondering, to this day: If it was impossible that she did this to herself, then who murdered Cindy James? Leaving the waste-strewn Earth behind, we follow the team on their run all the way to its conclusion in orbit. On the way, we cast our eyes over the weed-smelling shanty-hulk of Zion, the sunlit Condé Naste-styled resort-perfection of Freeside, and the gloomy, Victorian-styled warren of the Villa Straylight. Fewer mattresses, more carpets. Earlier this year, paediatric nurse Johanna Bosowski embarked on her first mission with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to Agok, in northern South Sudan. Working on the neonatal ward, she encountered a young patient with a disease she had never seen in the UK before. In most developed countries, thanks to a vaccine, cases of tetanus are extremely rare. But, in 2013 (the latest year for which estimates are available), it still killed roughly 59,000 people around the world - many of whom wouldn’t have had access to the vaccine. Listen to the eighth episode of Everyday Emergency to find out how Johanna's young patient fought the infection, and more about Johanna's time in Agok. Read more about Johanna's mission to South Sudan on her blog: blogs.msf.org/en/staff/authors/johanna-bosowski "Everyday Emergency" is a podcast from MSF. In each episode, we bring you true stories from the frontline of humanitarian emergencies across the world. From the conflict in Syria to the refugee crisis in Europe, we’ll be talking to people with some incredible stories that may just change your outlook on life, or at least, for a moment, put things into perspective. In each podcast you’ll hear a true story written by an MSFer on the ground, read by an actor. We’ll then get them into the studio at MSF HQ for a chat about their time with MSF. Do up-and-coming filmmakers of today really need to study the masters of yesterday? Also, we begin our "Women in Film" series.About five years ago I wrote a blog post posing the question, "Should young filmmakers of today study the masters?" It generated a lot of great debate and conversation. That question has always sat with me, particularly now in an age where YouTube celebrities gain millions of views with little to no formal filmmaking education (let alone film history). So, what value, if any, is there to know the work of master filmmakers like Kurosawa, Hitchcock, Ford, Ophuls or Chaplain? This week we hear from six filmmakers and one master photographer on the topic.Women in FilmToday we also formally begin our "Women in Film" series as we hear an excerpt from a 4-person panel I conducted on the topic. Is that fact that I even have to make a special "series" a problem in itself?Support our SponsorWe have some more great use of Song Freedom songs. On a spectacularly late episode of Built to Play, we talk about the things that keep us up at night, like taxes, lies, and harassment.* In out post-Halloween episode we decided to touch on real horror. While people are definitely scared of zombified spiders, it's not really the thing we're worried about. There are scarier things out there that we deal with on a day to day basis, some of us more than others. We all fear poverty and one day being stuck on the edge of financial precarity, especially those who have families to support. Then there's Gamergate targets, who have had to either fight off a horde of trolls willing to ruin and threaten their lives, or carefully monitor their statements online. Beyond those two, we all have a personal horror that we have difficulty communicating, whether it's a traumatic incident or a psychological ailment. As game design tools have become more accessible to more people, we've seen more games that attempt to communicate personal experience. Tools that replicate old adventure game engines and visual novels been particularly useful for this, like Twine, which being primarily text based has a fairly low bar to entry. On this episode we talk to four designers and writers who used these tools to communicate real fears to players: David S Gallant on I Get This Call Every Day and the fear in financial precarity. Hear him starting 0:40 into our show. Michael Lutz on the Uncle Who Works for Nintendo and why he felt ethically bound to leave his players with hope. Hear him starting 28:30. Kaitlin Tremblay and JohnRathiganthan onLights Out, Please and the communicative power of interactive horror. Their segment starts at 41:40. Note Lights Out, Please has been nominated for five Canadian Video Game Awards! Daniel and Arman also give a sample of our local multiplayer primer,to give you a preview of what we've been exploring on the site. It starts 14:10. You can find the full segment on our multiplayer hub. This episode was made with the help of the Free Music Archive, with samples from WNYC's On the Media, and CBC Radio's As it Happens and Metro Morning. In a loft in downtown Los Angeles, artist Moses Storm is currently exhibiting The Modern Millennial, a hybrid between performance art and interactive theater. Displaying his work at and living in the loft full-time, Moses is presenting an uncensored look at the modern-day millennial by giving visitors unfettered access to every aspect of his life. Intrigued by the project from the time Moses first launched his Kickstarter campaign to fund it, Jen goes to see the exhibit and talk with Moses about the piece now that it's open to the public.
