"If we never make the mistake, we never learn from it."-Rev. Katy Miles WallaceMany of us struggle with engaging in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts because we are afraid of getting things wrong - that we'll say the wrong thing, do the wrong thing, or mess up in some way. Because that's how we learn! In today's episode, hear Katy's encouraging words, offering wisdom and grace for those of us who struggle with perfection and need the reminder that it's okay to not get it right all the time.About KatyRev. What is “Eco-Theology?" In this podcast, guest editor Rev. Dr. Astudillo explores the meaning of eco-theology. What does it mean to see our relationship to the Earth, to each other and to God through this lens? How does eco-theology dialogue with Science, Church history, and Scripture to seek solutions to the environmental and climate crises? Rev. Astudillo points to three, biblical, eco-theologies that come to our rescue and harness the power of faith communities. About Our Guest   Rev. Dr. Neddy Astudillo is guest editor of our Spring 2023 edition, Eco-Teología / Eco-Theology, our first-ever bilingual collection. A Presbyterian pastor, a co-founder of the Angelic Organics Learning Center, coordinator of the Climate Justice and Faith Spanish program at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, and more, Rev. Astudillo currently teaches in Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, the USA and Venezuela. Her written works are published widely. Perhaps most notably, she is a co-author of the National Council of Churches declaration, God's Earth is Sacred, along with Bill McKibben and numerous of America's leading clergy, and the book, God's Earth is Sacred: Essays on Eco-Justice. We are truly honored to welcome Rev. Dr. Astudillo and her work to the AllCreation collection. Dr. Astudillo on “Eco-Theology"From her guest editor's overview: “The environmental and climate crisis threatens to silence the voices of hundreds of species of animals and plants on a planetary level, but for more than 500 years, the voice of peoples and cultures has also been threatened by the same forces responsible for the environmental crisis: patriarchalism, anthropocentrism, dualism, racism and colonization.“To assist in the dialogue between the diverse materials of this issue we are guided by Eco-Theology, a critical discipline of reconstructing the relationship between God, human beings, eco-systems and the universe.“There are those who say that the Earth can survive without us, but if... everything God made was very good, in times of environmental crisis it is up to us to find out why; to save our faith..."   Thanks for listening! In this episode, Bishop Megan talks about their trans identity. Through popular culture and with age, they knew they were queer around the time they went to college. Eventually, as the world and language evolved, "trans" became what they identify with. One of their children is also trans, and Bishop Megan shares their perspective of what it's like to parent the kid. Then they us about life after college. Deciding to pursue religious studies wasn't so obvious, as churches at that time refused to ordain LGBTQ people. They ended up at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley. Within the first year there, they started working with hungry and homeless folks on Polk Street in The City. We pivot to the story of meeting their wife. It involves therapy homework and falling off a curb. Needless to say, the two hit it off. Because they wanted to adopt children, they moved to the Sunset to a place with multiple bedrooms. They continue living there with their family today. Next, Bishop Megan discusses the arduous process of becoming a bishop in the Lutheran Church. If you missed it, Megan is the first trans bishop of a major U.S. church. We end this podcast with Megan talking about the current state of things in San Francisco as well as their vision for the next phase here in The City. If you missed Part 1, please go back to hear the story of Bishop Megan's early life and their ancestors. We recorded this podcast at Harvey's in the Castro in August 2021. Photo by Vince Donovan

A book that emerged out of her years of teaching at the seminary level and the questions that students asked in the classroom. While the text is written for seminarians, it is designed for study in the local congregation as well. She expresses the believe that theology is about life and ultimate concerns. The key motif of the text is “Freedom.” Luther in his life demonstrated freedom for himself and others under the gospel. The extensive resources for further reading in each chapter will certainly benefit seminary students and congregational members.

Isai Garcia, a seminary student at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary gives a remarkable account of his recent,  eyeopening pilgramage to Palestine and the Holy Land. Sadly, the majority of American Christian who go to Israel, just go as tourists looking at Biblical sites. And, most often, they come away with no idea about the obstacles their Palestinian Christian brothers and sisters in Christ face in a country of military occupation that is rife with discrimination, even towards the arab citizens of Israel. In this program, Isai recites "The Pilgrim's Prayer" that started every day on their travels through the Holy Land. (31 minutes) In the photo, Isai is standing in front of the Israeli separation wall that is surrounding and choking off places like Bethlehem (see "Keep Bethlehem Open and Help Palestinian Christians Stay")

A bit of a change of pace tonight considering the many interested in UFOs, if some Goddesses might have been ETs, and the seeming new secularized religious mythology of "ancient aliens....Ted Peters, investigator of UFOs for 40 years, who previously served as the Louisiana State Director of MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network is currently Emeritus Professor of Systematic Theology & Ethics at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA.  He co-edits the journal Theology & Science at the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences.  We'll discuss if Christianity is threatened by the idea of ETs and where that might fit into that ideology, if he believs Earth may face a crisis if UFOs reveal themselves, if he thinks traditional religions are due to mistaken interpretations of visitations by ancient astronauts - and perhaps, most important, why he as a Christian theologian and religion scholar, interested in UFOs.

Ted Peters is our guest tonight. Did aliens visit mankind at the dawn of time? Peters says no. Instead, he argues, ancient astronauts are simply a manifestation of mankind's yearning for a higher power in our lives. What was once old gods that lived in the sky, have been re-imagined as extraterrestrial beings from outer space. Furthermore, world peace and long life will come from the scientific community, not world governments. Ted Peters is Emeritus Professor of Systematic Theology and Ethics at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. Peters joins the program for a lively discussion on faith, science, and UFOs.

Astrobiologists and Ufologists are not typically seen together at the same BBQs. Why? Each argues that the other is not attending to the evidence. NASA’s Astrobiological Roadmap asks three research questions: What is the origin of life? Is there a second genesis of life? How will life expand from Earth to elsewhere? SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Life Institute) is listening for radio signals emitted from extra-solar civilizations. This is hard-nosed science. Yet, ufologists also believe they are employing scientific methods such as scrupulous investigation of sightings, hypnotic regression, statistical analysis, and such. Ufologists revere science. Why, then, is there tension if not outright hostility between the fields?  Ted Peters is the author of UFOs—God’s Chariots?, first published in 1977. Its penetrating cultural analysis of the UFO phenomenon remains definitive. He teaches systematic theology at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He co-edits the journal, Theology and Science, at the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences. He has recently served as consultant to NASA and SETI on astro-ethics. He is the author of GOD—The World’s Future (Fortress, rev. ed. 2000); Science, Theology and Ethics (Ashgate 2003); and co-author of A Theological and Scientific Commentary on Darwin’s Origin of Species (Abingdon 2009).
