CW: Discussion on sex, sexuality, and fatphobiaFriends, I hope you were able to join me last week for part one of this conversation with my guest Angela Corry. Angela is a clinical and sexual health educator, an expert in fatphobia and sex, and last week we talked about body image and fatphobia and how perceptions have changed throughout history. Fatphobia is very pervasive in our society and it shows up everywhere, especially in areas of sexuality and pleasure. This second episode with Angela really focuses on pleasure. It's our right, in whatever body, as a human, to experience pleasure on every level, including sexually. But why don't those of us in bigger bodies often feel comfortable experiencing or seeking pleasure? And how can we change that? As Angela states right at the start of our conversation, “sexy isn't a size”. We deserve to feel good. What feels good for our body, whether a great orgasm or the pleasure of a wonderful bath in a tub that fits us, is pleasurable and we deserve that. Why is that hard for us to accept if our bodies are bigger? It's very much a link between fat and sex and fat and food and the way societal structures drill certain reluctances into us due to size. Much of the work Angela does with her clients starts with confidence and self-esteem, it starts with helping people eliminate the barriers we have between us and experiencing pleasure. We talk about learning to accept our bodies and touch our bodies, bringing all five senses into our pleasure, and not being afraid of sex toys or pillows or adjustments needed to make sex more pleasurable for us. This episode dives into everything we don't talk about enough when it comes to fat, sex, and pleasure. I'm so glad you're here for this!__About Angela Corry:Angela Corry, RN, BScN, ACCN, is a clinical educator and sexual health educator for Loving Choices in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alberta, her Advanced Critical Care Nursing (ACCN) specialty from Mount Royal University and her certification in Holistic Sexual Health Education from the Institute of Sexuality Education and Enlightenment (ISEE). Angela has over 20 years of nursing experience in emergency and intensive care as a bedside and clinical nurse educator. During this time, she has contributed to several medical journals, including the Emergency Medical Journal. For the past two years, while focusing on health promotion and wellness, Angela realized that her pre-conceived notions about sexuality and body image were enmeshed with mainstream society's views on what is “normal,” “healthy,” or “feasible.” She believes it is necessary to reflect on the nature of sexuality and size diversity and how they fit and are used in our social, economic, and political structures. Angela wants to help empower individuals to live authentically by helping clients and professionals make choices that cultivate body positivity, accept size diversity and personal empowerment, enhance sexual well-being, celebrate the diversity of sexual expression, and promote equity for all within the current structures of our fat-phobic society.__Resources mentioned in this episode:“Fat” by Hanne Blank“Better Sex Through Mindfulness: How Women Can Cultivate Desire” by Lori A. Friends welcome to another episode of Thrive Beyond Size. Today's topic is so big that you'll hear from my guest twice. We're doing a two-parter, part one this week and part two next week. My guest is Angela Corry and she's a clinical and sexual health educator from right here in my hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. Angela and I are going to talk about pleasure at every size. Sex? Yes. Intimacy? Yes. But also just pleasure in general. Enjoying pleasure. For this conversation, we are really focusing on why women often don't feel deserving of pleasure which often stems from the fat-phobic society we live in. Men suffer from this too, of course, but women do more so and we're focusing on women in this episode. But why is fat our foe? And how can we see fat as just a fact of who we are and not what we deserve? Angela shares a bit about her personal journey and how she came to understand that her preconceived notions about sexuality and body image were entwined with mainstream society's views on “normal” health and size. That brought about a change in her and she has devoted herself to helping empower individuals to live authentically, accept size, and enhance sexual well-being ever since. Angela and I talk through the history of body image, tracing through changing eras from when fat was preferred in culture to where it shifted and thin became the overriding aesthetic focus. Angela shares a very personal and powerful story that illustrates how much work we each have to do to step out of society's viewpoint. When did we collectively stop viewing fat as just a body size and start seeing it as disgusting or something to avoid? And why do we allow our size to dictate our right to pleasure? These are questions we explore in this episode and Angela is so amazing, so insightful, that I can't wait for you to hear this episode and the next one with her.__About Angela Corry:Angela Corry, RN, BScN, ACCN, is a clinical educator and sexual health educator for Loving Choices in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Waning libido is common but it's not the only thing to consider. We're looking at libido, sex, and orgasm all inclusively in this episode. If this all makes you blush, it's audio-only, and we're just talking. But if you don't have this discussion with girlfriends because sex talk is uncomfortable, you don't want it and your partner does or vice versa, I'm actually sharing this podcast for exactly that reason. If not here, where? Intimacy (including sex) is actually quite tied to overall health and wellbeing. If an integral part of your life is missing but you're not inspired to discuss it, then maybe this is for you. It's still pretty PG so, no worries there. A European study conducted by a sports nutrition company in 2022 with expert opinions from a Professor of Exercise Science and a Sexual Health Educator set out to find out how different sports improve sex lives. The study was conducted by survey of 3200 Europeans who play sports or exercise. Interestingly, several of the sources I found reviewing references for this episode were done by sports companies of some sort. I point this out, because it's no accident. We care about sex. They're posting content and spending time, money, and energy polling, conducting surveys for one reason, to sell more products. I want you to know that if you're feeling like if this were a book you'd have to put a brown paper wrapper over it, don't. This is something pretty foundational to every human. Sex and Exercise & Sports Participation Exercise (and sport) can be a part of bringing this little bit of joy and connection back or enhancing it if it's already present for you. I'll put in resources a few other connections that can help. But above all, 100% transparency, strength training may be a girl's a boy's, and a couple's best friend, as long as you're in the sweet spot. (couldn't resist!) It's not football players .. in fact they were the least likely to reach the big O and the least confident in the bedroom. Golfers enjoy the most sexual activity among all popular sports, followed by dancers and weightlifters. More than three-quarters of golfers said the sport improved their “o experience. Golfers, and this is probably better golfers, are very in tune with their body position, confident in their ability to affect results by changes that they make. Incredible self-awareness in any area of life spills over into awareness elsewhere. Dancing, provided it's not a waif-like ballerina sacrificing her libido by starving and extreme discipline, is very rewarding in terms of intimacy. Dancing fosters feelings of lust, sensuality, and sexiness. Those least adventurous on the dance floor may also be least adventurous or confident in the bedroom. Easiest place to start? Some dance lessons to help you get more confident in your own body. There aren't many things more sensual than dancing with the right partner. Sex and Sports Specifics 78% of regular walkers report it improving their sex life. It might be that exploring new places and having new adventures builds trust, happiness and satisfaction that pays off in the bedroom. Consider getting off the beaten path. 81% of swimmers say swimming improved their sex lives but only 44% are confident in the bedroom. While women actually enjoy watching football, the benefits of the sport don't actually add up to the best results in the bedroom. Fballers aren't all that confident and don't climax as much as other sports participants. Running can have a positive effect on hormone levels provided it's not too much. Endurance exercise decreases testosterone and increases cortisol levels, having the opposite desired effect (see what I did there). Couples, about 66% on average, who run together report a higher frequency of sex compared to those who don't. (a survey conducted by Brooks Running) What was the quote? "The Tango is the vertical expression of a horizontal desire." – Jennifer Lopez' character in Shall We Dance? More than any other sport, 90% of weight trainers said it had a positive impact on their sex life. What's the physiological reason? Weight training not only improves testosterone levels that directly impact libido or desire, it also edges out yoga for support in cognitive function and problem solving, lending to decreased stress levels through enhanced resilience. Physiologically, no other exercise will change your body shape in the way strength training has the ability to do. Aerobic activity may support weight loss to some extent, but it leaves a smaller version – possibly even less toned – than you started with. Parting Thoughts About Sex and Sport One of the biggest killers of libido, sex and orgasm tends to be a mismatch between fitness status of partners. Even if the couple doesn't do the same fitness or sport activity, those that support each other independently pursuing some type of fitness activity tend to also have a better relationship. Awkward conversations are common in healthcare settings. Learning how to actually have these conversations (or start these conversations, or navigate these conversations)…that's much more rare. Discussing sexual health doesn't have to be challenging for patients or providers; with some preparation and some practice, it can become as second nature as any other discussion you have in the exam room. Making assumptions, or avoiding the topic altogether, can create missed opportunities and serious gaps in the patient's care. A common misconception is that the patients will bring up anything that you should know – in reality, many patients are hoping that you will start the conversation. This week, we talk with Genesis, a college health Nurse Practitioner and sexual health educator, and get some great strategies for handling these conversations. We'll discuss: ✅ How to obtain a patient's sexual health history✅ The Six P's – what they are and how you can use them to guide your conversation✅ Strategies for getting comfortable discussing sex with patients✅ Which patients are candidates for discussing sexual health While the conversation is important, addressing sexual health with your patients means more than just talk. We also cover strategies for helping your uninsured/underinsured patients, as well as how to increase your effectiveness with STI (sexually transmitted infection) testing and treatment. This episode is a special one, it's a trip down memory lane. A couple of years ago I sat down with an incredibly smart and talented young lady. She turns out to be The one and only Lydia Collins. For context, this interview was done around late 2018 so you are listening to the future in the making. Ever since the, Lydia has gone on to publish another poetry book To Everyone We've Ever Been, her work has been featured in major publications like The New York Times And more. She continues her work as a Sexual Health Educator and freelance Writer. Back in 2018, I'd bought a poetry book off her titled “Angry Black Woman” and I just wanted to talk to her more about the project itself. Little did we know the conversation was gonna be well rounded. Not only that but it led to a magical creative partnership and an ever better friendship. In this convo we Lydia drops gems of the Black experience in America, Her book at the time titled “Angry Black Woman”, her freelance work as a write and as a Sexual Health Educator, and so much more. We even talked about Trevor Noah and Tupac, two of our favourite humans. Needless say we talked about lots and you are in for a treat. So open your ears and get your note books ready for Poetic Justice. Here she is, my homie — Lydia Collins. As always, thank you for tuning into Conversations with Chance Mutuku*. Ep 168: Female Sexuality and Sexual Help for Women with Jordan D'Nelle. This is a very epic and amazingly informative episode for women and men too! Jordan D'Nelle is a Physician Associate, Women's Sexual Health Educator, Intimacy Coach, and speaker. She is the founder of the Vaginas, Vulvas, and Vibrators Podcast. Her goal is to raise awareness about conditions, sexuality, sexual intimacy and relationships that specifically affect women. She wants to help normalize women's health and create a safe space for women to feel validated. She has been featured in Cosmopolitan magazine, Women's Health Magazine, and many other podcasts. She is a resident blogger for ForPlay films. She has helped many woman overcome shame and have better intimacy with themselves and their partners.Jordan and I shared an amazing discussion. We chatted about how erotica is a tool, a resource to improve your sex life, as are sex toys. She addressed how poor sex ed is in the US because it has always focused on the male and ignores the female, and shame starts there. We need to rewrite these stories as we create more comprehensive and thorough sex ed now and include both sexes in all discussions. Educators need talk about the real purpose for sex, which also can lead to decreasing shame around sex.She explained how squirting is not pee. Get a squirt blanket! Yes! It's a thing! She also elaborated on the types of orgasms females have and that pleasure should be the focus. I loved how our discussion went when Jordan and I talked about ethical porn, erotic blueprints, and kink, and how kink can be used to heal past trauma by rewriting it. Other fantastic topics we hit on are that there is no "normal" when it comes to sex and kink and how the BDSM community really does it right in terms of consent and communication. It's a great model all relationships should adopt whether they are into kink or not. She talked about how we are all way kinkier than we are lead to believe by society and culture. She also talked about the benefits of daily masturbation for females, period sex, and taking the time to learn what turns us all on. She highly recommends the book (affiliate) Pussy Reclamation: https://amzn.to/3nEUeF8Connect with Jordan here: https://jordandnelle.com/menu/Welcome!Hello! Welcome to my podcast! LORI HOSTS A CASUAL CHAT WITH CO-MODERATOR/COACHES CINDI & REBEKAH TO TALK ALL THINGS INTIMACY. CINDI ROBERTS Sex and sobriety - a pretty unique combination and a topic that many people avoid. After finding recovery from alcohol in November 2016, I struggled with how to combine my professional experience in sexuality education and my newfound passion for helping women on their sober journey. Why weren't women talking about sex in the meeting rooms? Was I the only one struggling with confidence in the bedroom without the mask of alcohol? The more I started the conversations, the more women opened up. So many women are navigating intimate relationships in sobriety and have concerns, questions and fear. That's when I realized that talking about sex openly is a gift and I wanted to share my knowledge with the recovery community! My clients would describe me as a positive motivator, attentive listener and gentle teacher that also tells it like it is. I want to focus on the future while acknowledging your past and helping you move through the difficult stuff. I know it can be scary or difficult to ask for help and to open up your world to another person. Knowing this, I take special care to provide a relaxed, supportive and non-judgemental space for you. I have been devoted to serving the public health community for over 20 years. After earning my Master's degree in Health Education, I knew that I wanted to specialize in the field of human sexuality and help shatter the taboo around the gift of sex. I worked in the community health setting and the hospital system and gained more public health knowledge with each new endeavor. For 13 years, I built a prosperous $2.6 million business in the network marketing industry. I not only had one of the largest teams in the multi-million dollar company, but I served on the esteemed Board of Directors for 8 years. In this position, I was able to train thousands of consultants in sexual health education and product knowledge (yep, we sold sex toys!) I retired from the company in 2016 to create my dream job of motivational speaking and sexual health consulting. My zone of genius was (and still is) helping individuals feel more confident about their own sexuality and intimate relationships. In 2018, I decided to earn my certificate as a Certified Professional Coach and Certified Professional Recovery Coach from the International Association of Professional Recovery Coaches. I also completed the She Recovers Coaching program to help women in recovery from a variety of issues. So, I talk about sex, alcohol, grief, divorce, intimacy.... all of it! REBEKAH ROSE WALL On my journey of healing and recovery, I realized that self-care isn't just about activities or events that make you feel good. It has to do with how you speak to yourself, loving yourself and cultivating things like Grace Courage Confidence Boundaries Worthiness Authenticity Enough-ness Self-Acceptance Self-Compassion It's also about cultivating community and joyful relationships. It's about taking our yoga off that mat, and living it each and everyday. Which is what inspired me to create this space, a space to cultivate a lifestyle that awakens your innate ability to befriend your body, bring peace to your heart and stillness to your mind. Life is real and raw and these episodes are a reflection of just that. ______________________ Jolene Creely is a Cree and Dakota mother from Okanese First Nation in Treaty 4 Territory. Jolene is a mother, university student, Full Spectrum Indigenous Birth Worker, and Sexual Health Educator. Her passion is to reclaim and revitalize Indigenous birthing practices and knowledge. Jolene felt compelled to follow her passion after the birth of her first baby in 2017. Her blood memory was activated after her experience in childbirth that she felt called to the birth worker realm. The reason that Jolene feels so passionate about reclaiming Indigenous knowledge of pregnancy and birth is because Jolene comes from a strong matriarchal line of Indigenous midwives. Jolene's goal in the future is to be catching babys as a midwife when the time comes, but for now she is comfortable supporting families as a Indigenous doula. Jolene currently serves the Treaty 4 area as a birth worker/doula and sexual health educator.

My guest on this episode is Dr. Keosha Bond, a behavioral scientist and sexual health educator from New York. She and I had such a great time during this interview. Before I started recording, we were chatting about a few different things just getting to know each other before the recording officially started. I often do this with guest and it helps builds rapport and eases their nerves a bit if they’re feeling anxious about the interview. Dr. Bond and I quickly found out that we have several unique things in common both personally and professionally, and it was simply nice and refreshing to be able to visit with her for a little while.
Today on the show, I answer questions about what books and t.v. shows have influenced my sexual identity, addressing my white privilege, how to work through a negative first sexual experience and I share a little embarrassing story. Also, our favourite Sexual Health Educator, Jennifer Gibson, is back for Part 2 of our interview where we discuss our role in creating more equitable spaces as educators, in particular for BIPOC communities. But then, what about the times when you want to know they've been bullied? Lily Isobella is a Sexual Health Educator and founder of the One a Day Project. She explains how we can give our kids the confidence to stand up for themselves and why we need to stop using the term 'dobber'.
Today I am in Tartu talking to Kristina Birk-Vellemaa who is a Sexual Health Educator for the Eesti Seksuaaltervise Liit (The Estonian Sexual Health Association). I wanted to talk to Kristina about how society sees male porn addiction. It kinda seems to me that it is something which is really being experienced by a lot of guys but no one is really talking about it right now. We talk in general about how sexual education is given in Estonian schools these days and the work Kristina does in educating young people and in particular school teachers. We go through how porn is kinda normalized these day and how that's not necessarily bad but we totally don't talk about it much. We don't have a really great way of working out how much is too much porn and in many ways we don't even have standard definitions for this stuff. Shoutout and thanks to Spark HUB Tartu and Contriber for letting me use the space to record. Watch the full episode on YouTube https://youtu.be/4w9kUK7E5cs

Let's Coach with Carolyn - Career Strategist, Leadership and Life Coach
Romance, Relationships, and Communication - It’s More than words…. We often hear that communication is important in order to have a good healthy relationship. We hear it, but it’s also the reason many relationships end or never get started. We are expected to know exactly what our partner wants and meet their heart's desire. We’re often giving our partners what we want, not what they want. We hold back from saying the things we want to say, asking questions we want to ask, or experiencing things in life we dream of. We can easily become bored and start looking in other directions for what we think we need. If we learned the language of romance and relationships, we can change the game and have a fun, strong, healthy and lasting relationship. Part of this involves being comfortable with your own mind, body, and soul. Joining us this week to discuss how is a Let’s Coach favorite, Sexual Health Educator and Pure Romance Consultant, Mrs. Sheila Tempchin. Also joining us to offer the male perspective is the prior co-host of Let’s Coach, Mark Thorn. Tune in and learn how communication is key to creating a romantic, long-lasting relationship.

Guest writer Rebecca Gifford, the wife of Larry Gifford In this episode of When Life Gives You Parkinson’s, Larry and I explore how we keep the magic alive in the bedroom and beyond when there is always an elephant (a.k.a Parkinson’s disease) in there with us eating peanuts and taking up a lot of space. Your bed. It’s your private space. It’s restful, probably even peaceful sometimes, and hopefully happy. It can be a safe place to feel and even grieve. If you’re fortunate enough to have someone to share it with, it’s a place for communication, intimacy and excitement. Larry and I have our most important conversations in bed. Since he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s these conversations happen regularly. We talk, share triumphs of the day — sometimes big successes and sometimes simply a hilarious moment with our son. We complain, cry, say things we probably shouldn’t, unconsciously avoid saying some things we probably should. Sometimes we have sex (but we’ll talk about that a lot more in this week’s podcast). And we sleep. All the things that happen in our bed are the most important things for our relationship, and for our well-being. It makes sense to pay attention to it. That’s why Larry and I sought advice from nurse and sex health educator, Maureen McGrath. “This is new for you, Parkinson’s disease, and it is different for every patient,” she said. McGrath told us 70% to 80% of the couples she counsels are also dealing with medical conditions that impact intimacy in their relationship. We had a lot of questions. Do we have a bedroom that is conducive to sleep and wellness? “Sleep is critical.” McGrath said, “Make sure you don’t have a television in your room, or an iPad or bring a phone to bed. Dedicate your room to sleeping and/or sex.” Have we created a space that is as safe and nurturing as it was before Parkinsons entered our life? McGrath suggested, “Make your room an oasis.” We made plans to use our aromatherapy diffuser more frequently and make sure our bed is plush and comfortable for us both. Be sure to listen to snippets from our bed shopping excursion. Are we still affectionate with each other, even though nothing is as effortless as it used to be? “You have a need to be close, you have sexual desire, but you may have a little bit of fear around it,” she said. McGrath recommended not overthinking it, returning to what you know and making it a priority appointment in our life. By acknowledging Parkinson’s has changed how we sleep, connect, and show affection for each other, we are learning to look the PD elephant in the eye, smile at it and thrive on all levels. Including in bed. Thank you for listening. During this year's series on dating, romance and relationships, we talked about "What Men Really Want", "The Best Love Affair You Can Have" and Dating Outside the Lines". But once you have the man or woman you dreamed about, how do keep the sparks flying? It's easy to have the excitement of a new romance to keep you intrigued, but as time goes by, that can easily fade. You find yourself rarely having quality time together and you lose all of the spontaneity. Simply put, the romance is gone and it's boring. As time goes by, it's like your just existing in a relationship. Love and romance should never come down to that. This week on "Let's Coach", returning to the show is one of our favorite guests, Sheila Tempchin. Sheila is a Sexual Health Educator, Romance Coach, and very successful and award-winning Pure Romance Consultant. We'll be discussing some fun ways to keep romance alive so the spark in your relationship never goes dim. Also returning to offer the male perspective is Executive and Leadership Coach, Mark Thorn. Mark served as the co-host of "Let's Coach" for several years and it's always great when he can stop by for a visit. Relationships need to flourish all hours of the day, so tune in for this fun episode as we talk about "Love In The Afternoon".
