Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists. When Christopher Jefferies caught the glassblowing bug in high school, he charted a course that would ultimately result in building his own glass shop by "paying his dues." From working on Dale Chihuly's team to sleeping on the floor of a Czech hot shop, Christopher immersed himself in the fast-paced environment of production glass studios that created hundreds of pieces daily. Once he launched his own studio, his work evolved into multiple-element wall installations on a large scale. Christopher talks about going after those "big fish" on the art festival scene and how he navigates his unique career. https://jeffriesglass.com/#blownglassart  #residentialwallart #lagunabeachglassartist #modernwallart #customglassartdecor #art  #corporateart  #homedecor #chihuly #glassinstallation #wallglass #studioglassmovement #glassartist #interiorstylehunter #designerwallart #homestaging #crystalglass #sculpture #artistinspiration #independentartist #independentartistpodcast #indieartspod #artistpath #artistpodcast #artistconversations #artistprocess #workingartist  #contemporarycraft  #artisticvision #youtubepodcast Visual artists Douglas Sigwarth https://www.sigwarthglass.com/ and Will Armstrong http://www.willarmstrongart.com/ co-host and discuss topics affecting working artists. oin me, Jason LaChance host of the  @KnockinDoorzDown  podcast, certified addiction recovery coach, and mental health advocate for my sit down with special guest Michael Unbroken  @MichaelUnbroken  Michael states, that he didn't sign up to be the spokesman for survivors of child abuse. The job sucks and he means that. The truth is that the universe chose Michael for this role. He has been gifted with the ability to navigate the most harsh and vicious child abuse to come out on the other side seemingly whole. He says seemingly because there will always be a part of him that was stolen that he cannot get that back. None of the rage, drugs, sex, rock n' roll, or anger will give him what was stolen. The world is both beautiful and brutal and Michael has seen the best and the worst of it. He knows that the abuse he suffered has given him an undeniable strength that he was only able to tap into after falling face-first into complete darkness. There is truth in understanding that Mindset is Everything. There are no shortcuts, trust Michael he tried them all. There is hard work and on the backside of that is getting your life back. We discuss the following and more. Intro 00:00 People think genius comes naturally, I've done my 10,000 hours. 4:00 I needed to leave my environment. 10:30 Most of your friendships are liabilities, not assets. 12:30 I have the life that I want. In this thought-provoking episode of Life, Lemons & LemonDrops, co-hosts Greer and Whitnie tackle the relatable and challenging concept of "paying your dues" and the essence of problem-solving. Whether navigating the corporate ladder or steering the ship of your venture, Greer and Whitnie delve into the often-undiscussed side of professional growth: the tasks and responsibilities that might not be glamorous but are essential stepping stones towards achieving more significant goals. Through engaging discussions, the hosts explore that paying your dues is more than just a rite of passage; it's a vital phase of expanding one's skills and toolkit. They highlight how the mundane or less desired tasks contribute significantly to personal and professional development. By adopting a mindset focused on problem-solving and recognizing the value in every challenge, individuals can turn seemingly menial tasks into opportunities for growth and innovation. Greer and Whitnie share compelling stories to illustrate their points, like the tale of a content creator expressing his views about a Beyoncé tour crew member challenging her about the existence of a 30-foot camera. This anecdote underscores the importance of research, adaptability, and the willingness to face reality in problem-solving. Similarly, they touch upon Tony Robbins' success in convincing Zoom to expand its attendee limit during the pandemic. This example demonstrates the power of persistence, vision, and thinking outside the box in overcoming unprecedented challenges. This episode is about the struggles, triumphs, and lessons learned. It's a reminder that the journey of paying your dues is filled with hidden gems of wisdom and skills that are instrumental in achieving long-term success. We have a strange set of cultural norms around how creative people are supposed to become successful. The common tropes of the starving artist, suffering for your art, and paying your dues need to be made a thing of the past IMHO. In the folk music world that I've been a part of, I've seen people show up year after year, volunteering for menial jobs at festivals, playing free gigs and open mics, agreeing to play for "exposure", and finding a hundred other ways to chip away at their soul in exchange for opportunities that never arrive. And that is considered normal and acceptable. I believe in a different model. I stand by the idea that our creativity is meant to be a valuable service to other people, making a positive difference in the quality of their lives. And that it's worth paying for. The majority of creative people I work with have been struggling with these messages and their fallout for their entire careers. I know many musicians who have been paying dues since the 1980s and have not received any sustainable opportunities in return. Some people may argue that they're not "good enough" to merit that kind of pay. If they're good enough to ask for their talents, their talents are worth paying for. The one things I can teach creative people that will start to turn this trend around is to be much more visionary and intentional about the work they do, who it's for, and how much they require to provide it. This is the beginning of re-educating a public that has gotten used to exploiting creative talent, often for their own gain. I believe that the days of paying dues, suffering for art, and the starving artist can be over if we're willing to stop settling for a norm that doesn't serve us. Want to talk strategy? The Far Middle episode 77 celebrates two of the NHL’s greatest defensemen, number 77’s Paul Coffey and Ray Bourque. Nick reflects on how Coffey set new norms for the position and Bourque epitomized the position over a long career as an elder statesman.Coffey and Bourque paid their dues over their Hall-of-Fame careers, unfortunately, the same can’t be said of today’s mass transit riders. Nick transitions to discussing major public transportation networks not enforcing fare collection and spending taxpayer dollars without concern over their rate of return. Nick highlights fare evasion in D.C. and the impact on the transit system’s finances.Alongside broken public transportation, there’s a host of issues American cities are dealing with, but their fiscal coffers aren’t one of them as the federal stimulus spigot has been wide open since 2020. However, things are changing as state governments spend more while tax revenue begins declining and interest payments start increasing. At the same time, high earners are leaving high-tax states for lower-tax states, which will inevitably impact state and local government tax revenue. The lack of leadership in public transit and government fiscal discipline pales in comparison to the Vatican’s vacant leadership. Nick next comments on Pope Francis’ focus on matters that have nothing to do with Catholic doctrine while he ignores crises where his support could have huge differences—one example is the imprisonment of 90-year-old Catholic Cardinal Zen in China. Listen as Nick explains why Pope Francis is turning a deaf ear to Cardinal Zen’s imprisonment, and read more analysis on Pope Francis in Nick’s papal profile in Precipice.Next, Nick examines the front-page headlines of one recent day’s paper; headlines that when packaged together sum up the climate policy scheme. In closing, Nick notes that he’s a big believer in the freedom of the press and only asks for a modest level of integrity and rigor. He concludes with a few truly mean comments that were made about prior presidents, spanning FDR to Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama.

I know you, because you’re just like me: You want to find success really, really badly. But something happens once you work really hard for success and you actually achieve it.  Many of you are in this place. You’re good at what you do, you’ve served your people well, you have some clout, and you’ve found some success. Then time passes, and you forget. You forget the sweat equity that you had to put in to get to where you are today; the time it took, the tears you cried, the failures that it took to reach a new height.  And this forgetfulness makes you feel a little bit more entitled to new levels of success. You’ve done this before and feel like it should be easier this time, but it’s not necessarily. New level, new devil. New levels of work and effort and pushing for this new goal. So yes, you’ve grown and you’ve evolved, you can handle things better and you might even make less mistakes along the way, but there are new dues that still have to be paid. www.elizabethhartke.com/podcast/136 Are you looking for a community of entrepreneurs that will teach you how to scale your business AND support you on your journey? They go onto break down Dylan’s character and compare him to people they have known in the past and to date who have similar traits. Fast forward, Drew gives an example of a student he works with who didn't want to participate in a certain program just because and told him if he has too he will but if it's not mandatory he won't. The student find out later that the person making the actual presentation was pretty big time and could have really opened a lot of doors for him. Drew gives example of volunteering at his current job and how networking has paid off tremendously for his professional growth. Cape talks about being the first person to graduate out of his cohort because he had no ego and listened to his professors. The two discuss where they would be in life if they were like Dylan, only did things that were required of them and didn't ever go the extra mile. Dan McCoy has been writing and performing stand-up, sketch and improv in New York for over a decade. His webseries 9am Meeting, co-written with Matt Koff, placed 1st seven times at Channel 101 NY. The series joined the Writer's Guild of America, East as one of the very first new media signatories and was also awarded a development deal with MTV at the New York Television and Video Festival. Dan also co-hosts a fantastically funny bad movie podcast called The Flophouse. The bad movie conceit is used by the hosts to riff, make jokes and pitch fake films. He also is one of the newest writers on The Daily Show. Not too shabby a resume. A few weeks ago, Dan joined us in the Wrestling Team apartment to discuss working a terrible job in a closet, the existential state of homeless people, giving Lisa Loeb a cheese plate, how not to use the phrase "devil's advocate", being hired on The Daily Show, performing for Felicia Day, President Taft and not being the funny guy at work.
