Hør bl.a., David Bowie, Bee Gees, Pink Flag, Fleetwood … Læs videre "Genbesøg 1977"
Outside of Black Sabbath and the Ramones, it's hard to imagine a band more influential to Alternative music than Wire. Without their first three albums, 80's Post Punk & College Rock, 90's Shoegaze & Brit Pop and the indie rock of 2000's would have all sounded completely different and early 80's Hardcore maybe never exists. Their 1977 debut is simultaneously a totem of its time and entirely timeless. Pink Flag's songs span just over thirty five minutes and there's nary a wasted second with every note spawning a new genre / inspiring a new band. We dive deep. Flex your head. 1 2 X U! As punk was just beginning to take off in the UK, Wire was already looking ahead, itching to push the genre toward artsier, more abstract frontiers. Their 1977 LP Pink Flag planted the seeds for post-punk and hardcore before most kids had even had a chance to spike their first mohawk. Boasting a dizzying 21 tracks at an economical 35 minutes, Wire packed more into one album than some of their peers managed in a career. Join Dan, Phil, Mike, and Rich as they discuss how it holds up as one of the boldest debuts of the punk era. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential 90s musicians and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in the book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. On this episode, our guest is Colin Newman. Colin formed the influential band WIRE in 1976. They released the album “Pink Flag” in 1977, which would go on to influence countless post-punk and new wave bands. WIRE is famous for never looking backwards, aways creating something new and exciting with each release. Today, Colin tells us about how his relationship with his own catalog and music in general shifted during something which affected all of us, the Covid-19 pandemic. Musical credits: Theme song from Jupe Jupe. Malka Spigel and Colin Newman's radio show is Swimming in Sound. Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! You can find out more about my work and the 80s and 90s books at my website here. Hit singles: nuh. Hit albums: nuh. Unusually charismatic singer? Unforgettable visual image? Brilliant band name? Nuh. Nuh. Nuh. So why, 46 years after they formed, are we talking about Wire? Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, 154 might sound like the opening line of a really good poem; it is, though, the list of albums – released between 1977 and '79 – which, despite making only the barest dent in the charts, remain among the most influential of the era. Beloved by everyone from Johnny Marr to Elastica, from REM to Henry Rollins to Sonic Youth, Wire are still, as Rolling Stone noted in 2017, ‘Punk's ultimate cult band'. RockerMike and Rob discuss the band Wire. Wire are an English rock band, formed in London in October 1976 by Colin Newman (vocals, guitar), Graham Lewis (bass, vocals), Bruce Gilbert (guitar) and Robert Grey (drums). They were originally associated with the punk rock scene, appearing on The Roxy London WC2 album, and were later central to the development of post-punk, while their debut album Pink Flag was influential for hardcore punk. Wire are considered a definitive art punk and post-punk band, due to their richly detailed and atmospheric sound and obscure lyrical themes. They steadily developed from an early noise rock style to a more complex, structured sound involving increased use of guitar effects and synthesizers (1978's Chairs Missing and 1979's 154). The band gained a reputation for experimenting with song arrangements throughout its career. http://pinkflag.com/ https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/wire-reflect-on-40-years-as-punks-ultimate-cult-band-128633/amp/ https://www.facebook.com/WIRE.pinkflag?__cmr=1&refsrc=deprecated&_rdr https://mobile.twitter.com/wirehq https://www.billboard.com/amp/articles/columns/rock/8462176/wire-interview-reissues Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net https://8bcded2xph1jdsb8mqp8th3y0n.hop.clickbank.net/?cbpage=nb Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup #punkstyle #punk #punkrock #punkfashion #punkgirl #punkmusic #punkhair #rockmusic #rock #rockstar #rockandroll #tokyorocknroll #rocknrollchurch #rockhound --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support
Why did I pick Wire's Pink Flag for the Three on the Ones and Twos Podcast episode? For me personally this album came in multiple waves of progressing states of maturity for me to realize it's full potential - first excited by the upbeat aggro punk tracks as younger kid, then the pop and melodic sensibilities years later in high school, and then finally the dirgy lumbering heavy soundscape tracks which connected with me in my late teens. Essentially, the record follows its own path of musical development and maturity that mirrors somewhat of my own path of personal musical appreciation and expression growing up but inside a single record -a snapshot of a brief moment of some kids making noise and looking for a new way to express themselves back in 1976/77 In the aggregate, Wire, who really were never a punk band by most measures, managed to create a masterpiece punk record that defined most every genre of punk to come (from pop, hardcore, anarcho, garage, sludge, doom, art, and melodic punk) and on that same record also began defining a post-punk sound before post punk was yet a thing. And within 9 months of the release of Pink Flag they would have departed the punk scene altogether with a genre defining post punk/art rock record "Chairs Missing" -which is a masterpiece in its own right and continued the personal musical arc for me.Further, I think it is likely the most influential (yet under the radar record) for the subsequent music landscape to come in our post 70s generations. It stands as a milestone of critical connective tissue between the songs of old and songs to come influenced by the weight of its accomplishments in the pivotal musical year of 1977. It's musical DNA is in experimentation, progression and moments -never standing still or hanging around long enough from song to song or album to album to get pinned down into a genre for long -Wire is about expression and exploration. Pink Flag stands as the quintessential complete punk and experimental record of 1977 -the year in which the musical world's axis tilted further than ever before. And for many of us, that tilt in music defines more about our lives, our friends, our culture - than most anything else.I was dead sober when I wrote this.Lalala lala lalala lalala lalala ohh ohh last time now.....Brian Kincheloe

One of the things that we find quite gratifying about these double episodes is the amount of time we can spend talking about a storied band’s large back catalogue. Of course, in many ways that’s the entire raison d'etre of this whole damn enterprise, but it feels particularly good when you’ve spent a bunch of time learning about an artist and can just splurge all this knowledge out in a way that (we hope) is enlightening and educational. Our new pod friend Ferruccio is back this week and we finally dive into Pink Flag in itself. Many argue, many punk and hardcore luminaries no less, that it is the most important punk album of all time. Indeed, in many ways one could argue it’s the only proper punk album Wire have ever made (relative to the scene at the time). Either way, there is no denying how influential this album has been, but we suggest here that this album, and my extension Wire as a band, are more of a band’s band. As ever, we give the record a good once over and Ferruccio brings in some top tier post-punk knowledge to lend us an air of credibility. Of course, the real question here is: does Pink Flag deserve a place in our discography? Vote below! We hope you like Wire. Or, at the very least we hope you’re interested to hear about Wire because we have a lot to get through with this. David couldn’t join us this week, but we were able to get a post-punk expert to join us for this mammoth two parter, so say hello to Ferruccio Quercetti of the Italian punk band Cut. He is a true font of knowledge and he provides a ton of context here, which frankly is worth the price of admission alone. Anyway, Chris has been talking about nominating Pink Flag for years. Literally years. He made it known that he was thinking of pulling the trigger on this a few weeks back, which is just as well as this band have a lot of albums. That’s why this ends up as a two parter. We cover about half of their career in this episode. The crux of Chris’s argument here is that Pink Flag is one of the most important and under recognised punk albums ever written. Coming out at the height of punk in 1977, it’s clear from the outset that their approach was different from many of their contemporaries, looking to psychedelia and America instead of what was going on over on these fair shores at the time. On this episode we talk about their history, chat about the Ramones influence (and more), and cover about half of their discography. It’s a great episode, and the second part is also a doozy so come back for part two next week! Since their formation, Wire has continued to release phenomenal records and inspire artists around the world. If you like records, just starting a collection or are an uber-nerd with a house-full of vinyl, this is the podcast for you. Nate Goyer is The Vinyl Guide and discusses all things music and record-related.
Minutemen bassist Mike Watt offers a life's worth of wisdom, condensed through the keyhole into the world of punk that is Wire's 1977 debut album Pink Flag. We listened to Wire's, Pink Flag from 1977. An art school band to the core who got serious with punk and six months later they record this kind of genius. Everything mashed together, no hierarchy, constant reinvention, don't copy the Sex Pistols, create a new genre for christ sakes. Everyone else, give up. Stay glued to you TV set. In lieu of a scheduled appearance by the entire Big Dipper ensemble (next week, come hell or high water), Rob and Barry make haste not waste and deliver an episode about a monolith of underground music, Wire’s debut, “Pink Flag.” The list of luminaries (and lesser lights) who have copped to stealing wholesale from this treasure trove of ideas would fill the rest of this page. Brief songs touching on politics, sexuality and boredom are given a buff and shine by genius producer Mike Thorne, who copped to calming Wire's uptight art school nerves with a “jar of homegrown.” Whatever the method, the results stand on their own in this first of Wire’s trilogy of landmarks (Pink Flag-1977, Chairs Missing-1978, 154-1979). It’s 21 songs in 35:19 – all killer no filler. Become a patron of That Record Got Me High: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH?

On today's episode I talk to musicians Colin Newman and Malka Spigel. Married since 1986, Colin and Malka are a post-punk power couple. Colin is a member of the seminal post-punk band Wire, whose early albums Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154 were the blueprints for decades of music. And Colin continues to be a vibrant creative voice with his solo albums, and his work with his wife Malka in Githead and Immersion. Before her collaborations with Colin, Malka was a member of the influential European rock band Minimal Compact, who released numerous albums in the 1980s on Crammed Discs. Immersion's latest album Sleepless was just released, and it is wonderful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
