Episode Description In this first episode of Season 6, Some Stutter, Luh! welcomes Richard Holmes, a person who stutters and a speech-language pathologist. In this episode, Richard talks about his journey from his childhood speech therapy, to becoming a speech-language pathologist (SLP) himself. Richard reflects on how stuttering affected his self-perception, interactions, professional development, support groups, and speech therapy programs. Richard and Greg also question the word “fluency” - as known as the "f" word. Are you ready to learn more about how to “dance with a tiger”? This is Part 1 of a 2-part interview. Part 2 will air on November 5, 2024. Notes Greg and Richard explore the complexities of stuttering, including the psychological and emotional challenges that come with it. Richard shares personal experiences in therapy and his thoughts on the relationship between stuttering and self-acceptance. He stresses that most of the challenges related to stuttering are not visible or audible, but emotional and psychological. Notes: Kris explains her challenges with dyscalculia, a branch of dyslexia that affects the brain's processing of numbers and data, making math challenging. She faced difficulties at school due to dyscalculia, but she was lucky to receive help from supportive teachers, and specialized programs. Dyscalculia significantly affected Kris's self-esteem and mental health. Despite her condition, she successfully navigates her job by coping strategies like focusing on her love for plants and gardening to manage stress. Emphasizing the need for increased awareness and support for dyscalculia, Kris advocates for more resources and training for teachers and mental health professionals. She highlights the vital role of her support systems, including therapy and family, in managing her condition. Additionally, she advises others with dyscalculia to engage in activities they are passionate about to help manage their condition and maintain mental well-being. About Kris: My name is Kris and I'm honored to be a guest on this radio podcast to share my personal journey with Dyscalculia. I believe that by sharing my experiences, we can raise awareness about this learning disability and inspire others to overcome its challenges. I realized I had Dyscalculia roughly around Grade 8 when one of my best friends mentioned the condition as they were recently diagnosed. It made perfect sense; I struggled with mathematics and trying to practice the concepts were marked by frustration and self-doubt. However, I was determined not to let this learning disability define my potential. Challenges: Dyscalculia presented a range of challenges in my academic and personal life. Tasks that involved numbers, such as basic calculations and mental math seemed insurmountable at the time. I often felt isolated and struggled to keep up with my peers. Thankfully, I wasn't alone as there were a group of kids in my grade that all needed some extra help. The Turning Point: My turning point came when I met a couple supportive teachers in middle school (Ms. N. Elias and Ms. L. Cusak) who recognized my struggles and provided alternative teaching methods. With their help, I started building a foundation of numerical understanding step by step. It was a slow and often frustrating process, but I remained committed. Overcoming Dyscalculia: Through years of hard work, determination, and the support of dedicated educators and loved ones, I began to gain confidence in my mathematical abilities. I discovered strategies and tools that worked for me, such as visual aids, specialized tutoring, and assistive technology. Today, I can proudly say that I've overcome many of the challenges associated with Dyscalculia. I've not only improved my math skills but also learned to embrace my unique way of thinking. My journey has led me to become an advocate for individuals with learning disabilities and to inspire others to never give up on their dreams. Message to Others: To anyone struggling with Dyscalculia or any learning disability, I want to emphasize that you are not alone, and it's okay to seek help. With the right support and determination, you can overcome the challenges posed by Discalculia and achieve your goals. Remember, your journey is unique, and your strengths are immeasurable. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my story on this podcast, and I hope it encourages conversations about Dyscalculia and the importance of inclusive education. Today, October 22, 2020 is International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD). I'd like to take a few moments out of your time to share a recent experience that happened to me when I was asked about the significance and importance of ISAD. My name is Greg O'Grady. I am Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Stuttering Association, Host of SOME STUTTER, LUH!. I am also a professional stutterer, who specializes in covert stuttering. I introduce myself this way, as a professional stutterer, who specializes in covert stuttering to remind myself of my many yesteryears and attempts at camouflaging or hiding my stutter out of shame and humiliation. I desperately wanted to be accepted and approved, and to gain access to fluent, abled-body privileges. I am a person who stutters, and those privileges are not mine. On October 17, I attended a City of Mount Pearl Public Council meeting to accept and speak to the Newfoundland and Labrador Stuttering Association's request to have October 22 Proclaimed as ISAD in the City of Mount Pearl. City Councillors and other community individuals were in attendance. While standing beside the Mayor of the City of Mount Pearl, David Aker, listening to him proclaim ISAD in my city, I felt myself becoming overwhelmed with emotion. Once Mayor Aker finished reading our Proclamation, he handed me the microphone, and asked me to share the significance and importance of ISAD. As hard as I tried to choke down and to control my emotions erupting within me, as soon as I attempted to speak, the flood gates opened. For what seemed like and eternity, I struggled through my tears attempting to articulate the importance of ISAD. As I looked around the room, I saw in the eyes of those in attendance, looks of discomfort, surprised, and yet, looks of caring and compassion. Few people understand how stuttering can have devastating educational, emotional and psychological, social, physically, spiritual, and vocational affects on children, adolescents, adults and seniors who stutter throughout life. Based on my years of lived experience, living with a severe stutter, I feel that stuttering is TRAUMA. As I reflect now on struggling to articulate the significance and importance of ISAD, what I considered an embarrassing and humiliating experience, was in reality, my “VOICE” when I could not speak. Those tears ARE my VOICE. My TEARS communicated so clearly and echoed loudly, the TRAUMA associated with stuttering - more than any words possibly could. My TEARS gave VOICE to our global community of people who stutter; raising awareness, education, understanding and acceptance of stuttering. And so, I sincerely want to thank Mayor David Aker, the City of Mount Pearl Councillors, and others in attendance, for providing me an opportunity and a safe space to able to articulate through TEARS, the TRAUMA that stuttering can inflict on approximately 1% of the population; the 70 million people worldwide who stutter. [7:03] What do mortgage professionals need to see in the divorce decree? [11:25] How can child support or maintenance be used to qualify for a mortgage/refinance? [24:44] Can you get a co-signer to qualify for a new mortgage post-divorce? [25:57] Can you keep your interest rate when refinancing? Key Takeaways: The divorce decree trumps the credit report that shows you still owe house debt. Ensure the divorce decree states that the spouse is indemnified and held harmless, so when they purchase a new home, they can show the credit report is no longer valid. The payments must come in for at least six months to use child support or spousal maintenance to qualify for a home. There are specific ways to set up accounts for using this income at the time of the finalized divorce. There are many ways to get creative to qualify to buy a new home and do so before six months to a year. Working with a mortgage professional specializing in this space will be able to look at creative solutions such as child support, spousal support, how accounts are set up, etc. Quotes: “With a mortgage company, they look at Fanny and Freddie guidelines and take them at face value. They don't overlay some of the guidelines like some of the banks do. One of the overlays is that banks typically will not allow a purchase of a home or a mortgage transaction if someone's going through a divorce prior to the divorce being finalized.” - Brett Leschinsky “So I'll get an attorney that'll call me that'll say, Hey Brett, I thought you said, you know that if this indemnification wording is in there, they can go buy a house. And I'll say, yeah. And they say, well, their loan officer is telling them that they have to use that debt against them. And that's just one of those scenarios where the mortgage loan officers who aren't specializing in this.” - Brett Leschinsky “So take the stay-at-home parent or the parent who has a part-time job, but they're looking for full-time work, but they don't wanna wait to purchase a house. They don't want to move twice. This house that came up is perfect. A co-signer can help bridge that gap and often does help bridge that gap. We do a lot of co-signers, so it's just something that people don't think of too much. Brian Woo is a Social Service Worker student, studying part-time at Durham College. He has worked with people with developmental disabilities for 12 years, and has worked in a congregate care setting for over 7 years. He has a passion for raising awareness about Mental Health and is an advocate for the Stuttering community, the Disabled community, the Neurodivergent community, and the Chronic Illness community (which includes immunocompromised people). Brian identifies as a member of each of these communities and he increases awareness through his Twitter account @StutterLoudly and his Instagram @StutteringLoudly. Brian has volunteered at the Abilities Church, DramaWay, and was a Planning Committee Member of the "Simply People" Disability Pride Celebration and the "A Million Things I Need to Say" Walk for Stuttering Awareness. Brian's early volunteer work taught him that identifying as a Disabled or Neurodivergent person is not something to be ashamed of. We all have our own gifts & talents and we all want a world that is inclusive & accessible. Some Stutter, Luh! is working on providing transcripts of all of our episodes. Em 2017 chegou nos EUA e quando chegou aqui caiu a ficha quando começou a encarar a realidade do Imigrante nos EUA. Foi quando começou a realizar os trabalhos de limpeza, e isso a assustou muito já que era algo muito diferente do que fazia e para Luziane o trabalho de limpeza é muito difícil nos EUA, por ser pesado. Luziane chegou nos EUA com visto, ela tinha muito medo da fronteira do México e nunca iria fazer dessa forma, por ser muito religiosa ela colocou “na mão de deus” com o visto se fosse aceito ou recusado. Desde o Início da gravidez sabia que seria mãe solo. Esses foram os momentos mais difíceis da vida dela, grávida e sozinha. Até a chegada de sua irmã nos EUA quando já estava com meses. E começaram a trabalhar juntas, mas ainda era uma preocupação da Luziane de como iria criar uma filha sozinha. Long before your Luddite friend was waxing poetic about how blissful it is to not have a smartphone, Luddites were protesting the textile machinery that was slowly replacing them. It was toward the end of 1811, in the vicinity of Nottingham, England, when handicraftsmen formed organized bands and began to riot for the destruction of the new machinery. Their name is of uncertain origin, but it may be connected to a (probably mythical) person named Ned Ludd. According to an unsubstantiated account in George Pellew's Life of Lord Sidmouth (1847), Ned Ludd was a Leicestershire villager of the late 1700s who, in a fit of rage, rushed into a stocking weaver's house and destroyed his equipment; subsequently, his name was proverbially connected with machinery destruction. With the onset of the information age, Luddite gained a broader sense describing anyone who shuns new technology.

In this episode, I have the privilege of spending time with Balinese priestess, Luh Manis. Luh is a revolutionary Balinese woman, who didn't follow the traditional path of marrying young and having children straight away. Luh is a spiritual leader in her community, but it took more than 5 years for her to earn the respect of her community. The life of sacred service has been with her for over 14 years, and in this role, Luh has also sought to change the face of Balinese tourism to increase the focus on spiritual tourism. She is an extraordinary blessing in my life and I know you'll love this conversation as much as I did. Biography Luh Manis was born and raised in Bali. She is a trained “Jero” or Balinese priestess, who has responsibility in her local community to lead ceremonies. On becoming a Jero, she found her sensitivity to energy heightened, so turned to yoga and mediation to balance it. She has since gained her 200 hour yoga teacher training from Shakti Mhi at Prana Yoga College. She now practices and teaches hatha and prana yoga, and meditation, full-time. He once wrote, When one reads a poem in January, it is as lovely as when one goes for a walk in June. 1902 Birth of Harry Lutf Verne Fletcher, ("Luh-tf")(pen names John Garden and John Hereford), Engish writer. Harry wrote many books on gardening. In Purest Pleasure (1948), he wrote, Who has learned to garden who did not at the same time learn to be patient? 1917 Birth of Richard Henry Martin Robinson, gardener and professional horticultural photographer. He was regarded as one of the top gardeners of his generation. In 1955, Richard and his wife, Helen, began creating a spectacular garden at Hyde Hall set on 400 acres and nestled among the prairie wheat fields of Essex. Helen initially started gardening as a way to brighten up the place. Gardening at Hyde was hard. The landscape battles whipping winds and pitiful average yearly rainfalls. In summer, the clay soil is rock hard. In winter, whatever moisture there is, is locked in the suffocating clay. Early on, trees, pines, evergreens, and heathers were installed to provide structure and winter interest. Foxtail lilies and roses added color that the garden so desperately needed. Together, Richard and Helen transformed Hyde Hall into a garden masterpiece. In 1993, nearly forty years after the Robinsons bought Hyde Hall, the garden was gifted to the RHS. Botanic Spark 1905 Birth of Phyllis McGinley, American poet, and writer of children's books. Her poems were often light-hearted and humorous, offering a clever examination of daily life in the suburbs. In 1961, Phyllis won the Pulitzer prize. She won a Pulitzer prize in 1961 for her book, Times Three, which featured seventy poems written over three decades in the mid-1900s. A gardener, Phyllis once wrote in The Province of the Heart (1959). The trouble with gardening is that it does not remain an avocation. It becomes an obsession. And here's a little poem Phyllis wrote called Daylight Savings Time. In spring when maple buds are red, We turn the clock an hour ahead; Which means each April that arrives, We lose an hour out of our lives. Who cares? When autumn birds in flocks Fly southward, back we turn the clocks, And so regain a lovely thing That missing hour we lost in spring. Pastor John ministers in Atlanta and he also is a board member of the Crete Collective (an organization that supports and strategizes with churches led and populated by minorities). If you're in the Atlanta area, you'll want to check out Portrait Coffee, of which he is a founder. We talk about his story, an event that changed the course of his life before he went to college, the grief of losing his brother, the joys of adopting his daughter, and the work of continuing on in life. I was a kid in the candy store throughout the course of the convo.
