An aviator's journey from a former commercial airline transport pilot, flight instructor, flight examiner, and author. In the news, the SpaceX Starship first-stage booster returns to the launch pad, the NTSB reports on two B737s that were cleared for the same runway at the same time and the incident where an A350 clipped the tail of a CRJ-900. Also, navigating airline dress codes, an airport executive director resigns, and an air museum plans to expand. Guest Lola Reid Allin is the author of Highway to the Sky: An Aviator's Journey. She's a former commercial airline transport pilot, flight instructor, flight examiner, and SCUBA divemaster. Lola's work has appeared in national newspapers and publications, and in juried national and international shows. Her professional aviation affiliations include Women in Aviation International, The 99s: International Organization of Women Pilots, and the Northern Lights Aero Foundation. In her book, and with us, Lola shares personal aspects of her flying experiences and aviation career. She describes things she has learned from her student pilots, her relationships with others, the Cessna 150 she owned, and some particularly interesting flights she has piloted. Lola's story is about how learning to fly gave her wisdom and taught her to live her life. She had to defy the societal norms of the era, such as the notion that “women belong in the kitchen and the bedroom” and "they shouldn't take jobs from men who need to support their families.” An adventurer who lived with the Maya in Mexico and Belize for three years, Lola has explored more than sixty-five countries in depth. When she isn't backpacking Baffin Island, trekking the Andes or the Himalayas, forging deep into the Guatemalan jungle, summiting Kilimanjaro, or guiding a dogsled team in the Yukon, she lives with her husband of twenty-six years in a small community east of Toronto, Canada. She is a professional speaker and co-lead of the First Canadian 99s Education & Outreach Committee and for the Northern Lights Aero Foundation. Find Lola on her website, X, and Facebook. Aviation News Two planes cleared to use same runway in Nashville near-collision, NTSB says In September, Alaska Airlines Flight 369, a Boeing 737 MAX 9, was cleared for takeoff at Nashville International Airport. At the same time, Southwest Airlines Flight 2029 was cleared to cross the same runway. The Alaska Jet aborted the takeoff, which blew out the plane's tires.  The NTSB said one ground controller cleared the Southwest jet, just 23 seconds before another controller cleared the Alaska plane. Pilot of larger plane was looking away from smaller plane in Atlanta airport mishap, report says A Bombardier CRJ-900 operated by Endeavor Air, a Delta regional subsidiary, was waiting on a taxiway. A taxiing Delta Air Lines Airbus 350 clipped the tail of the CRJ with it's wingtip, knocking the tail off the smaller plane. The NTSB preliminary report finds the CRJ stopped 56 feet (17 meters) short of the hold line painted on the taxiway. As the A350's right wing extends 106 feet (32.3 meters) from the center of the jet to tip, that 56-foot distance may have been the margin between a hit and a miss. Do Airlines Really Have Dress Codes? What to Know Every airline has a contract of carriage and these typically include a cause addressing attire. These leave a lot of discretion to the airline staff and each airline is different: Southwest Airlines: Wearing clothes that are lewd, obscene, or patently offensive. American Airlines: Dress appropriately; bare feet or offensive clothing aren't allowed. Delta Air Lines: When the passenger's conduct, attire, hygiene or odor creates an unreasonable risk of offense or annoyance to other passengers. United Airlines: Passengers who are barefoot, not properly clothed, or whose clothing is lewd, obscene or offensive. Spirit Airlines: Barefoot or inadequately clothed,

An early Parkinson's diagnosis is the first step to getting Parkinson's symptoms under control and living well with Parkinson's. Getting a PD diagnosis is also one of the first obstacles many people in the Black PD community experience.   Research has shown racial disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's – finding that Black people with PD are diagnosed at a later disease stage than white people and are less likely to be diagnosed compared to other racial and ethnic groups. These differences may be due to Black patients being historically excluded from research and to a range of health disparities, which cause them to systemically experience decreased access to resources and care due to social, economic and environmental disadvantages.   Working with specialists who understand and treat Parkinson's can help you better manage your symptoms and reduce complications. Since people in the Black community are often less likely to see a PD specialist, awareness of PD in Black communities is essential.   In this episode for Black History Month, we speak with a woman who has been very involved in raising awareness of PD among the Black community. Since her diagnosis, Denise Coley has become engaged in PD organizations. She served on the Parkinson's Foundation's People with Parkinson's Advisory Council, and she is currently the Chair of the Mission and Outreach Committee of the California Parkinson's Foundation Advisory Council.

Scooter Sayers and Joe Lynch discuss horseshoes and LTL. Scooter is the President at Sayers Logistics, a boutique LTL-based transportation consultancy that helps 3PLs, shippers, and technology providers to develop best practices, reduce costs, optimize solutions, seize opportunities, and penetrate new markets. About Scooter Sayers Scooter Sayers graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and a Master of Business Administration.  He and his wife currently reside in the Atlanta metro area. He began his career in transportation with ABF Freight in 1991 as a Pricing Analyst, progressing through several positions including Director – Rating & Traffic Services.  In this latter role, he held responsibility for 100 employees in the corporate office as well as the Weighing & Research team spread across the ABF Freight network.  He developed the LTL industry's first density-based tariff in 1993. Scooter is a former member of the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) where he served as Chairman of the Weighing and Research Committee and Chairman of the Outreach Committee.  He also served as a member of NMFTA's Weighing & Research Association.  He is a two-time winner of ABF Freight's President's Club.  He is a member of the Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineers. Following a 25-plus year career at ABF Freight and ArcBest Corporation, Scooter spent 3 years in the 3PL and freight brokerage space with several companies.  He is currently President at Sayers Logistics LLC, an LTL transportation consultancy, where he delivers LTL solutions.  He can be reached at scooter@sayerslogistics.com or 479-461-1672 About Sayers Logistics Sayers Logistics LLC, founded in 2020 by LTL industry veteran Scooter Sayers, is a boutique LTL-based transportation consultancy that helps 3PLs, shippers, and technology providers to develop best practices, reduce costs, optimize solutions, seize opportunities, and penetrate new markets. Key Takeaways: Horseshoes and LTL Scooter Sayers is the CEO and Founder of Sayer Logistics, a boutique LTL-based transportation consultancy that helps 3PLs, shippers, and technology providers to develop best practices, reduce costs, optimize solutions, seize opportunities, and penetrate new markets. In the podcast interview, Joe and Scooter discussed horseshoes and LTL, which refers to an article that Scooter wrote about the changes to the LTL industry. Check out Scooter's LinkedIn Post here: Horseshoes and LTL Scooter's “horseshoe” reference is regarding LTL pricing, which is notoriously complex and difficult to understand. Scooter believes that LTL pricing is going to become easier – more like the game horseshoes, where “close enough” is good enough. Shippers, carriers, and 3PLs have all struggled with the current pricing, which is based on product classifications which are often interpreted incorrectly. The new pricing system will be based on density, in other words if you give the carrier the proper weights and dimensions, you will get a quote that matches the invoice. The pricing change is being driven by LTL industry leaders Old Dominion, FedEx along with The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA). The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) is a nonprofit membership organization headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. Its membership is comprised of motor carriers operating in interstate, intrastate and foreign commerce. NMFTA publishes the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC®), a standard that provides a comparison of commodities moving in commerce. Sayers Logistics was founded in 2020 by LTL industry veteran Scooter Sayers.  With over 25 years in the industry, covering both the asset-based and non-asset side, Scooter's expertise has a heavy focus on pricing, yield management, carrier relations, sales support, and costing.  He is also well versed within administration, technology, customer service, and operations. Scooter and the Sayer's team are passionate about the industry and understands the many challenges faced by LTL carriers, shippers, and logistics providers.  Learn More About Horseshoes and LTL Scooter on LinkedIn Sayers Logistics on LinkedIn Sayers Logistics Horseshoes and LTL The Logistics of Logistics Podcast If you enjoy the podcast, please leave a positive review, subscribe, and share it with your friends and colleagues. Quotes: 08:25 “I thought it was going to be “BIG” early on. I mean, before Apple even supported it, I quit my day job and went podcasting full time. So that was April 2005, I left a six-figure income to do podcasting. Early on, I  thought this had potential to be really big.” 09:11 “Where podcasting comes into play, and the strength is it's a distraction medium. It's something you can listen to while you're doing something else – while you're walking the dog, working out, doing yard work, driving to work, to and from, at work. It's something that you can have going as a distraction, as getting your mind off of the task at hand that's chewing up all your time. This just helps pass the day, and audio has always had that capability.” 17:44 “…when I got to that point where I wasn't worried about the recording anymore, I found it easier to concentrate more on the content of what was going on in the interview, and that helped me really find my voice.” 34:29 “I mean that's what we try to do. We try to help you get out everywhere because you never know where your show is going to take off.” 52:05 “I think everyone should podcast. Everyone has a voice. I think the biggest impediment to getting people into podcasting is always that they don't like the way their voice sounds. I just say, “Well, remember this, Gilbert Gottfried has a podcast, and if he can have a podcast, anybody can have a podcast.” Timestamps: 00:50     Introducing Rob Walch 02:44     The Genesis of Podcasting, and how Rob started in this space 06:52     Who are the influences at the beginning of podcasting? 08:10     When did Rob realize that podcasting will be big? 10:09     Did Rob have a monetization plan when he began in podcasting? 12:03     There is a lot of room for podcasters and it is a very medium niche compared to other platforms 14:37     What would Rob say to a new person who wants to get on board and start their podcast? 16:32     How long did it take for Rob to find his voice? 18:21     In a lot of interviews that he has done, is there any favorite or a really extraordinary one? 21:14     Rob talks about his take on Netflix entering into podcasting. 23:18     Monetization in podcasting – how it works, why people should know it, and what to take action on.  26:44     As a consultant, what is his take on companies stacking out on business without any profits? 33:36     The other platforms that are available in podcasting. 37:15     Who started Libsyn and how did he get affiliated with it? 39:45     How many podcasts is he currently and actively doing? 41:28     The high points of data privacy, and what it looks like without it. 47:15     What is Rob's feeling on the future of podcasting. 50:35     How was Rob's move to Tennessee? 53:08     Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor   Spotify Playlist: Did you miss the alumni artists on the dHarmic Evolution? Top Takeaways We are all communicators whether it’s in your title or not. Communicate early and often whether it’s good news or bad news. We are feeling machines that think – driven by our experiences and emotions. Shownotes: 4:54 Tell us about the WEFTEC2019 Communications Camp and what the biggest highlights were for you. Span the range of communications from crisis to social media. Discussed research, storytelling and branding. We are Humans first. We are all communicators. 8:38 What stood out from the case studies presented at the Comms Camp? Ability to work through children to enhance communication and get your message out. Opportunity to educate the community on the importance of pollution and stormwater. 12:11 What were some ah-ha moments from the camp? Validation in the importance of communicating early and often, whether it’s good news or bad news. Our role is to inform the community. You don’t have to have every piece of information before you speak to the community. It’s okay to offer what you have and let them know you will update when more information is available. 14:05 What does the lizard brain do when we share bad news? The brain is accessing experiences and emotions. The brain burns 20% of the energy your body uses. 90% of that is subconscious. We are feeling machines that think.  Marketing is about providing value and solving problems. Your product solves your audience’s problem and not the other way around. Getting through to the lizard brain is key and takes strategy. 23:05 An example from the Comms Camp: contrasting. Need to show the before and after. The with and without versions. One strong message – limit the claims and benefits to three. Speak with visuals to bring people in. 27:53 The Lightning Round. Infinite Possibilities – Mike Dooley. Take a deep breath and stop. Brianna remains connected to the tribe via WhatsApp. [17:05] What were some of your biggest takeaways from Tanzania? The USA is so much more engineered than Tanzania.  Very few standards – looked like a lot of chaos. No infrastructure to support basic needs. Hard to describe the level of poverty these people experience every day. Vibrant culture, kind people, what they have they are willing to share. The people are very happy. [22:48] You said Tanzania doesn’t have concern for environmental issues, what made you come to that conclusion? There were piles of trash in the front yards of most people’s homes. More concerned about getting food and water vs. environmental concerns. Sometimes we think we are doing a good thing but the results don’t turn out as expected – the story of two wells. TGNP is bringing women into the water industry and using local resources to perform work. [29:15] What are some of the things you noticed about women and the impact of the global water crisis? Cannot meet SDG6 without the help of women. Women still bear the primary responsibility for collecting water. Their lack of education prevents than from participating in the water industry unless they are shown how. Five words that sum up her takeaways from the trip. Existence – Until you see it yourself, it’s not real to you. Raw – This is my story and I was a witness to their stories. Guilty – This could be my life too. Calamity – Our absence of solutions has occurred over many years. Inspiring – The people’s passion for life in spite of these circumstances. What I am doing has a purpose. [35:00] What was it like to come back to the US? Consider bathing your newborn child in this polluted water.  We can trust our water systems without these fears. I wanted to stay. I fell in love with the Tanzanian people. I enjoyed living in their culture. Water is life really hits you when you see these issues up close. [38:45] Do you feel like you’ve been able to raise the awareness you hoped? People were shocked and disgusted that this still exists. As a global humanity we need to do

(https://www.theh2duo.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Water-in-Real-Life-Kathy-Nguyen.png) Kathy Nguyen graduated from Berry College with a BA in Speech/Communications.  She studied Environmental Management at the University of Maryland. She has been with Cobb County Water System since 2001.  In 2004 she became the Water Efficiency Manager, where she developed, implemented and manages the Water Efficiency Program. In 2009 she became the Senior Project Manager for Water Resources.  She is currently the Customer Service Division Manager. She is a member of: American Water Works Association, Georgia Association of Water Professionals, Technical Coordinating Committee for Metro North Georgia Water Planning District, Department of Community Affairs WaterFirst Adjudication Team, Technical Advisory Committee for both the State-wide Water Plan and the State-wide Water Conservation Plan, Past-Chair of the Alliance for Water Efficiency Public Education and Outreach Committee, the Georgia Water Wise Council the Georgia Section of American Water Works, The Irrigation Association SWAT Promotional Working Group. Top Takeaways: Kathy spoke about how she dramatically shifted the public buy-in of her water conservation program by shifting her mindset and approaching conservation through the prism of her customers. In this episode, we chat about that very shift and why we think it’s an important message for young professionals to hear, as well as anyone that wears their passion for what they do on their sleeve. Everyone should have a mentor that scares the crap out of them. How the adage “the way we’ve always done it” kills the culture of creativity and innovation in our organizations that retain the next gen. If you manage customer service staff, it’s your job to make sure every other manager understands the value your employees bring to the entire organization. Show Notes: [5:25] Alliance for Water Efficiency: Water efficiency takes a back seat in almost every other water association. It filled a void and coalesced all the experts from the other organizations. [7:38] Cobb County Efficiency Program: Kathy gives an overview of their very diverse conservation program. [10:25] Shift in Mindset After the lifting of a two-year drought restriction, the public didn’t continue to save water, instead they called for Kathy to be fired. Kathy got creative and shifted her messaging from conservation ethics to tying the water resource to being a fiscal resource, an economic development tool. [13:48] “I don’t understand why the entire water system can not run like the water efficiency program.” That was a big endorsement from one of the biggest critics. Their message had resonated with the right group. [15:07] “I would like in water if the word stakeholder was less scary than nuclear holocaust. When I say I’m going to have a stakeholder task force I may as well have said I just pushed the button.” [15:41] “You have to find and know your customer base. It has to be more than a slogan. It has to be more than the label of your program. Every single thing you do has to tie back to that idea.” [16:28] The Atlanta Braves moved to Cobb County. They massaged their water use/cost like a “water bank”, a water balance. “If we save this, we can do this.” [18:20] When you eliminate divisiveness between groups by letting go the personal feelings. “You can preach to the choir, but you may be alone.” [19:48] “We all have the person who comes to every single workshop you do. They’ve implemented everything you’ve told them to do. They’re flushing the toilet with a bucket. But they’re not your problem.” [23:07] Value of Mentors [26:52] “Everybody has a mentor that lets them do something scares the crap out of them. There’s no other way for them to be ready. Then just stand back like one of those trust falls.” [27:59] Young Professionals The adage so prevalent in the water...

From BCB...http://bestofbcb.org/wu-085-new-treatments-for-eye-disease-november-1/ Some groundbreaking advances in vision research are offering new hope for the visually impaired, according to an upcoming talk to be given at the Senior Center by Dr. Russell Van Gelder.  Van Gelder serves as Director of the University of Washington Eye Institute and Chair of the UW Opthalmology Department.   In his talk, entitled The Promise of Vision Restoration, Dr. Van Gelder will describe how blinding eye diseases like macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are not an inevitable part of aging.  Now that we understand that these causes of blindness are not age-related but actually diseases, the UW Eye institute, in collaboration with other universities, is exploring how technologies like stem cell therapy, gene therapy, and drug therapy might be used to restore vision. In this podcast BCB host Joanna Pyle talks with Katherine Hayner, a member of the Bainbridge Island Visually Impaired Persons (VIP) Support Group. Diagnosed 15 years ago with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), Hayner gradually became involved with the Library's VIP support program and began exploring available resources for the group.  After attending a talk given by Dr. Van Gelder at the library in 2012, Hayner became intrigued by the work of the Eye Institute, and now serves on the Outreach Committee of the Community Action Board of the Institute. Hayner believes that the work of the institute will help to ensure that the next generation will not suffer the blinding effects of retinal diseases. Please join us Saturday, November 1, from 10:30 to noon at the Waterfront Park Community Center to hear Dr. Gelder speak on "The Promise of Vision Restoration."  Credits: BCB host and studio tech: Joanna Pyle; BCB audio editor and music intro: Tim Bird; BCB ferry music: Dogfish Bay Studios; Podcast art: artopia creative.
