This week I welcome two incredible women from my personal circle, Hilary DiPiero and Teresa Pearson. Long term friends turned collaborators, who have come together in the creation of a brand that is focused on sharing the beauty and power of the small moments in life.  Personally, I am struck by their connection to each other and their decision to reveal themselves so that it can bring happiness and inspiration to other people.  An inspiring, feel good conversation that is just in time for the season of giving! Hilary DiPiero is married with 3 children in New Jersey.  She has served on HMH@ Riverview Medical Center Board of trustees and served on Horizons Board.  She also hosts an annual fundraiser for HMH@Riverview Medical Center the last 10 years.  Teresa Pearson relocated back to the NJ area in 2020 after living in the New England area for 18+ years. She is mother to Bridget and happily married to her husband, Dana.  She has been a Marketing Executive w/ over 25+ years of experience working for Fortune 500 companies and served on several boards - Girls on the Run Board, St Judes Family Advisory Board as well as HMH Marketing Sub-Committee Board.(4:00) We start off talking about the beautiful friendship that Hilary and Teresa share.  How did they meet?  What was the genesis of this collaboration that they have created?  (9:27) They talk about how this collaboration isn't just about themselves, but also shedding light on the “small moments” we can appreciate each day.  (12:33) They each describe the other, sharing with the community what they see in each other.  (16:37) We talk about courage, in bringing themselves forward into the public, and what part it has played in their journey.(25:26) What has changed in their lives as a result of their collaboration and putting themselves out there?  (28:18) What is the reaction to the work they do?  What are they hearing from people who follow them and share their own experiences?  (32:15) What advice do they share with others who are inspired to try something new in their own lives?  (40:02) What is next for Hilary and Teresa?Connect with Hilary DiPiero and Teresa Pearson https://www.instagram.com/hilaryandteresa/Subscribe: Warriors At Work PodcastsWebsite: https://jeaniecoomber.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/986666321719033/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeanie_coomber/Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeanie_coomberLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeanie-coomber-90973b4/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbMZ2HyNNyPoeCSqKClBC_w

Contingent Encounters: Improvisation in Music and Everyday Life (U Michigan Press, 2022) offers a sustained comparative study of improvisation as it appears between music and everyday life. Drawing on work in musicology, cultural studies, and critical improvisation studies, as well as his own performing experience, Dan DiPiero argues that comparing improvisation across domains calls into question how improvisation is typically recognized. By comparing the music of Eric Dolphy, Norwegian free improvisers, Mr. K, and the Ingrid Laubrock/Kris Davis duo with improvised activities in everyday life (such as walking, baking, working, and listening), DiPiero concludes that improvisation appears as a function of any encounter between subjects, objects, and environments. Bringing contingency into conversation with the utopian strain of critical improvisation studies, DiPiero shows how particular social investments cause improvisation to be associated with relative freedom, risk-taking, and unpredictability in both scholarship and public discourse. Taking seriously the claim that improvisation is the same thing as living, Contingent Encounters overturns long-standing assumptions about the aesthetic and political implications of this notoriously slippery term. Dan DiPiero is a musician and Visiting Assistant Professor of Musicology at Ithaca College, soon-to-be Assistant Professor of Music Studies, UMKC Conservatory. 151 - Megan DiPiero is a force of nature. After building her Florida-based photography business into a $500k/year success, Megan shifted gears to start helping other photographers achieve similar results. Now, inside her coaching sphere, photographers regularly earn $10,000—or more—from a single session. Instead of asking How can I get more clients?, according to Megan, you should be asking How can I get better sales? In this episode, you'll hear why she encourages photographers to provide a luxury service, and what that really means.     What To Listen For:The two viable market segments, and the one that's dying outWhat it actually looks like to provide a luxury serviceWhy your clients secretly prefer paying higher prices (!)The huge advantage introverts have in networkingHow to build your biz with gift credits—and the key phrase that makes it workFor more of Megan's energy and expertise (trust me, you're going to want it!), I highly recommend downloading the audiobook version of She Sells: The Empathy Advantage—Megan's free gift for Hair of the Dog listeners like you.

One of the hardest things for a professional photographer to do is raise their prices. But why is that? We get so caught up in charging according to our self-worth instead of charging for the value our clients see in the photography experience. Once you make that mindset shift, selling and scaling becomes so much easier. In this episode, I chat with coach, speaker, and author Megan DiPeiro about selling with confidence and raising your prices. Megan shares the mindset shifts that have to happen before you can sell your work as a luxury service. She explains why luxe photography is about the experience, not just the final product. And we discuss advice for new photographers and those who want to scale their businesses past six figures. What's in this episode:Why Megan loves sales, and how other photographers can learn to love it, too [2:19]What mindset shift has to happen before you can raise your prices and increase your profit [5:51]How to determine if you're a good fit for your clients and make a deep connection from the get-go [10:45]How to show clients that your work creates a meaningful experience, not just photos [16:54]Why you shouldn't “charge your worth” but instead “charge for your value” [20:40]How to make the mindset shift towards seeing and marketing your work as a luxe service [23:58]Why you should present your price, “shut your mouth,” and allow your clients to react to the number [33:14]Megan's advice for new photographers and those who want to scale their businesses [33:55]If you want to shift your mindset, raise your prices, and scale your business, tune in to this episode. For full show notes, resources, links and to download the transcript, visit our website: https://themilkyway.ca/cultivating-an-empathy-selling-mindset-with-megan-dipiero/Reserve your spot for the 2022 Online Family Photography Retreat: https://themilkyway.ca/2022-family-retreat/

E65: I The People: Conservative Populist Rhetorics (w/ Dr. Paul Elliott Johnson)

Although “populism” is a term that has been rigorously discussed and theorized in political science and communication studies, the term has received special attention ever since the political rise and presidency of Donald Trump. But what does populism actually mean, and how can we trace the lineage of populist conservative discourses that prefigured the Trump presidency? To guide us through the rhetorical history of this fraught concept, we are joined on the show today by Dr. Paul Elliott Johnson, Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh. His recently published book, I the People: The Rhetoric of Conservative Populism in the United States, tells a captivating story of how conservative politicians and rhetors from the mid-20th-century to the present have appealed to the values of “the people.” Johnson elucidates how the conservative variant of populism has reduced the category of “the American people” through its focus on a possessive individualism constantly under threat by new ways of being and modes of organization. This sense of “the people under siege” has been undergirded by a reactionary response to blackness, which is ultimately traceable to the US's foundation in settler-colonialism and chattel slavery. In our discussion, we talk through several of the rhetorical case studies in Johnson's book, including the political ascendency and presidency of Ronald Reagan, the 1994 midterm elections and the year of the “angry white male,” the astroturfed revanchist “Tea Party” surge during the Obama presidency, and the rise of Donald Trump and the contemporary right-wing. Finally, we discuss some alternative methods of articulating “the people” that might help to expand, rather than reduce, the meaning of US popular democracy.References:Beasley, V. B. (2011). For the season finale, Crown Prince William must decide if Tim's all-time favorite film can unseat La Dolce Vita from the top of the podium. They are joined in conversation by Jessica Sweeney of the Collegium Institute in Philadelphia and John O'Brien of the Aquinas Forum in Denver. The aim: Explore themes universal and particular in Terrence Malick's 2011 film, which won the coveted Palme d'Or at Cannes and which Wikipedia dubs "an American epic experimental drama film." What more could we add? Journey with us to the childhood streets of Waco, TX and all the way to the Big Bang itself. As Malick's screenplay says, using images gives a sense of scope: "A child; the similarity in form between the shape of his ear and that of an oyster shell, between the cowlick at the crown of his head and a galaxy."
