EPISODE 4: BEING ALONE & TALKING TO PEOPLE. Rebecca Kelly & Misbah Wolf. Today EWF are stoked to share a conversation between poets Rebecca Kelly and Misbah Wolf. Rebecca Kelly is a poet from the waters of Darkinjung Country, currently situated on Wurundjeri Country. Presently, her work is fuelled by questions of class, being, identity and psyche. Misbah Wolf is a Naarm based poet, who is a hybrid artist, combining music, poetry, performance and art. Their current obsession is exploring the intersections of monotheism and alternative spiritualities through cut-ups, music, research and channelling and are currently writing what they have called an ‘auto-mythological' fiction funded by Creative Victoria. They have published work through Peril Magazine, Australian Poetry Journal, Cordite, Slow Canoe, Solid Air: Australian and New Zealand Spoken Word, Mascara Literary Journal, Overland, Red Room Poetry and La Mama Poetica.. Their first book was Rooftops in Karachi. Her new book ‘Carapace' was published by Vagabond Press in 2022. Misbah and Rebecca met for the first time for this conversation. They spoke about the spiritual, musical and thematic influences within their poetry, and the idiosyncratic patterns and processes of their practices. This is a tender-hearted, down-to-earth conversation. We hope you enjoy. “The idea that the arts need to be something separate from your socially engaged life, or your community-based life, its really been created by institutions and it isn’t true. Every community… has been using the arts and creativity to thrive, since forever.” Rebecca Kelly-Golfman is a facilitator, entrepreneur, theatre artist, and activist. She has spent her entire career figuring out how to integrate the arts and advocacy/activism work, and helping others to learn how to do this too. Rebecca is a true Renaissance Soul/Multi-potentialite, cobbling together a variety of different activities to build a life and career that really feeds her soul. Amongst her various activities, Rebecca is the Founder of Black Abundance BK, a platform celebrating Black life in Brooklyn through uplifting Black businesses, creators, activists, and community members. As an Adjunct Professor at Wagner College, she was awarded The Diversity and International Action Council Award for Diversity and Inclusion for her course Race, the Arts, and Activism.  She also devises plays with anti-gun violence youth organizers in Crown Heights through Theatre of the Oppressed NYC. Additionally, Rebecca is a former civil rights attorney where she focused on dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline as Associate Counsel with The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in Washington DC. She was recently selected as part of the 2018 Create Change Fellow cohort with The Laundromat Project, and is co-creating a socially engaged art project in Brooklyn with STooPS Bed-Stuy.   You can learn more about Rebecca’s work at rebeccakellyg.com and blackabundancebk.com and follow her on Instagram at @rebeccakelly_g and @blackabundancebk.   Some themes from our conversation: * Learning to accept various artist identities outside of a formalized/externally recognized space * Getting self judgement out of the way * The natural synergy of arts and activism * A (very) brief history of the arts being used as a form of rebellion/resistance by African people enslaved in the US

I have known Rebecca since 2013 and she is a whirlwind of creativity. She balances being a mother with a demanding job in a fine art publishing company alongside running a baking business and taking fine art commissions on the side. Her days are filled with creative thoughts and she explores them fully. It wasn't always the case though and we often talked about the struggles of finding time to be creative when there are other demands on us that needed to be met first. Our many conversations led me to want to start this blog and I'm excited to find out how making more time for creativity has impacted on her day to day life too.

AARP released a new study of caregivers in Tennessee. Joining the show recently was AARP's director for the state of Tennessee, Rebecca Kelly.  Standing With Hope's Prosthetic Limb OutreachAnnette Last week we received this picture of Annette (12 months old) walking on her new prosthetic limb. Joseph Thompson made this for her using supplies and materials that Standing With Hope provides. Annette developed an infection in her leg, but due to a strike by physicians in her area in Ghana, she was untreated and the infection spread to the point where her limb had to be amputated. We can't change what happened to Annette, but we can help what happens next. She will need a new limb every six months or so for some time. You can help Annette and so many more by sponsoring a leg through Standing With Hope's prosthetic limb outreach.
